Okay... You Want A Big Fat Juicy Exclusive Comic Book Movie Rumor? Try Some JLA Action On For Size...

Published at:  Jul 27, 2007 7:24:28 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

This is a rumor.

I want to make that clear.

Having said that, it’s a credible rumor, and one that seems to me to be worth passing along, especially while the entire geek nation is about to walk into a Warner Bros. presentation. You want something to ask them about?

Ask them about JLA.

We’ve heard that they are interested in making a JLA film, and we’ve heard that the JLA script is pretty far along in development.

How far? Far enough for a certain Warner exec to be reading it yesterday?

Greetings, insects...this is the SCARLET EYE.

As I was taking the Amtrak Surfliner down to San Diego for the 'Con yesterday, I happened to look across the aisle and spotted a gentleman reading a script. It was some sort of JUSTICE LEAGUE project. Live or animated, I do not know. Info in bold should be redacted, please:

[Someone’s identity removed for their own protection]

I know that Superman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Jon Stewart all appear in the script.

Maxwell Lord, OMAC, and someone named Talia (Al Ghul?) all appear. One of the OMACs is referred to as "Beta", so the story may involve the start of the OMAC project.

The SCARLET EYE has closed.

Fascinating. If this happens and we also get an AVENGERS movie in the next few years, that’s when we know that we’ve turned a corner into a new, more-complicated world of superhero movies. Like I said... fascinating.

    by bill brasky

Ok, I don't usually rant, but modern-day fanboy terminology is really fucking pissing me off! So, back in the 80's, people decided that they really didn't like the name 'Ariel' so they decided to just call her 'Kitty Pride.' Then, Phoenix comes back from the dead, and since it really wasn't Phoenix after all, and since 'Marvel Girl' is too 60's, lets just call her Jean Grey. JEAN GREAY IS NOT A FUCKING SUPERHERO NAME YOU 'TARDS! Neither is Kitty Pryde or John FUCKING Stewart!!!! He is Green Lantern. If you don't want confuse people, call him the "John Stewart Green Lantern," or the "Politically Correct Green Lantern (You know, in the recent DC Vein of Firestorm, Blue Beetle, The Atom, Manhunter...if you are a white male in the DCU, you are in deep shit...,) the "Big Pimpin' Green Lantern" or "Soul Train G.L..”don't give a fuck what you call him, but don't use his fucking name when you are talking about his character. Imagine, "Look, up in the sky, its a bird, its a plane, its Clark Kent!!!!!!!!" Fucking Geeks....

    by expert40

The the Batman v. Superman thing is retarded. It's a Silver Age idea, with its retarded and CONTRIVED McGuffin used to get these two men of mutual respect and begrudging friendship to fight. Batman would NEVER get married, so that script's idea of him wanting to kill the Joker because he killed her is RETARDED. He didn't kill the Joker for killing Jason Todd, and he and Superman didn't have to fight because of it. Superman talked to his friend. They talked, and Clark talked Bruce off of that ledge, because at the end of the day, "Batman is just a man who doesn't want to see anyone die." Now, a JLA movie with Singer's Superman, Nolan's Batman, Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and Wally West Flash would kick ass. And from that movie, you could launch a Green Lantern Corps movie, an Aquaman movie, a Wonder Woman movie (as the current one is floundering), and a Flash movie (because I hope to GOD that the current one with the current sucky director dies a quick death). But give up the Batman vs. Superman idea. It's tired and not true to the characters.

    by beastie

... Is Jon Stewart a Superhero or a recurring character playing the host of the Daily Show or what? It seems, coming from a non-superhero-comic-reader, that Jon Stewart would be in the Justice League. I mean he's awesome and all, but in a different way as Batman is awesome. Before anyone flames me for not reading comics, as they are a valid art form, I do read them, just more stuff like Preacher and Y the Last Man.

Most of the JLA members don't need much backstory.

    by stones_throw

Everyone knows Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman's an Amazon princess ambassador to Earth, Aquaman's king of Atlantis, the Flash is a guy who can run really fast. They can all be introduced quickly and easily if they credit the audience with some intelligence. My JLA movie would be a New Frontier type riff with the origin of Green Lantern, and perhaps introducing Martian Manhunter if the plot is an extra-terrestrial threat.

maybe not as tough to pull off as we think

    by bloo

Batman and Superman have had their inroductory movies, Routh isn't doing anything else right now, at least to my knowledge so it shouldn't be hard to get him back, Bale could do an extended cameo as Bats was never a full time member of JLA anyways, promise him just a couple of weeks of work, like 2 or 3 and there you go. We don't need introductions or origins for the following char.: Wonder Woman (if they decide to go with her), Flash, Aquaman. Those are all char that while not as well known as Bats or Supes don't need introductions, espically Flash and Aquaman a shot of flash running fast, a shot of Aquaman swimming through the water and there you go. And if they do an alien invasion story you can do breif introductions to either/or Jonn Jonz or The Green Latern (whichever one). Do some throw away lines/running gags like "Batman, nice to meet you" "So you're the Flash, I've heard about you" etc, have GL come down do a typical GL intro "I am the Green Latern defnder of Earth" blah blah balhhere's how you set it up first 45 minutes or soext shot, night, Gotham: Batman is crouching on a garagoyle looking over the city, he sees someone running, he ziplines or swings or whatever down, a petty criminal from all apperances but he was actually stealing a conisior that clearly says Wayne labsscene 2 Wayne Manor, Bruce and Alfred are working on something, recieve a message from Lucius Fox, Wayne Labs and Star Labs have been working togather on a new protype spaceship or fuel or something, Bruce turns to Alfred "looks like we're going to Metropolis"scene 3 Metropolis: Lois comes over to Clark with information the Wayne is coming to Metorpolis, Perry wants them on it, blah blah blahcut to Star labs, Clark and Lois are there with other reporters, Lois is being annoying trying to catch Bruce's attention, there's an attack, Bruce and Clark run off, Supes and Bats appear a little banter "what are you doing here" "investigating this" however the ailen attack is too much, supes to Bats "we're going to need help" Bats to supes "you get the help, I'm going to investigate this showing the canister and some alien spaceships they destroyed, Bats goes off to play dective, Supes goes recuits, there's another battle with Supes, Flash, Aquaman, WW but again butts are kicked because of lack of teamwork, GL comes down last minute and saves them, Flash is like "who is this a little banter, GL goes through a GL speech explaining who he is blah blah blahan explantion of an ailen threat (or if you go with Jonn jonez this can be done telpathically with scenes of the ailen homeworld) Batman shows up confimrs what GL just said, and he's figured out what can stop them. Big ailen fight, Bats in the Batwing shooting down spacecraft, supes on ground, land sea, GL whipping out crap from his ring, wonder woman punching stuff, Flashy running around, Aquamna I don't know have burts of water shooting out from the ocean busting crap up, short circuting ailens, there you go JLA movie

Green Lantern and Flash meet the Batman

    by yesiamaplant

This is a mistake, Warner Bros. The worlds you've built for your heroes, specifically Batman and Superman, do not allow for crossovers. They just don't make sense in that environment. Now, if you want to make a Green Lantern or Flash flick that leave themselves a little more open, that's fine, but please---don't put Superman and Batman in this film. The JLA has worked without them before, and they're better off on their own in the movies.

Why Do We Need The Routh/Bale Superman/Batman

    by tjrmusic

A Justice League movie has to have Superman and Batman (hopefully Wonder Woman too) in it. But why does everyone feel that it must be Routh and Bale in the roles. I am not saying that they are not good or that we shouldn't see more Superman and Batman movies with them. But the Superman movie wasn't bound to any of Smallville's continuity, Why should the JLA movie be bound to the continuity of these other films? Why not have completely different actors in the JLA movie?

I want this movie with the an older cast

    by liljuniorbrown

Not the current line up.Set it in a future where they already know and have exsisting relationships with each other. Let the casting suggestions begin, for an older Batman, I say go back to Keaton,Kilmer or Clooney. All of those guys were right for the part (maybe Keaton is a stretch) just in bad movies. As for an older Supes, well thats a tough one,Cage has always wanted that role but I'm thinking outside the box a little.....Travolta was mentioned when the Batman vs Superman pic was talked about,if we're going with an aged Superman I think he could do it. Add Christian Slater as the older Flash and Wahlberg as Green Lantern and you've got a JLU that i'd watch. The problem with JLU movie is if there are too many heroes you'll have kind of an overload. Maybe this would be a huge Mini Series for CW,they don't make those anymore....miniseries that is, Of course HBO or Showtime would do it bigger and then they get the premium channel money, I'm rambling now.

who is one Member of the Green Lantern Corps, so to put it simply: Green Lantern!
Well, i would like this probably a bit more than an Avengers-Movie, since i got more knowlege about the Justice League, than on the Avengers grouping.(nothing of Avengers have aired in Germany, but JLU did)

I was basically using the JLA cartoon as an template, subbing Aquaman (because he was mentioned in thea rticle) for Hawkgirl. I would cut out the whole ailen's taking over the military aspect of the JLA cartoon, maybe cut to some scenes of Bats investigating, but I think it would be a decent introduction, and of course expand on Supes searching for the other heros instead of them all just kinda stumbling togather if I remember from the JLA cartoon correctly.

    My favorite Green Lantern was...

    by redfist

Kyle Rayner- when I started reading the book I could relate more to him that Hal, since he seems more like an older father figure. I think the guy gets a bum rap and if they were to do a movie(snowballs chance in hell) I would hope they use him....next up on the talkback....70 fanboys screaming Kyle sucked ass.

How about Superman with JLA support?

    by superzario

I would like to see a "Death of Superman" trilogy. Just minus any gay superman. Part 1. "Doomsday" 2. "Reign of the Supermen" 3. "The Return of Superman" Strat the whole thing off with Lois and Clark walking out of a movie theater with "Superman Returns" on the marquee. Clark say to Lois "Do people really think I'm gay" and just like that Superman is rebooted to a better story.

DK Teaser has been taken down...

    by kid z

... But this link to a photo of "the Joker" and Maggie Gyllenhal as Rachel Dawes still works: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=22853 I'm NOT impressed! Seems they're going with the "Joker's just a guy with a scar wearing makeup idea"... which is lame because that's NOT the Joker, it's just a crook with either gender identity issues or a die-hard Cure fan. Didn't take Nolan long to pull a Raimi, did it?

thank you for letting me know how shitty this movie already is. I can save my money for something else now. Care to share your thoughts on the JLA? Should I bother with this one, or does the script already seem too commercial?

    KINGDOM COME BITCHES!!!

    by expert40

Okay, fuck current JLA which would never work without Batman and Superman. And the odds of them getting Routh and Bale into a JLA movie is slim to none. So let's do a futuristic Kingdom Come JLA movie. This is fucking perfect! Paul Newman can be the broken Bruce Wayne. Superman wouldn't have to be the same age as Paul Newman Bruce Wayne, because while he is noticably older with some gray, he doesn't age at the same rate as human, so I say get someone like Alec Baldwin to don the cape (get his ass into shape first). Lucy Lawless can be Wonder Woman (she's younger because she doesn't age). Robert Redford can be Alan Scott. The Rock can be the grown-up Billy Batson / Crazy Captain Marvel. In a twist, Michael Keaton can be the 50 year-old Dick Grayson / Red Robin. And Liv Tyler can be his hot-ass daughter, Nightstar.

JLA & Avengers Doesn't Complicate Much

    by mrdinky

Certainly there are property right issues because Marvel and to a lesser extent DC have pimped-out their characters to more different production houses/studios than even exist (anymore).

as much as I would like to see certain team up story arcs, get real. these movies are not going to produce a more complicated super hero world.

I guess I can see how you might think that simply because of the necessity to maintain continuity. but I should also point out that there really isn't any continuity in the comics themselves (except for crossover arcs). and I would expect FAR less time dedicated to character development for a team of superheroes than for one hero and one or two villains. so it's exciting but also scary.

    kingdom come

    by whoisthisguy

Kingdom Come would make a bad ass movie. But they would never make it. Some idiot at the studio would think that audiences don't want to see an old Superman and Batman.

Favreau is already ruining IRON MAN by making it an ULTIMATE film with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury.
