DEADWOOD TV-Movies Far From A Sure Thing!!

HBO had its Television Critics Association event Thursday. From a report in Friday morning’s Hollywood Reporter:
One deviation from the [ousted HBO chief Chris] Albrecht playbook that spurred questions from TCA critics: The execs waffled on plans set by their predecessor to produce a pair of movies that would wrap up the story line of the canceled series "Deadwood." [HBO co-president Richard] Plepler put the odds for greenlighting a film at "50-50," citing the fact that members of the cast are committed to other projects and the willingness of the series' creator, David Milch, to pursue it.
"If David is game for this and we can figure it out, we'll figure it out," [HBO co-president Michael] Lombardo said.
Other HBO news:
* “Curb Your Enthusiasm” returns for a 10-episode sixth season Sept. 9. Larry David says there could be subsequent seasons.
* “The Wire” returns the first quarter of 2008.
* “Extras” will film its final episode next month.
* “John From Cincinnati” has not yet received a second-season order.
* “The Pacific,” the World War II miniseries from Spielberg and Hanks, is due late 2009.

how I don't "get" John from Cincinnati. Yes, the mystical elements are pretty cool. The problem that I have is with the characters and their lack of resemblance to actual human beings. If any person could actually float in the air, trying to figure out why it's happening would be their main concern. If my kid (or grandkid) made a complete recovery from having a broken spinal cord and being braindead, it would probably be a topic of conversation beyond bitching about the reporters in front of the house. The only person that has had a genuine reaction to the events that have occurred is Dr. Smith, who literally gave up his entire life's work after witnessing a miracle that he's still struggling to rationalize.

...despite being a better show than it gets credit for, is that if it fails then Milch might be a little more eager to revisit his past glory with Deadwood and push the subject of getting those wrap up movies happening. It'd be a crying cocksucking shame if we never again got to see Seth Bullock, Al Swearengen and all the rest on our screens again, and I'd be willing to bet cold hard cash money that Deadwood would get a better send off than the damn Sopranos did.

HBO doesn't get it. They produce these wonderful shows, air them once, then reair them with little ad support. Then they release the shows on dvd for 100 fuckin cocksuckin dollars. Who the fuck is ever going to give a show a chance at that fucking rate? I'm the biggest fucking fan of this mother fucking show and only own season 1, and that's cause I got it as fucking birthday fucking present. 12 fucking 1-hour episodes, they want the show to do fucking better and they charge 12 hours of fucking tv for 100 bucks? Shit Lost and Heroes come in at 60 bucks and that's what?, 22 episodes at 43mins each. Cocksuckers. HBO exclusified their own asses out of ratings, new viewers, emmys and every cocksucking thing that gives a channel a rep and power and money and viewers. Dumb hoopleheaded cocksuckers.

The waiting is over in terms of this network. You cannot have people waiting a year or more for a show. A few months is different then waiting 18 months then 8 months for a show to fucking hit air.

They could set the movies mostly in the interior of the Gem, that would keep down the budget. The vast majority of scenes in the series took place there anyway.

I figured the movies would be difficult to do at best, no matter how much I wanted them or anyone else did. But I am also not surprised at the tentativeness of the suits towards JFC, which I happen to like, since HBO's MO has been to renew shows fairly early into the run(see Big Love, Deadwood). I had also already guessed that the Wire (Best Show Ever) would be back in January.

Surfers, especially families of surfers, might be amused with such a phenomenon, and probably would go internal with the event, rather than freak and look for rationality. The Doctor's reaction is great, I hope they continue with that storyline. It seems like all of these side characters are slowly turning into "surfer apostles," lol. The way the doctor just mosied around the motel, alley way, and liquor store reminds me of what it's like in a beach town. Laid back, different people everywhere just hanging out with each other. If business needs to be done, it's done without rush or that sense of dire need you get when you go to Circuit City or the mall. :) The grandma reminds me of some of my surfer buddies mom's. They really get the feel of a beach town. I'm in SD so I've been around it my entire life, and I like that it's finally been brought to TV. I'm not sold on the show yet, but I'm giving it a season to work out the story. So far I enjoyed the first 3 episodes, but these last two have been trying my patience. I'm bored with the dealers at the motel, but I like all of the other side stories. I don't exactly "get" the show just yet, but for me it's a plot problem, not a character problem.

I don't know the ratings, but they must be high, or it must be damn cheap to produce it in Baltimore...or wherever they shoot it. There are so many exterior shots, cars being damaged, fair amount of gunplay. I would think that it costs quite a penny to produce. Maybe it's cheap compared to Deadwood's sets and clothing, but I hear about as much buzz for the Wire as I did of Deadwood, which wasn't much.

David Simon said in an interview that he is trusted with more seasons of The Wire because he runs a tight ship and always brings it in under budget - he said that TV and movie people so routinely allow things to run overbudget once they're given the go-ahead, it makes a big impression each time he makes a season and then hands money back to HBO...

...wether or not Deadwood gets a couple of TV movies to close up. Such a rich inviroment could never be concluded by a couple of TV movies. You'd need at least a complete season to do that. How many of these supposed movies were there to be made? 2? 3? It's simply not enough space and time to wrap things up.

Like or dislike John from Cincinnati, it's best to be prepared that this will be another in HBO's increasing vault of unfinished series. If HBO renews it for a second season-- which is extremely iffy considering its ratings and perception problem-- I'm guessing it's going to be for the kind of shortened season, wrap-up order that "Rome" received. More likely HBO will cut its losses and this season will be it, so be prepared to lack any real closure, particularly if this season ends on a cliffhanger or a game-changing revelation. Considering you pay them for their services, think of HBO these days as some hot prostitute you're having sex with who often stops halfway through, says "oops, I have a headache" and just gets up and leaves. With HBO, while it might be great at first, you have to be prepared to throw your money away, get left hanging, and have to finish things off on your own.

Just like NBC tanked after it lost Seinfeld and Friends, now HBO starts it's long slide without Sex in the City and The Soprano's. What HBO should have done is put all it's efforts in making Deadwood it's flagpole series (one way would have been to lower DVD prices to hook more people into the show). With no big shows in the near future, HBO is basically fucked!

They can't afford to sustain Deadwood, but people think they're going to make a reasonable "Game of Thrones"? Doubtful. They would be better off just giving Milich his last season of Deadwood than trying to futz around with these movies.

Okay, first, before I’m branded a heretic for what I’m about to write, I want to say this: I love Deadwood. I think it might be the apex of greatness in the realm of television. Phenomenal acting and dialog, profound character insights, deeply simmering emotional resonance. And I want it back for a miniseries. If it were announced, I’d be the first one to shit grinning monkey skulls in anticipation.
But I think to say that it needs to come back in order to have closure is a somewhat misleading reason. On watching the last episode of the third season, I was struck by the completeness, the finality of the thematic threads. I thought, “My God, if this is truly the last we will ever see of Deadwood, it has ended so pitch perfectly, in such a depressingly appropriate note, it’s as though this was how it was intended to go out.”
Ellsworth is dead. He knew going up against Hearst might have that consequence. Alma’s gold mine is in the hands of her enemy. The way of the pen has conquered the way of the gun. As it does in our age, as it has in all modern ages, really. Alma gets to stay in Deadwood, but for an incredible price. A price many pay for the safety of their lives and the lives of those they love.
Trixie, having shot and injured Hearst (but not killed, because how can you kill the inexorable march of economic progress?) is being spirited away by Sol, the moral center of the show.
Bullock says in the end that he didn’t feel like he had done any good. And that’s what his attitude about being a lawman was at the beginning of the series. It’s part of the reason he wanted to simply be a merchant rather than a sheriff.
Throughout the show, the theme of might makes right, of the inevitable victory of duplicity and clandestine actions, have been in the forefront. And what is victory? And what is defeat? Does a life saved (Alma’s) balance a life taken (Ellsworth)?
The idea of who is just and unjust is also constant theme, a theme which is perfectly realized in the last episode. Swearengen cannot bring himself to give Trixie to Hearst. He loves her and recognizes that she has a better future with Sol than she could anywhere else. So he butchers an innocent to keep her safe. Meanwhile Bullock, for all his righteous posturing, allows the innocent’s murder to go unanswered so that Sol and Trixie can have that life together. A perfect illustration of the moral ambiguity of human nature.
And is there a better comment on how human interaction seems to dominate the history of man than that the rich and powerful get what they want and those who stand in their way are either brushed aside or committed to the earth in a pine box? Not everyone dies, not everyone’s lives are destroyed. But some die, and some lives are destroyed.
If there is never going to be another episode of Deadwood, I mourn its passing. I miss these people and want to see them again. But I’m not one who needs perfect closure for all character arcs. As a person who can be satisfied—deeply satisfied—by thematic closure, I am very pleased, if also saddened, by the way the series ended.
In life, we don’t always know what happens to our next-door neighbors, or co-workers who leave the company, or even our best childhood friends. The nature of life is that we don’t know how things turn out. And so it is in Deadwood. As Al says in the final moments of the last episode when Johnny wants to be assured that the girl sacrificed to save Trixie’s life didn’t suffer: “He wants me to tell him something pretty.” Well, at the risk of being extremely unpopular on this thread, I don’t want to be told something pretty, especially about Deadwood. Because Deadwood isn’t pretty. It’s as ugly as death.
Believe me, what I really wish is that there was an entire fourth season. After all, in the fourth year of its existence, the real town of Deadwood was almost entirely destroyed by a massive fire. Consumed in a hellish conflagration. I mean holy shit, what a perfect way—narratively, thematically—that would have been to end the series.
So yes, I want to see Deadwood come back to life. But not because I feel I’m left dangling, but more because there’s just not enough good TV on the airwaves (I have not seen John From Cincinnati), and Deadwood was the show proved that fact wrong.
No doubt I’ll have all detractors and no supporters in my suppositions and opinions. But in the end, I’m just glad Deadwood happened at all. And that’s really the most I can hope for.

At least in The Sopranos, even if you hated the ending, the really had no place to go because they killed every character off. In Deadwood, there are so many stories to tell or to finish. And I am NOT about milking a franchise to death (see other Milch series, NYPD Blue). But this one was reaching its prime. Season 3 was the best yet, and if they did a Season 4, it likely would not have been disappointing, as nearly every character (not just major character), was intact, with their story to be concluded. And they should be concluded, because this is a television show, and not real life. And though it's based on history, a TV series should have a conclusion, or it leads a bad taste.

Great analysis of the final episode. While I was disappointed with the feel of the final episode, you do seem to have captured exactly what Milch was trying to do with the finale. As you say, it's perfectly summed up with Swearengen's last line. “He wants me to tell him something pretty.” I would have loved two or three two-hour Deadwood movies. They could have gotten us to the fire and destruction of Deadwood, and ended it there. Really, I'd give anything to see these characters again, no matter the narrative. Sadly, we're not going to have that opportunity.

The last Deadwood was entertaining, but some of you are reading too far into the details, trying to catch the "underlying subtext" of all of David Milch's "deep psychological meanings in every scene." Give me a fucking break. So we hate the last Sopranos, even though things were wrapped up nicely, but we love the last Deadwood, because everything was left vague, unsettled, and unfinished? Oooookay!

Strabo and myself. After seeing the third season finale, I thought to myself, "Well, I guess that's a fairly good closing note, since there's a good chance we'll never get those movies". Both HBO and Showtime seem to find a way to keep just enough good programming on to keep me paying to watch. I kept HBO for the sopranos and Deadwood, and now they've got me with Entourage. I'm watching JFC, but at this point I wouldn't keep subscribing for just it. I subbed to SHOWTIME for Dead Like Me, but I stayed for Weeds. I watched The Tudors, but again I wouldn't pay for only it. I've heard good thing's about HBO's flight of the conchords, so I'll try to catch up on it, and may give Californication a shot on Showtime. Still, I'd welcome more Swearingen and Bullock with open arms.

I've not seen a single episode. Even though some of my friends say it's the best series they've ever seen, I refuse to spend hundreds of dollars only to be shitfucked out of any conclusion. Just like I won't watch Carnivale when my friend offers to let me borrow his. Nope, no conclusion no watch. HBO is just stupid. They make a couple of movies, wrap up the story, drop a big Deadwood complete series on Blu Ray & HD set in some kick ass package. Blammo! Instant money!

Will last two or three years on HBO. To make the show look anything like the authors vision will cost as much as Rome. HBO does not like spending that kind of money. They will give up on it or cut the budget so much that its becomes a talkback joke. I have zero faith in HBO.

That's the best take on the Deadwood finale I have ever read. I've been schooled. As for HBO fucking this up and not making another season/movies, I'm not surprised. I think Milch is the linchpin and if Milch tells HBO he is ready to go back to Deadwood, it makes John From Cincy look like it's a pet project and he doesn't want them to think that. Once they cancel JFC, I think he'll be more amenable to revisiting Deadwood.

It's one of the best comedy shows of the past twenty years...but most of season 5 was wide off the mark...I mean he whole thing where a weddin gets broken off cos Larry isnt wearing a replacement jacket given to him and he convinces everyone theyre eating Oscar? Balls. Hopefully season 6 is a major return to form-and I think the problem is that the makers are now confused as to who Larry is supposd to be. Theyve go the idea that HE is the asshole, who comes charging in looking for conflict(see the Korean bookie episode again, and the majority of season 5), but the point of the show is that everybody else is the asshole and Larry is just trying to get by-evidenced by the first two seasons.

It's the kind of show that would take years to develop an audience. I'm TRYING to enjoy it, but the fact that I'm trying means that most of America has lost interest...if they ever had any. Come HBO finish Deadwood. Remember when HBO was the channel that allowed for creative freedom and wasn't associated with random cancellations? Those were the days...Cocksuckers!

I always hear that thrown around after a series is over.. Angel, Buffy, etc. etc. It NEVER happens. The only instances I can think of are detective shows and family shows. Oh sure there will be a reunion show every now and again but that doesn't count.

...has picked up quite a bit in its second season. It's not as good as the shows they cancel, but I don't find it boring by any means. I love Margene and they're doing a good job at making Bill look like this good guy, while still allowing him to be dangerously flawed. That last ep seemed to set the groundwork for Boss Lady, his co-worker and his brother to all abandon him at some point. Never thought I'd find that show so entertaining.
JFC needs a little work. Why hasn't anyone slapped Rebacca DeMornay's character yet? What a psycho bitch! But everyone else seems to love and respect her for some unknown reason. I do like the gimmick of John saying only the things he's heard before. That's probably the only thing on the show that works for me. Nothing to write home about though. I doubt it'll see a second season and I doubt that I'll care.
Flight of the Concords wouldn't have made it if it were a comedy central show. I like offbeat and all, but it just comes across as some boring comedy central show that gets canceled before you've even heard about it. Only watched one ep though. But it should make me laugh at least once. A lot of people slammed Lucky Louie, but it did make me laugh several times an episode.
It's all Showtime right now. Dexter, Tudors, Weeds, Bullshit are all really good shows. They seem to have their house in order for the time being.

It was like that whole "Buffy movies" thing. It's just something the network says to stop the pissed off fans from complaining to them. I'm happy for more Curb, but I REALLY wish they didn't use their finale from last year when they did then. It was the perfect ending, and even called "The End", and I feel it's impact will be negated with even more seasons. I suppose Larry wants to keep working now, after the divorce, to keep himself busy.

Deadwood is the best show ever precisely for the amount of closure it gives. People always want more because they know it will pay off.
The show does not ressurect the same problem every season.
Season One. Al is a bad guy.
Season Two, Al is an ally and Bullock is less sympathetic.
Season Three, Hearst is a bad guy and by the end of the season he is gone.
Deadwood sets a premise and resolves it by the end. -

Deadwood was cancelled for two reasons: 1) It's a period piece so it's really expensive to produce and 2) Milch was so into his JFC idea that he didn't want to continue. The ratings were mediocre by HBO's standards but not enough for them to feel the venture was worthwhile. With that in mind they're all still pricks, Milch included, for dicking the fans over by not providing closure. There's still time to rectify that boys! Fuckin' cocksuckers!

How can fans of Deadwood hate on JFC? To me, Deadwood's first few episodes were kind of boring, and I didn't feel like it would be something I watched every week, which ended up being what I did anyway. All I'm saying is it's ignorant to knock a show in it's infant stage, especially when it is from a favored producer like Milch. Just let it grow into the show that Milch is capable of producing, and stop complaining, because a lot of you will be eating your words by the end of the season, I guaruntee.

Showtime pretty much has most of my interest now. Dexter rocked and I can't wait for the 2nd season. And The Pacific in late 2009? OIY. At least it's coming ;( I hope they show lots of the 1st Marine Division!

If Milch don't wanna make em, that's that--- but this sounds suspiciously like Hollywood exec BS-speak. Any exec who doesn't greenlight those telefilms will be considered an idiot when history makes its final call on Deadwood--- without a doubt one of the finest, most unique pieces or pop-art ever to grace the small screen. Shame!

The best series/mini-series on HBO was by far From the Earth to the Moon. But right now I really like Entourage.

Forget Sopranos. That show didnt innovate shit, it didnt add anything special to the Goodfellas-Mafia genre and wasn't deserving of the hype bestowed upon it (see Series Finale.
On the other hand, DEADWOOD absolutely will go down as a classic, the deepest, most engrossing and brilliantly acted show in years. Just see how Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant are getting big roles in films strictly because of that show. A show that truly had no boundaries, didn't compromise on story, themes or character. A show that demanded the viewer to pay attention, think, interpret subtexts and plots and indeed rewatch past episodes to understand foreshadowing.
Just the dialogue, Shakespearean Iambic-penatmeter is music to my ears. Give the people what they want. Give the fans a proper ending. Make the right move. Don't let it rot for ten years and try to have some shitty reunion special. Do it right, while the time is ripe.

I am surprised they didn't mention the John Adams miniseries that will debut next year. That is there big event for next year. The Pacific wasn't going to happen until at least 2009 anyway.

Hey I'm pissed off like everybody else about Deadwood but Showtime's series are mediocre at best.I've rented all the Showtime series and they're watchable some better than others because of the things pay cable is allowed to get away with.I havent seen Dexter yet but I doubt its good enough that I'd be willing to drop HBO.HBO's worst series is better than Showtime's best from what I've watched.The Wire alone is worth having HBO for.Or save a few bucks and rent it but dont switch to a half assed channel because your upset.

...if you were going to do it (and I don't really suggest it because it has no chance of working) I would say the five cards Bill was holding when he was murdered in season one, the infamous "dead man's hand" of aces and eights. It would speak to the craven backshooting mentality of canceling Deadwood as they did, promising movies as they did and then taking them away.

...after Carnivale was canceled that was it for me. In fact, I remember making the prediction in the Carnivale canceled talkback that they'd cut off their other shows prematurely as well. HBO has officially run out of worthwhile programming. HBO is going to be in some serious trouble by the end of 2008, as there's no reason for any of their current subscribers to stick around. When Showtime beats HBO in quality programming, it's a very, very sad day.

First you make us wait like 8 years for the last season of The Sopranos and then you bail on Deadwood and Rome to bring us the ridiculous shitfest that is JFC?! Fuck HBO. My subscription has been cancelled as of yesterday and nothing short of bringing back Deadwood for closure of some sort will ever cause me to allow that worthless pile of stinking dung posing as a cable network to air in my home again...

Deadwood was the best TV show I've ever seen.
I'm buying the three seasons on DVD to keep in my personal collection.
The ending, though not perfect, works much better than the endings of Carnivale, Sopranos or Six Feet Under (all of which I loved, none of which I'm buying on DVD due to unsatisfying conclusions.)
That being said, I'm pissed that the series ended early. I'm so tired of committing emotionally to these series only to have HBO finally decide that each episode is too expensive. God damn.
Make the movies, show us how Deadwood burned.
