Elwood Dowd and the London screening of NOTTINGHILL

Published at:  Mar 30, 1999 2:07:38 AM CST

I tend to be quite fond of romantic comedies like this one, so I'm looking forward to it. I've been hearing strong word of mouth on this film for quite some time, but hell... enough of me... read on...

Notting Hill Screening in London last night...

Packed house and an excellent response.

The film is to be released here on May 21 for a platform release, going wide
the following week at the same time as its US release. Understandably,
'film', 'release' and 'May' were not words I expected to hear together again
this year but someone's got to fill those screens I suppose.

The film itself is fantastic - the most laugh out loud, feel good movie I
have seen in a long time.

It is beautifully shot and superbly acted. Julia Roberts has taken a brave
role playing 'the most famous actress in the world' alongside a cast of
excellent supporting actors (The content of the bitchy reviews writes
itself...). The writing and comic timing is as perfect as you'd expect from
Richard Curtis. If reviewers are going to bitch about this one then they
should perhaps take another look at how everyone else in the theatre
reacted.

It's the quickest two hours I have ever passed in a cinema and it will
easily fill the lag we have in the UK before Lucasfilm lets fly.

This is not a sequel. It carries similar themes and Hugh Grant is back
where he belongs and he fits so well there. Oh, and he has an amusing
clique of friends again. But 'Four Weddings' this is not.

I can't rave about this one enough - it will be a pleasure paying to see
this again. So, if any one fancies something different yet totally
enjoyable in between your sixth and seventh viewings of that other one then
this is it. I hope it rides on the box office wave of the month because it
certainly deserves to.

    Preview sucks??

    by thebigham

I saw the preview for this movie and I thought that the preview did not do the movie justice. The movie is supposed to be very funny but the preview made the movie look too dramatic and depressing. What do others think?

    Preview / Trailer

I haven't seen any trailers for the film yet. I can't see how they managed to make it look depressing or dramatic. It flows nicely and is light-hearted, always upbeat with frequent, intensely funny moments. There are no melodramatic lows to make the warm parts fuzzier than they need to be. It's nicely played and is a very intimate love story between 'a girl and a boy'. I'm not sure how they're pitching this in the states but hey I guess these things can happen when majors find themselves having to market a small budget film they had no part in the production of.

PS Sorry if this has been vague, but I have a thing about spoilers!

    Notting Hill

Just for the record, I've been looking forward to the arrival of this film ever since I heard it was being made. I think this is the kind of movie Hugh Grant should be making all the time. He has the the most romantic qualities of any leading man in movies today, & if he were as smart as everyone says he is, he would've made a TON of "Four Weddings"-type movies by now.

    Notting Hill

I was at the Notting Hill premiere yesterday and, while Elwood Dowd is right to say it's a funny film, it's also going to rub some people up badly precisely because it's so desperate not to offend anyone and so anxious to please the Americans. There's a lot that's sweet about it, but what annoys me is Hugh taking his blithering, stammering fop thing to a profoundly irritating extreme, and the movie's totally uncritical, starry-eyed treatment of celebrity.

    Grant IS a FOP...

    by dennis

The schtick was cute in Four Weddings, but once I realized that was the only note he could hit, I got kind of bored with him. This movie will be chock full of stammering, eye fluttering, Hugh Grant foppishness. I will pass, thanks.

STARWR is not gonna have that much overflow

    by juvenal

This movie's hopes of capitalizing off of the folks who couldn't find a seat for starwars are sorely mistaken. There are already to many movies making that play. American Pie which looks absolutely hilarious is one. And the chance of riding in the ten million area for several weeks is not likely with Austin Powers opening in june.

Why can't you write more responses like that? In that talkback, you managed to write something actually funny, that didn't treat anyone like shit, and entertain us...it was only until after reading it that I realized that it had only very little to do with the movie at hand. You reminded me of Harry. Congrats. -Loki
