Last "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode begins filming today ((without an ending '''))

Published at:  Mar 29, 1999 12:33:15 PM CST

Glen here...

...with some brief news about the series finale of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Today marks the first day of shooting on the final episode of Star Trek: Deep Space
Nine
. The series finale will be a two hour movie which will air in early June. In essence, this
means "the final episode" is actually two episodes, because the finale (to be aired as a TV
movie) will eventually be split into two parts (two one hour episodes) for syndication purposes.

Atmosphere around the set & production offices is described as "sad", "heavy", "bittersweet",
but "full of acceptance and resolve."

I am told that as of early weekend (late Friday, early Saturday), the script for the last half of the
finale episode had yet to be completed. Which means, in theory, it is conceivable the series
finale may have begun begun filming today without...well....a series finale.

Before everyone gets all bent out of shape about this, there is some degree of precedence for
beginning filming without having a complete script ready to use (not on DS9 as much as
Voyager, and on other series as well.)

It is entirely possible that one of several things has happened here: the ending exists but
is being held back for some sort of retooling; the ending was...simply...still being constructed at the
time my source sent me the information; the ending of the script wasn't finished as of early weekend,
and had been hammered out over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and is now ready to go; the ending
just ain't done yet no matter how you look at it.

And, of course, there are other possibilities a guy like me would simply know nothing about.
None the less, it's an intriguing little tid bit from Terok Nor. I will follow-up on this should
more news become apparent. I feel rather confident that the delayed scripting of the ending is
indeed happening. However, the "why" of the matter is still a mystery to me.

And, for those who haven't heard, the Star Trek Hallmark Christmas ornament vehicle
this year is the Runabout Rio Grande (featuring the voice of Worf). One would think that...given the
impending conclusion of Deep Space Nine...Hallmark might have issued an ornament of
DS9 itself. I mean, the thing already looks like an ornament.

Perhaps that's how the series will end: the station's string will snap...it will go crashing down to
Bajor...the resulting explosion creates a detonation strong enough to push Bajor out of its orbit (a la
Space: 1999)....Bajor spins out of orbit an plugs up the wormhole.

Probably not...

    DS9: The End

    by kwisatz haderach

Good bye old friend. I am kind of sad to see that DS9's time has come but we all knew it would. For all of the changes it's been through (good and bad) it has been probably the best Star Trek show yet. Hopefully, the show will be allowed to bow out gracefully with a maybe one or two motion pictures. Not a million like STNG has suffered through. In the end we still have Voyager to look forward to, Sort Of. By any means this run has been great and the finale will also be great so don't sweat it that the script ain't finished. It will all work out in the end.

    Final Script

    by tvguy

I know why the final script hasn't been finished. Some studio execs found out that the writers were planning on actually resolving the various storylines of DS9. (Even worse, the writers were respecting continuity instead of just making up new history to suit their needs.) Anyway, the studio execs couldn't let the writers actually resolve anything! What about the movies! What about the franchise! So they fired these writers and brought in their ordinary hacks who don't know anything about the show and who want to eventually sell a movie script based on all the loose ends and plot holes left by their weak writing. The script will soon be finished as soon as they can come up with an ending that is confusing, unsatisfying and in no way relating to the series as a whole. **Just kidding, I hope.**

I have heard that Worf gets stranded somewhere after a battle with the Dominion in the next new episode. I just hope he's not in the Defiant at the time. That ship is a bad ass motherfucker. I would hate to see it go, even though they have already shown there are more of the type.

    by chapaev

I think, blowing up the station doesn't affect the chances of DS9 movies being made.A new, better one can always be built by Starfleet if DS9 finale's plot does involve Bajor being accepted into the Federation. And it's very likely.

Count me in as another person who is disinterested in the Phantom Menace (I'll probably see it, it's just not a big deal to me). DS9, however, is brilliant and wonderful, and I will miss it. In a way, though, I hope there won't be spinoff movies if they hinder the creativity of the last episodes.

    prediction

    by raindog2

The war with the Dominion is at a climax. Terok Nor is about to be destroyed once and for all by the Jem Hadar. Fierce battle with lots of FX. Finally they board the station and make it to Ops, where (backed by a soundtrack that consists of one really high violin note) a prophet appears to Sisko and Kira, after which Sisko stuns Weyoun and the female founder with a dramatic Star Trek speech, ending with "Now get the hell out of our quadrant." Chastised, the Dominion reps order the Jem Hadar away, and after making sure they won't be alone on the other side of the wormhole, they leave. The prophet appears to Sisko again asking him to come home "beyond the wormhole". Sisko accepts his destiny and goes into the wormhole, which closes in a big psychedelic FX sequence after a tear-jerker performance from Brooks.

We flash forward 20 years where Jake is narrating over brief scenes showing the cast. He's the poet laureate of the Federation. Worf is commander of the Klingon fleet. Bashir is chief medical guy in Starfleet. Dax is conspicuously absent. O'Brien is still the chief engineer of some starship, of which ironically Nog is the captain. Dukat is raving mad in a Federation asylum. We see a very rich Quark running a casino on Risa. Odo is still with Kira, who is the revered president (or Kai or whatever) of Bajor telling her changeling kids about the legend of the Emissary, who has become a god on Bajor, which has been accepted into the Federation following its role in driving the Dominion out. The last scene has Kira looking up into the night sky - as she does every night according to Jake - and imagining she sees the Sisko winking at her from the wormhole. She turns around to find the rest of the cast behind her; they've all come to watch the fireworks as DS9 is decommissioned. They fly up in a shuttle and in another big FX sequence it goes up. Jake says something really deep about how the things that matter carry on, and this time the audience sees Sisko winking at us from the wormhole. The end, stay tuned for our special preview of Star Trek XI: Deep Space 10.

I have to say I think DS9 has the best writing of any of the Trek shows. If the execs will let the writers do their thing it's gonna be a great ending no matter what direction they go in. Still, it sucks that it has to end at all.

Chapaev wrote, "I have no doubts- DS9 finale will deliver. For the creators of such a great show failure is simply not an option now." Ahhh, but it is. This current season 7 has been the worst DS9 ever produced... even worse than the rather dreary season 1. If the writers can fail to make season 7 interesting, I'm sure the potential exists for the grand finale to fail as well. I know... I'm being pessimistic. I can't help it. The writers seem to have lost their ability to tell a good tale.

Of course,I have no right to defend season 7 since I haven't seen it.I live in Russia and I watched DS9 only till middle 6th season while living in England. And there is no Trek at all in Russia, where I've now returned. So,you can imagine how I feel about not seeing the DS9 finale.I'm searching the web for everything on season 7 and I've red synopses and seen lots of clips.Of course, that's not enough, but I still think there were nice episodes in season seven - "The Siege Of AR-558" and "Treachery,Faith..." seem like ones. And as the Dominion story arc begins to wrap up things should improve no end.As for the finale - TNG's last season was average but "All Good Things" is one of Trek's finest, I think you'll agree on that.

An extremely vague spoiler + some deduction

    by chapaev

I've just downloaded some DS9 finale characters promos.I don't know if many people seen them. They're about Sisko,Odo,Kira and Bashir. In all of them, the narration contains some vague comments on the character's fate. The most telling is for Bashir. It goes:"Over the years one doctor saved countless lives...saving one more will seal the fate of millions".I think it's a safe bet that Bashir is going to cure a Changeling - either the female shapeshifter or Odo who'd get the virus somehow. With his enhanced abilities Bashir is clearly the right person for the job. It's inevitable that the Dominion will battle the Federation in the finale, but it wouldn't be Star Trek without some compromise being reached at the end.And healing the Founders is the likely reason.

    Thank God it is ending

    by sting

    a) I am happy to see DS9 is ending on a high note. The last 9 eps sound cool, especially w/Dukat giving the axe to Winn (Literraly). WOrf will be on Enterprise E for one of the eps for a mission. Hopefully Miles and family will actually be involved in the plot rather than playing second string to little boy Dax. b) I am happy to see DS9 ENDING. Its better to leave on a high note, than beat the bush till its dead (e.g. Simpsons, Married with Children, Highlander) c) I do not care much for Star Wars, but I am waiting with high hopes for Austin Powers (I keep on remembering Dr. Evil going "Tuck Tuck Tuck, I am hip, I am square"). Does anyone else agree with me that Star Wars will be a great movie if they have Yoda slip in a line saying "Waka, Waka, Waka" (from his role as Fozzie), I personally would die laughing.

why is Voyager still on the air?

    by sting

Why is it getting worse by the ep? Did you people see the last 2. The one with Course: Pavilion, my mistake that's where they were smoking it up when they created that ep. Do they think we are idiots, what was the real Voyager doing 3 weeks away from Demon planet, where the Demon ship was destroyed. In the previous ep, the real ship traveled 15 years into the future. If you take the logic that this ep was shot before the 2 hr movie, then why were both ships near the planet, considering both had traveled 10 months. Last week's ep was even worse, I saw 5 minutes and then I turned it off because I realized the plot was a rip-off from an old TNG ep where the Enterprise was trapped in distorted space, while Troi was having these hallucinations which allowed an alien to communicate a means of escape to her. This is my final straw, when I watch this show I don't ask for much except for a little continuity. They have failed in plot, direction, and now even their time line is off. And has anyone else heard the fact that Engineer Joe Carey will be back. I thought he was the one who was killed off by the giant Lizard when the Kazon trapped them on the planet. Do they think we have alzheimer's or something. Most of us know when we are being fed crap. I guess the only time I will watch Voyager is for the 2 hr movies and the cliffhanger finales, just because I know that these are the only eps that they actually develop and think out. I look to Crusade, Stargate, Buffy, and hopefully EArth final conflict (if it gets better). Poltergeist and Outer limits have lost their spunk, the first has become a bad porn flick and the second has become political agenda central. Too bad DS9 and Babylon are over, the two shows that were good from before 1995. X-filez is starting to get on my nerve, half the time they have decent shows (and I am starting to get back into the alien ones), but they are also pulling a Voyager by giving us a bunch of crappy eps like the Lupin ep and the flesh eating lawn-monster ep. Hell sitcoms have gone to hell (except for Frasier and maybe Just shoot me), now they want to destroy sci-fi--our last best hope for a good plot.

    new ST Series?

    by jdon

has anyone heard anything new about a Star Trek series from the beginning of space travel? I think that might be cool. A place where transporters don't work yet and only the Vulcans are known to Earth. Before the Federation, the neutral zone, the borg, the wormhole. Back to the basics, exploring space not having any idea what is out there.

B5: Not relevant. DS9: I have been a fan of Star Trek for over 15 years. If I want to say DS9 S7 sucked, I'll say it. It's my right. As a fan. So go bugger off Berserker. .................................. To the dude from Russia: You're right, "The Siege..." was a good season 7 episode. Unfortunately, it was the only one. The rest put me to sleep. :( I've been severely disappointed with DS9 ever since season 6's "Suckrifice of Angels." Used to be my second favorite show, but not any more.

    The End

    by khan

I am not sure if there will be any movies made with the DS9 crew. But as you remember, a movie was a sure deal for TNG befor they started filming the final episode. They only took a couple days off after filming the final episode before startink to work on Generations.

Let's face it. DS9 is not as popular as TNG or TOS. But it IS (or was, that is) a good series-much better than Babylon5 crap, Nightman POS, or Stairway to Heaven BS. And 20 years from now, it WILL be remembered, as that non-star trek, non-aliens-of the-week Star Trek show. The characters, the action, the humor... They all delivered during the seven years. I still think the Dominion is one of the most badass alien race in the whole sci-fi history- very smart idea of shapeshifting.
So, folks, burry your battle axes. DS9 never wanted to be a flagship show of any network or any franchise. It is just that creatively written, beautifully filmed show about the most exciting journeys of all: A journey into the human psyche, human relationships.
So long Ben, Odo, Nerys, Miles, Quark, Jadzia, Ezri, Jake, Nog, Morn, Rom, Julian, Leeta, Michael, Keiko, even Dukat, Weyoun, Winn, and all those people I learned to live during the years. We'll miss you. No matter what...

    Season One and Seven

    by blok narpin

To the poster who wrote that RIDICULOUS comment about season 7 being even worse then the "dreary" season 1 I have this to say: When season 1 first aired I turned to my friend during one show (Either Duet or A Man Alone) and said that the show was of the quality of a THIRD season show. I told him if this show is this good now imagine how great it will be when the show develops. True to my words seven years ago the show HAS developed and become the best of all the Treks. Season 7 started out VERY strong with some GREAT shows. The 2 part season premire was among tyhier best ever. Treachy, Faith and the Great River, Covenant, and Take me out to the Holosuite followed and were excellent. They slipped in mid season with the "Murder SHe Wrote with Ezri" episodes but the last 2 (Baddabing, Baddabang and Section 31 episode with the latin title) have been great. The show slipped mid season but this season has by no means been bad. If this show is one thing it is consistant. If they keep that consistancy up the finalie will be great.

I like Babylon 5 as much as I like Trek.Even B5 season 5.It had many good episodes - "View From the Gallery",most telepath episodes, the one with the Drazi homeworld. Not great, but lots of good moments. To be honest,I didn't see the last 4 eps,but I've found detailed synopses on the net and I think the conclusion of Centauri Prime/Londo storyline was very good. And "Sleeping In Light" is a great finale (but that's part of season 4,isn't it..).

If you thought "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" and "Baddabang, Baddabing" were good episodes... well, you are easily entertained. And there's nothing wrong that. I simply have higher expectations. For me, those two episodes deserve only one label: CRAP. (shrug) But, that's just my opinion... and it IS my opinion, not "ridiculous." Nobody's opinion is ridiculous. ..................................
B5: Yes Berserker, I liked B5. So what? I like complicated, compelling, continuing stories. Is this a crime? Hardly. As you once admitted, you were also enthralled in seasons 1, 2, 3. Hmmmmm. Now, if you'll excuse me, I want to continue my reading of the Lensmen series...

    The Best Episodes?

    by troy

"And Sleeping In Light is a great finale (but that's part of season 4,isn't it..)." Well, that's one way to look at it. :) Of course, that means that the episode Deconstruction of Falling Stars was a part of season 5! (episode 501) That was an awesome episode. One of the best of the entire show. And it was written during the so-called abysmal season 5. .................................. What was DS9's best episode? I liked the Hugo nominee The Visitor. I had tears in my eyes the first time I saw it. I enjoyed the alternate universe episodes a lot (but not the most recent Ferengi one; that was silly). Watching the Odyssey blow up against the superior Dominion forces was fun. Way of the Warrior was also awesome. Hmmm, that's all I can recall.

    If only it was better...

    by fixxxer

Hey kiddies. With DS9 coming to an end, I can't help but wonder why the series couldn't have been better, dammit! All the elements are in place for a kick-ass show, but most of the time they turned out a pretty lame product. If I had to pick a best season, I would certainly pick Michael Dorn's initial campaign, one that started out gloriously with "Way of the Warrior" and contained greats like "Our Man Bashir" and the "Homefront" two-parter. Also good were "Apocalypse Rising" and "Looking for Par'Mach in all the Wrong Places." But anyway, I digress. The fact of the matter is that DS9 has been bogged down by its pretentious, seemingly perpetually angry characters and the fact that Avery Brooks can't act his way out of a bag (although he was particularly good in "American History X," strangely enough). I feel as if the entire DS9 run has been one of squandered opportunities, just as "Voyager" has squandered itself ever since Jeri Ryan came on board. In any event, I'll be watching the DS9 finale because I feel like I owe it to the show to see it on its way. If only it could have been better!!!

    Darn Your RAINDOG

    by jackstar

Darn it, raindog. I was going to make the whole Sleeping in Light joke.

Anyway, I would say it's more then time for DS9 to go. The series just hasn't worked. It was a rip off from the Babylon 5 pilot, except in few instances delivered on showing the grittier side of the UFP it promised, and veered into schmalz after every time it started to really shine.

I am just looking forward to DS9 to receede into re-run memory, Voyager to disapper into the great
void that swallowed ST:5, and for the Little Birds of the Galaxy to come up with something new, and maybe worthwhile.

Personally, I think they should get Peter David to helm a new series. His New Frontier books, if not classics, were solid explorations of another part of the Star Trek mythos and offered conflcit while holding up the basic Roddenberry optimism.

    B5 and new Trek--apples & oranges

    by kirk

I have read all these comments with a combination of bewilderment and amusement. Frankly, you cannot compare the new Trek (TNG/DS9/Voyager) with Babylon 5. B5 was a product of the mind of a single man: Joe Straczynski. New Trek is, frankly, corporate SF: unfocused, lacking any serious thought, concerned more with merchandising and the bottom line than in creating a good solid story. Paramount dictated what happened with these shows. Roddenberry himself was only marginally involved in TNG, and had nothing to do with DS9. He was dead and burnt long before Voyager--good thing for Paramount, as he would never have allowed that show to happen. B5 is actually more comparable to Star Trek (TOS) than to New Trek. You can almost see the evolution from Twilight Zone and Outer Limits through Star Trek to Babylon 5 in terms of quality Science Fiction on TV. And before you dismiss me as some B5 fanboy, I have been a Star Trek/SF fan for 27 years. I think I know what the hell I am talking about.

PS: Comparing any of these shows to Star Wars does not compute here. It's irrelevant to the argument. Star Wars is a roller-coaster ride pure and simple. Don't get me wrong, I'll be right in front of you in line at the movies when Episode One comes out, but it's still irrelevant. By the way, who here remembers when Star Wars was Star Wars, not this "A New Hope" thing?

    Worf on the DS9 Ornament?

    by macca

Okay, lemme get this straight- Hallmark is putting out a Deep Space 9 ornament which will be a runabout (I'm not sure I understand why they didn't use the station, either). The runabout will have Worf's voice on it. Excuse, me, but why did they pick Worf? Granted, he *is* on DS9, but he's probably better-known by the general public for being on TNG. Wouldn't it have made more sense to have had Sisko's or Kira's voice? *shrug* Just my opinion.
