TREK!! WEEDS!! ISIS!! GIANTS!! TRIFFIDS!! LOONEY!! SUPERPOWERS!! @QU@M@N!! HercVault!!

Published at:  Jul 25, 2007 3:40:08 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Weeds” is my favorite show on Showtime and my favorite live-action sitcom that's not on NBC.

It tells the tale of thirtysomething suburbanite and mother Nancy Botwin (Mary Louise Parker). After her husband gets killed without a paid-up life insurance policy, Nancy maintains her upper-middle-class lifestyle in Agrestic, Calif., by selling doob to all her marijuana-loving neighbors.

As with the first season, season two of this Showtime series , which streets today, indulges no exciting "Angels In America"-like Mary Louise nudity for us to enjoy. Still and all, Parker is never less than adorable, surely one of the milfiest MILFs in the history of filmed entertainment.

“Weeds” creators finally acknowledge Parker’s supreme milfocity in the show’s second season, when no less a pot icon than Snoop Dogg christens Nancy’s new brand of dope “milfweed.”

Season two was great for other reasons. I love protagonist Nancy Botwin’s grace under pressure, and how that grace has to evaporate as she falls into bed with an open-minded DEA agent and onto the radar of her violent Armenian competitors.

I love Nancy’s horny, cowardly slacker brother-in-law Andy (stage vet Justin Kirk). I love Andy’s frank and solid mentoring of Shane “Strange” Botwin, Nancy’s preteen son. I loved the arrival of big-deal movie actress Zooey Deschanel (“Elf,” “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “The Happening”) as Kat, Andy’s sexy nutcase fugitive ex-girlfriend. I loved everything that happened with Shane and Kat and Andy.

I also love self-absorbed busybody/cancer survivor Celia Hodes (Elizabeth Perkins) and pothead accountant Doug Wilson (Kevin Nealon). Their storylines become firmly intertwined in season two when the widely feared Celia decides to run for popular Doug’s city council seat.

The new set is available in both standard-def DVD and Blu-ray.

To anticipate the question, the third season of “Weeds” launches on Showtime Aug. 13.

For those unfamiliar, “Giants” ran on ABC from 1968 to 1970. It was set during 1983, when spaceships ferried people from New York to London. One of these spaceships flew through a strange cloud and crashed on a planet where everything, including the girls, were of Brobdingnagian proportions.

The English-speaking part of the giant planet the Earthers crash into is ruled by a Nazi-ish capitalist dictatorship which has set up a Special Investigations Department (SID) to deal with dissidents and little people (the series’ protagonists, it turns out, are not the first Earth people to have crashed there).

In the second episode we learn at least some on the planet of giants (we never do learn its name) somehow know of Earth. We also come to learn that the giants have cloning and forcefields, but not the space flight that would allow the giants to conquer Earth. As a result, the Giants really want to get their hands on that Earth spaceship to see how it works.

Star Trek: Captain's Log has one episode that appeared on a previous fan collection, Harlan Ellison’s amazing “City on the Edge Of Forever,” but it comes with a new 13-minute introduction by William Shatner and Joan Collins, so it’s hard to begrudge.

The $29.19 set streeting today contains at least three episodes from each of the five “Star Trek” TV series. Two from each series were episodes that prevailed in a fan vote, and the third was chosen by that series’ lead actor.

New interviews and introductions with Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula are included. Somebody posted a breakdown of the extra material on Amazon.com:

The superheroine Isis is now part of the DC comic-book universe, and played a huge role as Black Adam’s girlfriend in DC’s recently concluded “52” title, but she was originally introduced in “Isis,” the distaff half of the CBS’s live-action Saturday morning “Shazam!/Isis” hour.

The new “The Secret of Isis: The Complete Series,” hitting shelves today, collects all 22 episodes shot between 1975 and 1977: the 15 half-hours created for the “Shazam!/Isis” hour, and the seven half-hours produced for its stand-alone spinoff “The Secret of Isis.”

Isis in the 1970s was secretly a hot American science teacher named Andrea Thomas who found a magical amulet that once belonged to Hatshepsut, an ancient Egyptian Queen. When Andrea spoke the magic words “Oh Mighty Isis,” she became Isis, and could do pretty much everything her pal Captain Marvel could: fly, run really fast and lift heavy things.

Isis was integrated into the DC universe via her crossover appearances in the “Shazam!” half-hour and via DC’s “Shazam!” and “Isis” comic-book series of the late 1970s.

An animated version of Isis was a component of 1980’s “Freedom Force,” itself a component of CBS’ then-ongoing “Tarzan and the Super 7” series.

In 2006, the DC funnybooks introduced a new post-Crisis Isis who begins life as Adrianna Tomaz, a hot and helpful slave from Egpyt who is given Hatshepsut’s amulet by Captain Marvel’s old frienemy Black Adam. In the comic we learn Hatshepsut, like Marvel and Adam, was a champion of the ancient wizard Shazam. Cool.

IFC’s Dinner For Five , not to be confused with the exciting Neve Campbell/Matthew Fox family drama, is the best talk show ever, and one every filmmaker or aspiring filmmaker must and will enjoy. All 49 episodes for $42 is one premium deal.

“Elf”/“Iron Man” director Jon Favreau chats up (usually) four drunken filmmaker friends in a pricey Los Angeles restaurant, then cuts out all the small talk in the editing room. It’s IFC, so no “fuck” is bleeped.

    MIGHTY cheesy, yet attractive, ISIS!

    by tylermo

I won't lie. I'm going to buy ISIS today. I have already purchased Filmation's Star Trek Animated, Jason of Star Command, and Space Academy, and despite the cheesy content of the programs, these sets deliver better features, etc than most mainstream, respected series. Let's face it, I was 5-10 during what I call the Filmation heyday. I suppose He-man came a few years after that, but either way, I was young enough to enjoy them. Most of these programs were no Battlestar Galactica. Hell, they weren't even Buck Rogers level, but I loved watching them as much as Looney Tunes, Lone Ranger-Zorro Adventure Hour, Superfriends, etc. I'm not going to buy every Filmation series, but I still plan to also purchase the ISIS Freedom Force animated, Flash Gordon animated, Ark II, and Blackstar. Don't let these cheesy gems go out of print before you buy your copy. They'll be a lot more expensive on Ebay when the 100 people around the world(who didn't buy them now) want them after they're out of print. You just can't go wrong with these, unless you hated them to begin with. Acting, script, and stories are largely bad. Special effects in Jason and Space Academy are surprisingly good. At least the ship and space effects. Enjoy!

    SCTV Dollar General price alert!

    by tylermo

Folks, I wouldn't have believed it, if an acquaintance hadn't told me that the SNL-esque series SCTV was selling for as low as $10.00 per season. And, of all places featuring these drastically-reduced discs...Dollar General! Sure enough, I went to the two locations in my town. Each store had the 2 copies each of the four boxed sets for $10.00. I was too young to see much of SCTV back in the day, except on rare occasion. And, just like SNL, some of the sketches are hot, some are not. But, for a fan of Candy, Levy, Moranis, Short, etc...you can't go wrong. If you have a Dollar General store, you'd better seek these out before they're gone. Don't ask why(DG has them), JUST BUY! It's been two or three weeks since I bought mine, hopefully they still have them.

On the topic of Enterprise and Voyager

    by tylermo

I'd be the first to say that Berman and Braga made a lot of mistakes with Trek in the later years. Even the best of the TNG movies were never really great, and Voyager and Enterprise had problems aplenty, despite a few good moments. Voyager...where do I start? Some of the crew was good. Tuvok, the Doctor, and maybe Paris. Some of the others were so-so, or completely useless. The premise of the show was good, but there should have been more(new Battlestar-type)angst, and less getting along, between the Starfleet crew and the Maquis crew. That would have improved the show a great deal. And, I'm sorry, but Janeway was a liberally-written pansy. Had nothing to do with her being a woman. There were occasional standout episodes, but the series may have been the worst or 2nd worst ST program. As for Enterprise, going back to the past timeline and adding things that never happened was the first mistake. I thought Archer was pretty good, and Tucker was great. T'Pol(obvious looks and body aside) was okay. Hoshi and Mayfair were given little to do, except for a few episodes. There were times when I think they got less screen time than Uhura and Chekov in the old show. Malcom and the Doctor were alright, I guess. Truth be told, my viewing of Enterprise was sporadic during seasons 1 and 2. I would record them on RPG night, forget to label the tape, and end up not watching some of them. Can't comment on all those ep's, except to say that season's 3 and 4 were a vast improvement. The addition of Manny Coto behind the scenes, and Pocket Star Trek book writing veterans, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens was gold. Admittedly, they went back to the time travel well, but when you combine Enterprise and shuttles being attacked in Earth's atmosphere by the Luftwaffe, and some Nazis...I'm there. There was an ep that went back to 2004 which was dreadful because they tried to recreate comedic moments from ST:IV handbook. ANd, for me, that movie was never Wrath of Khan, and hasn't aged as well in the later years. That said, some of the Romulan storyline, and the two-part Mirror Universe story were great. Apart from the CGI dino-gorn. :-( Hoshi was even given much to do. The Peter Weller two-part Mars and Moon excursion was fantastic. ANd, then Berman and Braga laid that series finale turd with Riker and Troi on us. It's not the fault of the actors. You can't blame Frakes and Sirtis for taking the paycheck. If you ever plan on watching season 4, stop watching after the 2nd to the last episode. Do yourself a favor. Sorry about the overly long Trek rant from a guy who mainly loves the ST orginal, most original movies, TNG, and DS9.

I think you're right about the packaging

    by tylermo

She may have better legs, but politcally, she's cracked. A woman once called a local New York tv station to complain about a reporterette who was wearing what appeared to be a genuine fur coat, during coverage of a blizzard. The woman was outraged that the reporter would dare wear this on tv. The employee was questioned in the field about the coat. Turns out it was fake fur. The irrate caller could put her mind at rest. That caller was Mary Tyler Moore. Talk about not keeping things in perspective. People city-wide were being adversly affected by the weather, and all she could worry about was a damned (fake)fur coat. Glad to know she could sleep peacefully at night. *whew* that was a close one. PETA was probably one step from being mobilized! BTW, I had the pleasure of doing a radio phoner interview with Robert Guillaume about his biography. What a nice guy.

It would be interesting to see what Lex's father was doing in jolly old England.

    TRIFFIDS!!! Where?!?!

    by nazismasher

Why mention Triffids? I must be getting blinder than I already am because I browsed through the page twice without seeing anything about "Day of the Triffids". I almost hoped the BBC mini-series from the 80's had been rescued from the vault.

    by rameses

was total knob.Instead of being a vengeful spirit ,meeting out justice to those who killed him and his fiance. He went round in broad daylight , sans the harlequin make-up, got a job to support himself and ended up in court for beating up Top Dollar!!{wtf!!!!}He didn't even have a fucking crow with him most the time

"Triffids" is listed under the November 6 arrivals. Based on the Amazon link and IMDB listings, it looks like it is the 1981 miniseries.
