Neil Gaiman goes to the HELLBOY 2 set and shares some pics!!!

Published at:  Jul 03, 2007 3:06:48 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm just finished catching up on email after the big ol' TRANSFORMERS Robosaurus screening. I don't think I'm going to write a review for that... It's been covered a lot already and I spent a lot of time on that set, dealing with the filmmakers directly, etc. Honestly, if I felt I had something more to add to what's been said already, I would still write up my thoughts, but look no further than Moriarty's great review for my impressions. I will say that more than anything I want to see a sequel. Keep the same team, give the writers a little more time to flesh out their script and start everything rocking from frame one.

But you don't give a shit about that. You're here because you clicked on the headline saying there were HELLBOY 2 pics, courtesy of Neil Gaiman. The pics are on his blog (click the below image to see the blog in question). I've known Guillermo in some capacity for almost 10 years now and I have yet to watch him shoot a movie, but the pics from the set look like its a ton of fun.

Here's one pic... click on in to get to the rest... and remember, Abe is in bright, harsh sunlight, so if he looks a little different I guarantee that's what it is. Enjoy!

    Giants Causeway!

    by theboyfromulster

Part of Hellboy 2 is filming at the Giants Causeway, (a plateau of volcanic hexagonal rocks) which is near my part of the world. Never seen a big Hollywood production being filmed so going to take the woofbag for a walk when its happening and try and get some sneaky pics! Quite a big coo for this part of the world, the only thing I can think of why its being shot here is that there's a big mythical legend type thing that surrounds the place. (Supposedly it was created by a giant, Finn McCool?....don't ask!....)

    by xanadux

I truly liked the first movie and I think this one would be good as well if not better. Considering how much times conversions from comic books to big screen aren't exactly perfect this is a great start. I remember what the director said in the first offical press conference in pre production at a comic con about the first Hellboy, he said he would do everything by the book and so it was. From all i can see, the design looks almost perfect for Abe, wishing well. Ciao.

Anyway, that's crazy they're filming part of Hellboy 2 at the Giant's Causeway.

If the script requires a location that looks like hell on earth, may I recommend redneck Lisburn or piss-soaked Glengormley; might I also add that there's no need for costumes either - plenty of ugly trolls walking around.

I loved the characters in the first film (Hellboy especially - he loves cats and works out while listening to Tom Waits! How can I not love a guy like that?) and the world they created, but it all went a bit wrong toward the end. Not a very satisfying conclusion, and the villain was on the weak side. The guy with sand for blood was much better than Rasputin. He was a cool-looking henchman. Two seems to be the magic number for comic book films, though, so I've got high hopes for this sequel.

Gaiman had ever right to sue Mcfarlane.

    by engelhast

One of the key reasons Todd Mcfaralne left Marvel and took half their stable of artists with him was because of loosing the creative rights to any characters he and others introduced while writing for Marvel. I don’t blame Marvel at all for taking ownership of any new characters their writers introduce because they are after all paying them to do the work. Todd was stupid enough to not put the same stipulation in his contracts. Sorry but because of that Neil Gaiman owns any intellectual prosperity he created or wrote into the Spawn books. Mcfarlane was totally not within his rights to continue using Gaiman’s characters or make toys out them without getting Neil’s permission or paying him for their use.

It is sad that they could not work out the problem without going to court though because they both totally rock. I would love to see a movie based on the book “Good Omens” that Gaiman co-wrote.

    by derlanghaarige

And I'm not saying this, because his other two were Mimic and Blade 2! What's wrong with people when they aren't even able to enjoy a great movie like Hellboy? There was no emo-haircut, it was shorter than 2 hours and it's not based on a stupid toy commercial from the 80's. And what is more important: It's one fucking great movie!
P.S.: Am I the only one who thinks that not the movies are getting dumber, but the audiences?

    by pussy on optimus

Insofar as how the movie played out. I think the first 1/3 was way better than the last 1/3. I still enjoyed most of it, and that's entirely Pearlman's doing, he's fucking awesome. I'll take good characters in crap stories over the other way around any day.

    Abe Sapien

    by spykid the 13th

Abe is responsible for one of the most tooth-grinding moments for me in the first HELLBOY. It comes when he's giving hispep talk and showing off his unsolved Rubik's Cube. He says: "If there's trouble, all us freaks have is each other." Now, Abe is voiced by David Hyde Pierce, so that might be the reason it jars me so badly, but that terrible grammar just smacks me in the face coming from that voice and that character every time. It just seems like, for such a big expression of sentiment, they would want to get it right, and the right way to say that is: "If there's trouble, all we freaks have is each other."

If this puzzles you, I'll break it down for you. If you're ever in a situation where you're not sure whether you should use I or Me or Us or We, just take away the things that confuse you, like this:

If there's trouble, all us freaks have is each other.

If there's trouble, all us have is eachother.

    All us have is eachother.

Now, would you EVER SAY "all us have is eachother?" Well, ok, sure, maybe in the era of "All your base are belong to us" it doesn't sound so bad. But, you know what I mean.

    All we have is eachother.

If there's trouble, all we have is eachother.

If there's trouble, all we freaks have is each other.

God, that annoys me. It's a small gripe, but I hope to gosh whoever edits this script makes sure it doesn't happen again. Abe is clearly meant to be at least somewhat intelligent.

i have heard many a denunciation of the hellboy movie, most often from those who never read the comics. i don't get it. i agree that the ending felt rushed, but is that enough to make the film a failure? i don't think so. i love the movie and was downright giddy when i found out the sequel was definitely a go. the reason why i care that neil gaiman's daughter got to visit the set somehow escapes me. am i to enviously glower at her? i'll pass. whatevs, just please let the next hellboy 2 talkback have some more substantive impetus.
