TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED: Now With Less Decepticon!!

Published at:  Jun 27, 2007 12:44:13 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

As reported here last week, the Cartoon Network will begin transmitting early next year the new “Transformers Animated” series. More details have emerged on the project – notably a diminished role for the dastardly Decepticons.

From Monday’s Hollywood Reporter:

Cartoon and Hasbro execs said the new series, "Transformers Animated," will be significantly different than the others, adding humor, never-before-seen characters and a new premise in which the Autobots fight evil humans in Superhero fashion much more frequently than they battle the Decepticons -- the traditional "Transformers" lore since the property launched as a toy in 1984.

"We've used the basic Transformers and characters as a springboard, but then we're pretty much reimagining the whole thing," said Bob Higgins, senior vp programming and development at Cartoon Network. "What we're doing with it is basically turning it into a superheroes story. We're really excited that we're able to take this decades-old property and hopefully turn it into something that kids haven't seen or expected from a Transformers series before."

...I've sat here trying to figure out a reaction to this and it's just such a weird decision that I have no idea what to think. Are they trying to save money on a GI Joe revival by doing this? "Well, we can't afford both so let's have Transformers fighting...evil humans!"

    by harry weinstein

Autobots versus evil humans? Only Cartoon Network could be retarded enough to think that was anything like a good idea. Now if they give us Optimus Prime incinerating Dick Cheney or something I might have a slight change of heart on this... but that would imply that Cartoon Network had balls, instead of an empty nutsack dangling listlessly.

I watched stuff that was cool. It didn't matter if it was geared to me or not. So, why is it that production companies feel that in order for kids to watch the show must be geared towards them, and subsequently dumbed down? Do kids ever ask for this?

    by phaedrus007

It's not such a bad idea. Some variety in the rogue's gallery has never been a bad thing. But I hope this isn't to say there won't be anymore Decepticons. There should be both.

On another note, does anyone else think that a reimagining of the material this close to the movie they just spent zillions on is a bas sign? I mean, if the movie is so good, why not adapt it into cartoon form?

Go back and watch those S.Jack episodes and you'll see Genny's character designs, but more than that, you'll see a skillfull storyteller doing really f'in cool things with those characters...most of the rip-off stuff in this style of animation looks totally bland, with no sense of cinematic grander...

    TRANSLATION...

    by the lonely dachshund

Since super heroes are the "in" thing these days, we want to exploit this and figured a ROBOT super hero cartoon would sell. But we don't trust ourselves to make up an original, new concept that this generation can make they're own. We want to make sure it is branded with something everyone is familiar with and already aware of (especially with the new movie!). But we don't want to hold true to it: we just want its audience and pedigree. We're really excited to screw around with something that's already well established rather do something...original!? (Because then we might come up with something really cool that kids now a days can embarce and then look forward to bashing in it's live-action form 20 years from now.)

I'm the first to agree that movies and TV are using too much CGI these days... but doesn't the Transformers franchise beg to be rendered with state of the art computer animation... I enjoy Samurai Jack and Clone Wars, but this style does not hit the right note when it comes to robots

The best cartoons and anime isn't/wasn't/never will be born from marketing surveys and traget groups or just going for what's hip at this moment. You want somone who's going to give us something that's going to last and have tons of licensing opportunities and spin offs. I'm absolutely positive that some piece of shit somewhere pushed a "Transformer Acadamy" concept where new juvenile Autobots accompanied old favorites and had "adventures" on their own when the grown ups weren't looking. It was either that, "Autobot Superheroes" or "Autobot Babies". One of the three was going to rape somebodies childhood. For a change of pace it wasn't mine or yours. It's the kids who are going to be stuck growing up watching this shit.

    The Decline of Cartoon Network

    by kdog69

I think cartoon network officially died when they decided to cancel dextor's lab, johnny bravo, powerpuff girls, and samurai jack, but to keep Ed, Edd, and Eddy on their air for over 6 years. Canceling JLU was just shooting the grave. After The Batman and Fantastic for animated shows, its hard to not to see this coming.

Not so much of a hit with the 35-40 year olds out there(like me)...

I had hope at one time that Cartoon Network would create animated shows that would be tuned towards adults. Adult Swim got my hopes up but it seems to have peaked after a few years and is now mostly showing crap or constant repeats of shows from its glory days, if you can even call it that.

Does anyone remember the "Pretender" figures?

    by pacmanfever

It was a line Hasbro put out when G1 was on its last legs. The idea was that the Transformers now came with humanoid shells which they walked around with to disguise themselves. I believe the concept was even incorporated into the comic at the time, where of course everybody still recognised everyone else. The relevance of this is; that was an early attempt to increase the human dimension in Transformers. It wasn't cool then. It almost certainly won't be cool now. Change can be good, but not when it goes completely against what made the property interesting and successful in the first place.

at least Cartoon Network can still spark some creativity... in the insults that can be flung at this thrombosed hemorrhoid of an idea... but seriously why is Cartoon Network even Hasbro's first choice? Wasn't Beast Wars pretty good for toy sales? Couldn't Mainframe Entertainment put together something new for kids with quality CG animation?

How many MORE shitty animated shows can CN put out?

    by pi-rate

It seems that you don't have to have animation OR writing talents to get a job at Cartoon Network. With shows like this (and their growing collection of Live Action shows), this really makes me wish they'd finally start the third network. Boomerang, Cartoon Network, and the third one - Pure Anal Discharge. Put the "classics" on Boomerang, the newer good stuff on CN, and everything else on PAD. The only TRUE animated show anymore is Robot Chicken, as it's true hand done stop motion animation, whereas most of the other stuff is FLASH animation. Looks like I've got another "Thumbs Down" show for my TiVo...

    Cartoon network sucks

    by bloo

I watch it, but only for select show. And those shows would be anything by Genndy or Craig McCraken. Why? Because those guys have an understanding of humor and what works and those can also animate in different styles. Powerpuff looks nothing like Foster's, Dexter's looks nothing like Samarui Jack. I believe, however I'm not sure, that either CN or Lucas Films asked Genndy to do the Clone Wars in the SJ styleAs for this Transformer's project, all I can say is DON'T. Not just the fighting humans (what a dumb dumb dumb idea) but the whole thing period. It's a retarded ideaand why why pray tell Transformers Animated? Like we're going to think that "gee there was just a live action transformers movie, maybe this is going to be on Catroon network live action even though all the previews are animated" DO YOU THINK WE ARE THAT STUIPD!and while I'm ranting about CN, why all of a sudden are you showing live action movies I thought this was CARTOON FU(GUNSHOT) NETWORK,not the g(gunshot) da(gunshot) Disney Channel. School of Rock, the (GUNSHOT) MIGHTY DUCKS?

    by tenguman

It's like Picasso did the character design. And people wonder why everyone hates Cartoon Network today. Ugh I'm so sick of that style. Who keeps telling the animation studios that that style is actually good? Do they have a focus group made up entirely of retards? God, I miss the cartoons of the 80's. They should just run the old stuff... or at least put them on dvd again so I can watch them on my own.

Seriously, TF never fully dominated till they introduced the Dinobots. Kids love robots and dinosaurs. Still do. Also the Dinobots would be better to spin off since they kind of did their own thing in the original series and showed up when they were needed. " Me Grimlock, me king"

    by darthfloyd

In order to understand how the brain-trusts come up with these "Re-Imaging" ideas, all you need to do is 1) buy the rights to something that was successful back 10, 20, 30 years ago. 2) Take something easily recognizable from said show (Star Trek Delta Shield, Autobot/Decepticon emblem, etc) and toss it onto a big steaming pile of dog s#!t. 3) Sell to public, watch idiots with small attention spans buy it up. 4) When enough money comes in from pillaging that franchise, find another and repeat.

Is it even possible to be original and get people with money to support your vision,or are the people behind this show just creatively dead inside? How can the artists behind these designs even sleep at night knowing how badly they're aping Dini and Tartakovsky?

With a few exceptions, most Transformer cartoons have sucked pretty bad. And their has been a ton of them, Beast Wars, Cybertron, Headmasters, Armada, Zone, Galaxy Force, etc. What's especially bad about this one is they are trying to turn it into something it's not. There are plenty of comic book super heroe teams they could turn into a cartoon instead of the Transformers.

All these people that screw and ruin this licences don't seem to realize that it's because of what they were then that so many people love it.

Basically if we all loved it then clean it up add new effects or whatever but keep the spirt of what we loved alive don't change it because then it stops being the thing we love and becomes the thing we hate.

Autobots fight Decepticons (and GI JOE)NOT superheroes. I wish studios would actually stop and think before they act. Its bad enough that there isn't enough original ideas but don't destroy the ideas that came before.

    by gorrister

Decepticons were always more interesting anyways. Besides, how 'heroic' will the Autobots look in this series? On one side, you'll have huge, warrior robots taking on tiny, squishy human beings. That's like telling a story about a 'heroic' grown man fighting 'evil' kittens.

"What we're doing with it is basically turning it into a really shitty superhero story. I mean, look at that faux anime artwork we got going here. It can't get any crappier than that, be we sure as hell will try. This is a network that actually puts up art cards in Adult Swim insulting their OWN FUCKING PROGRAMMING. They insult the anime crowd in one - but last time I checked they were STILL running anime. They can't afford to pay for their own programming, they can't afford good classic cartoon series (or the new ones), and they can't get anyone to watch the cheapo crap they've cobbled together. How long can they keep playing Family Guy and Futurama??? Animation is too time consuming, Venture Brothers and Robot Chicken is WAY too little to keep me interested anymore. by gorrister

Beast Wars, unfortunately, fell victim to the post-columbine pussification of the entertainment world that seemed to have been led by FOX. The more 'mature' storylines were almost completely abandoned in favor of kiddy fluff. This is ultimately why Beast Wars was NOT renewed and transformed (no pun intended) into the god-awful Beast Machines, complete with a hippie 'zen' version of Primal, ZERO guns and endless drones that get 'killed' by the heroes instead of 'living' bad guys.

And I thought the last cartoon channel Transformers series was an insult. Boy does this look bad. Enough with the cheapo anime style cartoons. Anybody recall when anime was Robotech and the original Transformers? No Decipticons? I am a very open minded person who grew up with the Transformers, I never make snap judgements but in this case I'll make an exception. I am eagerly anticipating the movie and it's large budget production values, but with this cartoon project it's just too obvious that the creators "don't get it". I really hope this fails and leaves all parties involved in financial ruin.

Here's an image showing the other Autobots: http://media.tv.ign.com/media/945/945821/img_4653798.html

I think the reason Cartoon Network is going this direction is because they WANT to set it apart from the movie. If the Decepticons don't figure in the cartoon, then the cartoon can't step on Michael Bay's continuity. That being said having the Teen Titans staff design the look of the new series is just disrespectful and insulting. I'm not a Cartoon Network hater like some of the TB's but they have definitely missed what is cool about Transformers.

    by danielkurland

This, and the Speed Racer cartoon, and so much more. People don't give a shit. Stop creating stuff like Loonatics, and The Batman (which the animation for this is completely identical to), and just do what made these shows great to begin with. None of this "it's the son of", or "in an alternate future" or "we're making them superheroes". They're fucking robots that can transform, you're suddenly saying that now that isn't cool enough on its own?

They're fitting the property into their mold of an adventure kid's show? What next, GI Joe as vigilantes? What happens when total nimrods "reimagine" (ie, ruin) a property? THIS happens!

    by neo zeed

Yep. Toei worked on the tv show and the animated movie. Japan has MANY cool non-kiddy styles that they use. It's the USA animators fault, if they have faux-Pokemon on the brain (and wish to emulate it). It's the equilvalent if Japan used the art style of the Smurfs on Ghost in the Shell. They're not that stupid, so why is the Cartoon Network? Oh yeah, cause they're retards. They don't know that kids like cool stuff too.

Can't they just do a robot superhero show and call it something other than Transformers since the plan seems to be do dump everything except the names.

    Michael Bay Comments on MSN

    by cheif brody

Harry...Just clicked on the MSN homepage and saw a blurb about Michael bay defending his Transformers movie at a press conference. He all but mentions Aint It Cool News...at least the some of the fan complaints about his take on the beloved robots.

Here's an exerpt: Fans will no doubt be thrilled Bay didn't settle, but he admits the constant refrain of complaints about this change or that modification affected him. "I did get a lot of flak from fans on the 'Net, like, 'Michael Bay, you've wrecked my childhood,'" he says. "The death threats [freaked me out], but I would listen to fans on the 'Net -- I really would. I would hear their comments, but I'm still going to make my movie and I'll still put flames on Optimus."
Got a kick out of THAT!! Read the whole story here:

    Transformers is a Japanese product

    by kirttawesomio

and should stay a Japanese product. Seeing this cartoon makes me ashamed to be American. Cartoon Network does good work with adult swim, I just don't see why their doing this. If they wanted a superhero show get Bruce Timm to do his version of Legion of Superheros . That would of been cool, but no, they had to fuck that up too. Or let Timm and Dinni do their version of the marvel universe, that also would be cool. Or fuck, do a series adaptation of Jeff Smith's Bone. Not only would kids love it, adults would too as long as you keep it true to the story. And you could keep it in that stupid american animation style because that's the way it was originally drawn. BeeeUT NO! You have to go and Fuck everything up and do Pokiformers Power Puff Gang for ages 3 to 6. Aaah, oh, and Bay sucks too, he's a fine example of what happens when you give a geek franchise to a yuppie player. Re-Imagine what he would of done with Lord of the Rings. Will Smith as Aragorn, Martin Lawrence as Frodo, and Ben Kingsley as Sauron. Hollywood sucks. To bad good american directors can't get work there anymore. I guess it's all about who's dick you suck or cunt you lick. It's all about who you know in that fuck job place, and who suffers, ALL OF AMERICA! Um, and fuck... fuck everything else too.

Ok... I can understand the need for a fresh new take on Transformers. But since when does this mean that you gotta kill the quality??? I swear to God I think Bruce Tim did more damage than good with his simplistic style!!!
I mean seriously, look at the cartoon that aired in 1984, now look at this... WHERE'S THE IMPROVEMENT?!?!?! Quality has gone completely down the tubes and it really pisses me off that it has bled into Transformers now. I mean why the hell do we have to make the damn robots look like they belong in Dexter's fucking Laboratory?!?!?!
Part of the great thing about Transformers is the technical aspect behind not only the concept, but also the character itself. Didn't you guy's learn anything from Beast Machines?!?!?!

I thought Beast Machines was pretty good actually

    by crichtonastronut

Interesting concept, good character development, especially with Black Arachnia. And therewas nothing pussiied about the Rinox storyline. It was one of the darker turns in the transformers cannon, save always the death of Optimis.

I did miss Dinobot from The Beast Wars and I would've liked the importance of Megatron and Primal's parks connecting to the orginal Magatron and Pime explained instead of just implied but overall it was pretty solid.

It was all the series that came after that sucked ass. Sadly, this looks no better.

I think Bruce Timm and Paul Dini are exactly what this series and Y7 cartoons in general need to get back on track.

Hard to imagine that JLU was on only year or two ago and now we're stuck with this.

Hence the kiddy style. Transformers, Real Ghostbusters, Bionic Six, Gi:Joe were developed in the US and outsourced for animation in Japan. Now it's all wonky Samurai Jack knockoffs from the good ol' USA. I bet they'll be no guns either. Too scary for the kids.

    Just watched it today (SPOILERS)

    by alfred einstein

Fight scenes are ten minutes of whirling metal. Couldn't make head or tail of it. Who was fighting who, what was being done. It was essentially a CG hailstorm.

All I wanted was a big robot fighting another robot. I wanted to see it clearly, and I wanted it preferably to be in daylight. Not some snowglobe filled with glitter being shaken to death metal.

Shia LeBeouf is suprisingly charming. As is Megan Fox's stomach.

Man it must suck to be a kid today with thier crap ass cartoons. No more Autobots vs Decepticons.

So instead of seeing the Autobots take on the new line of Decipticon new line of Fembots we get to see:

    Autobots vs Haliburton
    Autobots vs ExxonMobile
    Autobots vs Ahmadinejad
    Autobots vs NAMBLA
    Autobots vs McDonalds
Autobots vs Themselves (Combating greenhouse gases)

A TF cartoon without the decepticons is like Sherlock holmes without Moriarty. Every cartoon needs balance......Inspector Gadget had Dr Claw.. M>A>S>K had Venom. Even Maggie from the frakking simpsons had the baby with one eyebrow, whats the point of reimagining giant fucking robots as superheroes?? Shock horror why dont you either reimagine them as giant fucking robots or not reimagine them at all .
    Pointless utterly pointless. :(

    by finky089

for those crappy designs. Then they can go after the braintrust of writers who decided to write-out the Decepticons in favor of...HUMANS! Humans- who are already "fooled" by the Autobot's most basic function: transforming. This cartoon is be underwhleming at best.

The 1986 Animated Movie is a CLASSIC

    by autodidact

I really wanted to screen the 1986 movie for my nephews before the new live-action movie comes out. I think I'll just keep it to myself because thinking back, if my uncle had come over and sat me down with a twenty year old cartoon when I was my nephews' age, I'd have most likely thought it sucked. What do you guys think? Should I screen it for them? If I do I'd at least want them to watch the first 3 episodes of the cartoon first, although I fear they will detect the suckitude that I did not at their age.

My 9 year old daughter is a bit of a tomboy, which doesn't suck for me since she digs all the stuff my 16 year old, hair straightening, fall out boy lookalike son should have enjoyed when he was the same age. But I digress.Something I've been doing through the glut of superhero flicks (I'm a big comic fanboy) is take her to the flick first, THEN show her the original source material. We discuss the differences (which allows for binding time) and ultimately she ends up with a greater appreciation for the source material. Read: she makes up her own mind how much an adaptation sucks.Works for us. YMMV.

    BTW, Autodidact

    by immortal_fish

If you heed my experience, definitely show them those first three continuous episodes from season 1 that sets everything up before you show them the 1986 flick. And if you have any of the marvel comics from the 80s (the limited series the ended up continuing due to good sales), then show them that as well. The comic isn't just head and shoulders above the cartoon, it's better by a measure of several leagues.

    Definitely watch the original...

    by mrcleanaz

I bought and the re-watched the entire original series with my 3 sons. They loved it! I was a little crushed to see it not live completely up to my memories of being completely kick-ass.

I also bought Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Beast Wars II, the Beast Wars movie, and Beast Wars Neo (the last 3 are in Japanese without subtitles) all on DVD.

We've only watched Beast wars and Headmasters so far. The voice acting for Headmasters really sucks. My boys want to keep watching the rest, so we'll see how good they are.

Anyway, back to my intended point... The end of the original series did have quite a few bad humans in them (and one with a GI Joe/Cobra reference) and my kids hated those episodes - so good choice CN!!!

Return of Prime to ease the pain of Prime dying in the movie? He comes back as a mutilated zombie and then plunges himself into a star along with all the other dead transformers.... plus the animation is diarrhea.

Prime comes back twice! And that's only counting the original series; he's probably brought back to life numerous other times in the various other incarnations. Anyway, the second time around he comes back for good (as far as G1 is concerned), but the idea of showing children the episode with the Zombie Prime with a broken eye socket and all those other robot corpses after promising his return is hilarious.

Optimus Monkey! WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HOLLYWOOD!!!

    by violator90

What is Hollywood doing to everything we love?!?!? Serious people, we have got to do some thing! This travisty of justice is just pissing me off! First they fuck up our beloved super heros and just spout out shit, then they take our most memorible cartoons and think "hey let make some shitty ass product based on these great cartoons and fuck them up the ass and make money!" The Bayformers is going to be bad, but make a shit lot of money-no doubt. But for CN to follow in that paht and make an abomonation like this. . . this so-called "Optimus Prime" is just too much to take! This is more of a metal monkey than ANY kind of a Transformers! FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD! Shit! I am really starting to get pissed at this shitty as trend that Hollywood has. "Re-image" or "re-invent" is all the same SHIT! its just a RE-HASH! Hey Hollywood why don't you "RE-THINK" things threw before serving the public some retarded as versions of things we love and care for! Shit! It really blows elephant nuts to be a fan.
