Date Announced for Phoenix Anime

MediaBlasters has announced that their AnimeWorks label will be releasing the first DVD volume of the 2004 anime adaptation of "God Manga" Osamu Tezuka's life's work, Phoenix on October 30th.

Ryousuke Takahashi, a director known for his realistic sci-fi war anime such as Votoms, Gasaraki, Flag and Blue Gender, headed the series that was co-produced by Tezuka Productions and WNET New York. The anime selects a number of stories from Tezuka's exploration of the patterns of human existence. That original opus was produced between 1956-89 and consisted of twelve largely stand-alone books which alternated between jumping forward and backwards in time to capture the story of the human species from the dawn of civilization to its end. Viz Media has been releasing the manga in North America.

The manga was previously adapted into the 1980 movie Phoenix 2772 - Space Firebird, the Rintaro (Metropolis, the X movie) directed 1986 movie The Phoenix: Chapter of Ho-o, and the 1987 one episode OVA The Phoenix: Chapter of Yamato.

The 13 episode series will be releases across three volume. Volume 2 will be released December 4th.

Sooooo......let me see if I have this right.... Evangelion ended.....then they decided that was not enough....so they padded out past that ending....then they decided that ending was not the REAL ending so they made a new ending......now.....it seems that they don't like the beginning either........NGE - Japans Never Ending Story......

Good anime box sets coming out. I wish this stuff was available at more local retail stores. And about Evangelion, I have no interest in the series anymore, they have milked it as much as possible. They need to either create a true sequel to it or just leave it alone. Its over with. And I hope the english tracks on some of those animes are at least decent.

    FINALLY!

    by prof_ender

PHOENIX gets a street date. I remember the original Media Blasters license being announced in 2005. Thought they'd forgot about it. Then again, my bet's on that these DVDs are going to get delayed; as this seems to be the case with practically every Media Blasters title. -_-

All things considered, PHOENIX was pretty good from what I saw of it. If nothing else, the opening theme is truly epic.

    Why?

    by filmfunk

Do Anime characters always have oversized shiny eyes?is it a national insecurity thing? and it amazes me that ALL the artists are born able to draw EXACTLY in the same style!?

It looks like the new EVA films will be remakes

    by godoffireinhell

of the TV series. The first film was already confirmed to cover episodes 1-6. With 4 new films being made, the TV series having had 26 episodes, my guess is they'll just retell the whole story with better animation. And since it was said from the beginning that this movie remake project will be "more accessible" I'm sure they will scale back the weirdness and masturbation scenes.

It's to do with appeal. Nothing to do with ethnicity, just that the larger eyes make the characters appear cute and therefore more appealing, and Japanese love their 'cute' products. The mroe appealing the character design, the more your popular your show may be. It's like asking why are there only attractive people in American movies? Does America have some kind of insecurity about the way they look? Research also indicates that the most appeal is usually foud in the eyes and that's what people tend to look at first. Make the eyes appealing and you grab the person's attention. Also not all anime has oversized eyes. Watch some of the bigger anime feature films or TV shows from Studio Ghibli, Madhouse, Production I.G. etc. Anyway I love Evangelion. And rather than spend money on the countless remastered and re-released box sets of the series, I'd glady pay for one with great updated quality animation! This stuff looks fantastic! Count me sold! And as for what Rebuild is... technically it is a remake but also a retelling that will introduce new characters and make some noticable differences. As for making it more accessible, I believe it'll be the same thing but more fleshed out rather than being too cryptic. I guess we'll have to see how it goes... also word is that there will also be a 'prequel' to the series that may flesh out the 2nd Impact event and the beginnings of GEHIRN and NERV, as well as a supposed 'sequel' that goes past the end of End of Evangelion. So there's plenty to be excited about...

    See: ZETA GUNDAM: MOVIE TRILOGY

From what I've gathered from different news sites and magazines (Newtype, Animenewsservice.com, etc.) the first three movies will surmise/retell/reimagine (pick your verb) the series as well as END OF EVANGELION. The fourth movie is going to be sort of an epilogue.

The thing though that I'm curious about are the run-times. The 3 films that created the ZETA GUNDAM TRILOGY were close to 2 hours in length each. Which was good for ZETA because the original show was like 50 episodes.

Some info I found had the first 2 movies shooting for a 90 minute run time, the 3rd movie going for 60 minutes, and the 4th movie shooting for 30-45 minutes(!!). And now I hear that the 1st movie only covers up until the 5th Angel attacks? Wow. Talk about brevity.

The ZETA GUNDAM TRILOGY took out/retconned a lot of stuff just to fit things in. What will they remove from EVANGELION? The Angels? I don't know. Wasn't there this huge deal about the exact number of Angels?

The information I found about the run times though was from earlier this year/late last year so will it still hold up?

    Anime Big Eyes Because...

    by aznbuddy

When Japan started animating in the early part of the 20th century, they took cues from old American Cartoons like Steamboat Willie from Disney and the like. They liked how friendly big eyes were and it stuck as an institution. In Anime/Manga, simply put: big eyes=friendly, small eyes=evil. Just watch any anime. It's not self-deprecation by the Japanese, it's just a quick way to set the personality of the characters.

is something to get excited about. As for Evangelion I think I will take a wait and see approach. If it is just a straight remake I'll ignore it. If not I'd be interested.
