Ain't It Cool News (
Movie News

Right now, JJ Abrams is involved in some miiiiighty interesting stuff, but there’s a rumor going around online that’s so blatantly fake that it needs to be nipped in the bud right now. I’ve seen several websites and blogs linking to this blog and treating it like there’s even a slight chance anything about it is true. There’s not. It’s magnificent horseshit of the highest degree, and the author of that site obviously wants to be the Supershadow of THE DARK TOWER, a bald-faced fabricator who uses a property with a huge fanbase to try and satisfy their own sad need for attention. THE DARK TOWER isn’t shooting yet. At all. They’re nowhere near shooting it, either. Right now, JJ is gearing up on his STAR TREK movie. But not exclusively... there is another film that’s also getting some of his attention, and for a little while, it was creating some real confusion about what was going on over there. So what is CLOVERFIELD? Well, word from inside the company is that CLOVERFIELD is a giant monster movie, featuring something that's being referred to internally as "The Parasite," and we’re going to see a trailer for it very soon that’s been designed and shot even as we speak. I’m not sure if it’s going to be attached to TRANSFORMERS or if we’ll see it later in the summer, but it’s definitely coming soon. And the end of it should feature one of those iconic images that makes people talk about a trailer for months. And what makes this different than any other giant monster movie? Well, as I understand it, most of the film is going to be shot using home video cameras, as if from the point of view of real people who are experiencing an attack on New York. It’s designed as a fairly small picture, all things considered, and right now, they’re working to make sure the script is going to deliver some wild thrills (like an earthquake that levels Manhattan or an oil tanker flipping over by the Statue of Liberty), but that it’s not suddenly going to turn into a giant $150 million movie. It’s a tricky balance, and if they pull off everything they’re trying to do, CLOVERFIELD could be something really groovy. Not a man in suit in sight. We’ll keep our ears to the ground on this one and STAR TREK, and I’m sure down the road, there will be real DARK TOWER news to report. Just not yet.

...the way people aren't sure about a film being made by a huge force in writing/film making, no script leaks or spoiler info just the rumour that there's something out there and it's 'big', i love it, very old school.

    Cloverfield sounds pretty damned cool

A little bit Blair Witch/84 Charlie Mopic and the Host. Could be really good.

oh wait, sorry - it's still the same distance it was the last time. btw, Looks like that Dark Tower blog has folded up shop - the title is there but all the posts are gone. I thought it was bullshit before but now I knows it.

Is JJ attached to Cloverfield, too?

Dark Tower won't come 'till Lost ends

    by performingmonkey

Remember, Damon Lindelof is going to do The Dark Tower with Abrams so don't expect it to start 'till 2010 or something. Lindelof is an excellent choice for this series, I hope that it works out and he pens a great flick. I can take or leave Abrams's directing.

"do people still care about star trek?"

    by FleshMachine

Yes, of course they do. Just cuz he last 2 films kinda sucked doesn't change the fact that there's MILLIONS of star trek fans.

    what are the odds

    by jedimindflayer

what are the odd that the whole 'cloverfield' thing is just a code for the dark tower pic? maybe they fabricated the whole shebang to throw everybody (including and especially aicn, dark horizons, chud, et al) off the real trail? it's been done before...

  • June 21, 2007, 9:45 a.m. CST

    by chi3fhog

reminds me of The Host a bit. Sounds awesome. I love me some giant monster movies; that's what I was raised on:50's horror flicks. Now if we can get a decent Them! remake off the ground.

    by kinghenryVIII

In the use of video cams and such. Could be good though> Blair Witch, in the movies the first time, gave me the heebee geebs so ..... Get this Dark Tower thing rollin'!

  • June 21, 2007, 9:55 a.m. CST

why would they want to throw people off?

    by newc0253

If i were adapting a well-known Stephen King SF/fantasy series, i'd want to build as much interest as possible. That was part of what made the phony blog so implausible: why would JJ Abrams & co start filming in secret? Also, given that there's seven DT books, it would be an enormous enterprise, equivalent in scale to the Star Wars films. Even if they compress the books to a mere trilogy of films, you're still looking at a major film franchise. It's hardly gonna be filmed on the QT.

  • June 21, 2007, 10:08 a.m. CST

    Glad that is fake

    by Black And Gold

That blog screamed Supershadow to me too. As much as part of me wants to see it made just cuz it's my favorite series of books, I kinda don't want a movie of the Dark Tower.

  • June 21, 2007, 10:14 a.m. CST

Dark Tower should be a 7 season miniseries

    by Thugsnarf3000

Each season is a book on HBO or something. That's the only way a story that epic and long could be done justice.

  • June 21, 2007, 10:54 a.m. CST

The Dark Tower series is IMPOSSIBLE to film...

    by Osmosis Jones

...if only for the fact that Jake is 12 years old, so all of his scenes would have to be shot in a *very* compacted time frame, or else you'd have that "Walt on Lost" scenario where a kid grows about five inches within a narrative span of only a few months.

  • June 21, 2007, 11:08 a.m. CST

    by McFrye

That is the only way I can see The Dark Tower working. Make it a seven season animated series on HBO.

Also, the Dark Tower kinda sucks

    by ScamsAndFlams

the first few books are good but the middle to end of the series is god awful and unreadable. not to mention none of the conflict pays off in any meaningful way with the various major characters. you can't have almost half the series, least of all the back half, suck this badly and still call it a classic.

I saw this when it was open, He tried to tell everyone that the Dark Tower movie started shooting tomorrow (or Monday I dont rememeber) and everyone just goofed on him...If he was looking for attention, he failed miserably, as his closed blog will testify ;) One douchebag down :)

    CLOVERFIELD & Abrams

    by LoneGun

My interest is suddenly peaked on this one. It sounds great. What will really make this film is the home video point-of-view, if they can pull it off believably. JJ Abrams is becoming a more intriguing director with each new project. Also, looking forward to his take on STAR TREK.

  • June 21, 2007, 1:34 p.m. CST

    Awesome, JJ Fucking Shot That!

    by Christopher3

JJ & Co. bring their "Lost" ARG tricks over to another film. Hopefully, however, there will not be any slo-mo montages set to chick rock in either Star Trek or Cloverfield.

    by SithMenace

When has he done anything that sucked?

  • June 21, 2007, 6:33 p.m. CST

    by TheNorthlander

He did write that Superman script a couple of years ago where Jimmy Olsen was gay and Lex Luthor could fly because he was in the x-files and an alien at the same time, and superman's costume lived in a bottle and kung fu kicked his cousin who also came from Krypton that hadn't blown up.

  • June 21, 2007, 7:11 p.m. CST

    everyone is allowed one pass:

    by newc0253

assuming it was reported accurately, the JJ Abrams Superman script was stupid. But everything else JJ Abrams has done has been golden: Lost, the first two seasons of Alias, and the best Mission Impossible film to date. So i'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on anything he's done with the Dark Tower. Plus since i'm only up to book 3, and i understand that the series gets worse later on, Abrams, Lindelhof and Cuse are the kinda folk i'd trust to redeem it.

    What about the Talisman??

    by Vespalad

How come there hasn't been ANY Talisman news since the big announcement a few months back? Is the thing still getting made? If so how come they have not released a single bit of information about it? As for Dark Tower and Abrams, cant someone from AICN arrange an interview and get some questions answered for us? (For example, movie or TV series, live action, CG, or animated, how to deal with Jake's age, when they might start production, etc.)

    quite the random monster name...

    by couP

If it is the monster's name, or if it's the name of a place, or if this whole idea is even real... I hope JJ and Darlton's priority after Star Trek is still that zombie season of 'Lost' and not Dark Tower.

Perhaps 'Cloverfield' is this movie's 'Blue Harvest'

    by kevred

...that is, a working title designed to throw people off the scent. Otherwise, it does seem like a bizarre title for a giant-monster movie set in NYC.<p>This could be terrifying if it's done well, and grating if it's done wrong. "My god! Look what's happening! It's amazing! And, just off camera!"<p>Sometimes I feel like special effects have plateaued a little bit; movies have been so fascinated with being able to depict something that they've forgotten to make us care. (One reason LOTR and Harry Potter have been so successful--we already cared.) This kind of curveball could use the visual technology in a way that brings the Speilbergian magic back to the moviegoing experience.<p>If it's done right.

    "cloverfield" trailer

    by moviemaniacdsg

I saw Transformers tonight, (amazing btw), and the lone trailer attached was labeled "Cloverfield" but the preview doesn't give the name. it says producer j.j. abrams and has the bad robot logo but no title. the preview is a handheld camera shooting a high school/college party when there is a loud noise and the earth shakes. flaming chunks fly through the night skies as the streets fill with onlookers. then if fades out. no title. no release date. looks intriguing, tho.

  • June 28, 2007, 10:54 p.m. CST

It does give a release date

    by Hobbitastic

I saw this trailer before an advanced screening of Transformers (which blew) and it said either 1-18-08 or 7-18-08. Pretty sure it was 1-18-08. This trailer was better than all of Transformers and, yeah, it's one of those trailers that, if the movie is successful, no one will forget, like seeing the White House blow up in the Independence Day trailer. My curiosity is peaked.

    Slusho Clues

    by VagrantNinja

    New Slusho movie clue

    by cmballard

A new clue has been found and was first reported at One of the pictures showing the infamous "Rob", may contain another clue besides the "Slusho" t-shirt advertisment. By zooming in on the words "We'll Miss" you can see that the words are actually made up of pictures glued together to form the words. Could one of these pictures contain a clue? I can't find a better resolution picture than the one I have but you can clearly see faces in the pictures. If anyone has a digital picture of this or maybe the video itself is a better resolution check it out!
