The Weinsteins don't LOVE MANDY LANE anymore, but Senator does!!!

Published at:  Jul 17, 2007 5:50:58 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I saw this film, ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE, at SXSW last March. It was a local production, super low budget and I had to give it a look. I'm a genre fan and it's a hometown film.

It's not a perfect film, but director Jonathan Levine did a remarkable job with the budget he had to tell this story. The general thrust is it's about a group of high school kids who invite Mandy Lane, a girl who became incredibly hot over the summer, to a party at a secluded ranch. She's shy and turns down the advances of all the boys... who, as the title suggests, really want to bone her. Of course, someone is picking these kids off during the night.

The Weinstein Co. picked the flick up originally, but the originally stated release date of July 20th was quickly approaching with no ads or trailers or anything. Something was obviously wrong and it seems that they did indeed end up dumping the movie, but Senator has come in to release it in the US. They're waiting until early 2008 to put it in theaters... I would guess that the crowded fall has a lot to do with that (HALLOWEEN, SAW, THE MIST, I AM LEGEND to list a few genre titles hitting from Sept-Dec), but Senator plans to give it a real release, on over 1000 screens.

I think dropping the movie early 2008 will give it a better chance than dumping it in the middle of the summer movie season anyway, so this move is probably a good one. Thoughts?

Wienstien should put it in some sort of double bill

    by spandau belly

Ya know, like the way they used to put two trashy genre pieces together for the price of one? I'm sure audiences would flock to it. Maybe get a Walter B cameo.

Was that a joke Spandu Belly?

My sarcasm detector isn't working. Are you suggesting a "Grindhouse" double bill? And if you saw the previews for this, it looks no worse than any other horror flick out there today.

Yeah, it was a Grindhouse joke

Or more a joke about Wienstien's temporary financial ruin resulting from the box office failure of Grindhouse.I haven't seen the trailer and I'm not making fun of this particular movie....yet.

Saw it at the Toronto Film Festival last year

It wasn't as good as Black Sheep. And neither one could hold a bear trap to Severance.

I also saw it at TIFF last September...

...and 100% agree with Garbageman33 that Severence was the best of the movies that played in the Midnight Madness Programme. I enjoyed Mandy Lane but I definitely don't get all of the hype surrounding it. It didn't bring anything new or exciting to the horror genre and I actually thought that the ending was a bit of a cliched mess.

    seen it

Caught a screener of it. I heard the Weinsteins were having them reshoot the ending to make it more bloody and more sexy. Wonder if thats still happening. It could use it. I get why everyone is so curious about it. Despite the recent articles about horror's greatly exaggerated demise, people will always love a good horror flick. This frankly ain't one of 'em. It's well shot with some good actors. But it is boooooring. Yeah they did a good job capturing that woozy feel of a high school party that stretches out too long. But the characters are uninteresting. Mandy Lane is a smug, blank prescence. The kills are rather gruesome but lack tension (as does the whole movie). Well made but boring. Neither a revelation nor a great example of the genre. I hope this Severance movie is good. That guys flick with Franka SUCKED.

    Bye, Bye Horror flicks

It's obvious that with all the horror movies tanking at the boxoffice that the W. Boys are rethinking their corporate strategy.
