Buffiverse TV-Movie For
BBC?? RIPPER in 2008??
I am – Hercules!!
“Ripper,” a Rupert Giles-centric BBC project Joss Whedon has been talking about since the fifth season of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” may yet manifest.
Speaking at a Dark Horse Comic Con event in San Diego Saturday, Whedon says he now hopes to launch “Ripper” as a 90-minute BBC movie in 2008.
In the current Whedon-masterminded "Buffy: Season Eight" comic-book series, Giles is busy training a platoon of vampire slayers. Hopefully the new project will acknowledge this?

I will catch that!

If you release a movie or TV show called Ripper in Engerland, they are going to think it's Jack the Ripper. Is it such or is it something else? Buffy-esque?
-
how come she's not in any movies or tv shows?
-
Duh. Giles centric. Sorry. Nothing to see here. Move along. Wait, not yet. Still, might want to change the name. Okay, now you can move along. Thank you.
-
Here's betting this one gets to 50.
-
on her lower back just above her booty-crack during her Playboy spread. I luv wild girls.
-
just kidding, there is no but. i honestly have no objections. Tony Head is the shit.
-
have Willow pop up and let nudity ensue (how the hell is that spelled anyway)
-
Giles' nickname from when he raised hell as a teenager. So, it might show a bit of his origin. Or maybe not. I hope Ethan shows up somehow, although he's not around in the comic anymore.
-
i must have missed that issue. next Buffy alum to do Playboy: Winifred "Fred" Burkle!
-
poor Tara.
-
Of course they will probably blow it with shitty FX and film it on video........
-
yes....she would look fine naked
-
the last ep of season 4 with willow in the back of Xander's icecream truck...She was quite yummyliscious.
-
I miss him.
-
as was shown in the first few episodes of season 7.
-
The BBC is youth obsessed and had a huge hit with Life on Mars. I bet this'll be young Giles and Ethan in the seventies. Wonder if Anthony Head'll be in it all.
-
he probably will, but most likely in a limited capacity. i sense it's one of those flashback type of deals here, with Giles only appearing in the present for about 10 min. in total while recanting the tale.
-
Don't! If this turns out not to be true, then I'll cut you! I mean it, with like a whole butter knife just as soon as I finish putting jam on my toast.
-
I have no doubt Whedon would like to make it, but I have trouble envisioning the BBC backing it.
-
It will probably be filmed in Britain so BBC is logical entity to be involved. Fox will have to pony up some moneeees.
-
There were a lot of interesting nuggets about Giles past in the 2nd season of BTVS especially
-
Dang I miss Buffy. My wife and I just finished re-watching Season 7. They should consider a big screen version.

Torchwood & Doctor Who's success makes this possible
by HarryBlackPotter
The BBC would be a good partner for a Ripper show. Hope this happens.
-
If the BBC has a hand in it. Plus, us Brits will have to pay for it out of our pockets. Think Dr Who CRAP with Tony Head for 5 mins. I bet Ricky Gervaise or Catherine Tate will be in it too. Or maybe Peter Kaye.
-
OK I drool over Buffy, Cordelia, and Willow. They take 3 of the spots on my celebrity allowed to do list. Now lets get a legit big screen movie with all the trimmings, cause I love the series, and have loved the new comics by Joss so far.
-
I'd really come to terms with the belief that I'd never see any new Buffiverse program with any of the characters I know and love. It hurts too much to put faith in a dying cause. Joss is probably the least busy he's ever been, so that would give this a bit more hope. But for this to be Giles with an all-new cast could potentially be disappointing. I would lobby for an appearance from at least one of the following: Ethan Rayne, ghost of Jenny Calendar, ghost of Joyce Summers, Willow, maybe one of the old potentials like the girl from Freaks and Geeks (she was probably the only likable one), the ghost of Quentin Travers, Wesley Wyndham-Price, Wesley's dad, I guess he was a bit more connected to Tara than other Scoobies... Others too I'm sure. But the one you're most likely to get would be Andrew as indicated by the final Angel season. Which would be fine. I'll even take none; I'm a beggar. Any Buffiverse that involves visual motion and sound, I'd kill for.
-
Someone suggested this could be about the young Ripper. God help us... Still, I'm sure I'd watch it, to have SOMETHING... The BBC, though, seemed extremely fond of Buffy/Angel, more so than WB or UPN. I'd wager it's just a matter of the funding, yeah.
-
Still great shows (Buffy and Angel) and I truly hope this will be true. I won't mind to see more from Whedon (yeah, he does the comics, but I want more and more of this guy on TV and in movies)
-
Everything Sci-Fi orientated that the BBC makes looks tacky, cheap and looks like it had a budget of less than £100. I know there's a huge market for kitsch like Doctor Who, Blake's 7 and Torchwood, but let Whedon make it using a U.S studio and crew just compare Angel, Buffy and Firefly's production to any of that of the BBC's and the difference is there for all to see. I was told that production budget for one episode of Battlestar Galactica is equal to that of one of Doctor Who's - now tell me which one looks like they spent the money well! Don't let the BBC fuck this up - we've waited too long in Buffyverse for this for them to ruin it for everyone.
-
Ripper was what Giles went as when he was a young punk when him and Raine wreaked havok in London. Jossy had mentioned this as a potential spin-off series when BTVS ended, refering he would have to cast a younger Rupert.
-
Whilst we're here lobbying for our favourite Buffy gals - FAITH !! Just think if we'd the planets had aligned properly we'd of been mid way through series three of Faith The Vampire Slayer, Angel series 7 and seen both Fred and Faith gracing the pages of Playboy - quick some one phone Heff and Joss, it's never too late. :)
-
i must disagree. dr who's production values are excellent -- different from the US, maybe not that professional-looking at places, but still excellent. if who operates with the same amount of money per episode... well, just think that a lot of who eps have outdoor shots (a lot of them), which usually cost much more, almost the only constant scenery is the inside of the tardis, everything else... they need new sets. whereas in bsg, they can keep reusing the same sets (and they do). so, really, don't compare apples and oranges.

and as proof that a, bbc can make kickass series, and b, using hdv instead of film is just as good, take a look at the recently (read: yesterday) completed miniseries, jekyll. shot on hdv, made by bbc, and kicks some serious ass both visually and storywise. so, don't be afraid... if there is a ripper series done by the bbc, it's gonna kick ass.
-
Oh well no use crying over spilt villians.
-
Jekyll is a show with an adult audience and post-watershed content. I think its likely any buffy franchise will get very different young-teen treatment. I would go so far as to guess it'll get Dr.W's slot during the season break. But as long as they stay the hell away from CG monsters (which always look shocking in Who and worse in other UK dramas (Primevil for example *shudder*)) they should be able to keep most of the feel of the original shows, even if it's with less menace and more cheesey comedy.

Anthony Head will definitely be in it, BBC love him
by performingmonkey
This series has been on the cards since Giles left Buffy. I hope it gets made now.
-
I cant believe nobody mentioned her.She's old enough(yes I checked before posting)Such a tight little body :)
-
...I could not find one good glossy of her. When I met her for the signing ...she is beautiful. (Now shivering). Tony Head will always be the instant coffee guy to me. Young Giles - raising hell while having an instant. (Now shuddering).
-
"I was told that production budget for one episode of 'Battlestar Galactica' is equal to that of one of Doctor Who's - now tell me which one looks like they spent the money well" I've never seen any pegboard in any episode of Doctor Who. ;)
-
was in the episode "Restless", the strange one about all the Scoobies's dream that looked like a David Lynch scene. Primeval was the episode just before that were they summoned the first Slayer to give Buffy more power to fight Adam.....boy am I a Buffy nerd. Any how, the hottest girl of Buffy was Anya......and Jenny Calendar.

so it would be unfair for them to avoid incorporating the current plot into this feature.
-
Cake or death? Um... cake please.
-
I hope Ethan Rayne is in this. One of my favorite characters from the show.
-
Show some respect! It's called a Tramp Stamp.

reported the death of East enders Icon Mike Reid. For 12 years Reid brought the real life east end to a very fictional world. Uk visitors to this site will remember him for Runaround. The hugely popular kids tv show in which Reid would ask questions and then shout "RUNAROUND" at the top of his east end accent. He started his carrer as a comic in working men clubs and he got his big break on the outdated show the comedians on ITV which raked in something like 22millions viewers. Though the material would be classified as ractist and offensive today . it was the dreariness of the eastenders scripts that forced him to leave the first time. In the rules on eastenders you forbidden to publicise anything. Reid didnt know this and when he went off the publicise autobiography. his Eastenders bosses read him the riot act and as punishment he was suspended from the show. This site will remember him from Snatch. and he was making another film at the time of his death. The trailer was due to be released. When John yorke assumed command of eastenders three years. He dropped a lot of characters from the show and the buthcher family was one victim. One of eastenders finest moments and Frank affairs between Peggy and Pat. Pat gets a knock on the door and its frank wearing nothing but twirling bowtie. 'appy birthday dahling. classic. He brought a lot of charm to the street and he had great oneliners. He was the only kids tv presenter who looked he came from a car lot. His death was sudden. His doctors gave him the all clear. He was rushed to hopsital with stomach pains and he died of massive heart attack. He will be missed. He was roger Moore stuntman on the saint. He was a legend and he will be missed. He was 67. Rip mike reid.

I enjoyed a lot of season seven, and found the finale a pretty good ending. Season 8 has been a lot of fun, but the idea that it's offical gives it a lot of weight... That being said, Whedon and company have written themselves in a corner for any future TV and film projects with the Buffyverse. There's just too much backstory; and the concept of there being an Army of Slayers makes Buffy a little mundane. If there is ever going to be a film version, it will have to be yet another revamp not attached to the series, with a new cast. Which is a shame.
-
I thought I heard she was taking a break from acting to raise her kids. Did you ever notice how many Buffyverse actors show up on "how I met your mother" on cbs? I know Willow is one of the stars (she looks hot now!), so maybe she gets them gigs. So far I have seen Wesley, Fred, and Andrew have major guest roles on there.
-
Whedon's always promising things he doesn't deliver. And isn't ASH getting a little creaky for this sort of thing? I mean, he was fine as the alien headmaster on Doctor Who, but I think his Giles alter-ego would have been better served if they'd done the show six years ago as it was originally promised. At most, it will be a curiosity.
-
it'd be great if they could also get the previous Buffy alumni who have already guest starred on that show in the same episode. like the Alyson character goes to a high school/college reunion and meets them all there.
-
Little britain's prime minister. I dont like LB, but he was funny with Walliams Sebastian. there was a documentary on the BBC called LB down under. The reaction ASH got when he set foot on the stage of the Sydney opera house as the Prime was amazing.
-
There was some rumours about this after she failed to appear for the end of series cast wrap party. Her career really hasnt gone anywhere since. I think she has what they call an acting curse. She has played a role which everyone loves. and she cant shake it off.
-
with a younger crowd. (Young Giles, Young Ethan)Who would we like to get? My choice. For Giles: Ciaran McMenamin from Jericho and True Dare Kiss. For Ethan: Cillian Murphy would be awesome although unlikely.
-
commentary tracks on any of the DVDs? The had a series wrap up party on the Chosen Boz set, and she wasn't even there. Is she that ashamed of the show that made her famous? WTF!
-
Be nice if they would quit talking about and get it done. Whedon always has these little gems to make and they never get made. Should be quiet until they start production. If they do make this I hope they have a younger Giles and the one we all love. Also you have to have Ethan. Wish he had been on more BTVS episodes to torture the gang.
-
Sounds like the original Ripper idea was stolen from the Hellblazer comics.
Constantine was a young punk who dabbled in magic well before Buffy.
-
Actress turned alt .country singer song writer Helen Slater blamed superGirl when her career didnt go anywhere and refused to talk about it for almost decade, only now is slater coming back to acting. But I wonder does SMG blame Buffy for career going down the toilet so spectacularly. or is it that she cant act. its odd.
-

She was insanely hot. And she even has a playmate-like name. Although the years might have caught up with her by now.

This movie won't get made. It would be good though. Will they cast a young Giles? Will there be any of the original cast for that matter? Either way, I guess I'm in.

-
she was willow's lesbian lover on the show.
-
Likeability factor=ZERO. IF any gets there own show it should be FAITH. By the way. SMG can act, she was great in "The Body", "Forever", "The Gift", "Helpless"....and The Grudge was 100 million dollar hit for her, post Buffy. But "The Return" was terrible. I walked out on that one, and I watching it in my own house.
-
and she basically went from the last shot to Australia, I think - might have been the Scooby Doo sequel. Not sure. Whedon and she had a falling out as she thought season six was messed up (which it was). He expected his actors to just act and not talk back. But then again his ego is easily fatter then Michael Moore (which is hard to imagine but true).
-
It had better episodes on a whole than season 4 i think. I kinda of dug the whole "dark willow" angle. "Afterlife" and "Dead Things", way under rated.
-
Personality of a tree. I did like Andrew and Prin. Woods in the last season though.
-
that was brilliant! heck of a way to kill time while on the way to a creepy monestary.
-
as seen in the ANGEL episode when Anderew goes to pick up that crazy Slayer from Team Angel. When Team Angel tried to stop him from taking her, a crapload of Slayers come out of the dark to provide some backup for Anderew.
-
SMG only copied Alicia Silverstone for Buffy.
Her movies suck, except Scooby Do. Mainly because of the whole nostalgia thing.
The Grudge blew. Even the Japanese version sucked with it's vagueness. The reason it was popular, Jap version, was the weirdness of movement that EVERYONE copied after that.
SMG suffers from the whole fucking Sandra Bullock syndrome. Like Meg Ryan they both need to play dirty whores and break the goody two shoes image.
-
Seriously. Ripper? A teen show that barely was renewed every year is going to spawn a movie about the least interesting character and people are going to pay to watch that. Yeah, no.
-
god i miss the buffyverse.
-
She was either "Diamond" or "Pearl". But she's very Christian, so I doubt you'll get a pictorial now. She reportedly left Buffy due to conflicts with the subject matter.
-
Because Angel broke her neck, It was a pretty central plot point to season 2. I doubt Wheldon just wrote it in so she could leave.
-
the firefly serenity debacle. Fox own the rights to all buffy and angel chracters.
-
Wheedon and fox fell out. I dont see how this giles spin off is going happen. and once buffy ended, I think that all the cast felt it was a permanent end.
-
There are an enough people on this site who seemed to get pissed very easily and if it turns out to be a buffy prequel its going to be bashed to into the ground and walked all over.
-
Whedon's been saying this for years. Although Anthony Head is more available than the other cast members....maybe there's a part for Xander?
-
But w.
-
wrote after Buffy and I cant remember the name of it. Set in the future. and the hero was a strong willed karate kicking female captain. Wheedon said he was going to make a movie out of it.
-
... Jack the Ripper was proven to be an extraterrestrial energy-based lifeform that feeds on the emotion of terror and travels from planet to planet possessing the bodies of carbon-bassed lifeforms. Everyone knows that!
-
"Fray" is what you are referring to.
-
anyone who likes the Buffyverse should check it out. good stuff.
-
The post buffy/angel projects have been teased so much that i shouldn't expect them anytime soon...and yet, I want them to be real so much that i hold out hope. It's obvious now that the wb only said they would do angel or spike tv movies to make fans shut up about canceling Angel. It's too bad it's pretty much a bust now. And the Faith series might've happened if not for True Calling. The animated series couldn't find a home. Seems the Ripper series/movie is the only one where all parties sound like they want to do it if everything could be worked out right. Imagine what a score that could be for BBC America. This project always sounded like the most interesting of the ideas they were developing so I hope it happens. Whatever the case, though his influence is felt in a lot of today's genre shows, television needs Joss Whedon to come back. One movie every few years just doesn't compare to full 22 episode seasons.
-
Let this be true. I'm dying for some Buffyverse on tv again.
-
The Vampire Slayer? A full 22 episode season? Seriously, why not?<SP>As far as I can tell Eliza and Joss have little on their plate and I'm sure it would be a great series.
-
That would rock. Large.
-
A series with Faith as the central character, perhaps a reluctant hero with her friends often saving the day instead. Cherry Pick some popular, but available stars from the Buffyverse and focus on story rather than special effects. Keep the budget low. There's money to be made here..... but as each year ticks past, surely it will become less and less viable. Ripper will need a bigger connection to the buffyverse to make it past a single movie. The time period would work well with a previous owner of Spikes leather coat....
