Now this sounds cool... Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle to co-star in an espionage thriller called TRAITOR?

Published at:  Jul 11, 2007 2:53:08 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've recently talked about my love of a good cast and how the right actors on a project could take my interest from zero to gaga-insane-can't-wait-for-it.

Seeing Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle playing off each other in an espionage thriller called TRAITOR sounds right up my alley that I don't even need to know any more. I'm there.

But if you're not as easy as I am, the flick is going to be directed by a man named Jeffrey Nachmanoff from his own script, with an "original story by" credit to Steve Martin.

Pearce will play an FBI agent investigating terrorist groups and Cheadle will play a CIA operative working undercover in a terrorist cell who might have gone over to their side, becoming a terrorist himself.

The story is supposed to have a lot of gray area and not present terrorism as a black or white subject.

Sounds fascinating to me and Pearce and Cheadle are two of the best actors working today. It'll be good to see them play with this material. What do you think?

I remember thinking how could such an interesting story with such top notch actors as Larry Fishburn and Jeff Goldblum possibly go wrong?

...and I was shown exactly how, by director Bill Duke...

How'd Pearce's character in Memento remember........

    by doc_strange

That he had been in an accident in which he lost his ability to not make new memories? If told after the fact he had an accident, would he only remember up until the accident and not remember he doesn't have a short-term memory? That always perplexed me but was that intended or was it just sloppy writing?

And his perfomance as Sammy Davis, Jr. in The Rat Pack was fucking awful.

Leonard's (supposed)last memory was seeing his wife dying after being attacked from behind. So he remembers being attacked. His police file and tattoos help him rember the rest. But, I think sometimes you have to suspend a bit of disbelief in order to enjoy such a great concept and a great movie

and the half dozen awards he got for Hotel Rwanda

I mean come on! anyone can do a pitch perfect accent while portraying a real person in a horrendous situation in a movie about a genocide tha thas to do justice to the deaths of thousands of humans. I mean, come ON!! so overrated...JackTheMime is so right on!also, Lost just keeps getting better...and the war in Iraq was justified...

Leonard's tattoo about remembering Sammy Jenkins and his condition helps him realise his current short term memory loss

    Re: Sounds Like Deep Cover

What was wrong with Deep Cover? Not only were there great performances by Lawrence Fishburn and Jeff Goldblum, but the film pulled few punches and didn't pretend the two lead characters lived in nirvana, their lives perfect other than the crime (or whatever motivational device put in play) that brought them into conflict.

What worked best for me, speaking of conflicts between characters, was that their weakness, their –sometimes – contempt or admiration for each other was brought out by their actions, as opposed to some deux ex machina spelling out everything neatly for you.

Both characters were fucked up in their own little ways (but not so unrealistically that you winced every time they were on screen), which sounds a lot like real life.

And it was very stylish and dark (literally and figuratively, with some great photography by Bojan Bazelli – yes, I grabbed a copy from my collection to get that little tidbit.

And for my money Bill Duke is a very good director, who's better than many of his more prolific peers.

    Memento (spoilers)

    by alfiemoon

It's heavily implied that Leonard *can* make new memories - he conditions himself to remember a lot of information since the accident, much of which is false (eg. the fact that his wife was still alive after the attacks, the Sammy Jankis story) in order to help him live his life. It's one of the major reveals of the film.

    Actually, it sounds like...

...almost every John LeCarre novel ever written.

And if Memento's major reveal is that the last two hours of movie you sat through was irrelevant, then GET ME REWRITE!!!

That's what Teddy implied at the end, but I like the idea that you don't know what the truth is. You don't know if Teddy is telling the whole story or just messing with Leonard's mind like he has done the whole time. Or a combination of the both. Man I loved that movie

Yeah, it's not completely clear-cut. I'm glad it kept the ambiguity. Great movie.

Even after LA Confidential and Momento. The guy's a very talented actor and deserves more good parts. Anyone see The Proposition? Great film. The fact that Nick Cave had a hand in it didn't hurt either.

    Anti-Soderbergh

    by cobbio

I'd love to see Guy Peerce and Don Cheadle duke it out in a kickass action drama. After the stinkpot catastrophe (on every level imaginable) that was "Ocean's 13," I'm dying for Cheadle to do something good again. His portrayal of Paul Rusesabagina in "Hotel Rwanda" was intensely powerful, so I know he's got the chops. Just give him something to sink his teeth into, not utter crapola like "Ocean's" shit. I swear, those movies are three of the most self-congratulatory, self-blowjobbing suckfests ever. They made a lot of money, yes, but that was all they did. Soderbergh used to be great, but he dropped onto my "avoid at all costs" director's list with those masturbatory student film exercises. Someone slap that fucker upside the head, please! And then stuff his face up his ass where it belongs.
Sorry, but that's how I feel. Soderbergh hasn't made anything remotely worth watching since "Traffic." I hope this new action drama with Cheadle and Pearce pulls Cheadle away from Soderbergh for good. Because it sounds like it'll be cool.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter

    by doc_strange

Being a Mexican and a United States native, maybe I want to take back my ancestor's land that was stolen. In order to do that what are the measures that need to be taken? Yeah people who are scared of losing what they think they own would label me a terrorist. Everyone else would call me a freedom fighter. Who is right?

This sounds awesome. I would love to know more. Is this more action or talky? Cuz both can be good but I always wanted to see Guy Pearce really do some kick ass stuff. He woudl've made a decent Bond. And Cheadle? The man is an acting god. Steve Martin? I hope he finally gets to do that Matrix-style fight that I'm sure has been his dream since the days of arrows-thru-the-head.

Tight and intense. Great to see a film finally presenting truth as complicated, instead of cut-and-dried, black-and-white, good-versus-evil. I am so sick of adults with the ethical range of a kindergardener. Including our president.
