Johnny Depp To Play Barney The Dinosaur!! Err Barnaby Jones!! Err Barnabas Collins?! DARK SHADOWS Movie Coming!!

Published at:  Jul 27, 2007 10:18:33 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Warner Bros is allying with Johnny Depp to realize a DARK SHADOWS movie - based on the supernatural soap opera which ran on ABC from 1966-71.

Depp, who will produce the project, has repeatedly expressed a desire to play the series' vampirical lead Barnabas Collins.

Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions.

...says THIS ARTICLE.

There have been several iterations of DARK SHADOWS since it left the air. Barnabas was most recently played by Alec Newman. Geeks may remember Newman as Paul Atreides / Muad'Dib.

That Variety quote above inadvertently evokes images of VAN HELSING - whose concept also allowed for many supernatural characters and conceits. As long as Depp & Co. avoid the same self indulgence and excess Stephen Sommers fell into with that film...this could be a lot of fun.

I like the voice over on this trailer. He talks like Moriarty.

It ain`t gonna be like Van Helsing.

    by elgyn6655321

You`ve obviously never seen the show (my mom used to watch it). It`s a totally different animal than 'Van Helsing'. This will be more along the lines of Coppola`s 'Dracula' or Tim Burton.

Though I will agree with Sommers' production designer, Alan Cameron, that he always does things big. :) And I'm still promoting my petition to stop Universal from screwing over VH fans with their direct-to-DVD plans-

    I'm officially Depp-ed out.

    by mosquito march

Depp can be an extremely entertaining actor, but he's everywhere, and the more I see of him, the less he does for me. I don't find a lot of his performances particularly multi-layered; it seems like he develops a high-concept set of mannerisms that work for the part, and then he sticks with the schtick throughout the film without ever really going through any kind of changes. I'm trying to think of the last time I was wowed by any kind of character development in a Depp film, and nothing immediately springs to mind. If anybody can name something huge and explain how it's not a one-note performance, I would genuinely like to hear about it. Maybe it'll change my opinion.

That's Patton Oswalt's character to you and me, Russ. Yaaawn. Vampire flicks are tired enough, much less the talky, romantic ones.

Good for Mr Depp- if playing Jack gives him the pull to make what he wants to- films/tv geeks dream I'd say!

On a personal note my brother spent half of last year doing sfx and music for several official Dark Shadows Audio plays and he had a blast.

What about Laura the Phoenix? The Leviathans?

    by doctor_sin

I'd rather they leave in Laura and omit the werewolves and the whole Adam/Eve/Frankenstein business. If they do the time-travel schtick to deal with Angelique, they'd be able to do a little with her. And Count Petofi.Yes, to the poster above, Dark Shadows still has fans.

If you've ever seen Dark Shadows you know it is not VH

    by reflecto

It is not some bullshit quasi-horror mostly action vehicle. The show was just balls-out craziness. At one point in 1970, they came back from the 19th century only to have a storyline involving a cult of Lovecraftian demons from the sea ("The Leviathans"), a werewolf, immortals making deals with Death (who had a parlor with a disco ball in it), ghosts, vampires, a zombie army, and a witch - all at the same time. THAT's Dark Shadows - craziness all at once. It's perfect for Depp.

    by yotzvonfrelnik

Depp as Barnabas Collins... How cool is THAT! Shame the 1991 series got steamrollered by the Gulf War, and shame the WB series didn't fly. The guy they had for Barnabas in that one would've been awesome too. Damn, I can't remember his name...! Alec Newman, yeah. Phew, almost hit POST.

I have been to one of Jonathan Frid's fabulous one-man-shows (NOT Dark Shadows related except for souvenir photos...he does one or two a year for charity events and they highlight his Shakespearean theater backround)and the place was packed. Quite a few more than "12 old dudes with plastic vampire teeth". Mr. Frid was very talented as well as extremely gracious. He stayed for hours to meet with every person who wanted to talk, shake hands, or pose for pics. If this project does happen, I hope that they DON'T give it the "Van Helsing" treatment.

    by reflecto

Vicki came back from the past, apparently knowing Barnabas' secret. In the original series, when this happened he just put the bite on her to keep her quiet, then she had her memory wiped later on.

    Lemme explain this again

    by anna valerious

I run into a lot of women who like the Sommersverse, myself included. I'm thinking it's because he's surrounded by women (his family, of course) that it does well with us gals. And some of you being guys, you don't quite understand. Though a lot of guys I run into liked "Deep Rising", which I think was a terrible film after the first five minutes.

    by howeena91

The 90's series was great too bad they ended it when they did. It was getting really good. Thanks to The war taking all the viewers is why it got canned. We need a good movie about Dark Shadows and, I hope Depp does play Branabas.
