SciFi: Queen Theme NOT Part Of New FLASH GORDON!!
I am – Hercules!!
Though the SciFi Channel is using Queen’s 1980 Flash Gordon theme in its promos for its new “Flash Gordon” series, SciFi exec Mark Stern says we should not expect to hear the theme in the actual series.
From a Friday SciFi Wire report:
The 1980 movie, directed by Mike Hodges and starring Sam Jones, has achieved a kind of cult status because of its campy style and a memorable soundtrack by Queen. A cover version of that music could be heard in a recent promotional spot for the new series on SCI FI. Stern confirmed that the theme would be used in the marketing campaign for the series, but not in the actual show.
"[We're] looking at updating the Queen song just a bit," he said. "So it's definitely the Queen song we all know and love, with a little something extra. Because it is about communicating the fact that it's not the '70s Sam Jones movie with people in spandex and everything we love about that movie. The show is not that campy. But how do you not use that music? It's so wonderful. So we're trying to have a little of both, to have our cake and eat it, in that regard. But I don't believe the music is actually going to be in the series itself."
The new “Flash Gordon” series, overseen by writer-producer Peter Hume (“Charmed,” Jennifer Lopez’s “South Beach”), debuts on SciFi in August.

That's the nail in the coffin. FLASH! Ahhh-Ahhhhhhhhh
-
This looks so bad - but I could be wrong
-
Damn, the song ruled. Ah ah!
-
why the hell not??
-
use the Queen theme again, next thing you know we have a Timothy Dalton revival and guess who will want his old job as Bond back.
-
I applaud not making the show as campy as the movie. The movie is silly beyond words. But you HAVE to keep the song as the theme song. It's iconic at this point.
-
The only redeemable part of the 1980 movie was the soundtrack. Also, the statement that "The show is not that campy," doesn't encourage. "Slightly less campy" seems to be what the author is saying. What, the spandex now blended with natural fabrics?
-
Why must they toy with my emotions! The old bait and switch tactic! Wonder how much they are going to "update it" maybe get one of the American Idols winners to sing it.
-
Why don't these assholes stop trying to rehash old shit and bring back something that worked - FARSCAPE!
*sigh* Morons... -
That photo looks like it could come right off an episode of Farscape, Just take out Flash and put John C.
That said, I will watch it anyway.
-
nicer sets/costumes/actors instead of music royalties.
-
And Whitlet can't act ...
But, we'll see, maybe will be surpised. -
Maybe it'll be fun.
-
Honestly, if it wasn't for Doctor Who, I wouldn't tune in to SciFi Channel at all. With SG1 (the last of the 'old guard' shows) gone, there just isn't anything left worth watching. Atlantis just doesn't cut it for me and Battlestar has sucked ever since early in Season Two (and gotten worse since...as the ratings prove). And don't get me started on their decision to replace the original Star Trek with a regular mega-block of Enterprise (trying to figure that out is like trying to figure out the logic behind Mondale's old "I'm going to raise your taxes" election strategy). So forgive me if I'm leary about anything that comes from SciFi Channel.
-
what's the point of a not-so-campy version of flash gordon anyway? when the sci-fi channel tries to do serious and gritty, it almost always looks like shit. with their budget, campy would be easier to pull off.
-
But nix Queen's "Flash Gordon"?
-
Jackasses.
-
What are they playing at? That tune IS fucking Flash Gordon. Mother fuckers.
-
This is complete crap. I think the show would be fine without the theme, but why in God's name would they use it in the commercials and not the show? That is wrong, plain wrong.
-
Yup!
-
Then again maybe I'll win the lottery settle old scores and buy an exotic island in the carribbean.
-
I watched that trailer like 20 times straight just for the tune.
-
Honestly, that show was good and all, but the opening music is what got ya jazzed for it, even if the episode sucked, or the Dr.Bracco scenes dragged on, at least you had the the theme music. KEEP IT!!!
-
But then why use it at all? Don't use any of it. People won't even notice it's not there....unless you do what they've done here and then people will not only notice they'll prefer the original.
-
Hit the nail on the head there. What is the thinking. It is synonymous with Flash Gordon. We all love it. It would be a great intro... But no. This show will be a shameful waste of a fun idea. Hate to be negative, but c'mon.
-
So they publish a photo of a guy with an exposed brain torturing some guy on a weird dentist's chair --- and at the same time they talk about making the show "not that campy"??? I really hope this show gets a certain amount of unintentional entertainment value.
-
One more strike against this stuff, then.
-
Queen theme=glimmer of hope.No Queen=all hope is lost.
-
When the opening credits start up, you can mute your TV and turn on the Queen song on your stereo. TA DAH! Can Sci Fi please just order a sixth season of BSG instead? I'd be shocked if this doesn't tank. I don't know how they think they can do it without being really campy; they should just embrace the camp.
-
Yes, because without it, the far superior movie serials from the '30s and '40s would have totally sucked, right? Look, while I'm going to withhold judgment on the series until I actually see an episode, as far as I'm concerned, not using the Queen song would be a step in the right direction. Flash Gordon should have the tone of the first Star Wars (Episode IV, that is), not...well...the 1980 Flash Gordon movie.
-
Am I wrong?
-
HOW RUDE!!!!!!!!!!
-
...at least do a remix utilizing Freddy's vocals and Brian's guitar. Dont' just get some bullshit emo band to re-record it.
-
Any attempts to deny that will doom the series for certain.
-
...meant the show was gonna suck, but I looked over and Kurt Russell was laughing pretty hard, so I guess it was okay.
-
Totally agree. It's like remaking Nil By Mouth as a musical with puppets.
-
off to war, and get killed without giving him any nookie. Whatabitch.
-
Spot.
On.
Bloody Bastards... -
God, I miss the queen theme song.
-
evil muppets
-
Plus, he better be a friggin' Jets QB still! We're not asking for much SCI FI!
-
a poor mans aurora chair and a veritable beggars scorpius. Should be a really great show ...
-
And have rockets/space ships. And set the series on Mongo. And feature our favorite characters including Klytus and Kala!
-
Who's more clueless, the Bush Administration or the Sci Fi channel?
Right now, it's pretty much a dead heat with the same 26% approval rating.
-
Don't fuck this up, Sci-Fi Channel. USE THE SONG.
-
in his films, so too should SciFi use Queen's. It's a beloved and respectful nod to what came before, yet — used correctly — does NOT have to mimic what was done in the past. It's simply a uber-cool connection that would thrill old-schoolers and new fans alike, and let everyone know that Flash Gordon has returned.Of course, using it makes too much sense, so SciFi rejected the idea. They probably would've dumped James Bond's theme song and the telescopic sight shot from the new 007 series, as well.
-
Instead of the Nordic-looking John Ralston, couldn't they have cast an actor of real Asian lineage and subtly alter him -- give him blue contact lenses and makeup that will change his naturally amber skin tone?
-
Because that would be racial-profiling....or some equally asinine politically-correct drivel...
-
I boycotted the new battlestar galactica. It's been fun. So yeah, just buy the Saviour of the Universe Edition DVD.
-
OK where to start in THIS mess? Total clusterfuck so far. Why? Im glad you asked... (ok you didnt - but ur getting it anyway)
1.) Our hero - Witless from Smallville. A guy best known for playing, essentially a big pussy who then goes and joins the military. Not to mention his stringbean physique and anyone else think he's aging a tad ungracefully? I mean - the guy looks like a 45 yr old cokehead.
2.) Dale arden - YAWN. 'nuff said. How THAT chick is going to compete with Ming's daughter I dont know.
3.) Where is mings daughter ? they SHOULD get ornella muti's equally hot daughter to play her.
4.) The song - for fuck sake - give us the themes. Some things cross over from camp. Some franchises (superman and star wars spring to mind) simply arent the same without them - even if the material that comes after isnt the same. Let's face it sci-fi 90% of the people who watch your network who have ever heard of Flash Gordon did so primarily through that film. Using the theme is a geat way to tip the cap to what has come before and hook a few folks.
5.) Budget - good lord this thing looks like its being filmed in someone's garage. Every room is dark with like 3 props in it. UGH
6. Lastly - and this is a big one for me... MING is essentially an asian character. Conceived, designed as, and always personified as. Jesus. And no, its not racist to make the bad guy asian, thats just how he was modeled. Unlike most depicitions of asians during the era and subsequent 2 decades after he was invented, Ming was portrayed as an intelligent, cunning and worthy adversary to Flash. This blonde guy? He looks too much like Leader Desslok for my tastes. (and yeah bonus points if you know who leader desslok is).
Sigh - Im gonna watch the pilot. And maybe one episode after - but the spaceships and effects better be decent or im just not investing any more time in this. -
whoever wanted him to be a Jets QB like in the movie... even if he is.. the Jets SUCK.
Just
End
The
Season
'nuff said. -
Or do I want Blu-Ray?
-
I loved that show. Wildstar, Venture, Prince Zordar, Trelaina; that was Japanimation at its best.
-
not even "a little something extra". I don't even like Queen, and I know this
-
the maker of Charmed chould not be accused of making anything campy But seriously, if you're interested, watch the show and see. If not, don't. But maybe, just maybe, wait until you see it to render an opinion for or against. It's summer...chill.
-
for a reason to give this a chance. Why must everything be re-invented? They have plenty of material here to pull from/ I see no logic in going all flaming Optimus Bat nipples with it.Ain't broke, why fix it?As a side note, I 100% agree with Punto...You don't "update" Queen, just leave it the hell alone. I certainly don't see Sci-Fi's track record of destroying everything they touch being broken with this one (they still have to make up for Mystery Science Theater in my mind).
-
The Flash Gordon movie came out in 1980. Filmation's excellent cartoon adaptation of FG came out in 1979. If they are not using Queen's theme, I think 1986's Flash Gordon: Defenders of the Earth will be better. Also, what pisses me off is the hypocrisy of not keeping Ming's vaguely 'Asian' features... What because Ming is a baddie it's not right? Oh, but all Vulcans can look vaguely 'Asian' because they're good guys?
-
Don't nobody go dissin' Galactica's cover of All Along the Watchtower. That shit was fucking epic. I still regularly watch the last five minutes of the finale for my hit --- Having said that, Flash Gordon was around for half a century before Queen showed up, and although I love the song, it's not like it's obligatory. In fact I'd prefer they not use it. But this halfway thing is ass. Either do it or don't. (Except if they get Bear McCreary to do the cover, in which case hell yeah.) --- And P.S. honestly, if they were all so jizzing for Flash Gordon, why not bring back Farscape? The damn thing was practically Flash-Gordon-except-for-the-name anyway, and was orders of magnitude more brilliant than this probably will be.
-
The only way I'd ever watch even a minute of this new "Flash Gordon" was if the orginal music was part of it.
Oh, it's not? Really? I'll be passing on the show, then. I'm sure Flash will do just fine... for about three episodes. And then it'll degenerate into utter stupidity and audiences will turn their backs on it.
I'm not usually this cynical about science fiction shows, but this clusterfuck of half-assed and no-assed talent is making me shake my head in disgust. Whatever. I'll still be riveted to "Battlestar Galactica." -
... of worm-infested Bantha turd. It's just another of those channels like TLC, Discovery, TNT, Hi(tler)story Channel that shows the same fuckin' three shows over and over and over in marathon blocks. Jesus Poledancing Christ, I know more about crabfishing now than anyone outside of a crabfisherman should know, since Discovery has been playing this same series incessantly since, apparently, the Roosevelt Administration (and I mean Teddy Roosevelt!)
-
Fucking blasphemy. Queen ARE Flash Gordon, dammit!!!
-
One can only hope!
I hope the show is good. -
why so many people are upset about the song.
Cool song....for an 80's movie. I bet the creator and writer of the show didn't even have a choice in the use of the commercial music. -
You come off like a member of the master race, mocking those little swarthy people and their delusions of grandeur. People on this site should understand that racial issues are woefully beyond the scope of comprehension of 95% of you. Don't take every role not cast as white in 2007 as some personal attack. If you can't handle it, there's about 50+ years of completely whitewashed entertainment you can fall back on.
-
DESSLOK!, Desslok!, Desslok! DESSLOK!, Desslok!, Desslok! DESSLOK!, Desslok!, Desslok! DESSLOK!, Desslok!, Desslok! DESSLOK!, Desslok!, Desslok! He was the best thing about the Star Blazers TV show, and really deserved his own spin-off.
