The rumor is Lionsgate has found someone to PUNISH... besides us....

Published at:  Jul 22, 2007 10:34:52 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We announced back in May that Thomas Jane was walking away from the series and since then the film has gained a director (John Dahl), then lost him and has gained a new director (Lexi Alexander) and LatinoReview now says they've also gotten a new body to put into the white skull shirt.

Ray Stevenson, "Titus Pullo" from ROME. I don't know his work, so you guys'll have to tell me if he's a good choice. He doesn't exactly look the role in the pics I've seen of him, but then again neither did Thomas Jane and he ended up doing a good job in a mediocre-to-crappy movie.

I hope the flick ends up halfway decent. I really dug Alexander's HOOLIGANS and I think she's an interesting match with this material. Jigsaw could be a fun villain... there's hope, at least.

See, I might actually have to see this movie now...which is sad, because I hate The Punisher. But I love Titus Pullo, who had one of the greatest character arcs ever committed to television. Ray Stevenson has the focus, energy and likable meanness to pull off Frank Castle...but like all things it will depend on the script and direction.

    Sad State of Affairs

    by spykid the 13th

Unfortunately, this doesn't look like it will likely fix the problems with this movie even before it comes out. Thomas Jane, whom I really liked in the horrible first movie, was clearly a fan of the character and quite obviously had a handle on what sort of film he wanted them to make of it (and very obviously knew the problems with the first one most of us shared with him). When he walked away due to the direction of the script, that too became obvious, because the only thing that would have likely sent him away from the movie was more attempts to add "comedy." The thing is, I personally bet that when you ask the average person what they think of the first PUNISHER (second?), assuming they've seen it, they'll say "It kicked ass! It was funny!" And this is the element they will keep, all the weird characters all around Castle. We won't see even a little hint of the APOCALYPSE NOW character that Frank Castle truly is. Mark my words now, this will be a direct-to-video release.

Thomas Jane needs a really good movie

    by gozu

He's got the chops, but he's always gotten dog roles. "Punisher" would have put him over the top had it not been so lackluster. Hopefully "The Mist" will do it or some Steve Niles project.

    Why make a sequel?

    by jimmy_009

I mean, no one gave a shit about the Dolph Lundgren version. They didn't give a shit about the Thomas Jane one. Obviously the only people that would want to see another Punisher movie is the five thousand Punisher fans that actually think he's an interesting character. The problem with this character trying to drive a superhero franchise is that he has zero superpowers, requiring zero special effects. He doesn't wear a cool costume (at least not in the movie versions. You can see the same thing in any of the half million vengeance movies of the 80's. Face it, as a superhero he's pretty boring.

    Good Choice

    by b0d

Titus Pullo had a lot in common with Frank. It's a step in the right direction anyway. What's the plot? If they had any sense they'd adapt The Cell, where Frank goes to prison to kill the rest of those responsible for his family's slaughter. Add a scene where he fights a hitman for the mob during the riot, then defeats him by smashing his face through 3 separate windows. Boom! Instant kickass violent action thriller + you've introduced Jigsaw + saved a few bucks setting the movie in a prison. So far this casting is the only good news I've heard on this project...

Why Comic Book Movies Are Almost Never "Hard"

    by spykid the 13th

Any time you hear about a studio getting a hold of a "tough" or "hard" character franchise, worry. The first thing that the people who make these movies do is IMMEDIATELY have an exclusionary, closed-door session with the producers where they sit around amidst piles of producer money, and the producer's first (and only) question is "What can we do to soften this to protect my investment by appealing to the widest market possible?" The usual answer is "We shift the tone - we make it 'darker' by adding a lot of chrome and leather, but we make sure nobody fires a gun." "Will thre be a lot of swears?" "Sure, as many as we can fit into PG-13." "Works for me! Those movies are gold!" "And even if it tanks, we will make a fortune on video."

See, here's the thing: let's look at the numbers. You know how you'd see where there would be these little "Statement of Ownership" tables in comics? A quick read of them shows that a comic like DAREDEVIL or THE PUNISHER has an average circulation of 30,000 copies (or, rather, did, at the time I last checked one. I'm sure it's much smaller now) per issue, allowing for the copies being returned.

Now, if I have a choice between alienating 30,000 fans but appealing to millions of moviegoers, what choice am I going to make?

    Rome Reject??

    by packymccracken

Titus Pullo was one of the most badass characters ever put on tv and Ray Stevenson was just perfect all the way through. I would have loved to see the series continue with Rome: The Adventures of Lucius and Titus (only they'd have to bring Lucius back from the dead).

At any rate, he's a great choice for the Punisher, if they really feel the need to make another film. I don't really see the point since they tend to want to water it all down. But I'm certainly more interested in what it may be with Stevenson on board.

    by picardsucks

Titus Pullo was way harder than the dumb Punisher movie (Tom Jane was good though) The problem with the movie wasn't the Punisher, it was everything else. Producer, Director, story, very lame and gay bad guy, ect. As Tom Jane is out I am very happy with the new Punisher though. Please let Frank Miller or Garth Ennis write the fucking script and no gay hollywood flourishes.

. . . and it should be OK. His script and direction were cable TV movie quality at best. At least this new director has an understanding of intensity and how violence is portrayed on screen to be impactful to the audience. I think this sequel has a chance to overshadow the original, and redefine Frank Castle at the cinema. At least, I hope so. And for the poster who earlier - he's NOT a fucking superhero dipshit. That'sthe whole point. Way to fuckin' miss it.

He was just fantastic in Rome. I like Jane, and appreciate the effort he put into trying to get The Punisher right. But Ray is a much better fit for the comic character. Older, heavier, nastier. I'm sure he'll be in shape. Hopefully he can do a good US accent and we'll be all set.

They need to say "fuck you" to Lion's Gate, do whatever they have to do to get the cinematic rights back and then place the Punisher in the stable of self produced films. by smackfu

Here's the thing though. We, as fans, have a huge sway with the studios in this age. They watch forums like hawks, because it's like a 24/7 focus group. Now that Ray Stevenson is the Punisher, the bar of expectation has been drastically raised and fans are going to expect, and demand, more from this film than a direct-to-video quality jerkoff. So if people make enough noise about it, and this actually becomes a hot story on movie sites, Lions Gate may realize they might make some real money off this if they do it right. Right = good story and enough violence to make Eli Roth squirm.

    by pipergates

Jane is fine actor, great in Stander, but much too young & cute an inoffensive-looking to play Frank Castle. This Ray Stevenson guy is a great big scary beast, big improvement. But really, if they don't go the way of Sin City/BB/300 and make it rough, bloody, and serious, there's no point making it. Punisher works as a MAX comic, as a kiddies comic its boring. Get Dolph to do a cameo...or the villain...

I'll stick with the MAX comics (haven't read a bad storyline yet and Barracuda is back for #50). Fools/Pussies. This could have been so insanely vicious. Glad Jane made a statement and walked. This could have been brutal, you know, the way the Punisher really is. Psychotic. In the Beginning would have made a fantastic tale. Make him old and cold. He was too nice in the first film. Even Dolph was more heartless.....

than Thomas Jane's. The first one had a sense of comic book style, over-the-top action with some great villains in the ninja chick and Jeroen Krabbe. dude, gotta back up quint here on Hooligans. It's not a great movie and it's far from perfect but I thought it was pretty good and fairly hard for a movie like that. It had its own sense of style and I liked Elijah Woods, who's always pretty good, and loved Charlie Hunnam, who was fuckin' badass, as was his older brother. I really dug the opening of the film too because I know kids who have been fucked out of graduating by roommates who screw them over. I don't know, it's not for everyone, and I have no idea how authentic or exaggerated it is, but it's a funny movie with some charming, out-of-character performances that deserves a wider audience than it got, not an undeserved talkback bashing. One of the worst movies ever? That's a pretty bold and inaccurate statement, my friend. As someone who sees at least 50 'horrible' movies a year, Hooligans ranks closer to one of the best than one of the worst. Top 50% for sure.

    Titus Pullo rocks.

    by doctor_gonzo

Probably the best character in the Rome series. A little more of a Lundgren type approach to use him because he's big. Kind of guy who could pick someone up by their throat and put him through a wall. Could be cool. Although Jane is not short or anything, he still seemed more like a Wolverine-type bad ass, less brute strength and more agile/smart. The brute strength approach could work though. Never been a big fan of Jane anyways.

Hooligans was decent. Visually, I definitely think it was good, so if Alexander is directing with a good writer then I'm pretty optimistic. We'll see who they get to write though.

Come'on, get Tim Story or Brett Ratner to directed, cast Mandy Moore in a gritty performance as his love interest, the whore with a heart of gold, cast Josh Harnett or Freddie Prinze Jr. as the Jigsaw, and watch it bring in $150 million.

You tools know nothing about Dolph!

    by evilwizardglick

Dolph's Punisher was better than Janes, but I wish he had been more along the lines of the I Come in Peace character.
    Bet you didn't know,
A native of Stockholm, Dolph Lundgren is a graduate of the Royal Institute of Technology. He has a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney (1982), and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 – but quit after two weeks to pursue acting [2]. He speaks five languages: Swedish, English, some German, some Japanese and some French.[citation needed]

Military service: Swedish Coastal Ranger School, conscript corporal. (Marine elite force unit "Kustjägarna") http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kustj%C3%A4gare_%28Sverige%29

Lundgren holds a 3rd Dan (3rd Degree Black Belt) in Kyokushin Karate and won the European championships in 1980 and 1981 as well as a heavyweight tournament in Australia in 1982 [3]. He was also captain of the Swedish Kyokushin Karate team, and was a formidable challenger at the 1979 World Open Tournament (arranged by the Kyokushin Karate Organization) when he was only a green belt.[citation needed]

Lundgren was selected to serve as the Team Leader of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Modern pentathlon Team during the Atlanta Games where he coordinated planning and other details between the team and the United States Olympic Committee. He is actively involved in promoting the image of the sport. "Over the past few years, my involvement with modern pentathlon has grown from pure interest to an opportunity to raise the visibility of the sport, increase recruitment of young talent and make sure that this event, originated by the founder of the Olympics, Baron de Coubertin, will remain in the Games," Lundgren has said.

Ray Stevenson will be a fucking awesome Frank Castle!

    by mr writer

Stevenson was incredible in Rome and has both the looks (big, strong, intense and hard as nails) and the acting ability (as good as if not better than Jane any day of the week) to turn even a mediocre Punisher script with a mediocre director into a better film than the original, which wouldn't be hard since the first movie ranks as one of the worst comic book adaptations of all time. A back to basics, low budget, violent sequel with Stevenson as Castle could be just what the franchise needs. Titus Pullo is The Punisher.

    by mrdinky

Quint, you haven't seen ROME? It's a very good series that belongs up there in the category with SOPRANOS and OZ.
Anyway, Stevenson is a type-cast, bit actor. Usually the silent guy in ARTHUR or the boxed/straightman supporting character. He's great in ROME though. Definitely his time to shine so far. And he still wasn't the lead (poor guy! heh). Anyway, his role in ROME does become quite similar to Frank Castle. And he is the right body for the role. Although if you watch ROME, you'll no doubt think McKidd's character is more akin to PUNISHER. That's Stevenson alright. always number 2.

    first punisher

    by mrdinky

just read through some of the talkbacks and I gotta say, I don't understand all the hate for the Jane version of PUNISHER. I'm not saying it was great. in fact, it was basically a B-movie. but to say it wasn't hard, I just don't understand. one thing the movie was not was "kiddy." I mean, when I left the theater, I didn't dislike the movie primarily because of all the violence...and fairly graphic violence at that. it was unflinching. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't squeeze it into some movie version of the "comics code" censorship system. I respected that. it's not something one normally sees in a Marvel property. PUNISHER was an interesting mainstream study on vengeance and justice and the role of that sword the goddess carries in the hand opposite the scale. iunno. I wouldn't lop it in there with ELEKTRA. That just seems wrong. I actually thought PUNISHER was much more visceral than the cgi-fantasy stuff in 300, which was just so distant. I really don't understand how people feel moved by the sight of all that obviously cgi violence. is it just the idea of a head flying through the air that does it? I guess I could understand that - although the idea alone is a weak defense for a visual work of art, but whatever.

    by lynxpro

Sure, its a solid B movie, but it kicks. The Punisher takes out villains left and right throughout the whole film. The only negatives are how Castle's family is killed and the fact that he never wore the skull logo. I'd love to see an "unrated" version - the one that was going to get an X rating for violence - of that flick on Blu-ray.

    I still think Jane walked...

    by sledge hammer

...because he was being felt out to being offered Watchmen, and he couldn't make both, so he chose (probably wisely, career wise) to go with the bigger name, budgeted and hyped project, even if it's in a smaller role. I mean when Jane walked, they didn't even have a director, let alone a completed script. And as most would be aware, whenever a new director comes onto a project the first thing that changes is usually the script, so I think that at the time he walked it was still too early to know that they next film was going to suck with any kind of certainty, because everything was still far too fluid. No, I think he was just paying lip service to the fans, because to say he walked so that he could do something else would have been seen as him abandoning the fans, whereas if he sells it that he walked over quality issues then he sounds like he was quitting for the fans. Great piece of spin, and one that seems to have worked a treat.I like Jane, I liked his take on Castle, and what roles he chooses to do or not to do are totally his choice, but just color me cynical when it comes to his motivations behind exiting the Punisher sequel when he did.

However, Walter Hill should have directed this movie. Didn't AICN say he was in the running to direct, but was turned down? Maybe the producers were intimidated by his resume and needed a newbie they can control.

Ray Stevenson=Punisher. Christian Bale=Batman. Ioan Gruffud=Reed Richards. Good actors. Good fits for their respective roles (with the possible exception of Gruffud.) My point is that Americans dont really seem to give a shit if somebody from another country plays an iconic American hero. I seem to remember all of the hubbub back when it appeared that the Bond producers were looking at non-brits for 007; i.e. Goran Visjnic and Hugh Jackman. Same thing with Renee Zellweger as Bridgett Jones and Anne Hathaway as whover-the-fuck. I'm honestly just curious as to what that mindset is all about. Maybe one of the British Geeks can enlighten me.

    Ray Liotta, Punisher, etc.

    by mosquito march

Ever since GOODFELLAS, I wanted Ray Liotta to play Frank Castle. He's kind of been typecast as slimey characters, but he's a great actor and I'd still buy him in the role. In fact, he's young enough to be convincing as a badass killer, and old enough to have been one of the last guys out of 'Nam, which is an element of the character that seems so essential to The Punisher that its absence in the two movies has made them less interesting to me. If they have to cast a young guy, I would love to see them set the story in the late '70s or early-to-mid '80s. Punisher came in to his own in that whole post-Vietnam, Reagan-Miami Vice era. If you update it and make him a heroic cop or FBI agent who just goes out for revenge - well, that could be anybody. I defnitely feel that The Punisher was always inside Frank Castle, that it came out a bit in 'Nam, and his family helped him put the 'monster' away...for a while. Thomas Jane played the all-American good-guy cop, and that is just not Frank Castle. Neither was Dolph's Castle, but at least he had that hard, detatched, psychotic vigilante kind of thing going on. When the sidekick tells him all the mobsters' kids are going to be killed by the Yakuza, his first instinct is to do absolutely *nothing*, because he knows he's going to be dealing with this whole new generation of baby mobsters. That is actually pretty fucking hardcore stuff. Thomas Jane's Castle could never, ever have entertained that kind of decision, because he's too much of a "hero". Dolph's movie was bad because they didn't put any money into it. Jane's was bad because Hensleigh just didn't fucking get it.

Any doubts about Stevenson's badassness as Titus Pullo should melt away if you see that gladiatorial scene in Rome's first season. Holy frackin' shit, that scene was intense, bloodier than anything you'd see in most R rated flicks. I never saw the TJ Punisher, but I might see this sequel with Titus doing the punishing. Oh yeah, and he's an incredible actor with great range and subtlety.

    Got to agree with Barnaby

Hooligans / Green St was abysmal. Laughable. As an Englishman who actually goes to games, the film was dreadful. Ask any Hammers' what they think about it, across the board embarrassment is what I'd expect. The lead guy's accent was Dick-Van Dyke bad. Almost on a par with Tommy Lee Jones' Irish accent in Blown Away. And the 'noble' fight at the end with Gladiator-esque music? I half expected to see Charlie singing 'I'm forever blowing bubbles' through wheat-fields after he got killed. Hooligans are just that, not some noble soldiers who fall into line together to fight off other bad hooligans. They're all, to a man, a bunch of twats. Twats who will happily attack and abuse a passing pensioner as they will a rival fan. As for the bravery bullshit, they're only brave when they're in packs of ten or more, chasing down a few unlucky sods who are foolish enough to wander in the wrong pub round a game. Truth be told it isn't really a problem any more. I've rarely seen trouble and its often more bravado quickly followed by running away than anything. And whilst some can say they aren't too bothered about accuracy, (which is a good job in this case) surely you give a damn about plot, pacing, acting, story, drama, characters?

I just kept wanting all the lead characters to have the shit kicked out of them so I could get some satisfaction for having sat through that tripe. Hey, wait, maybe it worked on me on a base level, made me desire the inevitable final violent conflict... hmmmm.

Tom Jane was passionate about the film

The thought of him doing(or really not doing) a Walter Hill directed Garth Ennis scipted Punisher flick pisses me off beyond reason. Fuck you Lionsgate, if this is not R ,like hard R or set in NYC you will be punished for real

You summed up my feelings exactly Jam

Everything about the film just seemed so horribly misjudged.

SoylentMean you are right on about MAX

    by boondock devil

The Punisher Max series should be the bible to whoever writes the script for the next movie. Shy away from comical sidekicks and have Frank Castle... oh I don't know... actually punish bad people in horribly brutal ways.

Also, they really should use Barracda as a foil instead of Jigsaw. Much much better bad guy and would be perfect for someone like Ving Rahmes to step into for that role.

    ugh

I don't know much about this guy. So whatever. But picking the chick who did Hooligans. Can't speak to accuracy not being a soccer (sorry football) fan. But the movie was silly and boring. They must have spiked the kool aid at that SXSW screening. All I heard was how awesome it was. And when I finally saw it I thought it was histrionic and dull. Love how the wife cluelessly drives INTO the gangfight at the end, baby, SUV and all. This does not bode well. I heard Dahl might be up for it but I guess not. Shame. The first Punisher was bad. All that homophobic stuff and Castle lugging around a fake fire hydrant. And looked like a bad 80's movie. You know kinda like the first Punisher. Sadly, a week later Man on Fire came out and showed how it should be done. Face it. Punisher is going to be committed to the dustbin of bad Marvel Adaptations. The monkeys are running the show over there as they screw up property after property. Funny how it looks like they can get it right with Iron Man (but hey...wait til we see it right?) and then fuck up another one so bad. Ahhh well. At least Caruso is doing Y.

    Barnaby & Jam

I agree with all your comments about HOOLIGANS. I would also like to add that the chick totally misused all these classic Stone Roses tunes that made no sense in the context of the film at all. It's nice to see that someone's a fan, but it had the same effect on me that all the music in DONNIE DARKO did (particularly with "Head Over Heels"): I couldn't help thinking these newbie directors are desperate to shoot videos for their favorite songs, and so they shoehorn these nostalgic musical montages into their movies to satisfy themselves instead of using music that's right for the scene, or better yet, cutting the scene entirely because it doesn't move the plot forward.
