SciFi Wises Up!! Queen’s 1980 FLASH GORDON Theme Graces 2007 Series Teaser!!

Published at:  Jun 28, 2007 1:32:49 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Apparently SciFi launched last weekend a 10-second teaser promoting its new “Flash Gordon” series, which bows in August. No footage from the show was utilized, but something rather cooler was.

One can hear a tiny yet unmistakable snippet of Queen’s “Flash Gordon” theme, for my money the best part of the 1980 Sam Jones movie. (It kinda sounded like a cover version, but I’ll leave that to the experts to debate.)

Of course, just because they use it in the promos doesn’t mean it’ll actually serve as a component of the series itself. Remember how UPN used The Calling’s “Wherever You Will Go” in all its first-season “Enterprise” promos, only to bait-and-switch into Diane Warren’s supershitty “Faith of the Heart” as the show’s actual title theme?

The Queen-y promo is now online. Want to sit through a 30-second Listerine or Esurance commercial to hear all 10 seconds of the promo for yourself? Click here!!

(Thanks to “RoboGeek” for the heads-up!)

SO CLOSE TO FIRST, gosh darned it. Any hoo, yeah, didn't sound perfect, but still cool. As for the teaser, it was so freakin short! The show's only 2 months-ish away... They could show more!

Oh Lord please please please let the showrunners recognize their low budget, cheap-ass sets, stupid premise, crappy make-up, crappy everything and as a result make it CAMPY. That's about the only way this show is not going to suck...

    That's pretty damned funny...

    by roguewriter

...and it made me drag out the old album again. It has moments of extreme cheese, but some of the driving instrumentals kick major ass. One of my favorite LPs as a kid. I'm definitely up for the new series; we'll see if it turns out better than your average Sci-Fi Channel offering (and they've ONLY been getting better lately... PAINKILLER JANE notwithstanding). Flash is an iconic hero of olde; we'll just see if the budget allows for BSG-quality FX. Hope so.

    by telf

Yup Parin is in it. But he's a generation older than Flash, and is kind of like Theoden in LOTR. They make a character out of his daughter who is a spunky, sexy, possibly bisexual tough girl. Unfortunately it sounds way better than it reads. I was really let down by some of the choices in the pilot script.

    I don't know...

    by spank

The movie's biggest "flaws" were the either over acting (actually part of it's "charm"- acting SO bad it's GREAT)- or just plain not acting at all. I'm hoping they'll have enough sense to go back to the original source material, slightly update it, rewrite it so it flows better, but keep the elegance and charm that Raymond (MUCH more a visualist than a writer), had in it. One of the few things I love about the film is you get to see a LOT of Raymond's look and feel from his original work- but from the stills I've seen with this series that's far from the case.

The snipet "teaser" song sounds like the original sunk through a synthisizer btw, probably sets the tone for the whole series (again NOT filling me with a lot of confidence).

Finally, the new logo completely BLOWS, nothing wrong with using the original stylish one from the strip unless they're really pulling away from that and just "updating" the movie. But again, if you WANT folks to think Battlestar Galactica more than the original work- they did their job well.

    So far- not so good.

I think they just messed with it. Unless they got somebody who sounds just like Freddie, like that dude who toured with Journey. Anywho, I love the movie. It's my #12 all-time favorite. I don't expect much from SciFi. I've never been one for their programming, but I'm sure it'll find an audience. I'll probably watch half the pilot and hate it.

Wait a second. I just checked what the dude playing Flash looks like. Ew. There's no way. I can't even believe he was teenage Tristan Ludlow. And he hadn't even seen the old movie before he was cast?Oh, forget that. See I didn't even have to watch any of the pilot. I already hate it. Dale's pretty though.

Sound quality, folks. If you are the official source for a teaser or trailer or fucking commercial, please remember that you look like a moron if your official teaser site sounds like Soundwave's illegitimate baby being drowned in a paint bucket of water. I happen to like the Queen song, but not when it's being played, seemingly, for the benefit of cetaceans. I really think he deserves a special Oscar for "Most Scenery Digested by One Actor" - reference Ming (Flash), Fargo (Dredd), Gaunt (Needful Things), Kynes (Dune), and last but best, King "What Arrogance! A good move? Gotta disagree. The movie was a *parody* of Flash Gordon. The theme was fun and catchy, but it's part and parcel of the parody. Any decent version of Flash Gordon should stay miles away from it, and from anything else connected with that movie. What I'd like to see is a show that tries to capture the spirit of the *original serials* but with modern production values, not a retread of a 1980s comedy.

Excellent in everything...no question. The Exorcist, Victory, Dreamscape, Conan, Citizen X, etc.And is it just me or is Dreamscape ripe for a remake? I usually gripe about 'remakes gone berserk' but Dreamscape was a fun movie with a great concept suffering from bad effects.

DC Comics is so going to sue over the FLASH GORDON logo

    by spyguy

The "o" in Gordon is an exact copy of the DC Comics's Flash logo used by their Barry Allen, Wally West and (until last week) Bart Allen characters. Plus, it's been merchandised out on t-shirts, stuff from the old Warner Bros. stores (*Sniff* I still miss 'em) and DC Direct products. Expect a logo change before August.

Also, I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one pissed off that The Calling's "Wherever You Will Go" was dumped for that piece of shit "Faith of the Heart" from a fully-loaded baby diaper. The Berman and Braga couldn't even get their fucking theme song right, so you knew the series was ultimately doomed to fail as well.

Why is anyone talking Enterprise here??

    by picardsucks

Star Trek without Kirk or Spock (or Sisko) is not Star Trek and sucks hard. Enterprise, Voyager and 99% of TNG sucked hard. Flash Gordon 1980 fucking awesome , could watch it once a month and be happy. Max Von Sydow - Perfect Villian!!! Brian Blessed - Perfect Superhero!!! Queen soundtrack might be the coolest music ever produced for a sci fi movie. White,Non threatening politically correct Ming is both lame and gay. Flash without the Queen theme also quite lame.

    by harry weinstein

That sounded more like one of those songs that's supposed to sound like something famous, but they changed enough notes so they don't get sued. The best remix of the FLASH GORDON theme is the one by Mr. Lawnge from the Black Sheep. And of course, it would be remiss not to mention Public Enemy's "Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic".

While we're careening way off topic here, I just want to say that I think von Sydow should have been considered for the post-Harris Dumbledore. Not that I don't like Gough, but so many times in Mr. von Sydow's performances I've seen both the twinkle in his eye and the towering presence JKR ascribes to DD. Ah well, maybe we can hold out hope for a cameo as Ming Sr. in the new series.

If Bonnie Hammer is still running the show, then SciFi is just as brain-dead as it has been for the past ten years or so. From another message board; one person asked when he found out about the S60 DVD which will be coming out in October (?) what the commentary from Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme would be. Here's another's novel reply:

SORKIN:BOW BEFORE ME YOU IGNORANT KNAVES FOR I AM YOUR GOD!!!

SCHLAMME: Thank Christ I only directed the first two episodes and one of the later ones. I get to leave with my reputation intact.

SORKIN: COME ON! SKETCHES THAT AREN'T FUNNY AND CRAM POINTS DOWN YOUR THROAT ARE WHAT AMERICA NEEDS TO HEAR, EVEN IF IT'S NOT WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR! I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE *takes hit of crack* THE LIGHT MOTHERF*CKERS!

SCHLAMME: Maybe Marc Cherry needs somebody. His show is basically a "Home for Lost Writers /Directors" as it is...

SORKIN: AND OF COURSE YOU PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHAT ROMANCE IS! AFTER ALL, ISN'T STALKING A WOMAN AND THEN HAVING HER INEXPLICABLY DECIDE TO BECOME YOUR GIRLFRIEND/FIANCEE ROMANCE? ISN'T BEING A TURD TO YOUR EX, AND CONSTANTLY WRITING THE CHARACTER WHO IS BASED ON YOUR REAL LIFE EX AS DUMB AS DIRT, THE ONLY ROMANTIC THING TO DO? YOU'VE ALL GOTTEN CYNICAL!

SCHLAMME: Damn Judd Hirsch had the right idea: Get out in the first five minutes.

SORKIN: BE RIGHT BACK. I'M OFF TO STAND IN THE MIDDLE OF AFGHANISTAN!

    Me: Yikes... :D

    by picardsucks

If you have a region free dvd player. There is an excellent remastered special ed, anamorphic version of Flash that has been out for about two years. i believe it is only available in the UK, Amazon UK has it. It is a very sharp print and has Brian Blessed commentary and yes he sounds exactly like you would expect Brian Blessed to sound. For those interested there are many sites that have codes to program your dvd player to play region free.

I also think the Queen song and the movie are the equivalent to the 60's Batman series, but the more I hear about this series the more it sounds like it won't even be the breath of fresh air that the 89 Batman movie was at the time (even though we needed a new breath of fresh air from that not 20 years later). The sad thing is that most of the Talkbackers and Herc are only interested in this if it has the Queen song. That's all that anyone has talked about for this fucking series, except maybe to briefly acknowledge how shitty a blonde Ming and Earth-bound setting are.

It has some of the shittiest FX ever seen in a movie. Cmon, the hawkmen flying, getting picked off in the air. It looked cool when I was 4 or 5 or whenever the hell it premiered but the film just doesn't stand the test of time like it should have being the influence for Star Wars. I will admit, Queen's song was pretty good and is actually better than the movie if you can believe that.

I Love This Movie. High camp at its best. Glorious costumes. Bad Acting. Opreratic score. Art direction on acid. Silly. Pulp. Brash. Innocent. It's not the fuckin Matrix people. God knows if they did remake it ...it would be filled with anguished, brooding leather-clad, goth rockers wearing sunglasses and doing spin kicks to NIN backing tracks. But hey...Im biased. I saw it when I was 11 and it spun my imagination around like half a dozen other movies did in that era (Tron, The Thing, Raiders etc.) It's simply burned into my brain. Like the old Batman & Robin TV show...it's all ridiculous camp, but when your 7-8 yrs old...that's heavy fucking DRAMA! It's definetly a unique film. I read one critic called it "strangely entertaining"...that about sums it up.

Not all of the acting in the 80s movie was bad. Sure Jones and Anderson were bad as the leads, but Max Von Sydow, Brian Blessed, Ornella Muti, Topol and Timothy Dalton were all very good in their roles, and delivered their lines with gusto! And nobody can kick over a tripod like Dalton!

I hate it when they go out of their way to buy the rights to a song to use in an ad or movie or tv show and then just do a hack cover of it. If Sci-Fi is smart they'll just use the original. Besides Queen is just one of those bands you just don't cover, like the Beatles or Pink Floyd it just don't work out well.
