UPDATED with pictures!!! Spock confirmed... twice!

Published at:  Jul 27, 2007 6:27:07 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts... Quint here. I'm working on the big wrap up for the big Paramount panel right now. But I wanted to hit this to you now.

JJ Abrams confirmed Zachary Quinto as Spock... but the big news is that Leonard Nimoy is also returning. More info in a minute... gotta run to an interview, then I'll update with photos and details!

More details... Shatner to be involved only if they find a good place for him. The script is what makes everybody excited about it. They inferred that Nimoy is coming back as older Spock, not as a new character.

When asked by a fan why he decided to put his support behind this new Trek, Nimoy responded with, "It has a brilliant young director, a great script... I guess the real answer is that it was logical." The audience loved it. How great was that?

Am I really the only one who thought Sylar was one of the least interesting villains on TV for a long time? I mean come on, Pinto's morphin-induced "acting" almost put me to sleep. While Vulcans normally don't express a lot emotions, Spock should at least have presence and charisma. I just don't see it with this guy.
I'll wait to see what Abrams still has in store for us, but for now, I'm dissapointed.

It'll be a Star Trek filled with unresolved plot lines, characters the writers have no idea what to do with, and an unplanned storyline filled with pointless arcs that they constantly pull out of their ass. The ending will be a cliffhanger that they have no intention of resolving either.

THE RESURRECTION OF JAMES T. KIRK!!

    by truthmaster

Shatner wrote a few Trek novels addressing Kirk's return thanks to the Borg. It featured, of course, all the Next Gen characters, but also including an older Ambassador Spock and a REALLY older McCoy (like, 140 years old or something).

BUT since this storyline wouldn't be logical for this particular film, it would be GREAT to have the set up of the film being Ambassador Spock overseeing some brand new medical technique (perhaps developed by Dr. McCoy shortly before his own death)that allows Spock to "resurrect" his old friend.

But maybe then again maybe not.

What they'll probably do is have Ambassador Spock recalling Kirk and his meeting (DUH!!). Anyway, imagine we'll finally see Spock addressing Kirk's saddening demise (AKA shot in the back).

    by nomihs

As I am sure you know, the holodeck wasn't in existence until TNG. Obviously before TOS the holodeck might have been a theory but not reality. I am guessing you mean a futuristic Trek world (ala TNG or later) where a couple of cadets are walking through the halls of the academy talking about the "good old days of Star Fleet" so they head to the holodeck and shoot the shit with Capt. Kirk and Co. Then James T. tells a story of when he and Bones would chase skirts around the galaxy, hilarity ensues and BAM! we are taken back. Sounds good, I still say make Kirk wear one of those "Shats" from that T.V. show Shatner had. Funniest unreality reality show quote from Bill Shatner.."If it's not a SHAT it's not a hat." A color coded system of berets, Red, Yello, and Green. Great stuff.

i think spock should fire a genesis torpedo to the surface of planet veridian and brings kirk to life. or future guy from enterprise takes kirk from his era only for a day or a week, or mirror kirk is in fact real kirk because they swuitched, this is a fantasy world , kirk can return in any form including via holodeck, via Q, Q2, or even we can go to starfleet museum and see that nexus duplicates kirk and one of the kirks is in astral form inside the enterprise b or still in the nexus i just think this things in ten minutes im sure any internerd can find a way to bring back kirk and then tell it to abrams.

picard, after his return from veridian tells spock the location of kirk´s grave, time later, spock with sulu, uhura and chehov, collect the body, and put kirk in a frozen chamber until he discovers during the following decades an ancient vulcan way to resurrect kirk. this can be told in five minutes during the initial credits or trhough the movie.
and this way he have picard, kirk, spock, sulu, chejov and uhura all in one movie and we can during the movie remenber maccoy and scotty

when picard goes, kirk raises from his grave because he can make his vital signs go very slow.

Just don't know what to think

    by tylermo

I'm a huge original series, original movies(not ST V except for Bones being confronted by the death of his father, Spock telling the Klingon, "Damn you, sir. You will try." and some of the Yosemite scenes, Next Gen, DS9, only select Voyager eps, and mainly seasons 3 and 4 of Enterprise. That said, this movie probably shouldn't happen. I've seen a little bit of Lost, and JJ seems like he'll do alright, but I'm just worried this will reek of 90's-2000's political correctness for starters. Yeah, even the 60's Trek reeked of liberalism, but at least that was during a time when it was needed.(racial harmony at a time of racial division, etc.) Plus, they'll probably neuter the established characters. I wish the film best of luck. Maybe Nimoy saying the script is great, or Shatner POSSIBLY coming back is a good sign, or maybe Leonard needs work. My opinion, Trek should have taken a break after Enterprise, then maybe come back with a tv show. Somewhat later in than the DS9,and Voyager timeline, and completely new characters. Not sure that would be any better than the last two series, but probably a better move. Less risky than screwing with established characters.

    Shatner part in the film

    by gad

Reading my CNN I see that Abrams says that Shatner - "William Shatner, who played the role in the original TV series, would likely also have a part in the film.

"It has to be worthy, of him and of you," Abrams told fans, adding that production is slated to begin in November."

See now that's what I'm talking about. Dude needs to respect the cannon, respect the main guys who still live. Like a previous poster wrote brilliantly, have Shatner and Spock drinking Romulean Ales and reminiscing about days gone past and then fade to all the reimagining he wants. Make it so.

    90's-2000's political correctness by tylermo

    by gad

That's what certainly finally killed Star Trek shows for me. Stupid ass liberal writers trying to 'correct' the old Trek with their international UN solutions to good old shoot em up problems of pulp entertainment television. I'm less worried about seeing more of that sort of crap with this movie though, making a movie that people want to watch and which will make money is more of a priority than our reeducation via TV series has been.

    Even or Odd?

    by micturatingbenjamin

If this is an even-numbered Trek it will be good...if it's odd..it will likely suck dog balls.

Excited for more big screen Trek though!

it's an odd number, but that curse never really applied

    by automation overlord

ok so number one was lame, but number 3 was good, 5 sucked balls, but generations was enjoyable, and insurection in my opinion is the second best Next gen movie. so yeah some of the bad treks are the odd numbered ones, but not all of them are terrible and nemisis (an even number) was sub-par at best. The odd/even curse is more fan made thing and if your gonna write this one off already just cause it'll be the 11th film then your not a true trek fan. In a perfect world this will lead to more films and even a new series, hell give as a series involving the young cast as the early days of the enterprise just after kirk became captian

    Shatner SUCKS!!!

    by theghostwholurks

The greatest moment in Star Trek was when Shatner's Kirk died the lamest death possible: falling off a bridge like the feeble old man he was.No death in space combat... No heart attack while satisfying 27 green space hookers... No noble sacrifice to save the universe... Just tripping, "I've fallen and I can't get up," then pssst! He's Tribble food.Shatner's spent the vast majority of his career dissing the Trekkie fandom, as well as hyping up his role in the series at the expense of the other (and often, better) actors he worked with.Only in the last 15 years has he decided to act grateful for everything the role's given him, but the guy's STILL an incredibly pompous ass.The thought of him festering in his own stew, frustrated that the producers of the new Trek would DARE to ask Nimoy and NOT him to be in the film gives me no end of pleasure! :) Newsflash, Shatner: Your character is DEAD!!! The franchise has thrived for decades without your version of Kirk, and frankly, is far better off. Live with it.Plus, I STILL think he killed his wife, before she could divorce him. "NOBODY takes James T. Kirk to the cleaners! NOBODY!!!!">:OScrew Shatner.

    by superninja

if he can actually act. Nimoy was very charming and Spock had angst, but was not angsty the way every sensitive character is now portrayed. I'd love to believe they can pull this off. Like the titles design.

    Time line is bogus

    by burmafrd1944

Unless you totally blow off the Cage/Menagerie episode. In there it is clear that Spock was on the Enterprise with Pike before Kirk was even in the Academy. Kirk was only 30 or 31 when given the Enterprise. That meant that since he went into the academy no earlier then age 17 he had only been in starfleet for 14 years at most, counting the academy. In the episode, it has been 17 years as the Commodore puts it- since the Enterprise was at that planet.

Ive been a Trekkie for almost 25 years now.Every cast in every incarnation has said the exact same thing about every movie.Star Trek cast =original fan boys=Like fan boys, that extreme level of "loyalty" does a disservice to the community.Just once Id love to hear a Trek Alumnist(of any level of involvement)say:"This fuckin script sucks ass balls,I wont be a part of it."

    by big dumb ape

I say he looks pretty damn good in that photo. And sure the Shat has put on weight, but he's the FUCKING SHAT. Who the hell is EVER going to do Kirk better than the man who DID make him...literally...a global ICON?After seeing that picture I have to say my enthusiasm for this project actually DROPPED a shitload. Simply because I'm NOT sitting here thinking "Oh boy, Quinto looks like he might be able to pull off the part"......But instead I'm looking at Nimoy and saying "Fuck this reboot shit! That IS Spock standing right there. So wise up and put him and the REAL KIRK back on the screen one more time."For crying out loud, all they have to do is sit on a Bridge and say things like "I'm detecting an energy signature" and "Fire Photon Torpedoes, full spread!" Even at their age they'd STILL kick Quinto and New Kirk's ass. And I bet the average movie goer would agree!

I couldn't agree with you more. You cannot replace icons and that's what they are trying to do while the icons themselves are still very much alive and able to play those roles. Which I guess they will be doing in this movie and more or less "passing the torch" (which I am sure we will hear in some review) to the new cast playing those beloved roles. It's a sad sad time in the world of Star Trek.

Fuck it. At least I got my original series box set on DVD and all the movies. I guess that's all the trek I need.

    Allpowerfulwizard, you're dead on target

    by big dumb ape

It would be one thing IF the actors were dead...it would even be one thing if they were waaaaaay too old to resume the roles...but the simple truth is they're not. As I said before, looking at that picture of Quinto with Nimoy, and how good Nimoy still looks, it's the same reaction as the Karen Allen/Marion returns Talkback. You see the person, see how good they still look, at which point you get pumped up and say, "Yeah, baby! Bring it on! I want to see the ORIGINAL people back again."Plus, this isn't like STAR WARS where you STARTED OFF with an old Kenobi (and clearly Alec Guiness LOOKED old as he imprinted Obi Wan into our cultural consciousness). This isn't like SW where you could get away with saying "Hey, let's do some prequels and show Obi Wan in his prime, since we've never seen that" -- because that's the truth Abrams is ignoring. WE HAVE SEE IT.I mean, seriously, when you really, really stop and think about this, there's some seriously fucked up logic to Abrams thinking here. I swear, I can picture him sitting across from any of us and saying "Yeah, this is going to be great! I'm gonna start the movie off with Shatner and Nimoy sitting around, looking the way they do now, and they'll talk about the past...at which point I'm gonna stage a cool transition onscreen, at which point I'm gonna show you what Kirk and Spock were like when they were younger and more virile and out kicking ass across the galaxy on their first 5-year mission together."At which point I know I'd say, "Oh. Back to when they were younger and more virile and kicking ass on their first 5-year mission together. Right, got it. You mean JUST LIKE IN THE TV SHOW when they WERE younger and more virile and out kicking ass on their first 5-year mission together?!?"The more and more I think about this one, how Abrams ever sold Paramount on this is once again a testament to the Jeff Goldblum rule of THE LOST WORLD and yet another worst idea in the long, sad history of bad ideas...
