What’s Happening At 10:00 AM In San Diego On Friday?! DARK KNIGHT Mystery Unfolding Right Now!
So far, so smart for the viral marketing techniques employed by THE DARK KNIGHT, the next Batman film from Warner Bros. I know everyone’s all a-twitterpated from the pickle tickle that CLOVERFIELD/1-18-08/whateverthefuck is giving them, but let’s give it up for that original Joker reveal on the IbelieveInHarveyDentToo site.
They’re at it again. And I wish I knew someone in San Diego (coughQuintcough) who was going to be there at 10:00 AM tomorrow when... something is going to happen.
I’ve been bombarded tonight with links to the site Why So Serious?, which appears to be a call to arms, a challenge to join the Joker’s crew. The only way to join the crew is to show up tomorrow for an audition at a specific latitude and longitude that a wee bit of online research pinpoints somewhere across the street from the convention center in San Diego.
My favorite source for the link is a guy who says he found a dollar bill on the street in San Diego that had been defaced so George Washington had Joker makeup drawn on and the "one dollar" had been replaced with "WhySoSerious". His brother then put "WhySoSerious.com" into his browser, just to check, and found the site.
I couldn’t open the site properly in Mozilla, but Internet Explorer worked fine for me. There’s a countdown in process right now, and if anyone’s planning to participate on the ground tomorrow, let me know.
I know that the rumor for the last week or two has been that there would be no DARK KNIGHT presence at the Con, but what if that was bullshit? You know... like that description of the teaser trailer that everyone kept e-mailing us last week that turned out to be nothing like the actual trailer that's leaked now. What if the DARK KNIGHT presentation is only accessible via this event?
Makes you wonder. After all, if Warner Bros. is planning to run a bunch of geeks around on some sort of cyber scavenger hunt and real-world outdoor event in that 107 degree weather, they'd better have something worthwhile at the end of it.
I guess we'll see in the morning, eh?

They should have the Joker himself turn up at the event and kill a bunch of comic book types with smilex. A bit extreme, I know, but it would get people's attention. Holy fuck, various nerd types would say, it's the god damn Joker! I would happily watch this new Batman film knowing the villain was an actual mass-murderer.I realise this approach is not for everyone, but it's something to think about. The future of viral marketing synergy shenanigans or somesuch.

Anyways, for a teaser not to show anything substantial in the days of internet spies is silly. We are already teased by youtube collages, show us a glimpse of something.

seriously dude...wtf was up with that? the theatre actually groaned when they were revealed...guess the public isnt clammoring for a film featuring badly rendered CG singing rodents like the studio thought. oh and i'd also like to point out that the Regal theatre i went to DID NOT shot TDK teaser AND didnt fixed the fucked up sound despite myself complaining about it 3 times...not to mention the other patrons that complained. i love going to a comedy and having to strain to fucking hear ANYTHING!!! Remember that teaser for Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom that showed only clouds and maps with text over it. That shit drove me crazy as a kid. This is no exception. But at least the Temple teaser had a new shot of Indy at the end.

A good teaser should really rachet up the enthusiasm, but this is just a total dud. And Ledger's voice as the Joker just seems "blah" imo. -

I just checked it out and I agree it's not exactly earth shattering. If a couple of soundclips is all they've got, surely it's better to go without the teaser for a while, wait until they've got something better to offer.It's that first shot of Ledger as the Joker we're all waiting for, so it's disappointing that we only hear him.

I wouldn't really consider him a "slob serial killer." I think what we'll get here is a gradual decent to that. As the trailer eludes to, the mob turns to him. It's almost as if he becomes their leader. So, I think he starts out as a criminal, robbing and killing when necessary to get the cash money, but I think after multiple run-ins with Batsy, and an incident causing horrific scarring, he goes over the edge.

For those who are disappointed that it was just the teaser, I am sure WB and the batfolks didn't intend for the teaser to get leaked on youtube already. What are they supposed to do say "Oh well its on youtube, lets just forget this whole campaign." No they put it out and it was really fun to wonder what all was going to happen. I am sure the folks in SD had a blast running around and they got a few cool pieces of memrobilia. For those who don't like the trailer, all I have to say is the batfolks are seem to be sticking to there word in the last campaign. "See you in December". I know we have got a few pics, but the last police report on the page with the trailer link even mentioned "See you in December", so I could us getting a few similar teasers with no footage between now and then, if any at all. Just my thoughts, sorry so long. I think the teaser did what it was supposed too, make us want more.

the more I realize how great this teaser is. It's obvious that everyone involved is really taking this property seriously, and the teaser verifies that they're really trying to establish this version of Joker as an iconic figure.
The movie is a YEAR away, and people are complaining about not seeing enough footage in the teaser. Fucking hilarious! -

Nothing short of the movie being available itself would have made most people here happy. this was one of the highlights of the last month for me with all the oppressive rain and disgusting humidity we had in NY. Bravo Nolan, you clever bastard!

Fuck off! Looks to me like we're finally going to get a frightening, unsettling, psychotic portrayal of the Joker. I've had enough of the so-called stylish, huckster clown versions that we've already seen.And that laugh is spot-on. It's time for diabolic dementia!

It's going to be Bruce Wayne V. Indiana Jones next summer. Damn, I can't wait. I hope the Joker is more along the lines of "The Killing Joke." I'm also interested in a further exploration of Wayne. The only other Batman film that was actually interested in Bruce Wayne as a character was The Mask of the Phantasm, and in my opinion has yet to be beaten as the best version of Batman on the big screen. He's the American pop-culture version of the Byronic hero.

Fuck. What crazy marketing, using jets to spell out a phone number in the sky that you call and you get one of the joker's victims. This is awesome. Now all they need to do is make fake news reports on real news channels of a serial killer and show his sketch.

Ok. The one with the Batman logo is a waste of time, and the one on YOUTUbe was obviously not bootlegged in a theater as the film images of the cards appear to be filmed by a camcorder. You know, no deep focus, bad lighting. Id be surprised if these are real. BATMAN by Burton is still the only film worth a shit. Cut that Prince song out and its damn near perfect. The last one was boring, a cool movie but not very Batman for my tastes. I dont care how he trains to become batman. THe strengtht of batman is the villians.

Really? Because that's been done and, quite frankly, it's not frightening. There is no terror in a villain whose only gear is "goofball".As for him being "dandy", well from what glimpses we've seen of Ledger, he looks dandy to me. Purple suit, vest, and gloves? Check. In fact, you could say his fashion sense seemingly resembles the look from the early comics. And I think it's fair to say that even the Joker has to start out somewhere.

Unless they are the undead, which, perhaps you are. Grounding in realism doesn't hurt Batman (Superman on the other hand...), but making Batman too realistic takes all of the fun out of it. It's a superhero movie. Mr. Nice Gaius, I'm not saying to do a repeat of Nicholson's Joker or Romero's - agreed they are not very scary. The animated series Joker is frightening and has never been done live action. Was Alan Moore's Killing Joke Joker (who I don't even like) scary? Part of it is the contrast of his appearance, it's part of the joke. Joker-as-a-cutter with the serial killer vibe seems to be more of the faux realism that I find to be unimaginative and that I thought Nolan said they would be steering away from.

I don't know where you're getting your Nolan information from but I thought it was pretty well known that he was basing TDK on THE KILLING JOKE and the Joker's earliest comic book appearances. (Apparently, Christian Bale has even championed elements of THE LONG HALLOWEEN.) I would say that both of those sources are suitable for Nolan's realistic take on the franchise especially when you consider that Batman doesn't actually have any superpowers. And I think it's from that perspective that you need to view their approach.The original Joker was/is a serial killer. He murdered on a mass scale for his own amusement. I'm sorry if you find this "unimaginative". (I suppose one could say that it's a element that we've all seen in countless other media.) But it's the character's origin and it's definitely a deeper, creepier psychological pool to swim in. I would rather see something truly unsettling over yet another cartoonish portrayal. No offense to the admirable work of Mr. Hamill.

This is entirely a personal preference. I believe the later version of the Joker is more interesting and has more depth, so perhaps my "meta" comment was out of line.
