Another Deleted KNOCKED UP Scene Shows Up Online!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here. I dig what Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are trying to do with their website Funny Or Die. I know they made a big splash with the Pearl videos, “The Landlord” and “Good Cop Baby Cop,” which you can see here: Good Cop, Baby Cop But they also provide a place for people to post their own videos that other people can rank, and they provide a place where folks like Judd Apatow can post outtakes and deleted footage. You remember that blisteringly dirty BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN riff by Jonah Hill that we ran a week or two ago? Well, that’s just one of the many deleted moments from KNOCKED UP, and today, they posted another one, a much longer version of a scene that’s in the movie. One of the strangest arguments I’ve heard against KNOCKED UP is that the film is pro-life propaganda, and that they completely left any discussion of abortion out of the movie. That’s not true even in the final cut, where there are at least three scenes that make some sort of reference to the idea of wrestling with the choice, but in this extended sequence, you’ll see just how profound that conversation gets when Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, and Jason Segel are involved. And of course, this is not safe for work. Not remotely. Knocked Up’s Thoughtful Abortion Debate

    I heart Pearl

    by Quint

Pearl is a superstar and funnier than sin. "Where's my rent, bitch!" "I'm gonna go get my drink on..." Can I marry her in 17.5 years?

  • June 28, 2007, 6:34 a.m. CST

    Quint, you pedophile!

    by Horace Cox

Jesus dude, what is she, like 4 years old? Oh wait, you said you'd wait 17.5 years. You're good bro. I had a girlfirend who accused me of being a pedophile once. I said "C'mon now! That's an awfully big word for a twelve year old to be throwing around."

    by Garbageman33

Pearl's delivery of that line is better than 98% of the actresses in Hollywood could've done. I already think she'd make a better MJ than Kirsten Dunst. Not when she's in her 20s. Now.

pearl was funny the first time, and by the end of the second one i was happy to read about pearl's "retirement". talk about a one-trick pony. and how the hell is knocked up pro-life propaganda? just because one scene where one guy says "no!" makes this propaganda? then fine, where are the cries of 40 year old virgin being religious propaganda to promote abstinence until marriage? that's fuckin ridiculous is what it is.

Because the 3 deleted scenes I've seen so far online are just as if not funnier then some of the scenes that were in that movie. Or maybe they will just add them back in for an extended cut. The crown still goes the Brokeback scene. Funniest shit ever.

Jonah Hill is the motherfucking man

    by Garbageman33

I love how he can say the most ridiculous things with a totally straight face. Or better yet, with a look of grave concern. Like when he was in the hospital waiting room, freaked out that some zombies were gonna stroll out and cough malaria on him. Oh, and I wish Martin Starr was given more to do in the movie than grow funny facial hair. I've been catching up on some Freaks and Geeks and that kid has got some comedy chops too.

While I think it is silly to call Knocked Up pro-life propaganda, the film is dripping with Judeo-Christian values. This is all well and good, I guess, but it did feel a little weird. In the real world, abortion would be a very real option for someone like the Katherine Heigel character, while in the film she seems to dismiss the idea without any debate.

  • June 28, 2007, 11:37 a.m. CST

    Pro-Life Propaganda??!?

    by ShiftyEyedDog2

I don't know what kind of freaks you've been talking with, but I haven't heard that argument anywhere.

Just because ONE couple decides to have a baby, and this movie is about that couple, it's propaganda? So was Revenge of the Sith propaganda because Padme kept her babies? Was Superman Returns pro-life propaganda because Lois hadn't aborted her bastard super-child?

  • June 28, 2007, 12:02 p.m. CST

    Jesus Christ...

    by seanny_d

the movie is called KNOCKED UP. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to go see the movie where Allison gets pregnant, calls up Ben and goes "Hey, you got me pregnant but I got an abortion so it's all good, bye!" No. It's entirely plausible that she just doesn't BELIEVE in abortion. There are people out there who are like that, regardless of what some people think about. And if anything, they didn't take that route at all. People mention abortion but she doesn't lecture them about the evils of it, she says "No, it's not for me." Isn't that the whole POINT of the pro-choice debate is that people are able to make their own choices?

  • June 28, 2007, 12:11 p.m. CST

    by Nuck81

Or maybe she just didn't want to get an abortion? It is possible to have an unwanted pregnancy and STILL have the baby without being some tongue spouting, snake handling, Jesus freak

It was jason Regal's eric character, not Jonah Hill (although he would have been great in Undeclared. I watch my DVDs of it on a weekly basis. "This beer is good. It kinda tastes like orange juice." "Yeah, you're drinking it out of an orange juice carton, so...". Brilliant.

    by Nozoli Apples

I wish they hadn't cut extremely funny bits like this and the Brokeback scene. I think the argument for this being pro-life isn't that she chose to have the child but instead because they used phrases in the movie like "just take care of it" and "she decided to have it taken care of and now she has a "real" child", to me, hearing dialog like that from a character would make me not want to believe anything they say because it simply isn't as eloquent or human as Heigl's character got to state her case. I don't care because the movie rocked, but it really only pretended to give voice to both sides.

    by DanielKurland

He deserves to star in Apatow's next. He's writing and starring in a new romantic comedy with Kristen Bell though, which should suffice. But his stuff on Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and How I Met Your Mother is so, so hilarious.

    by angry kitty

I hope not. talk about some extremely messed up parenting from the Ferrel clan. I'm guessing its things like "bits" or something. Anybody know for sure?

  • June 28, 2007, 4:51 p.m. CST

No, Pearl isn't really saying that shit

    by Garbageman33

In fact, Pearl doesn't even exist. It's all CGI. I mean, it's not like you could just feed a two-year-old lines and have her repeat them. That'd never work.

  • June 28, 2007, 5:13 p.m. CST

But this was not the final cut

    by Messyjoe

I was really surprised how little is said about abortion. Realistically a successful babe like this getting knocked up by a useless lout like this, would run not walk for the nearest abortion clinic, end of story, and no movie. The very casual way she dismisses the idea (career, future factors all ignored) is highly unrealistic. But then we wouldnt have a movie. I actually looked for some pro-life group as the source for the production funds in the credits.

  • June 28, 2007, 5:16 p.m. CST

    Talk about "reaching". Good

    by JediWuddayaknow

Talk about "reaching". Good lord, Pro-life propaganda? Do these people want EVERY movie about a pregnancy to end in abortion? The topic was discussed in the movie and she CHOSE to keep the baby. The pro-choice agenda apparently only applies to THEIR choice.

they walked a very tricky line

    by occula

i myself was waiting to find out how they did it, because i was ready to call bullshit. but i believe apatow did his research. the moment she made her decision not to have an abortion was the moment she saw the ultrasound and started crying. a lot of women make the abortion decision without having had the luxury (or complication, one could argue) of an ultrasound. seeing something concrete can be very different from just wrestling with an abstraction. so, i get it. again, they had to have a reason to hang the whole thing on, but it would have been really great if this scene had been left in juuuust to flesh the whole thing out a little. fucking jonah hill is belushi-grade funny.

Ferrell repeatedly says that Inappropriate Behavior....

    by Joey_Redballs

Will Ferrell is repeatedly being quoted in interviews that he finds horribly inappropriate behavior and yelling at children to be very funny. And...that's the kind of stuff he and Adam Sandler are often doing for laughs. I think the Pearl videos are funny. There's only 2 of them, right? Also, I PRAY TO GOD that they release both the theatrical edition and "unrated" extended edition of KNOCKED UP on the same DVD set. With THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRIGIN, they distributed mostly Unrated DVDs for sale. The director himself said in a newspaper article that he didn't get censored on the movie, and the DVD was just an extended cut. The Unrated 40-Year-Old Virgin DVD was fun to watch once with more jokes, but one alternate take ruined a joke's punchline...and let's not forget about the extended dance number at the end. It made the movie's ending hard to watch and almost never-ending...reminiscent of LOTR: Return of the King...also known as the movie with 8 endings. And most of the R-rated DVDs of 40YOV were Full Screen. Why?...I don't know. I found it damn near impossible to find the original cut of 40-Year-Old Virgin in Widescreen. They should take a note from The Wedding Crashers "Uncorked Edition" DVD where they included BOTH versions of the movie, unrated and theatrical. I'm not even trying to say that's a better movie cuz it's not. It was just a much better way to present the movie on DVD. I don't think most directors have anything to do with their own "unrated" DVD. Otherwise it would say "Director's Cut" not "Unrated" which really just means they didn't pay the MPAA again to rate the extended version. I'm kind of sick of the "unrated" DVD craze. If you're gonna extend scenes or use alternate takes, please include BOTH versions of the movie for my picky ass.

    by plastroncafe

I saw anyone make this connection was on a feminist blog. So I went to the movie expecting not to see ANY mention of abortion at all. Imagine my surprise when I saw the main female protagonist make a choice not to have an abortion. She considered it and decided it wasn't for her. She didn't pontificate about how it wasn't right for everyone, just her. I don't know what the chicks on that blog were smoking, but clearly they weren't watching the same movie as I was.

    Pro Life Liberal...

    by Tourist

Is an oxymoron. I really can't speak to Apatows ethical stance on the matter, but as far as storytelling goes, her aborting the baby would leave the narrative on some pretty shaky footing, and probally be a bit of a bummer for a date flick.

  • June 29, 2007, 12:41 p.m. CST

    by Orionsangels

Because Anchorman has memorable moments and lines. Too many to count. Almost every line is classic. So many people quote that movie. That's when you know its a good comedy. Nobodies gonna quote this lame Knocked up movie. I can barely remember any scenes as it is. It was just some fat guy buying baby clothes. That's not comedy. Plus any movie that ends with a child birth scene is a cheeseball movie.

How can anyone who is conservative, with a straight face, say that being a pro life liberal is an oxymoron, when they are pro war at the same time? They only want the POTENTIAL life to be saved, the life thats already HERE, FUCK THEM. No health care, give thier money to the rich, fuck the immigrants, fuck the minorities, fuck the environment, I hate to be so blunt.. but im so sick of the conservativs claiming to be the "party of God" while they are the liars, and the cheats, and the ones filled with HATE. I dont see God when I see conservatives, I see the Pharisees and the Sadusees, claiming righteousness and instead being full of hypocricy.
