If you want an idea of what Neill Blomkamp and Weta's HALO movie would be like, look no further than this spot!!!

Published at:  Jul 11, 2007 4:03:39 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. So, remember when Peter Jackson was producing the HALO movie and a young guy named Neill Blomkamp was brought in to direct? Well, some money people chickened out and the project went into turn around.

Never content, Weta put their all into producing a series of spots for Microsoft's launch of HALO 3 and Blomkamp directed some live action shorts using Weta's beautiful props that give us an idea of how he'd handle a HALO movie. I'd be very surprised if the chickenshits don't find their backbones again and realize just how much money there is to be made with a HALO movie done right.

At the big Microsoft press conference today they unveiled the new HALO 3 video game trailer and also Blomkamp's live action spot. And yes, I think it's one of many. I don't have too much information, but I do know that a lot more was produced than what made it into this bit.

I think it looks really great myself. It's a little stiff at the end, but seeing the Halo world beginning to get realized just makes my inner geek happy. I want to see the Brutes and Covenant in action, I want to see Master Chief, I want to see the sniper rifle, I want to see the carbine rifle... I want to see it all... And goddamnit I want to see this movie get made.

CLICK HERE TO GO TO BUNGIE.NET... YOU'LL HAVE TO GO THROUGH SOME AGE GATES (lame), BUT SCROLL DOWN TO "HALO: ARMS RACE" AND GET TO CLICKIN'!!!

I bet Halo is still all go, theyre just saying its not to keep things secret and stop spy reports. This thing here looked go. Looked to be quite in the vein of a James Caeron film. Hated the final shot though, looked like something from a z grade sky 1 11pm movie. I really wanna see a halo movie. I think it will show us the likes of something we havent seen since aliens and almost saw in chronicles of riddick.

it took 3 seconds...unless you need to root around in the basement to find your birthday, you should be alright...as for the clip, it looked alright. the music was very Bay, the "getting ready to fight" shots were very Cameron...I didn't see too much that really distinguished it. but I did watch the dude's shorts and they did look amazing, especially for the budgets he had. with WETA behind it, he could do great stuff. but you gotta show me a little action before I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon and bend over for this guy.

    by brundlefly

Geez, that wasn't really THAT great. It's completely derivative of 'Aliens', even the fucking drop ship is identical. This has ALREADY BEEN DONE. I may not love everything Cameron has made but 'Aliens' was sheer fucking genius and it has set the bar so high, few filmmakers have had the imagination to better it. If Blomkamp wants to make a film that most non-gamers will just shrug off as an 'Aliens' rip-off then go ahead and start shooting - but personally, if all these resources are gonna be tapped for a PG13 version of 'Starship Troopers' then I'll wait for the DVD cos this promo film did not blow my skirt up in any way, shape or form. Pity - cos I fucking love Blomkamp's commercial work and short films.

I haven't seen these videos yet, but the intro of Halo 1 the game is very much like Aliens, tapping into a cliched image of marines. In fact, I wanted to join the covenant side because the human characters are walking cliches that didn't give me much cause for sympathy with their goal. What's worse, these idiot marine cyphers are at least partly responsible for releasing The Flood. The game itself looks great and plays superbly, but I was annoyed at the amount of backtracking and repetition involved. And I agree that a Half-Life 2 movie would be cool if, as is usually said, done properly. Thankfully Valve is very picky about the business of who gets to make movies based on their games.

Halo movie would be a spectacular failure

    by smackfu

Just like the Doom movie. It had nothing to do with the Rock, or the story or the execution. It's fundamental to the subject matter. When it comes to games to film, FP shooters do not work. Because FP shooters to film start with the concept 'guys with big guns in cool suits walk around some environment shooting the shit out of things...now, let's figure out *what* they're shooting and *why*'. And the only thing that can transpire from there is a shitty, shitty script who's very existance is based on finding a good reason for people to be shooting random shit on an alien planet. You just can't make a movie that way. The only way a Halo movie would work is if the studio had some phenomenal, original script and decided, 'hey with a few tweaks we could make this into a Halo film and use the name to sell it better'. Then it might work. But FPS to movie, from development stage up? Fucking. Disaster.

Halo is a good game and I would love to see a moie, but I don't think the plot will sustain over a 2-hour movie...Halo takes to much away from popular sci-fi movies that it would be very derivative to actually make a movie.

Do we really need a 200 million dollar version of Doom?

    by sledge hammer

I mean honestly, do you really think a movie version of Halo is going to be any better than what happened with Doom? The plot is fine and servicable enough for a game as an excuse to run 'n gun, but as a film plot it's thinner than Paris Hilton's credibility. Seriously, it'd make ID4 look like a complex character study by comparison. As for this footage, nothing about it has changed my mind, in fact to me it looks like nothing but a standard cheesy game ad, it has no character or sense of cool to it at all. Are the fx well integrated into the footage? Sure, but that didn't make it any more underwhelming to me.Look, I'm no hater, if a Halo movie gets made and it's well done and enjoyable then cool, but I just don't see it, and I've yet to see anything to convince me otherwise so far.

    by tiredpm

...I couldn't agree more. I always thought that they were on some pretty shaky ground with the African-American Marine Sergeant in the game being a direct lift of Apone, but figured it's an archetype so they could get away with it. But when you lift Foehammer from the game and put it in real footage? Good God, is there not a design copyright in effect here? Or did they go through the Pinewoods closets and find the original model from Aliens? The only thing that I liked about the clip was that it was a nice hark back to the days when effects were more practical and they built giant sets. Now that I've said that, I'm probably going to be horrified to find out there wasn't a single non-CG shot in the clip, aren't I...

Comparisons with Aliens, Starship Troopers and Full Metal Jacket aside (which are the anticedents of Halo anyway) it smacks of sheer quality...bigger, better and more importantly 'realer' than I'd expected. God only knows what their take on the Halo worlds and the Flood would be like, but if this is anything to go by, it'd likely set a benchmark in the genre. It'd be a crime if this did'nt get re-financed. Way to go Jacko and Blomkamp!

    Halo Movie Will Rock

    by jaggedsac

Jackson already stated that he believes when Halo 3 releases and makes a massive amount of money like Halo 2 did(150 million the first day), the studios are going to be jumping al over it to be a part of it. If anything the story takes more from the Bible than anything else. A flood has been released and will take control of all sentient life, the forerunners(ancient, long gone race) build Halos all around the universe that are weapons that destroy sentient life within a large distance, and only those in the Ark(forerunner construct that is now found to be earth) are safe from destruction. There is also a religious Covenant involved composed of alien races who believe the Halos are the gateway to the great beyond. Movie would be friggen epic. I guess Saving Private Ryan is a rip-off of any other WW2 movie because all the soldiers look the same. Also the story borrows from Spartan legend in this in that a small handful of children were selected because of their genes, made genetic copies, gave the copies back to the families, took the originals and trained them to be warriors since they were like five. Its a cool story.

...that cannot be doubted (the sunset shots were especially catching) but I hope to hell they do something about that armour in any film - it looked plastic, klunky and silly in a big screen environment. I'm still not sure when people bang on about the Halo 'mythology' - I don't think it's that ingrained in the mass collective as mythology and to be honest, like me most people probably like Halo cos they can shoot shit up not harp on about some story (except that video games don't tell stories, just context to do cool video game shit)

The thing with all these sorts of movies is, can they really bring us closer to the protagonists? Halo, from what I gathered in the first game, is about some guy, a soldier, a military experiment, who is is awoken only when the human race is on the brink of being wiped out.
Half-Life is about an scientist who may be responsible for unleashing a deadly alien threat and who now has to set things right - all the while dodging monsters and evading soldiers sent in not to rescue but to silence witnesses.

I think a writer who cares about the actual stories should be able to make something character-based. Sure, the games aren't inherently complex that way. But that's where the power of, you know, creativity comes in.

The only thing is, if it really gets the greenlight, you know it'll end up looking slick and theatrical and fake like every other big-budget effects flick currently in cinemas. What these studios don't get is that there would be a huge outpouring of fanboy love if they actually had the balls to make a new movie that looked as 'fresh' as this, with the shaky cam and old eighties filmstock style and all.

    AICN-sanctuary for opinionated knuckleheads

    by brycebishop

For God's sake IT'S A PROMOTIONAL SPOT, YOU STUPID FANBOYS! How much money do you think he had to play with? Granted, that last shot was questionable, but those shots of the sunset were fantastic.
As for those of you who are bitching (quite predictably, I might add) about Halo's lack of story? Surprise, surprise--you don't know what you're talking about. There are novels that are cannonical to the universe. Even if you were to (again, quite predictably) complain that you shouldn't have to read a book to enjoy a game, I'm quite sure that Bunjie will use those books to add further depth to the overall story.

    Yeesh. Deep breath dweebs.

I like his style. His 15 minute short in South Africa was amazing. I'm excited by his instincts, almost to the level of Blade Runner.

(Greatest 80's series ever by the way) If Peter Jackson is involved, I'm guessing it will be a tad better than Doom.

    Very underwhelming

    by industrykiller!

And slightly amatuerish. Any shot with a human in it just looks silly. I suppose you could make a gritty, low res Halo movie, except that is not at all the vibe of halo. The game has a far more fantastical edge to it. Just look at the color scheme they use for the aliens. Lots of neons and bright lights. Yeah it's just a short but as a test from the guy who was supposed to direct the film I couldnt in good concience give it a passing grade. I'm not exactly sure how a shot of a sunset counts as being fantastic, I;m pretty sure they used to do that kind of shit regularly on Miami Vice. It just doesn't look like a real world so much as a student film with decent props. But if this is what Halo fans will accept then I suppose Blomkamp couldnt possibly fail.

    BTW im no Halo fanboy

    by industrykiller!

In fact I would say the game is overrated to the level of insanity considering it does absolutely nothing that fps's on the PC had being doing for years and evolved well beyond. The console nature though is pretty fun when you've got a bunch of people together in one place. And I havent read the novels but if you think the story in the games themselves is anything special then man....I can't help ya there.

    Wow that was bad

    by scamsandflams

Really, that was terrible both as an ad and as a demo for what the movie could be. Besides, Halo is a flimsy, derivative IP to base a motion picture off of. Doom had more depth than Halo and look where that went. I MIGHT go see the Halo movie if they resurrect Stanley Kubrick and give him total creative zombie-control. Might.

    CAPTAIN POWER!!!

    by el mamerro

That shit was awesome. I used to have one of the planes to shoot at the TV with during the show.

Anyways, I get what some people are saying about this looking like a high-level student film, but I don't know, that's exciting to me for a reason. In terms of vision and mood, what I see there looks fucking amazing, it would be completely surreal to watch a Halo movie like that.

That said, the whole text bits (they're still using that digital readout font in the future? At least make them glow a little, throw in a flicker or two) and the very last shot are total shit. And hopefully WETA puts in a better effort for the full flick, this is almost there, but still a slight bit dodgy.

To those comparing Halo's plot to Alien or Doom

    by guitaratomik

Read some of the books or just look up the wikipedia. Halo has a deeper mythology and plot then either one of those properties and they could easily make a movie with a deep plot just using what's already been written about it. The Halo Mythos are more guarded and looked after than even the Star Wars canon.

Did someone say Doom has more depth than Halo?

    by jaggedsac

What a dumb cunt. Aliens and Alien probably had fucking simple ass plots. Ship lands, aliens attack, people die. There ya go. Thats it. Oh and for the record, the Doom movie was as much like the Doom games as the TV show Whos The Boss was to Mario games. It was pretty much a shitty zombie movie with the BFG in it(Come on, DNA shit?). Its obvious no one here has played the Halo games. Of course it hasn't done anything computer games haven't done. But what it does, it does ten times smoother. Multiplayer party system on XBox Live == awesomeness, gameplay balance == almost perfect(although pistol from first one was most powerful weapon in game and shouldn't have been), and just all around more fun to play. A game is more than a summation of its technological achievements(ie, graphical doodads and physics), if the gameplay isn't balanced(heres to you Half Life 1 & 2) and fun, all that other shit doesn't mean anything. If you can make a movie about aliens entering into a person, bursting out, and killing, rinse and repeat, then Halo's mythology can be made into a movie.

honestly, i expected more from Neil on this. i've seen his other work, and i was stoked to hear he was gonna be involved with the original project, but now i just feel like i've been blue-balled. the CGI exteriors aren't bad at all, but everything involving the marines just looks hokey. where's his touch?

And what is with that completely shit new age music, is that the best Marty can come up with these days?? Not to mention zero sound design in the game trailer? Halo Overrated?

    by big dick

Naw. Halo had a lot of innovations. The "only two weapons at a time" property was new as well as the recharging force field. What stood out to me was the environments. It was the first FPS that made me feel as if I was in a wide open environment. Before, FPSs seemed to be in corridors or closed in spaces. I do think that the story is overrated but Halo deserves more credit than a lot of people give it.

    by vezner2007

but I'm really indifferent about a Halo movie. The games are fun and all but I'm not convinced that the story would make a good movie. I'll certainly give it the benefit of the doubt though.

I think Blomkamp is extremely talented

    by ewokstew

but I agree that maybe his appproach with this trailer should have been different. It was too much an exercise in "see how much cool mechanical stuff I can model" instead of giving everyone a nod of what the Halo universe or what the story therein is all about. Visually cool, but little else. I still wouldn't count him out, though. If this guy learns to tell a great story, he'll be an Earth bound god.
