Cronenberg's EASTERN PROMISES Trailer Can Now Be Seen In Glorious QuickTime!! Hear Viggo's Russian Accent!!
Merrick here...
Yahoo has posted a trailer for David Cronenberg's EASTERN PROMISES, which reunites him with HISTORY OF VIOLENCE alums Viggo Mortensen, composer Howard Shore, cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, along with Naomi Watts.
While I don't end up loving every film he makes, Cronenberg is always an interesting director & so far I'm intrigued by everything I've heard about this film.

I'm surprised.
-
Wow, I think this is the first time in ten years I've ever been first.
That trailer looked good. Intense, oddly angled Viggo hair adds quiet menace to his character. Russian mafia movies should be made more often. Especially by Cronenberg. -
was so so a fan of AHOV but im looking forward to this
-
Go Viggo! The accent's good enough.
-
here we go...
-
History of Violence was ace, Cronenberg shouldn't disappoint here.
-
with Yahoo! clips? Granted my computer is powered by a mouse on a wheel, but I can see trailers everywhere else. And Viggo looks so nice glowy too. *sigh*
-
the yahoo site sucks...i have the same problem...everywhere else fine...yahoo balls
-
Viggo and Cronenberg are the god damn mother fucking shit together.
-
I love David Cronenberg, and this looks like it's going to be a worthy follow-up to A History Of Violence.
-
Looking ahead to this one.
-
Or are they gonna be hairy? And sweaty? I mean surely he will start to sweat during that fight, right?
-
Crash, and Naked Lunch, also fantastic. Haven't hated any Cronenberg besides Fast Company, which really had no business being made at all, let alone by someone like Cronenberg.
-
during Christmas. I was going to comment on the slight Eyes Wide Shut kind of vibe it was giving off, and with them both taking place on Christmas, it'll be fun holiday watching in the future.
-
You know, like Dolph Lundgren or someone.
-
great trailer...nice and long, but doesn't really give too much away. not goin to watch it again though. don't want any hints. can cassell pull off a russian accent, though? his english is good, but russian is a tough accent to do for non-native english speakers. hard for a native english speaker, actually. it's easy to degenerate into a NY jewish grandma accent. man, I'm excited for this one.
-
I don't know what the hell this is supposed to be...
-
His russian was great.
Fucking Yahoo player is the worst. I'll wait untill it pops up on youtube. -
Why does Crash get so much praise? I want to know, b/c in real life having a sexual experience and crashing a car isn't all that fun... but then again I'm no Cronenberg.
-
Looks nice and edgy, extremely promising; got my ticket money.
-
Mortensen needs an Oscar, STAT!
-
utilize the exposure, so to speak. While his subject matter isn't always the most accessible, he presents it with true artistic merit, whatever the fuck that means. I prefer that to whatever the major studios are producing nowadays. Keep it up and if this does well, unleash another j.g.ballard/william s. burroughs/h.p.lovecraft kind of adaptation upon the unsuspecting public. Glass jar to the temple kind of thing.
-
Is in the works, and will star Hannah Montana and feature mutant CGI children. Directed by horror master Tim Story.
-
And personally, I'm glad that over the last decade Cronenberg has shifted his considerable skills as a storyteller away from body horror. I never liked horror flicks, but loved the bits of his early films that I could watch without hiding behind my hands. I reckon he's going to go from strength to strength over the next 10 years, and that we'll see an oscar nod or two for him before very long.
-
the urge to make a Yakov Smirnov joke...Looks great, Viggo's accent sounds pretty solid. I wonder if he speaks Russian in the film at any point
-
stooooop iiiiiiiit!, First you want to violate howard the duck, and now cronenberg remakes. I may cry, as there is a far too high probability that it will get done.
-
Fook!! Yay, more Viggo!
-
Cronenberg gets less Cronenberg with every offering but at least it looks a bit more exciting than A History of Nothing!
-
Nuff said.
-
I just saw Dead Ringers for the first time last night.. I've seen Naked Lunch, Scanners, History of Violence, The Fly and Videodrome.. and I thought Dead Ringers was probably around the lowest of all of those. I don't know, in the the 2nd/3rd act I thought the acting was pretty terrific sometimes, but other than that the story felt a little gimmicky and the way the movie looked.. it had that cheesed-out 80s too neon-looking feel. Eh, anyways this movie looks nice!
-
Hooray for films for grown ups! Esp. ones that still deliver the violence and nudity we all secretly crave... Anyone spot that scary looking Karambit knife (looks like a big talon), it ain't for buttering bread...
-
these days? Since they've changed the format of their trailer pages the HD links hardly ever work for me, and I don't want to watch this in "Standard Format". I've got the latest version of Quicktime, what the fuck is the problem?
-
Damn you Michael Bay
-
Cronenberg is so good at creating a world with such brutal characters. Viggo is great as long as he is in the hands of a great director like Cronenberg.
-
was ridiculously creepy as hell in Sheitan. Fucked. Up. Film. But I like shit like that. I'm really looking forward to this. I'll be shocked if this doesn't deliver the goods. Looks solid.
-
Really bad ... why not just hire a REAL RUSSIAN? Hate it when Hollywood does this... Jessica Alba is the best example of the worst casting of a role that isn't her... I mean, there is prolly the most concentrated amount of blondes in LA than anywhere else in the world! Oh and Cronenberg is good in Night Breed... love that movie!
-
I'll watch the guy take a shit.
Hopefully someday he'll return to Horror... -
let's hear some MORE bitching about shit they really don't know. Anyways...the movie looks great, I'm already looking forward to it.
-
Cronenberg should be doing the Ferrari film next I hope.
-
LITERALLY!! Anywhoo...looks friggin' awesome. Viggo reminds of DeNiro's Max Cady. In a russian kinda way. Wich is a good thing. I'm not trying to sassy though.
-
All are fucking awesome. Most of his other stuff, too, but I can see where his choice of variety in content can thin his fan base. Money may be a part of his later changes in content, but it may also just be age. He's an artisan. I'd be more disappointed if he made the same thing over and over.
-
of chicks who will be seeing this movie both for love of Cronenberg and love of naked Viggo!
-
Like an Icelandic movie without a Bjork appearance.
-
So you can see every glorious vein, crack and pubis in hi def!
-
Supposedly we get to see a fight with Viggo that has him totally nude, hence his balls are flying all over the place.
-
...what a fantastic bad guy.
-
sorry, I couldnt resist...
Movie looks great though, Viggo and Cassel are badass actors and with Cronenberg and Howard Shore behind the scenes, it'll be well worth my money. -
On a Russian nutter!
-
someone make a fucking russian mafia movie with fucking russians!! and hire konstantin khabensky immediately.
-
I'm still seeing it opening weekend.
-
but it will only be a GREAT time if there's a dirty nasty hump fest with viggo and naomi clawing the crap out of each other.
-
'history of violence' is a very curious little movie. for some indefinable reason it's excellent. there's not a lot there and yet there is. i can't explain it any more than that...i'd definitely rent it, tho.
-
It was Achorite who equated DePalma and Cronenberg in the post you were responding to!
-
Cronenberg is one of those directors who makes movies I love to watch because you're never sure what's going to happen next.
looking forward to this one! -
I showed this to my Dad who's a Russian translator and he was in stitches. Shameful. Gutting really as without saying a word Viggo had me sold on the film. He's such a fucking badass, and not Kurt Russell or Bruce Willis badass- an actual, shit ya pants, badass.
-
which was an amazingly cool movie. I have never liked Cronemberg much for the content of his work- too bizarre in a perverted and gory way i just find repulsive- but when he makes a more restrained movie he is sure good...Cassell and Mortensen are modernday classic actors and this film looks like a classic too.
-
is this film all and only about viggo mortensen & his character? the trailer is awesome and oscar-nominee naomi watts is fantastic in it. she plays ana and ana anchors the story and leads up to the 2nd character nikolai played by co-star mortensen. the trailer on the official focus features website features naomi watts who also has more screentime in the trailer. mortensen is not every and the only thing about this film, nor is there anything about him that needs to be over-excited about at this point.
-
and also his private parts for those interested
