Irritating Remake-Of-The-Day #2: REBOOT Gets...Ummm...Rebooted?! And You Can Help Shape It?!
Merrick again...
You folks remember REBOOT? It's kinda like TRON but without the TRONiness. It's all CGI, with shitty voice work, and no Bridges, Boxleitner, Warner, Morgan, Hughes, light cycles, or Peter Jurasik from BABYLON 5.
It was a CGI series from the mid-1990s...
...and it's being remade as a movie or three. Interesting that there's no reference to theatrical release...only "feature length". I'm smelling Straight-to-DVD.
One intriguing element of this revival is how they're going about approaching the source material:
"The idea is to relaunch the brand in a new way," said Rainmaker Animation executive vp Paul Gertz, who will oversee the project.
To do this, Rainmaker has entered into a strategic alliance with Zeros 2 Heroes, a Web site set to launch today(7/23) to provide a social network for comic book fans.
Essentially, five undiscovered writers identified by Rainmaker were selected to work with the animation studio's production teams to prepare a pitch for the new "ReBoot" story line. These will be posted on the Zeros 2 Heroes site Thursday, the opening day of San Diego Comic-Con International. Those who visit the site will be able to work with each production team to help refine the ideas for "ReBoot" and later vote and select a favorite pitch. The brainstorming environment is what the site calls "Think Ups."
...says THIS ARTICLE!
By the way, HERE is a link to the website mentioned above.
This kind of interactivity could be kind of fun for those who followed the show; although (and as always) I'd prefer we move forward...towards fresh material...instead of constantly looking back.
It's inconceivable to me (and statistically improbable) that promising, NEW material isn't out there waiting for love from The Powers That Be.

i liked that show.
-
Warwick Davis will do this for free.
-
...was terrible.
-
Why the hell can we a get a CGI remake of THE INHUMANIODS! That would rock! Get Josh Harnett to all the voices. He is so dynamic and electric.
-
I used to watch this show alot as a kid on YTV here in Canada. What channel did they show this in the states? It was animated by Mainframe, the same company that animated that Transformers spinoff show called Beast Wars/Beasties (depending on what country you were in). Mainframe has then recently been bought over by Rainmaker. I would like to work for Mainframe...more for their history I guess, although their animation is not that much to be proud of....

You know we agree sometimes but damn it. Reboot was a fun fucking show. Yeah the production values were poor even by Saturday morning tv standards but it actully had a competent writing staff and staff of directors. Mainframe the original production studio went on to do the terrific transformers: Beast wars series. Reboot's only shortfall was that it went un concluded due to several key members of the production studio leaving for other things.
-
Yeah, I liked the show as well. It was pretty good for it's time. I mean, wasn't it one of the first CG animated cartoons around during that time? Anyway, I don't think this should be made into a film though. It should be left as what it was.
-
It was... Quote from Wikipedia... "It was credited with being the first full length, completely computer animated TV series. When the series debuted in 1994, the first computer-animated feature film, Toy Story, had not yet been released. "
-
the movies come out? <p>personally, I'm looking forward to the remakes of 1-18-08 and The Golden Compass.
-
This was a fun show. It started to go a little haywire towards the end, but it was still watchable.
-
I kept asking people if they remebered Reboot! and now its being rebooted!! what a strange cowinkydink.....I remeber this show kind of freaked me out cos the good guy (Bob) like got turned into this little grey sludgy thing by Megabyte at the end of one season and he didnt get changed back...first time I saw a cartoon pretty much give its hero a fate worse than death. Apparently he got changed back a season or two later but they stopped showing it over here before that happened so I was left a devastated child....
-
remake good shows like BJ and the Bear? There's a concept I can never get enough of ... a man and his monkey
-
I hate being reminded how old I'm getting.
-
"...oh-you don't have that function..." ;-) I always wanted one of those things on his arm as a kid... ;-)
-
Forget a freakin' reboot. The fourth season ended on such a huge cliffhanger.... Give us a true season five, damn it!
-
Do you guys remember when Bob and Megabyte had a guitar playing battle? That was pretty sweet.
-
Wait, are you saying that comic book fans are somehow lacking in social networking skills? That makes me so angry, I might have to slap you with my rolled up stained copy of JLU Hawkgirl ! Ah, forget it, I'll be in the basement.
-
I'd rather see them finish the cliffhanger like they were supposed to. Give us Season 5, dammit!! (And you be some kind of crazy person - the show was great and Tony Jay will always be Megabyte, dammit)
-
I am one of them i watched this when it was first shown an i loved it, However there is no fan base that i know of now even if there is a comic its not big. I am predicting a flop unless there is a TV serise released to get some core audience first.
-
They did a great Resident Evil/Evil Dead episode. A must to watch.
-
what next? I remember Baron Karzaa from the Micronaughts looking mean and his magnetic limbed action figure was one of my favourties as a kid but I remember little if anything about the concept of The Micronaughts. Anybody have fond memories, was it any good? can we expect a reboot / remake/ re..re..re...reflex!
-
When we gonna get a Grotbags movie or a film version of Rod,Jayne and Freddy?... actually Do an animated Danger Mouse flick and I'm there!
-
ACTUALLY.. considering how outdated Reboot would be done now as far as its references to computers.. it would need an overhaul. The entire concept of the series is that it takes place inside a computer and that all the parts are characters... Much of the concepts used inthe original series don't quite work anymore with how much the technology has changed. A reboot of ReBoot might be quite interesting if you think of it more as a spin off series...
-
I totally agree. I loathe the use of the word "brand". You know the show has been co-opted by corporate pin heads when you start hearing that. It is nice to see the show getting some attention again. I always liked it and how they had a special take on all the computer lingo. I loved Hexidecimal she was a total nut-job. The best rendition of Chaotic Neutral I ever saw. Hey! When are we getting that Reading Rainbow full-length feature film. Geordi's gotta eat ya know.
-
I refuse to even spell your moniker correctly, you hack!
-
current (then) pop culture. It already spawned two made for TV movies. But I agree - stop looking back to remake things that there was nothing wrong with to begin with.
-
or that werewolf movie where the werewolf is driving a car.
-
iv'e only seen troll 2 once and never finished it.
-
When Enzo grew up and became a complete badass and his girlfriend turned smokin hot. Kinda wish they would just play on the original series with the same characters. Just make a new baddie to fight against. And then of course upgrade the quality and effects. I didn't think the voice acting was bad at all actually. I just didn't care for the kiddie storylines. I liked it better when it started to grow up. However they did a awesome job on the movie references like X-Files and Evil Dead. So I can't say much bad about the writers.
-
This series was awesome, especially when they re-configured it after a while with better character animation, graphics and storylines. I remember it went from being a repetitive series, to being an epic (for what it was) serialised story. I for one think this is a great idea!
-
I don't know how far you got, but season 4(the two movies) ended on a clifhanger. Megabyte(w/ trojan upgrades) managed to take over, Bob and Matrix were the only ones left. At least there is some hope of them listening to the fans. Too bad some ass is gonna try to swing the vote just to see their fave fanfic come to life...
-
maybe Silverhawks and BraveStar?! Oh wait...How bout that Dungeons and Dragons cartoon? That could be a good remake right? Danger Mouse? Count Duckula? Heathcliff? These are gold franchises just waiting to be remade man!
-
I am glad that I missed that show..."to mend and defend, to defend my new found friends, to defend my friends from their enemy" I was clawing at the mouse, and could taste bile.
-
This TV show was groundbreaking for it's time. Think about the piece of shit computers they had to work with back then. Pre Windows 95, rendering time must have taken forever, these guy's were well ahead of their game. I was studying computer animation in college when this show started and everyone in the class used to tune in each week. I'm sure this show was of great inspiration to lots of up and coming animators. If they want to reboot it, great... but give it the original the respect it deserves.
-
I actually DO remember seeing that blue guy here and there, but I never even thought twice about it. To me, it always looked like a shoddy version of that old "let's get rocked" video by def leppard. Watch it here, you'll see what I am talking about: http://tinyurl.com/25xlqk
-
Especially compared to what some people call animation today. For those who missed season 3, give this a watch. http://tinyurl.com/2lkdld A rather funny recap. If your dissing this show and like animation in any manner, you haven't seen it.
-
I don't know for sure, but I'm gonna find out. <p><p> REBOOT!<p><p> I never finished watching this series, but I definitely remember it. Need to check out Enzo's hot girlfriend.... animated hotness ftw?
-
They HAVE to continue the series- a re-imaging is ok, but I really what to see what comes next! This is such a coincidence because I was just at Otakon and saw the reboot artbook for sale! Check out the reboot wiki at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReBoot and the artbook at rebootart.com
-
CGI has reached a point (now) that a live action version, by a studio like Warner Bros., could give this material the swift kick in the pants to be something that it REALLY CAN BE. I won't hold my breath... but the material is worthy of a huge studio production. I feel. It could be one of the big summer blockbusters. It's even got Michael Bay written all over it. (heh, heh)
-
voices on the "X-Files" episode?
-
And it only got wittier and better written as it went on. Plus - shitty voice work? That moisture you feel is Tony FUCKING Jay spitting on you from Heaven. Me, though - I'm kinda hoping for a BIG GUY AND RUSTY adaptation, if anything.
-
We already have a social network for comic fans. It's called ComicSpace. BTW Reboot rocked. Comparing it to Tron is inane.
-
That's why they made fun of his character so much.
-
Mainframe was or is an animation house from Canada that specialized in 3d animated, half hour shows. They did Transformers Beast Machines and Beast Wars. they did Battle Planets and ReBoot. I worked at a stop-motion studio, at the time, that specialized in old skool, 3d and 2d animation. Most of the guys would laugh at Mainframe's work, but I think it was the haunting laugh of our industry's death. Mainframe's work may be dated, but the stories and character interaction was much more sophisticated that most mid 90's trash. It wasn't Batman Animated (what was?), and it wasn't Gargoyles, but it was an extremely creative and well written show and the voice acting was very, very good. I'm thinking you are just one of those folks who sees something different, not quite the usual spoonful of eyecandy you are used to being fed and you make assumptions. At least here, you're senses have wronged you. This show could very well, in the right hands, make a fun feature. Why don't you complain about the really poor contemporaries of ReBoot, like X-Men or all the Spider-Man cartoons from the 90's? Marvel still cannot make a decent animated series. Look at Johnny Storm's hairdo!! Or do you think it's stylish?
-
I have no idea what movie has a werewolf driving a car but i'm in. You guys have me on a late 80's early to 90's cartoon flashback. Anyone else remember Skeleton Warriors? It came on my CBS affliate very early on saturday mornings in the mid 90's.
-
Tim Curry! Think about it! Nobody can replace Tony Jay though....his voice was so unique, so creepy...
-
Perhaps that's the question to ask yourself. --And yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. This should be entirely computer animated. And it should kick out collective butts.
-
While we're at it.
-
This place is the best. It's a strange, topically tangential linkage of the curious, the furious and the impotent. It's like you're talking to someone at a party and you think you're having a great conversation... then you realize the other person is just nodding at you while an ever expanding circle of pee floods out from between their toes and over their flip flops.
-
aah, real monsters never left! Its repeated like every day at least....
-
I don't remember the show but the toys were bad ass! As far as ReBoot, I remember the show but I never watched it regularly so I can go either way on this one.
-
...I'd seriously love to see more Captain Planet. CAAAPTAAIN PLANNNNNEEET! With Ben Assfleck, preferably. It would be hilarious to watch him lose his "powers" and fall down every 5 minutes after being hit by a droplet of urine or sniffing a passing car.
-
When it was a 'new' show, and was supposed to be 'cool' 'cause it was all CGI...<br><br>I remember not liking it, and watching that other show on CBS, WILDCATS, it was based on, I think, a Valiant comic. <br><br>Sometimes, I worry that todays youths are going to grow up to be major pussies, what with all the lack of machismo filled cartoons like G.I. Joe, He-Man, Ninja Turltes, etc.

the problem as far as I can see with modern cartoons...
by RockLobster800
for kids seems to be that they never get in danger anymore. I dont watch them as much as I used too but Ive noticed a drop in quality HOWEVER as well as that the heroes never seem to run into that much trouble...I remember even watching the Bruce Timm Batman series and shitting myself cos half the time it really looked like Batman was fucked-like the clayface episode where clayface consumes him. we just keep seeing Batman poking limbs out while Clayface casually pushes him further in. and as I said with Reboot-they turned Bob into a worm thing for over a season! I have yet to see that on modern kids tv....you dont even get morally dubious characters like Top Cat who was essentially an all round loveable complete bastard!
-
...and this guy is an exectutive vp??? Do these people have play-do for a brain?? "What if we didn't just relauch this, but relaunch it......in a NEW way!" Might as well put a gerbil in the White House. Wait a minute.....
-
Reboot pushed the bounds of what was capable with computer animation. It was the first CGI series, and they were the ones who proved it was possible. Sure there haven't been many great CGI shows, but a lot of hard work went into what they did, and they did quality. They're also responsible for Roughnecks and the MTV spiderman series. Very entertaining stuff. So why don't you ease up off of Reboot, dick.
-
The cat from that live Garfield movie (I think there may have been more than one movie, actually?) could play Top Cat! Right? Right...?
-
I can't believe so many people remember it AND from America. It used to come on CITV here in the UK. Loved that show, missed Bob and hated the lack of S5.<P>Haha Captain Planet, that show was hilarious. "Captain Planet he's a hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!!" Since Climate Change is a hot topic I can really see a "reimagining" of that series coming soon.
-
dont say shit like that man....some hack producer could read that and go "thats a fucking great idea!" and ship it into production...only he'll go all chipmunks and turn TC nd the gang into a bunch of hoodlums in Harlem....
-
I like it!!!
-
You couldn't have watched the show and make comments like that. ReBoot was way ahead of its time, the third season saga was brilliant.
-
anything that comes out of Vancouver is sweet-ass... even if it's cheesy
-
They only broadcast the first two seasons down here. It was on ABC IIRC. A pity I wasn't selected as a writer. I'd be going for a hard R. Dot Matrix is just begging to do full frontal.
-
and all the other crappy cg shows of the 90's.
-
Unfortunately, I never had a chance to see the 2 movies they had. All I can go on is the last episode of the actual series. Maybe they'll have it somewhere on YouTube. If there was more to it, then I need to see it.
-
That's because it looked a bit awkward and new. CG had not yet found it's way. Those of us who like good writing got over that. I think it is understood that some folks can be entertained watching matchbox cars crash or counting fleas on a donkey's scrotum. Some folks like good character development and creative scripts. To each their own I guess.
-
For real dog,for real. Anyways Skeleton Fucking Warriors man, that shit was dark and kind of scared me a as a kid. I guess after the Pirates series the idea of skeletons fighting humans may never happen again, not unless we get the Evil Dead series back.
-
At the time, there really wasn't anything good on tv for kids. This show was also one of the first to go the Saturday morning 3-d route. I admit, it was a little corny at the beginning of the series, but it's always had a good premise and it actually got really cool near the end.
-
There is still a Reboot 3-D simulator ride at Luxor in Las Vegas.
-
To think up possible plots? And they're not gonna pay us for our efforts? They want us to visit the site, they better offer us something better -like money, otherwise they can go chew scrotum
-
It's because it matches the colour of Hexadecimal's... (siren)WARNING! INCOMING GAME! AND IT'S ON BLU-RAY! REBOOT!!!
-
I loved ReBoot...especially the darker 3rd season + "4th season". Even the lighter 1st and 2nd season used to make some really clever jabs at network censors and even ABC itself (Sir, The ABCs have turned against us!...TRAITOROUS DOGS!!!). Plus the 3rd season had the ultra classic Evil Dead 2 episode, where they get trapped in a Doom-style game that has Ash (And yes, it is Ash...down to the sawed off shotgun and chainsaw hand) trying to get the Necronomicon from the shack. All he says during the whole episode is "groovy!"...until they toss him into the fruit cellar and he gets killed by a deadite (I'm dead before dawn!), ending the game. That was single handedly the finest hommage ever paid to Evil Dead in the history of broadcast television. The 3rd season had lots of other great "geek friendly" moments, like their nod to The Last Starfighter (Gun...Death Blossom mode!). They also frequently killed characters in the show, sometimes in implied gory ways (Hell, it is implied Enzo has his head/spine ripped out when he loses the Mortal Kombat game). The only thing that will suck about new ReBoots is Tony Jaa is dead...you really can't replace a voice talent like that.
-
I remember watching ReBoot and Beast Wars/Machines back-to-back every wednesday up here in Canada. It was a great night of TV, especially when the great 3rd season aired. It defined the show, and anyone who says the show is crappy NEEDS to see this season. I will agree the first 2 seasons were very kiddish, but the 3rd season had a great running storyline. I hope that the new writers dont go back to the old formula of the first 2 seasons, and bring back our old favorite characters.
-
...if there is anything left over ...give it to Frisket.
-
sure, why not bring it back when the voice of the best character is no longer available. That's like stopping Star Wars after Empire Strikes Back and not making anymore until James Earl Jones is dead (or intretrospect making prequels and then barely featuring Jones's voice). Just stupid. The show didn't have shitty voice work, bitch, it was a very well done series from start to finish--until they made those last two movies that left the series on a cliffhanger. Season 3 was a better ending point.
-
...text messages on T-shirts, worn by prepubescent furries. What's not to love?

I love how people on this site start their articles by insulting something, then whining about how "They" are compromising its integrity with whatever continuation/remake someone is doing. Presumptuous fucks.
-
Who the fuck are YOU anyways?
-
have we stooped this low already? someone lost a fucking bet if theyre trying to get a "reboot" movie off the ground. either that or they were brainstorming on mescaline. as a sidenote, Honey I Shrunk The Kids is EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD. EIGHTEEN!
-
fuck it, i take it all back, this film is going to be amazing. I COME FROM THE MAINFRAME! reboot is like old people trying to explain the internet to eachother. SO YOU INPUT THE ER, YOU INPUT A GAME, ON THE INTERNET, AND THEN YOUR IP COMES OUT OF THE PRINTER, AND THEN THERES A DRAGON
-
I dunno I thought the VO work was quite good compared to other saturday morning fare. But I can't wait to see how a reboot of REBOOT turns out. Now what SERIOUSLY needs to get made is Captain Powers and the Soldiers of the Future. That was pretty damn dark for a kids show and should be remade for the older set definitely minus the interactive toys. Anyone remember that show? The one where you can use your toys and shoot at the screen and the screen shoots back? Show of hands, how many folks had their toys broken by parents because you were makin too much noise at 6 am??? Hope its not just me lol

INDEED! ""FOLKS.""-Jason and Randy Sklar

Why is Atomic Knights continually blown off? Yea it was a comic and never made sat morn tv. <p> But they rode FUCKING GIANT DOGS! Giant WHIPPETS for christsake, sorry Holly Hunter's cow. <p> Now that is one hell of a movie.

Oh god, lookee here <p>http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.conelrad.com/books/images/atomicknights_la_cvr_400.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.conelrad.com/books/flyleaf.php%3Fid%3D230_0_1_0_M&h=569&w=400&sz=151&hl=en&start=4&um=1&tbnid=JR4E7B4X5dHZNM:&tbnh=134&tbnw=94&prev=/images%3Fq%3Datomic%2BKnights%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN <p> Little settlement of Durvale cut off AFTER the Atomic war. Tiny isolated bands of humans ( Does that mean people shrunk and the dogs were normal sized?)
-
The way it is worded it looks like these could be movies continuing the story of the last two tv movies (which some call season 4). Also, yea, Reboot was revolutionary for it's time and much of the animation in season 3 and the last 2 tv movies still hold up well today by TV standards.
-
and Captain Power was awesome! I'm still a little bit scared of being digitized.

degikrinbakedirfuvkeit, REBOOT was shown on ABC ...
by Spykid the 13th
Well, sort of. REBOOT was butchered, bastardized, cut, edited, slashed, chopped and censored nonstop by ABC, who eventually pulled the plug for a number of reasons including content. You can read all about it on wikipedia, or fansites of the show. ABC basically rode the creators constantly to tone it down, tone it down, tone it down. They were told to change just about everything nonstop. Eventually, the deal between them and ABC just broke down because of all this and a number of other more "real-world" factors. Still, REBOOT serves as a powerful reminder to me about how dangerous censorship can be, when something this benign is given a constant coal-raking by people who know better but nevertheless give in to the lowest common denominator. An example: in one episode, Enzo is going to get a kiss on the CHEEK from his older sister, Dot, but ABC balked because of fears it might be interpreted as a moment of incest. Yes, really.
-
some quotes from imdb boards...<BR> <BR>"That security guard was played by the director of the movie. It's even funnier when he's driving the car and suddenly we see that he's already transformed into a werewolf - and yet he's still driving the car. and then he rolls his eyes and Mike says, "Ohhhh, this traffic!"<BR> <BR>"First time I ever seen a lupus skull with ear bones. *laughs*"<BR> <BR>http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118137/
-
"example: in one episode, Enzo is going to get a kiss on the CHEEK from his older sister, Dot, but ABC balked because of fears it might be interpreted as a moment of incest. Yes, really. " < p > Wow. That's fucked up. So ABC thinks a kiss on the cheek from your sister = having dirty monkey incest. I guess the suits over at ABC at that time had some childhood trauma in their life, that's the only explanation. Wow. < p > I would sometimes catch this show on Saturday mornings when I was twelve. The animation was laughable, even for back then. But hey, it featured a computer world with cool villains and videogames. Furthermore, the stories themselves were quite original and innovative, way more advanced than your typical Saturday morning fare (for instance, you can sum up every single episode of 80´s Transformers in 4 words: Autobots - Decepticons - Energoncubes - FIGHT! ) < p > So this could be kind of neat, but I'm not sure 'the world' is really holding their breath for more reboot. If you weren't between ages 8 - 15 when this aired, you'll probably never even heard of this.
-
WHAT FUCKING BRAND?
-
I liked Reboot. For a kids CGI video game show, it was pretty cool. A revamp with new effects could be pretty sweet
-
You know this to be true.
-
... or at least the story continued past the one or two seasons we saw here in the USA. I remember seeing it on TV in the UK years back... it was apparently seasons that didn't run in the States... the little kid was grown and on a quest for something ot other. No Dot Matrix, which was too bad. She was hot for a badly-rendered CGI animated character.
-
I'd pay big money to see that, and I'm 100% serious.
-
ha ha cheap ass shit. and the security/werwolf driving the car is the DIRECTOR! HA HA!
-
figure it out.
-
Reboot was ok and i didn't watch that much of Bump in the Nigh... My absolute fav was the Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon and not the crappy one with the adventures title...WHO'S WITH ME?!?!? do they have it on dvd?
-
A "proper Season 5" of ReBoot will probably never see the light of day because TONY JAY, THE VOICE OF MEGABYTE, DIED LAST YEAR. Since Megabyte was such a pivitol character to the original series, and it would be impossible to satisfy all fans with whoever they replaced him with, I'm willing to bet they will just start anew. Saturday mornings on ABC (just before Disney took it over and ruined it) were indeed the best. I personally enjoyed Bump in the Night and would like to see it come out on DVD, if only for nostalgia's sake. Sonic the Hedgehog--the best Sonic series by far--is currently on DVD: http://tinyurl.com/3cnpfc (I also saw it at Wal-Mart.)
-
My kids and I really liked watching REBOOT on TV in the 90's. The stories were entertaining, and from time to time, they threw in various cultural references. Yes, Mulder and Scully did make an appearance in an episode. Plus the CGI was pretty good for its time. Unfortunately there was a long time between seasons and it was hard to find them on broadcast TV in the US. I think the SciFi channel showed the third season once. On a different note, we also enjoyed the MAX STEEL series
-
bob was banished to the web by megabyte and Enzo was made guardian of mainframe. Unfrotunatley enzo lost in a mortal kombat like game but was able to go with teh game cube by switching himself to a game sprite(his game srite girlfriend and frisket did the same). Enzo assuming he was lost in teh game world traveled from system to system via game cubes hoping to make it back to mainframe. They did this for a few years(seconds) so enzo became a badass game warrior. When they finally mad eit back to mainframe only a few nanoseconds had passed(weeks) so mainframe was still going to hell but they had only actully been gone a bit. Dot was there as well. check out seasons 3 and 4 online they are worth it. except for season 4 ending with a huge cliffhanger and season 5 never coming.
-
C'mon - Dax Shepard as Dwayne Hunter! FRANK MILLER! FUCK!
-
Man, that show was from back when Russia was still the Soviet Union. Bizarre.
-
What? It'd be TRULY OUTRAGEOUS!
