    Futurama Thoughts

    by wombatcontrol

Whoa... that was cool. It was a nice cross between a cartoon with more of the depth of CGI. The jokes were funny, and even though the first ep had to be chocked full of exposition to get the series started, it was still hysterical. Now, if they can keep the concept fresh, which I hope they can, this series could be more than worthy sucessor to The Simpsons. That in of itself is saying quite a lot.

    The future is Purple

    by sparkles

Im a huge fan of the Simpsons, so I was looking forward to this one. What I saw wasnt a kickass show, but it seems to have potential. I'll trust in Matt Groening for this one, and I hope Fox gives it a chance to develop into a series, because potential doesn't always keep the shows afloat. I'd like to see some voice changes though, a new oneeyed chick's voice, instead of that married with children ho's, and a new robot. I can live with Frys. See ya!

    my thoughts

    by madbomber

I just got done watching Furutrama and from what I saw, it looks like it could have a future, but the writing seemed a little flat at times. Since it was the first episode, I'll let that slide. I like all of the charcters, especially Bender. As long as it doesn't die on Tuesday nights after it moves, Fox may have a winner.

    highlights

    by not todd

"Stomach contents of Space Wasp", Matt Groening's head in a jar, the "Angelyne" billboard, Bender literally sh*tting a brick, cameo by one of Blinky's descendants, "We'll be there in five minutes". This is going to be a great show, and god damn all Fox executives to hell for planning to move it opposite Buffy on Tuesdays.

    What a pile....

    by bigstu

Ugh. I loved the old Simpsons. From season 2 until season 7, I watched, loved, and memorized every episode ("My cat's breath smells like cat food"). Lately, the show has lost all humor, and the writers have obviously run out of ideas. So Matt G. (don't want to spell his name!) decided he needed a fallback show by the time the Simpsons was cancelled. His half-baked solution: Futurama.

Now, it had a few chuckles here and there (the suicide booth was great), but overall I was totally disappointed. I think at this point, it is time to throw in the towel. To Matt: "You had lots of great ideas, and for a while, you kicked ass. Take Seinfeld's honorable path, and quit while you're ahead."

*snif* The best part of Futurama was the preview for Family Guy. God that show is funny. I still watch the episode from after the superbowl every week :) "Who touched the thermostat!?"

    Very promising!

    by essemtee

And very funny too! I love the 'ding-dong' theme tune already! Bender's obviously the funniest of the lot, with the best lines, and - dare I say it - is the Homer of this show! Notice how the animation in the first season of The Simpsons is really crudely drawn compared to this season? Fururama's already spiffed up with 3D/2D animation, so I can't even imagine what it'll be like years from now if it catches on, which I certainly hope it does!

Definetly a very promising first show. The Bender character is going to be a laugh out loud riot, and that Leela character, even though she's a cartoon, is one hell of a hot cartoon.

    Potentiality Factor

    by smilin'jackruby

It's interesting that the posts so far focus a lot on potential. "Futurama" has all the potential in the world to be just as wonderful, fleshed out, and funny as fuck as "The Simpsons" once was (don't get me wrong, I love "The Simpsons" more than life itself, but it doesn't take a genius to realize the writing is just not as joke-every-single-frame as it used to be - but I'll still watch it every week as it's funnier than anything else on TV). "Futurama" will, if it's anything like "The Simpsons" in progression, just add and add and add characters that will create a whole universe and I think that's where a lot of the "potential" lies. If done skillfully, there will be a second television program I actually work my schedule around.

    A quote from Matt Groening...

    by prankster

"Yeah, Simpsons is still on in the year 3000. With original episodes. Only the fans on the internet are always complaining that the last 500 years aren't as funny as the first 500 years."

    Actual commentary from me

    by prankster

I agree that the theme song is great, the characters show a lot of potential (c'mon, let's not dis Leela just because her voice used to be on "Married...with Children"). The animation is good and quite different from the Simpsons. (Not the look but the colour scheme and the way the characters move.) I agree it wasn't fall-down hilarious, although it sure as hell had its moments, but it had something that will get me to watch a show without fail...cleverness. Even if the idea wasn't all that funny, it made me say, "Cool". The ice-skating segueway into the shark pond...Bender putting his arms back on (did anyone catch that?) the countdown sequences, the fireworks/laser battle climax, Fry's being doomed to be a delivery boy...I mean, there's so much thought here that complaining about the quality of the jokes is almost beside the point. And yes, imagine what they can do with this show if it starts to build up the kind of elaborate, multi-character universe that the Simpsons has. I'll be watching for quite some time.

    by pifto

Tonight's premier wasn't bad at all. It relly does show potential. The first couple of seasons of the Simpsons weren't that great remember. I agree with some of you though that Leelas voice ought to change. It just doesn't flow with the cartoon. Still even if it remains I know I'll get used to it. Homer's voice changed a lttle in the beginning. For those of you who think The Simpsons isn't really great anymore, I don't know what you're talking about. Sure I remember funnier sequences in the past than there have been recently but it's still a freakin' riot. Here's hoping the show takes off and becomes a huge hit. P.S. anyone who was expecting the premier to be as good as "The Simpsons" deserved to be dissapointed.

    by psyker

I thought the first episode was a good start. If later episodes build upon this one, like they built upon the early episodes of the Simpsons, then this one will be a great watch. I wasn't too fond of the tin can, but I liked Leela and Frys. I liked that speed tube and when Frys goes catapulting out of it... the suicide booth and the cryogenic suspension were pretty funny too.

    by darken

I really liked this show. Although, like a couple people mentioned, it's not extremely hilarious yet, I'm pretty happy with what I saw already. It's a quirky, colorful, witty animated sci-fi series already and that's pretty good to start with. If it gets funnier then it'll REALLY have something. It kind of seems like it turn into "Star Wars: The Animated Sitcom" and I mean that in a good way. Should be cool.

    by coop

I laughed out loud several times and I wasn't ready for it to end. Matt G. is a comic genius. If only other animated "comedies" were written as well as this. The networks keep trying to redo the Simpson's success and they don't seem to understand what makes them funny. I hope this show lasts as long as the Simpsons.
    Good job.

    Suicide booths

    by andy social

First, I want to note that I really, really dug Futurama. Most of the kinks and odd pacing problems I saw were probably due to the fact that, this being the first episode, a whole slew of obnoxious exposition had to be inserted through the script. We'll probably see similar flaws over the next few shows, but I'm positive Futurama has one hell of a future, pun intended.

Anyway, on the suicide booths - wanted to point out that they're not Matt G's idea (and he's pointed this out in interviews, I'm not accusing him of intellectual theft) but are, to my knowledge, the creation of American writer Kurt Vonnegut. They're featured prominently in the book "Welcome to the Monkeyhouse," which is recommended to all those with a taste for black humor.

    Rock,

    Futurama and the Simpsons

    by blok narpin

I personally loved the premiere of Futurama. It was just as funny as an average Simpsons episode, and I can't wait to see this show progress. Simpsons really hit it's stride when they started introducing wacky background characters like the Sea Captain, Ralph Wiggum, and the Comic Book Store Guy. WHen Futurama gains it's own wacky supporting cast it should REALLY be awesome. As for the Simpsons, I HIGHLY disagree with ANYONE who tries to say that the show hasn't been as funny lately. Sometimes I think the show is actually getting FUNNIER. As for Futurama, as much as I liked it I won't be watching it because Buffy is more important. Guess I'll see Futurama when Buffy is a re-run.

    by spidahman

I tuned in not wanting it to be anything like the Simpsons. And thankfully, I was rewarded. It had simpsonesque qualities, but it definitely stood alone as a show. I laughed quite a bit and the vision of matt groening's future is frightening cool.

    by no-op

Any show that convices me to review it in slow motion to catch all the single-frame sight gags...
and pays off... is going to get me back next week. It was good to see Ray Walston's head next to our X-files guys.
I fail to find a lot of humor in the robot being a lush, but I can get over it if it isn't always gratuitous. Is the lead character
a reference to our California Nerd Heaven, Fry's Electronics? It is said that in the valley, it's always an acceptable excuse to leave
work to go to Fry's. And usually your boss will decide to go with you.

    A Wider World

    by blink

What most impresses me about Futurama is the sense of sophistication it has already after only one episode. Groening has established a look that is both familiar to his audience and much more complex than anything we've seen from television animation to date. Much of this is due to the generous use of computer animation, I'm sure, but also I think it represents a real leap in content as well.

As much as I like the Simpsons as satire, I'm beginning to find it becoming too self referential to stay fresh. All it can parody is our daily lives, and it's getting a little long in the tooth. Futurama has set itself apart by generating it's own world of rules, and in doing so it can satire not only the course of our technology, advertising, media, and the direction our daily lives will take when acted upon by all these influences, but our fantasy life as well. It's very smart of Mr. Groening to give himself growing room like that. He's showing us a world that won't run the risk of seeming too familiar.

Potential, shmotential, this show is pretty darn funny now! I loved it (Bender drinks Old Fortran - ha!) I noticed, though, that my daughter, a big Simpson's fan, didn't find it too amusing. by toastyken

Leela's voice, i.e. Peg from Married with Children, just didn't seem right to me. But I'm hoping it's just a typecasting thing and I'll get over it in time as the Leela character gets more developed.

I absolutely love Bender, though. He's so awesome.

As for the plot, the jokes were ridiculously funny, but the plotline was just as ridiculously cheesy. Let's home the stories get better than this.

    The "Future" doesn't look so bright . . .

    by pufnstuf

Quite simply, this thing ain't gonna work because it's too high-concept. SIMPSONS works because it's simple - a family. The simplicity rule goes for any "sitcom," animated or not. And, too much exposition in the first episode, so there was no room for humor. Not very funny at all. And, my biggest beef: did anyone else notice how QUIET the show was? Very little music score and few sound effects. It almost seemed unfinished. I'm praying that I'm wrong here and it really kicks in after a few episodes, because Matt G is a genius . . .

    What a cool show!

    by w. leach

THE SIMPSONS is my all-time favorite television show. To me, every episode is a classic (my all-time favorite is probably the one where Homer goes to college). I didn't know what to expect from FUTURAMA. I'm not really a fan of science fiction (am I banned from this site?), but anything with the name Matt Groening attatched to it is worth a look. What a surprise! FUTURAMA just COULD be my second favorite television show. Like THE SIMPSONS (which in my opinion has been the best written show on the air since it premiered in 1990), FUTURAMA is packed with in-jokes, celebrity cameos, and Richard Nixon. Bender is definetely the Homer Simpson of the show. Mmmmm ... beer! The animation is extremely well done (compared to the first season of the SIMPSONS -- crude, but funny), and the voices suit the characters just fine. Long live FUTURAMA, which I predict will become FOX's second-longest running show.

Much enjoyed seeing **YOUR** head in the museum also... you've got a great sence of humor, Matt (and a great sence of Cartooning) I hope Futurama goes for a 10+ year run like the Simpsons (by the way I'm STILL taping them religiously!) highest respects and praise for you and your family... from McK (from one Groening to another and back again)...KEEP CARTOONING cousin because you ROCK SO DAMN HARD! by lester

Okay, it wasn't as funny as the average episode of The Simpsons, but: a) what is? b) it is a first episode, and c) it was so much better than the Simpsons pilot. That show (the best show in the history of television) didn't really take off until the second season.

I also have to say I loved the look of the show (I must have toys! That spaceship was kick ass!) the music and the quality of the animation.

As for the Simpsons, I think its been remarkably consistent. In fact, last night I was thinking (while watching Mr. Burns have half a dozen cows stun bolted to death) that if anything the show has been getting ballsier. There have been some recent clunkers, but some of the stuff this season (the Baldwin/Bassinger show, the Mark Hamil/rat milk show) has been their best ever.

The cops (I think.. don't remember exactly) come up, one of them says "I'm gonna get 23rd century on his ass" or something like that, then they get these lightsaber nightsticks and start beating the hell out of Fry I think it was. Then Leela says (here's the ref) "There's no need to use Force". Heh.. Matt Groening is my hero.

If you've got cable, are pissed that Fox is setting Futurama against the mighty Buffy, and are on the west coast, then there could be hope. If your cable service has WGN (and I think it's required by law) then you can catch Buffy on 3 hours earlier. If that time's too early, just cue up those VCR's. If you're gonna have some cake you might as well eat it too.

The show had it's moments, but it's nothing special yet. Then again, it took The Simpsons a few years before it really developed, and now it's the best show on t.v. Give it time.
