Glen here...

...with another review by the lovely MRS. HIPPO. Red Dwarf Series 8, Episode 6. Just
aired in U.K. - here's her review.

Tonights episode was "Pete" Part One, so straight away you know you will
have to watch next week to see what happens.

It's a pity the first
episodes (which I understand were originally meant to be shown as a single episode
were split in to three), as this two-parter seems to follow very quickly.

The best Red Dwarf episodes tend to be those that stand alone, however,
this is not a bad episode and Mrs Hippo (and some friends) did quite enjoy
it.

The real stars were Rimmer and Lister who prove again that they work so
well together.

Highlights include :

- Cat remembering his first meeting with Mr Ackermann

- The basketball game, where the "cons" spike the drinks of the "wardens"
so that they win, unfortunately Captain Holister drinks some too - so
Rimmer and Lister are to spend two weeks peeling potatoes. Again Lister has
a brainwave about making this easier, which of course backfires.

- The meal where Rimmer is eating punishment food (totally unidentifiable -
possibly genetic experiments that went wrong) and one of the skutters
brings Lister curry and lager.

- Rimmer and Lister running naked through the ship.

In this episode we see another attempt to speed up the prison sentence when
Kryton, Cat and Chloe Annett come across the Temest - their good intentions
toward an old man and his bird backfire and lead to Rimmer shouting "Follow
the Rimmer-like blur", and that is how we leave them running off into the
ship.

Hopefully next week will provide a satisfactory conclusion - as some
multi-part stories tend to just be dragging out one story.

Thats all for now...

Mrs Hippo

    Red Dwarf's Pete eps...

    by kaijukiller

just weren't that good. It would have been better as a one parter defintely. But I did see the final 2 episodes last Sunday---what a blast! Very very funny. And ep. 8 ends on a cliffhanger which I'm sure will be resolved either in the movie, or season 9. Very funny stuff, the best of the season in my opinion.

    Loved "Pete"

    by jayseaver

"Pete", parts one and two, are my favorites from RD8. Although it was probably out of chracter for this season, it was good to see Dave and Arn working as a team, with some actual camaraderie going on. The repeated bringing of the pair to Capt. Hollister's office cracked me up, and the basketball game was one of the funniest things Dwarf has done in a while. Trust me, "Pete 2" only gets better - it's got what is hands down Dwarf's best slapstick sequence ever, good Kill Crazy stuff, and continues the spiraling absurdity that begins in "Pete 1".

Episodes like "Pete" make me feel much better about the movie. I had wondered if Dwarf could hold up as a 90-110 minute movie, but the only padding in 60 minutes of "Pete" is "Archie". Quite frankly, I would have preferred to see Kill Crazy's intended fistfight with Pete, but I can see the FX budget not being able to handle it.

    Don't forget Holly

    by henrik

Holly's one liners about QPR and Little Chef waitresses had me laughing out loud. Norman Lovett and Chris Barrie are doing a double bill stand up tour in the UK this Spring. Should be an excellent show.

    Pete

    by phazer

Yeah, Barrie and Lovett were on form last night (unless you're a QPR fan). For a BBC budget Pete himself wasn't bad either. More dodgy time travel (but no worse than any episode of Trek, and that's supposed to be serious) though.
I've been very impressed so far with this series and it's helped to convince me that RD - The Movie could be excellent. I'm just worried about how well it might do in the States - no disrespect to the loyal fans over there that post here, but Dwarf has always contained a lot of jokes that many people in the States simply won't get. If a film is going to be successful, it's got to do well on both sides of the atlantic, and I wouldn't want the film to turn in to another Red Dwarf USA (would have been a travesty).

    Red Dwarf in the US

    by jayseaver

Actually, I was sort of wondering whether the crew was starting to write with the States in mind. There were a couple of things - Lister saying he would "take the fifth" and the crew playing basketball (we hadn't realized the game was very popular across the pond) that definitely seemed more American than English. Granted, there were a few things that flew over our heads, and a few that caused chuckles (would the American captian actually refer to "mint-choc" ice cream?), but Dwarf seems to translate from English to American quite well. :-)

    Red Dwarf

I think Red Dwarth has been kicking ass lately with the new season, it is still as funny as it as ever been! I live about 25 minutes away from were the show is filmed. And on top of that I'm a huge fan!

I think the stand alone episodes that I've seen so far like: Cassandra and Krytie TV have been the best. I can't wait for the movie version of the show!

    THANKS A LOT (NOT!!!!!)

    by shuggy boy

So episode 8 ends on a cliffhanger - thanks for that bit of information.

I could have done without it seeing as I've only just finished watching episode 6 (a day later than the rest of the UK because BBC Scotland decided we needed some cultural shit on Thursday)

BTW - Why the hell did America get to see the full series before us.

JESUS - It's a British show - Imagine the shit that would fly if if we got to see the final season of DS9 or X Files etc before the USA.

It's just another example of "THOSE BBC BASTARDS"

And an extra 50 pts if you know where that quote came from

    Padded Pete

    by richmond

You didn't think "pete" was padded? *ahem* "See you in ten minutes? ZAP See you in ten minutes? ZAP See you in ten minutes? ZAP See you in ten minutes? ZAP See you in ten minutes? ZAP" But I must say, the dino puppet evoked fond memories of Land of the Lost.

    Captain Hollister

    by lozza

Did you know that Mac McDonald (Who plays the captain) was in Batman as one of the Jokers henchmen, a little tidbit of info for everybody there.

Too keep up to speed on the RD movie you might wan't to drop by Robert Llewelyns site at http://www.llew.co.uk he writes this site by himself and you get an exclusive online book.
