on every possible level. I'm probably setting myself up for a disappointment, but it still looks and feels so right by what little information we have seen/read. I'm a big RDJ fan, so I'm already a little biased in that department. 2008 is looking great.

nothing against the comics-I just never got into him....was always a Batman man.but everything Ive seen for this thus far makes it look like it'll be worth a look...Downey Jnr seems a perfect fit for the role-although does anyone else agree with me that he shouldnt have been as promoted as much for Zodiac? His part wasnt really that big, or at the end really integral to the story-it was just Bobby showing up, doing his schtick for a bit and disappearing....at the en when your told what happened to him I was like "who? Oh yeah....who cares?"

Better personality, better looks and has the ability to speak above a whisper unlike miss Lang...if I ever see her dramatically whispering something to Clark in that fucking barn again....Ill change the channel...I MEAN IT! Plus, Chloe's just kind of a better character...this supergirl looks hot but I guarantee shes just a vagina in a pair of knee high boots in the show. Theres no other reason you would dress a character like that if not to distract the audience from something else thats lacking.....

I can sense that even the doubters...the ones who could never envision Downey being Tony Stark are starting to come around now. Photos like this make it easy to see he was the right choice. Beyond awesome. Downey is the man. that is all there is to say. This movie will be freaking amazing!!! and to the person who wrote about Downey in Zodiac.. sorry but I have to disagree with you. He deserves all of the great reviews he got from that movie. He is Paul Avery! He is not doing Downey schtick. Reporters who knew Avery said Downey was perfect in the part. Hand him his supporting Oscar nomination now.

not "Tim Story awkward", but definitely reminds Favreau's odd angles and silly choices in Elf or Zathura.

Details aside, IM at Comic-Con is gonna kick asses. Unless the probable teaser sucked (which I doubt), it's gonna be the star of the show. Between IM, Hulk and TDK, no wonder why Fox took the coward's way out with their shitty properties...

    by liljuniorbrown

Incredible Hulk is the one i'm worried about. Not that the actors involved aren't top notch,so far I am seriously impressed with the cast for IH, i'm just worried as to what they can bring to the table. We gotta see Hulk battling it out with Abomination, tearing shit up big time. I would kill to see the ending have Sam Jackson ride up in a jeep, tell General Ross "Dr.Banner is coming with me,his country needs him." Then follow that up with, "Come with me Dr.Banner, I would like to introduce you to Tony Stark,a man you have alot in common with." Damn I'm a geek for an Avengers or World's Finest/Justice Leauge movie. I'd even settle for a Daredevil/ Punisher team up flick.

    by picardsucks

Finally a superhero movie being made that seeminly doesn't have a big fat hollywood tweak on it.
List of bad Superhero Hollywood tweaks.
    1. 30 ft tall Hulk and Nick Nolte
    absorbing man - Why??? Lame!!
    2. 6 ft 2" Calvin Klein model
prettyboy as Wolverine. I know Jackman has grown on naby of us and I loved him in the Fountain and Prestige but Wolverine is a little 5ft hairy runt, it's alot of his underdog charm. I can see the preproduction meeting now with a bunch of people who never read a comic book. "Oh no Wolverine has to be a handsome leading man, no can't be short has to be tall, and no body hair." Yikes!!
    3. FF- just bad all the way around
    4. Daredevil- Bad Kingpin, Red haired Anglo looking Elektra???
    5. Goblin suits in Spiderman. Could have been perfect films, both Goblin suits really pissed me off. Smacked of suit tampering with original concept.

Well you get the point. Everything we've seen so far on Iron Man seems quite true to the comic and I appreciate it. Can't wait!!

IRON MAN fans got a assfucking with that Nick Fury cast

    by monkey_king

Enough is enough with the retro casting and the tie-in to the ULTIMATE universe. Nick Fury should've been Mel Gibson and have no ties(None, nada, zippo, etc..) with MARVEL's Ultimate books or animated films. This only makes fans take the film less seriously. I didn't mind a black King Pin in the DD film, but this has gone too far. What's next, Prince Namor played by Michael Jai White? Wonder Woman played by Lucy Liu? Stick to comic canon and your films will make more $$.

You said "Marvels track record is taking quite a beating lately (ghost rider, X3, SM3, etc)

I bet most studios wish they had movies taking a beating like X3 and SM3. SM3 has made almost 900 Million wordwide, XM3 459 Million.

Even the least of them, Ghost Rider, made double its production budget during its wordwide theatrical run. Not a runaway hit but far from a flop by any stretch.

So yeah, maybe there's some good will lost by comic fans, but their movies, in general, have cleaned up at the box office.

Even a subpar movie like Daredevil did 178M wordwide.

Anyways, I mention all this because I'm not quite sure what you mean by "taking a beating". These guys are raking in the cash from movies and tie-ins.

    Iron Man for dummies

    by dazzler69

Since asked Iron Man was a weapon designer who got captured by Charlie in Nam and forced to make weapons. Instead he had parts enough to make a suit of armor to escape. Liking the armor he decided to turn into a super-hero and not make weapons anymore. The quark they seem to be focusing on in the movie is his days as a drunk when pressure got too much for him when he lost his multi-million dollar co. to a rival. In current comics he's a facist, which Marvel is having a lot of fun with. Killing Cap America because of things indirectly related to what Stark (Iron Man) did.

I read in an interview with Singer that box-office grosses from sequels usually reflect what the audience felt about the films preceding it. A lot of people said "hey. Spider-Man 1 and 2 were great. The ads look great. I bet that unfavorable review is wrong." And there was intense advertising on TONS of screens. So they made money, not because they were good movies, but well-marketed and widely distributed. All of the movies you mentioned did not do well in their second week at the box office. That means not too many people went to see them twice.

We here want to see good movies and are genuinely happy when good movies do well at the box office. But this summer is VERY disheartening. SM3, Transformers, ROSS were ALL disapointing. And it means that less people will go to see the next sequels. I'm finding myself, along with a LOT of talkbalkers, to be ho-hum about new movie hype. Iron Man? Might be good, but after the let-downs? I'm not going to go crazy about it or even see it on opening weekend. I'll wait till a friend recommends it.

but I must admit that the downside of the casting of RDJ in the role (and I'm speaking as a lifelong Shellhead fan, not that it makes my opinion more valid, but still...) is that I can't picture him as the character with just...err, a picture.

It's the same with other established actors (I have nthing against RDJ, I dug him in KKBB, Hearts and souls, etc...): until you see them PLAYING the part, with the voice and mannerisms, you can't really see anything but a goofy guy wearing a fine-tuned Power Glove. Fav said he didn't wanted a name bigger than the role

    by spencertrilby

but one can wonder if RDJ's antics (strikingly similar to Tony's) weighed or not in the balance when Favreau took his decision.

Personnally I don't think so. It's good stuff for tabloids and lame movie magazines if the movie's a success, but no professionnal director (a former actor, nonetheless) would take such a decision based on this. It's not only unprofessionnal, but also an insult to the job of Comedian.

But I can see why people question this casting choice, it's human. Honestly, who didn't crack a joke or two about Downey, back in the days? I'm ashamed of it now, but since every lousy reporter raises the question it shows it's still in the air. But I'm pretty sure a clean, catholic goody-two-shoes could've played the part too. They're fuckin actors.

    by superninja

who has been in and out of rehab as an alcoholic - which is central to the character's conflict in this case, not just an aside. But for the most part, my objections to Downey are that he is not handsome or dashing enough to be Tony. He and usually plays losers or beaten down people, which he is admittedly good at. Tony is those things on the inside, but he completely doesn't look it on the outside. And putting a goatee on RDJ doesn't fix that.

I'm not sure about that point: I watched KKBB with my girlfriend and the more Downey's character was a loser, the more my gf creamed her panties for him (and her female friends too). I don't know if that says something about our relationship, but it certainly proves that Downey + big bucks + goatee = turns chicks on. And I'm pretty sure that the female demographic will be strong for that movie.

    by spencertrilby

to me Stark looks more like Cruise or Desmond Harrington, or even Jim Caviezel. I don't think Downey looks less dashing than the others, he just played too few of these roles to really stand out. Downey as Bruce Wayne/Batman would be awful, I agree. But it's a whole different game IMHO: Wayne is just a cover up, as Batman really takes over Wayne's persona. On the other hand, Stark is much more prominent, and Shellhead is really just a part he's playing. You see what I mean?

in their films and less straightforward superhero translation. In the films almost all of them have come across more-or-less as ordinary people. Batman like most DC characters is more of a pure archtype.

Also, that is a good point about there being no

    by superninja

confusion as to who Stark is - Iron Man is just a costume. With Batman the real person is somewhere in the middle of Batman and Bruce Wayne and there is always an internal battle going on. One of the things I really liked about Batman Begins was bringing that out and making Bruce a real person who just puts on in front of society. He still has those normal desires but they're overshadowed by the responsibilities he has chosen as Batman.

    by spencertrilby

that's precisely why I believe Downey somehow fits the part. I can picture him as a flawed guy. But Downey as an Archetype wouldn't work for me.

As for Wayne "a real person who just puts on in front of society" in Batman Begins, that's funny because I thought that aspect (as in the scene where he brings two models to the restaurant and acts like a prick - or even his attempt to act drunk to force the people out of trouble) were just screaming "Tony Stark" to me. And since David Goyer worked on an Iron Man script while writing BB, I'm also pretty sure it's far from coincidental.

    by superninja

Bale works because he can alternate between charming and reptilian. I don't like American Psycho, but I think most people knew he could pull off Batman after that performance. Part of my thing with RDJ is that I've never found him charming in any of his roles, just desperate and deeply flawed.

I'm not an expert on Iron Man, but my impression of Tony Stark is that he is a desperate and deeply flawed character. (The whole arms dealer, alcoholic, heart failure thing.) I'd want someone who could bring out those characteristics to play the part and I think Downey fits the bill. I'm excited for this movie and I hope it'll be better than the recent Marvel movies.

I was never an Iron Man fanboy, but I'm liking the way this film is looking. Love the casting of Downey Jr. and Howard. Hopefully it'll be good. While I think Kristin Kreuk is beautiful, she's getting abit too skinny in recent seasons. Plus Lana is too annoying for words. Chloe on the otherhand is awesome except when she pines for Clark (stupid writers). One of favourite characters on the show. Plus Alison Mack is uber hot and possesses "The Chloevage". ;P

Robert DJ is the ONLY man in existence that i will allow to play iron man. he will suck all the corny out of this movie, something that most superhero movies need. (save batman begins, chris bale is, how you say, EXCELLENT!) but umm also that pimp guy as warmachine sounds off teh fuckin hook. i hope three 6 mafia write a track for the movie and win another oscar for it.
P.S. CHRISTIAN BALE OWNS FUCKING MOVIES. (and if you dont think he is the best batman besides adam w then there is clearly something wrong)

Mandarin, Crimson Dynamio, Ghost, Frost, Fin Fang Foom (a dragon), Evil Armor (It went AI on him..hate when that happens), Titanium Man (Paul Mac sang a song about him). Firepower. There is lots for Iron Man to do besides get drunk.

Don't know much about Iron Man.....

since I am more of a DC kind of guy. To me, the most interesting facet of this movie is the casting. I like that they skewed it towards older, more experienced actors instead of pandering to the teeny bopper crowd by casting some early 20-something flavor of the month. I don't know what effect that will have on the bottom line, but it should make for MUCH more interesting viewing.

i hear that the hand can be used like a "fast pass" at the bev-mo store....... as for the casting- would you rather have 3 oscar caliber performers( downey, howard, paltrow), or would you prefer another alba and some english guy who should stick to period pieces.... as for the chloe v. lana debate, fuck that... clarks mom is a cougar (grrrrrrr)

Yeah Annette O'Toole is some nice piece of MILF's ass

    by spencertrilby

and for the record Kristin Kreuk is way hotter than average Chloe. If standing by Chloe is your way to depreciate yourself and multiply your chances by not rooting for the unattainable hottie and taking the girl next door's side I have bad news for y'all: even the blonde one is unreachable, from an average TBer's standard. And if I remember well her father is none other than ol' Michael Ironside. I'd never try to fuck Ironside's daughter, fictional or not. Not in a million years.

Oh, BTW: Smallville sucks. It's a sissy show, an even greater insult than Singer's "Superman", from the hacks Gough & Millar, no less!!! (I read their Iron Man script a few years back, it was an utter piece of shit). My gf forced me to watch Smallville. Word.
