Patinkin Out At CRIMINAL MINDS!!

Published at:  Jul 17, 2007 12:03:54 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

CBS, Disney and Mandy Patinkin all confirm that the actor is out of the ensemble FBI profiler drama “Criminal Minds.”

Oddly reminiscent, I say, of Patinkin’s departure from another CBS show, David E. Kelley’s “Chicago Hope,” more than a decade ago.

Read the Hollywood Reporter’s story on the matter here.

Don't give a shit about the show, but this is a weird situation. I feel for the writers of Criminal Minds, having to write out their main character right before the new season starts shooting with no notice.

Patinkin ain't in it. DLM creator Bryan Fuller is busy making "Pushing Daisies" for ABC, so he did not write it.

    by stormwatcher

Damn he never stays on any show long. I remember my sister getting huge into Chicago Hope talking all about this Mandy guy, I get into it and boom he quits! Then it does the slow slide to obscurity, until he returned, but then it still got axed. How reliable is Herc in saying he aint in a DLM movie? I heard it was DTV not DTTelevision. Also, I hear Herc hates short blond women.

    I DIDN"T KNOW ABOUT A DLM MOVIE!!!

    by charlie murphy

details, please!!! anyways, about criminal minds, patinkin was (aside from aj cook and paget brewster's looks) the best part about the show. CM is so poorly written, at least in its first year, that i haven't been able to stomach it. although this probably proves he's an overgrown baby, the show is still going to lose viewers, as i'm sure this will have an extremely sloppy explanation. "Oh, guys... Gideon went into hiding after testifying against the mob". please...

I just read info about the DLM movie

    by charlie murphy

direct to video, with all the original cast, except mandy patinkin, and apparently laura harris' daisy will be recast. here's the synopsis, courtesy of moviehole: “When Calvin Kane, a slick businessman who couldn't care less about helping the newly dead, takes over Rube's [the character played by Patinkin] Head Reaper duties, all hell breaks loose, bringing out the worst in Daisy, Roxy, and Mason. George, however, is determined to set her latest, botched reap right, especially because the boy who was supposed to die, Hudson Hart, is her little sister Reggie's secret boyfriend. In the process, George and Reggie re-connect for real, for the first time.” google "dead like me movie" and click the movie hole links for more info, including the link to ellen muth's myspace page where she discusses the film. They've filmed one day, apparently.

Didn't Patinkin quit Chicago Hope too?

    by tvguy4566

If I remember correctly Patinkin abruptly quit Chicago Hope and was in battles with producers of that show. I think Patinkin may be a bit of a premadonna.

    Patinkin probably won't be missed

    by tvguy4566

I watch the show, but it isn't one of my favorites. It seems that they have been reducing Patinkin's role over the course of last season. There were weeks that he would have an obligitory scene or two, but not have much to do otherwise. I actually felt he didn't fit into the tone of the show all that well. This show like Law and Order and CSI is a show where the show is bigger than the sum of it's actors anyway.

Could be good for the show, or the kiss of death

    by infinitywave

I think the cast is strong enough for the show to survive without him, and narratively speaking an indefinite sabbatical for Gideon fits with the series finale. They'll need a very interesting replacement though. And I guess now they'll never be able to air that episode that was pulled around the Virginia Tech shooting.

    by big jim

Maybe he didn't think it would go past one season. He could collect the paycheque, do the work, and move on after a year or two. It's the Natalie Schafer Syndrome. Do the pilot for the paycheque (or, in Mrs. Howell's case, the free trip to Hawaii) on a show you don't think will succeed, then get stuck when it becomes a hit.A DLM movie without Rube and the original Daisy, Daisy Adair? Or Bryan Fuller? Sounds like a sequel to a Jim Carrey movie without Jim Carrey.

    by charlie murphy

if the dvd does well. ellen muth seems excited on her blog. and let's not forget, bryan fuller had nothing to do with DLM season two either, and that worked out pretty good. (as i recall, he only ever wrote two hours of the show, and left after year one.) i'm so pumped, with or without patinkin.

I saw Ellen Muth at a convention a couple months ago. She confirmed that they're doing a straight to video movie, shooting starting in the fall. She said she didn't have a script yet, but said the movie was going to wrap up the story of the TV series.

    by novaman5000

filming it now so the deed is done, but no one will give any answers as to whether or not she's involved. It looks like she's not, but Ellen Muth seemed surprised by the suggest that Laura Harris wasn't in it on her blog.
I don't know, I just know that recasting fucking sucks, and I love DLM and Daisy's fallen slutty starlet character. If they can write Rube out, why not just write Daisy out, too. Recasting is so fucking sloppy in my opinion.

Fuller wasn't involved with ANYTHING Dead Like Me

    by novaman5000

since the 4th episode in the 1 season guys. He remained on the show in name only after a falling out with MGM. The guys who continued the show after he left are the ones responsible for the movie. I'm not too worried about content, just that aforementioned recasting nonsense.

Mandy can't stay with a series for long

    by kabong

especially if he doesn't get to emote all over the place. It was a surprise that he constrained himself in the role of just one of the team for as long as he did. I was hoping to see him and Keith Carradine go at it again.

But now the producers can bring in a replacement agent: TEEN FBI PSYCHIC.

The writers killed off the character

    by gothgate

long before this. gideon started off with such promise, such an intriguing background, and then shortly after the first few eps, it was he who faded into the background. they had this absolutely fantastic actor and never fully used him. he kept being written out to the actors who skewed younger.

i don't know if i'll keep watching. i'll give it a few tries. i do like reid, garcia, & morgan though i can't stand hotchner. and the one woman i liked they dumped off the show.

though an interesting plot might be if elle came back as a case, having turned into a vigilante serial killer.

but the whole reason i tuned into this series was based on the name, mandy patinkin. without him, they're going to have to work hard to keep my interest.

I think he wanted out a long time ago

    by cine-guy

I don't watch the show often. It just never grabbed me. I did notice that Mandy wasn't around as much as season 1. Some people here seem to be hinting that the writers had written him, but knowing Mandy's track record and after talking to somebody who worked with him, I'd day they were forced to write him out because he didn't want to be there and the producers and cast were fine with that.

A friend of mine does extra work and worked it for this season and she heard that Mandy just failed to show up for the table read of the first episode and that's when the producers really found out that he wasn't coming back.

I watched the first season and thought it was ok. I felt if it got cancelled I would not miss it. Caught a couple of episodes this year but that's it. If they brought in Andre Braugher (or someone similar) I would give this show another look.

Big Jim: another caught in a hit was Calista Flockhart

    by mgthedj

Watch the first 13 episodes of season one, then campare that to everything after. She did not want to be there. My hypothesis is since she was a Broadway actress she had no idea David Kelly had the clout to keep his show on the air for an entire season. When football season ended and the ratings went up, Fox greenlit a season 2. Now the "poster-child" for doing the TV show for the money and not getting stuck is Jennifer Connelly. She did a show a few years ago and it was cancelled after 13 weeks. She went back to films, won the Oscar, and hooked-up with the co-star.-----later-----m
