VERONICA's Last Stand!! MASADA!! BAA BAA!! Herc’s Season-Box DVD Vault!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
It’s a holiday week, and a slow one for new releases. It’s telling, though, that during a “slow” week we still get 10 new TV releases new to DVD.

Stephen Cannell, who created “The Rockford Files,” and would eventually go on to “Tenspeed and Brownshoe,” “Greatest American Hero” and “The A-Team,” created in 1976 two short-lived period series. One was “City of Angels,” inspired by the 1974 success of “Chinatown,” which followed a Depression-era Los Angeles private detective named Jake.
The other was “Baa Baa Black Sheep,”
a World War II series about extremely adept misfit Marine air unit in the Pacific theatre starring “The Wild Wild West’s” Robert Conrad.
One wonders what inspired Cannell and NBC to mount the “Black Sheep,” which lasted only 37 episodes; it hit the network grid two years after Nixon’s resignation (and four months after the release of “All The President’s Men”), when the nation wasn’t in a particularly patriotic mood. It was also carried what was, for the 1970s, a fairly old fashioned vibe; it was the sort of two-fisted war vehicle John Wayne would have felt comfortable driving, more akin to Cannell’s early work with Jack Webb than to the more sophisticated “The Rockford Files” Cannell launched two years before “Baa Baa.”
The new set contains the latter 12 of the first season’s 24 hours, three of which - “Trouble At Fort Apache,” “Devil in The Slot,” and the season finale “The Fastest Gun” (a “Devil” sequel that brought back English-speaking enemy ace Harachi) carry teleplays credited to Cannell himself.
The mocking but honorable Harachi, incidentally, was assayed by Byron Chung, who went on to embody Jin Kwon’s imperious boss and father-in-law on “Lost.”

A must for anyoen who has ever worked in the theatre, and just an all around great, well written drama. I highly recommend it.
-
I knew they built this city on rock and roll but I was wondering "When did Starship have their own TV series?" Sort of like Donny and Marie, but with Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas.
-
It's just Tracy Scoggins. She was in season 5 of Babylon 5 as Commander Lochley. I suspect she's been airbrushed a bit in that picture.
-
...I can't wait for Herc's list of the best hourlongs for 2007. Seeing Veronica just reminded me of it, just because I'm hoping to see VM take the top spot two years in a row AND follow in the footsteps of Angel as a cancelled #1.
-
And, I have to second the love for Slings and Arrows. It's fantastic.
-
Hey Herc, do you think they'll include the FBI pilot as an extra on the Season 3 DVD?
-
always funny to see these US programs that never came across to the uk when i was a kid.
when i was younger all the US tv programs were so much cooler, i guess they all had a bigger budget and you could tell, even as a kid. for most of us growing up in the 80's i'd say we knew all the US programs. it's just so wierd seeing new (old) programs that we've had no idea about!
p.s that tracy scoggins is a babe, but yeah sh'es been around for a while.. i'd still hit it though! -
Sarcas-o-meter is not working, so I'll answer. Yup, it's already been confirmed by Rob Thomas.
-
Must... finish... obsessive... collecting...
-
for sarcasm. Thanks MemBirdman.
-
Loved it as a kid. Rewatched recently as an adult. Amazed at the crap that used to entertain me when I was young.
-
Where the hell is it???!!! and season 3 and 4? WTF? Instead we get "whiteboyz in the hood", "Rising Damp", "A bit of Fry and Laurie" and a horde of other TV shows no one cares about.
-
http://tinyurl.com/34xu6v says he might, along with 3-time Emmy winner Dana Delany. True story; Delany was heavily recruited by the show to play Bree, but she turned 'em down 3 times. This would be a great pickup for the show, as any series Delany is a part of automatically makes it must-see in my eyes. Remember China Beach? :D
-
Yes, it's good. It's a much better adaptation than the movie; it has that "Band of Brothers" / coming-of-age feel to it. Because they screwed up their scheduling and had to put out some clip shows they ran out of money to complete the season so it ends on a cliffhanger. Then again, so did the book, so it fits.
-
Go-Bots is to Transformers.
-
so that makes them the K-Mart of Ghostbusters? I actually have weird memories of that show, watching it in the afternoons, they were on 5 days a week and TRGB was only on on Sat. But speaking of the Real Ghostbusters, does anyone remember the Boogyman episodes, freaked me the F out
-
... And Kong wasn't the gorilla!!! When you're 10 years old... that's some hilarious shit, yo!
-
... well, that's the last season of that show, I guess! Nathan Fillion=Cousin Oliver!
-
... This cartoon was adapted from a live action Ghostbusters Saturday morning kid's show from the late 70s that actually predated the Ghostbusters film that The Real Ghostbusters were based on. The show starred, of all people, Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch from F-Troop (and, of course, some guy in a gorilla suit). Yes, I do hate myself for even knowing shit like this... but someone's gotta do it!
-
Damn, I loved that show when I was little. Wasn't the horse's gun named Mary Jane? Subtle drug reference?
-
I want some more classic Filmation stuff. Pretty Please.
-
I knew that too! It's our geek fate of lifeas for Bravestraa, how many seasons did that show last? I only remember 1 season and it being extremly bizare
-
Thomas has states he wants to do them, but on the previous sets they had no time. I don't believe that, but obviously this year, when they did two less episodes, and have no rush to release a DVD set, they had time, yet there are none. Yes, the introductions for the deleted scenes will be nice, but to not have commentaries, especially on a season with major changes, both creatively and cast-wise, and when it is cancelled, and when you have admitted you had plotlines and mysteries you didn't get to do (the third mystery involving Wallace and Mac), it's really pretty lazy to not at least have one commentary on the set. Disappointed.
-
There was no FBI pilot filmed. There was a "promo" for it, probably running 5 minutes long or so, but no full-length pilot was ever done. Regardless, that 5-minute, or however long promotional FBI pitch Thomas showed the CW IS on the set.
-
I remember as a kid loving Gummi Bears and Ducktales (Disney Afternoon), but also Peter Pan and the Pirates was awesome too (not to mention Batman in later years). Are these cartoons any good, or is it just because I was high on a Capri Sun and Goldfish?
-
(Sold to syndication, successfully at that, as Black Sheep Squadron.)
Quoteth Herc: "One wonders what inspired Cannell and NBC to mount the 'Black Sheep,' which was It lasted only 37 episodes; it hit the network grid two years after Nixon’s resignation (and four months after the release of 'All The President’s Men'), when the nation wasn’t in a particularly patriotic mood." People not in a patriotic mood? In 1976?? The Bicentennial??? Surely you jest!?!?! -
I've waited a long time for this miniseries to come out on DVD. But fuck Black Sheep Squadron, though. Aside from the dogfights, the show was shit, and a slap in the face to the real Black Sheep.
-
Ducktales rocked (along with Darkwing Duck) gummi Bears, not as much. Batman of course on Fox Kids Afternoon was great. Can't say I remember Peter Pan and the Pirates though
-
Still waiting for Cheers season 9. I wonder why the hell they just suddenly stopped. Only three seasons left. ARGH!!!
-
One of my specialty channels jsut started airing it in syndication, and I think this show is warranted for a DVD release. It fucking even had Art Vandelay as a character on it.
-
If they can release Bravestar and Batfink, they can move up to the "C's" and release these two classics - gotta get me some Eustace and Red Guy laffs!
-
But it was selling at Costco for $23 bucks and had a free ticket to the movie, so I though it'd be worth having for the handful of quality eps scattered about. What year did Brad Bird leave the series? I think *that's* what killed the show.
-
Was worth it if simply because it had John Laroquette before he was on Night Court. :)
-
Besides tomorrow being 7/7/7, it is also the hundredth anniversary of Robert A. Heinlein's birth. I'm glad there is a more faithful adaptation of his STARSHIP TROOPERS. I ordered the set. There may be some newspaper articles tomorrow about the contribution he made to Science Fiction. BTW, the tribbles from Classic Trek were a direct rip off /homage (depending on pov) of his 'flat cats' from the novel THE ROLLING STONES. Since he was an Annapolis grad and always supported our armed forces, a campaign is afoot to name the very first futuristic Zumwalt Class destroyer The USS Robert A Heinlein. Hopefully, they will make it so. Another good tribute would be for some progress to be made on the MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS movie adaptation. TNSTAAFL
But he paid his dues.
