I Guess It’s Official!! HEROES’ Quinto Is Young Spock!!
I am – Hercules!!
A Television Critics Association “Heroes” event recently transpired, and it may have given us a glimpse of a coming Comic Con announcement.
From the TCA blog of TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello:
• Zachary Quinto was neither confirming nor denying reports that he's in line to play a young Spock in Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek pic. "I'm under strict orders not to say anything," he said. Luckily, my BFF Greg Grunberg was under no such gag order. "How exciting is that?" he enthused. "Now I've got to beg, plead and scrape to get in that movie!"
Strict orders? From whom??
Note that "Heroes" mastermind Tim Kring has also given his blessing to Quinto, who plays supervillain Sylar on the NBC series, donning the pointy ears.
Quinto’s Trek casting has likely long been an open secret on the “Heroes” set, as Grunberg is Abrams’ best friend since childhood and is almost certainly responsible in some way for bringing Grunberg’s “Heroes” co-star to Abrams’ attention.

haha! suck it nerds!
-
all you fuckin geeks that think heroes is the greatest television show in history are wrong.. it is poorly written and full of plot holes and flawed characters. Oh, and of course there is no death since some of the characters that "died" are somehow back for season 2 (Isaac Mendes?!?!)
I call shenanigans on Heroes. -
He seems to have the look. We shall have to see if he can act at all even close to the level of Nimoy.
-
This is a dicey idea. I hope this movie doesnt shit the bed...
-
love the show.
-
does anyone know if this guy is a good actor or not? he's pretty one-note on Heroes.
-
now all they need is Freddie Prinze Jr. as Capt. kirk and we're ready to ROCK!!!!!!!
-
It got to the point where I couldn't picture anyone else playing a young Spock.
-
...right down to the acting chops.
-
. . . woulda' made a TERRIFIC Sulu, with Lee's mad bilingual skills and all. But, he and Quinto in the same motion picture? Wouldn't that violate some real or imagined "cast familiarity" edict or otherwise?
-
JJ is going for the unknown actors since Matt Damon shunned JTK.
-
He was one of the bright spots in Heroes somewhat uneven acting. Now who's Kirk?
-
Heroes is good, fuck all the trolls. Lost is great, fuck all the trolls. Oh, and FUCK ALL THE TROLLS!
-
Heh heh
-
His voice isn't deep or monotone enough.
-
I think that this is a good idea. It may work.
-
Now that they have Spock I was kinda thinking how cool would it be if Hayden played Capt Kirk... Think about it - he could live long and prosper with the force!
-
Zachary Quinto is perfect for the role.
-
Desmond as Mr.Scott
-
Nowhere does it say it's a done deal. It just says he can't talk about it, which probably means he's being strongly consider. So though that's cool news, it's no where near official.
-
He has a kind of odd Leonard Nimoy look about him.
-
I was hoping for Tobias Menzies (ROME, Casino Royale) for Spock: http://tinyurl.com/2teqh2
-
Doc Cox from Scrubs as Bones. Think about it...
Seriously though what is this film gonna be? Star trek Babies?
Why do we have to keep going back in time in the Star trek universe? Did nothing interesting happen after the end of Voyager? I guess I kind of answered my own question there.
-
...I thought the announcement was that Nimoy was going to play, like some long unseen character named Sylar. (I don't watch Heroes). "HEROES' Sylar is Spock!!" Like saying "LOST's Jacob is Captain Kirk!!" if Shatner were cast as Jacob on Lost. Anyway...
-
(cause I don't watch Heroes) and he looks not-so-shabby for the part.
On a side note, this headline and the next one are Paramount pictures-related + all the Paramount ads on the site (Stardust, Transformers and Iron Fucking Man!!! that one is not even finished!!!)... I really hope they pay big bucks, because it's an invasion. I miss the Tiger Stripe John Wayne ads... -
There is no other choice.
-
...so just throw some pointy ears on the fucker and turn him loose.
-
...way to be cutting edge, AICN.
-
Since when? That hasn't been confirmed. In fact, all the gossip says Damon WANTS to be Kirk and it's JJ who needs convincing. Damon makes the perfect Kirk. He's just about the right age for Kirk's first expedition as captain. Quinto as Spoke is a little young, Brody might have been better. But Quinto has that emotionless thing about him. Now, the other chip needs to fall, and Lt. Dan needs to be cast as Bones. Bones was always older than Kirk and was something of an older brother to him. Sinese and Damon would be perfect for this.
-
Sorry
-
is way better than this xmen clone
-
But seriously this is great casting.
-
would make a good kirk
-
Such a dynamic young actor, such a range, so intense...he must be Kirk
-
Once she gets out of jail, the part will be hers.
-
BTW, Matt Damon's getting a bit high-and-mighty these days (trashing Bond, etc.). Who needs him for Kirk?
-
... and Damon DOES say that he's not going to be Kirk, that they want a younger guy. This is a mistake on JJ's part, because that makes me think that this is going to be some lame academy movie. It's already been ESTABLISHED by "Where No Man Has Gone Before" that Kirk and Spock DID NOT MEET BEFORE KIRK TOOK COMMAND!!! They did not know each other. In fact, Kirk never wanted Spock as his 1st Officer, he wanted his BFF, Gary Mitchell, the guy with crazy God-powers and silver eyes. It sounds like JJ is seriously getting ready to screw this up. He could have done the first mission under Kirk's command with Damon as the PERFECT Kirk. Now, it sounds like he making a gay Friends episodes with a bunch of twenty-somethings, which is so wrong.
-
cause then later maybe they could turn it into a television series.
-
They are sure to have Beyonce or some other hack play Uhura. At that point friggin Drew Carey could play kirk for all I care - 'cause it couldn't suck any worse.
-
It just *has* to be.

First a disclaimer: These next two items might be old news given how much people scrounge for information on CLOVERFIELD/1-18-08, but I only saw it today, so I thought I'd share to be safe. So if it IS old news, apologies to all. So speaking of Abrams, I was killing some time online today and it's funny how one thing will lead to another. I was clicking on links and suddenly came upon this amazing porn site that actually shows -- Whoops! Wrong story!Anyway, in clicking on links and hopping around, I came across a site called Horror-Movies.ca, which I'd never seen before. At their site they have a story about a guy who posted a quick anecdote/photo on the "Unifiction message board", where he states that he was at some sort of movie warehouse sale/convention thingy and at a table selling movie posters he came across one that had the tag line "Monstrous" at the top and then "1-18-08" at the bottom. The poster itself is a shot of a headless Statue of Liberty looking at NYC.The odd thing is he took a picture of the poster with his cell phone that's incredibly blurry. So was he just a crappy photographer or is this yet another staged stunt to release more viral marketing, to sort of let you know there's a poster coming, but they won't show it to you clearly yet? You got me. Either way, here's the link for anyone interested. And again, sorry if this is old news...http://tinyurl.com/26w6vd
-
Again, sorry if this is old news as well, but in that same article -- and picking up on the tag line "Monstrous" in the supposed teaser poster -- they also note that Paramount has now acquired a new domain name, perhaps to be another Cloverfield site. Here's the link to the registry showing that Paramount has now acquired "TheMonstrousMovie.com"...http://tinyurl.com/2h646n

I have to admit, I'm still baffled by this. As a geek who enjoyed TREK growing up, do I want to see that universe return? Sure, why not. Could be fun assuming it actually IS done fun and in an exciting way for once (translation: Berman and Braga aren't allowed anywhere near the Paramount lot). But that said, is there really some amazing pent up demand amongst the general public for Shatner-less Kirk and Nimoy-less Spock stories that I'm unaware of? I just don't see it myself. To me, those guys are just TOO iconic in their roles. I just don't see it as recasting a character like Tarzan, for example, where people would be more willing to see a new actor or a new take on things.Hell, let's be honest. If you were sitting in a theater and a Paramount rep came out and said "Ok, we're now going to show you two trailers, and we want you to tell us which one you prefer"...at which point they showed you a "new Trek" trailer starring Damon (or whoever)/Quinto versus a "classic" Trek trailer that showed Shatner and Nimoy going at it one more time. Seriously, which one do you think audiences would go more ballistic and chest bumping over? Then again, I am the one who argued in the recent HALLOWEEN talkback that perhaps we just have to view Zombie's take on Mike Meyer's as "this generation's version" and as something they can call all their own -- while we old fogeys will cling to Carpenter's version and will have our DVDs to play whenever we want to see "our" version.I don't know. I just think that for someone of Abram's caliber, if you wanted to put your feet into TREK waters, why couldn't you just do something ORIGINAL so you'd have a wide open path to do whatever you want? Then again, since this is a reboot, maybe that IS the way Abrams and Paramount are looking at this and I just stupidly missed that point entirely. Maybe it IS their intention to have a wide open field by saying this will be a TOTAL reboot of the TREK universe, and that anything we've ever seen to date -- TOS, Next Gen, DS9, books, whatever -- are all wiped out now. This truly is Day One in the Trek universe all over again, and NONE of that other stuff ever happened. If that were the case, I'd almost salute Paramount for being THAT ballsy and for rolling the dice THAT much given how much you will piss off alot of fans. Then again, the latest plans call for Nimoy to make a cameo or something, so I guess this has to fit into continuity somehow. After all the years of TREK that there have been, I'm sure this thing is going to collide with something in continuity and some fans will bitch, but I guess we'll just have to see what toes Abrams and crew do ultimately step on.So assuming we have to accept a new crew, as far as casting goes, I have to say I hate -- I mean HATED -- the idea of Damon. First of all, he's freakin' OLDER than Shatner was when he starred in the show. So what's the point in doing a younger Kirk who's actually older? That's rather fucked up. Besides, Shatner Kirk had WAY more spark and life than fucking Matt Damon has EVER shown onscreen. So if they're casting the parts younger ala Quinto, then I still vote for Chris Evans at this point, in terms of people that come to mind. He was pretty much the only good thing to come out of the FF movies and was the only one who actually showed some real onscreen spark and personality. The way I saee it, those were fairly crappy and disappointing films and he still rose to the occassion, so plugged into an actual GOOD movie, I think Evans could make for a lively young Kirk, and would make a good pairing with Quinto as I try to picture it in my head.Oh, and I agree with pretty much everyone in the known universe aboutSinese. Bones is supposed to be the older, wiser friend and he would be dead on perfect...
-
You know it makes sense.
-
Wow! just wow! (shakes head) I mean...wow, your folks must be proud...wow
-
I just don't think this guy has the acting chops for prime time. much less the big screen.
-
expect Aint It Cool to report it by the time Iron Man is released on DVD.
-
Very happy with Quinto!!!
James Franco for Kirk!!!
Better have Shatner in the film in some capacity since Nimoy's in it!!! -
Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl), Jackie Earle Haley(Rorschach), Matthew Goode(Veidt), Billy Crudup(Manhattan), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian) and Malin Akerman(Silk Spectre)....okay, we al saw this coming (except Morgan as the Comedian) but you might as well post something to say its OFFICIAL....come AICN get off your asses!
-
... I'm sorry, man, but this isn't a little issue of canon. This wasn't some throwaway. This was one of the best episodes in the series (not the pilot) which set up the burgeoning reluctant friendship between Spock, Kirk, and Bones. Kirk had to lose Gary Mitchell to become a better captain. If Mitchell had been his 1st Officer, shit would have gone to hell. I'm sorry, but this is sacrosanct canon. Kirk and Spock never met before Kirk's first mission as Enterprise's captain. Now, if this a total reimagination of the series, a complete relaunch like Casino Royale, I can get behind this. But obviously, it isn't, because Nimoy is going to provide a frame story. But if this is the way it's going, I hope to GOD that Chris Evans has absolutely nothing to do with this movie. Ryan Gosling is the right actor to play Kirk. He's got real acting chops. Chris Evans is crap. Gosling went toe to toe with Sir Anthony and did well. If this is the way JJ wants it, and I completely disagree with it, but if this is the way, then Senise still works, but Gosling has to be Kirk.
-
So who will play Kirk and Bones?
-
I don't feel him as spock. What else has the guy been in so I can see his range? But then again, I guess to play a Vulcan you don't need much range.
-
I would have preferred Wes Bentley or somebody. Not sure if that Heroes guy can even act. Some of his work on the show was borderline.
-
"Damnit, Jim! I'm a doctor not a drama teacher!"
-
I shouldn't be hot for Spock.
-
He has it down.
-
He IS Young Spock.
-
In the words of Picard "make it so"
-
So, since fucking "BFF" is now this big mainstream rediscovery (thank you, cell phone ad), I think it's time to shoot anyone on site who willingly speaks or writes it.
-
Good looking enough to be Spock, resembles Nimoy.
-
'cause that's how Spock rolls.
-
When word came out about the Star Trek Prequel. Ever since season 3 on 24, i've been saying this guy was born to play a young Spock. He looks exactly like him.
-
* drool *
-
AND FUCKING SYLAR??? Ugh. On second thought though, if they did recast Star Wars, Nathan Fillion and Gigi Edgely would rule as Han and Leia.
-
I just caught a few Star Trek Voyager episodes on DVD. The brotha that plays the vulcan should've gotten an Emmy or something. Excellent job. And Janeway was the shit too.
-
just as long as there's no fuckin' time traveling. Star Trek strayed from stories about the human condition and potential and vision to tachion fields and time traveling.
And, Gary Sinise should be ordered by congressional decree to be Bones. -
Katherine Hepburn in Space, anyone? Worst captain EVER!!!
-
Do you even watch Star Trek TOS? Go fuck yourselves.
-
Think about it. Out of all the Star Trek series including Enterprise, who kicked the most alien ass; Janeway. I won't even get started on how she smacked the Borg around like cosmic hoes.
-
He's not to well known as say the rumored Adrain Brody is. I'm fine with it.
-
"I'll show you, I'm gonna get that wang" "Oh my God..." "I get a strong smell from my wang." "You know, I don't think you're Ricardo Montalban!!"
-
the guy from Rome who played Brutus would be a much better fit.
-
don't know why, but it's just awesome. I love this guy.
-
Tobias Menzies! Every time he showed up on Rome, I'd shout out, "ya Spock-lookin' muthafucka!" But he's English, and he might not be able to sound... like a young Nimoy. (What was I going to say, "American?" Spock's not from there!)
-

-
as the sophisticates sex robot sent from the future to change the life of a young Captain James T. Kirk forever. Meeeeeeow. Myself ? I would have cast Beetlejuice as Spock. Baba Booey ! Baba Booey ! Baba Booey !
-
Just picture Jason Biggs with those pointy ears and blue starfleet jersey on. There can be no other. Damn fine actor too, such range.
-
Are you a fucking moron? Maybe Stiffler should play Kirk too. Right?
-
Sorry, but if you think about it, you’ll understand why Gary Sinse will not be cast as McCoy. With the choice of Quinto as Spock, it’s clear to me they’re going for a more youthful cast. Yes, it’s true that McCoy always looked older than Kirk, but not by same measure in which Sinse’s McCoy would if he were cast.
Remember, Deforest Kelly was 46 when TOS first aired… and Sinse is already 52. It’s just not gonna happen, regardless of his similarity in looks.
Besides, if (by some serious stretch of the imagination) this actually becomes a hit movie, it makes far more sense cast younger actors who are relatively unknown if they want to move forward with more movies and/or a new TV series based on that cast.
-
who is going to care about this movie? 2 days of box office then a loud thud. will remind the studio of Star Trek: Nemesis all over again..
-
He'll ruin the movie if he makes it in.
-
and really, that's all that matters
-
He's been warming up his accent for a decade!
-
I really hope they don't incorporate time travel in this one. It was cute in ST:IV and fine in First Contact, but pleaaaase refrain from using TT for the sake of possible cameos and plot fillers.
-
i'm all for seeing more adventures of kirk and spock and the old enterprise crew just as long as its not a reboot or it doesn't alter establish trek continuity, and for the love of god, give us a retro design ship, make it look like a ship that would have existed in kirk's era, i loved enterprise, but it bugs me seeing plasma screens when the original enterprise never had them
-
...if he really has been cast as Spock, there is officially no reason to see the film... it's already ruined.
-
who would have been you pick for spock?
-
The whole idea of the time frame is the problem. The initial rumors of Adrien Brody as 'Spock', Matt Damon as 'Kirk' and Gary Sinise as 'McCoy' weren't a problem for me. But since Abrams seems set on the Starfleet Academy story, he's going to be stuck casting these "Dawson's Creek"/ WB level emo actors to fill the roles.
It's a real problem finding young actors who can carry the mail and do the characters justice. I've seen this Quinto kid in a couple of things; and I could never wait for him to get off the screen. If that is the level of actor populating the cast of this film; it's going to end up looking like a senior class production by the kids from '90210.'
So to answer your question, if they can't find a better 'Spock' than Quinto, it doesn't bode well for casting the rest of the roles. I'd start thinking about a re-write or maybe even scrapping the entire project. -
i agree with many of your points, i too would rather see a different era in trek lore (perhaps a trilogy about the earth/romulam war. since enterprise season 5 was gonna deal with that anyways) but i've sort of warmed up to having a young kirk, bones and spock story, but as long as it fits in with continuity and doesn't alter stuff i'm ok with it. As for quinto, i like him and he's always been my choice for spock, and i don't see him as a teen actor... of course my opinion of the flim could all change when they make other casting announcments, but for now my mind is very open to this film
-
The dude can act. If you don't think so, go and watch "Junebug," because he great in that. Also, he'd be the right age JJ is looking for (mid to late twenties) in that he's like 28. So him or Ryan Gosling. Just for the love of GOD, not Chris Evans!
-
...the casting of Kirk. It could still save things. I'm still not optimistic about Quinto. If they don't get a great couple of actors to play Kirk and McCoy, things will not come out too well.
-
nice casting

I think this offering from TokyoPop's been around for a while, now, but, I paged through it once at l'bookstore and, you know, a treatment with the actual, original "Star Trek" characters CAN be OK. Everyone from Uhura to Scotty, everyboty was there, facing hyperbolic-not limited to-humanoid-shape forms.
Yes, Manga, but, a real decent treatment. Yes, th' magic o'cadoons (Manga-style) true makes the Enterprise in the REAL boldly goes where camera cannot, you know?!?!? Heh. I was impressed. -
This movie is not going to be faithful to the ST canon.
I hope they lose their color-coded crew shirts on this enterprise.
Doom to all movies that are not made the way I want them made.
-
I think he definitely looks the part and hopefully he can play the part too.
Nimoy's raving about the script is a good sign and hopefully this will indicate a revival of Star Trek. *crosses fingers*
