FLASH Photography!! Want To See What The Coming SciFi Series Looks Like??
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!

If you’ve not heard, SciFi will debut in August a new ongoing series based on the classic SciFi franchise “Flash Gordon.”
The channel has hired writer-producer Peter Hume (“Charmed,” J-Lo’s “South Beach”) to serve as its overseer, but there’s no news as to whether or not Queen’s brilliant and transcendent 1980 title theme will be re-employed.
We do know that a SciFi-employed photographer has been let loose on the series’ Vancouver set. Find a great deal of his or her work here.

I believe.

Where's my DVD release of the 80's Flash?
-
it almost looks like they are telling the same story as the movie, only with less money put into set and clothing design. I know alot of people pan it, but I love the 80 flash gordon movie. its so over the top but looks fantastic.
I hope that dude with the thing on his head isnt supposed to be ming -
Flash Gordon should not be low budget Sci Fi channel crap. This is just embarassing.
-
Is Ming The Merciless in this or not? Who is that brain guy?
-
Guess you missed the DVD release - it was bare-bones and selling for $9 a few years back. Now it's out of print. Maybe they'll get off their asses and make a special edition (swiping the Brian Blessed commentary from the Region 2 release) now that the TV series is coming out. Unlikely, but hopefully.
-
Cool! Costumes by Hello Kitty and sets by Big Lots.
P.S. What's up with the spot light on Flash's crotch in the prone on the table photo? (Not that I was staring or anything).
P.P.S.S. And Where is my Feedback movie? He was supposed to get a movie. -
BrowncoatJedi: given Flash Gordons background as low budget movie serials a low budget SciFi channel series seems quite appropriate.
That, however, doesn't excuse the pictures from looking soulless and dull. We should use the bore worms on the series creators. -
That looks AMAZING...
...LY BAD.
It doesn't just look bad, it SMELLS bad. It's just...bad. There is NOTHING of the original serials or the 1980 film in this. Granted, that's not always a bad thing (the Buck Rogers TV series in the 1970s didn't really have much of the original serials in them...but the pilot film DID have Buster Crabbe - the original Flash and Buck - in it). Where's Sam J. Jones? Where's Ming as he was meant to be? Where's the spaceships? Lame-looking ray-rifles, check. Chicks in fancy, futuristic dresses, check. Gay-looking dudes in odd duds...check. Still, not a single thing else to draw me to this show. I predict it will last precisely six episodes, then be relegated to DVD. Good Lord, even the makeup effects that they show here look to suck on ice. For those of you who give a crap, a poem off the cuff: Lame, lame, lame, lame, LAME!!! All kinds of lame. Every sort of Lame that you can name, from Lame A to Lame Z. Whatever, oh whatever, will this silly show be? Will it be lame but in name, or lame all the same? Either way, every day, only lame it will be. The lameness will make all the strong and weak cry, just like every other show, that is made for SciFi. Oh, the Gates, they're okay, they brighten this day, but many a name will make me say nay: on Black Scorpion, on Lexx, on Andromeda, good sir...not a one had the balls that ol' 'Scape and I-Man were. We will long for the day when to our sets we would dash, only to be disheartened by a re-visioned Flash. Oh, Galactica will go, and only this will there be...and this, we can blame, on the hated Bonnie. Bite me, SciFi. -
"Nothing but a man
But he can never fail
No-one but the pure at heart
May find the Golden Grail". Simply Put Sci-Fi Channel! No Queen! No Watch!!! Even Prince was smart enough to know when working on Tim Burton's Batman that he needed to use at least a refrain from the iconic 60's TV show theme! -
I'm not too thrilled with this "Smallville" approach they seem to be doing with it.
-
"low budget Sci Fi channel crap" is a step above all previous iterations. This ain't Shakespeare, pal.
-
... of Sam Jones! Like most everything on Sci Fi, I will be sure to avoid this like the fuckin' plague.
-
This will be poo.
-
make a FLASH GORDON series. Nothing to see here move along. ;)
Welcome to the decade of tarnished adaptations join the FF at the back of the room. Up next Buck Rogers SG-XO.;) -
DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!
-
the real question here is will there be a poison scorpion/frog thing living in a dead tree with a bunch of holes in it. and if there isn't, then why the fuck not!!!
-
Great, that's just great.
At least the guy from Angel is in it. That might be cool. -
So I will give this a chance.
-
Sorry, that's what pops in my head when I think of that Flash intro now.

They've got black people in the future?
-
None of the stills tell me anything about the scale of the show, unless there is no scale, in which case this looks like a typical, shot in Canada Sci-Fi channel crapfest.
-
travelling through wormholes.....
SLIDERS -
Scifi does some crappy shows. Like Painkiller Jane. The movie was far better than the show.
There is a 75% chance they will fuck this up.

closer to the source material than this.;) Consider this axed for your consideration. Why or why do they even attempt to adapt these properties and then rip out the elements that made it what it was. Never will some of these writer/producers learn. Now if the property was weak/short lived to begin with, then reimagine/reinvent to your hearts content. They really are going to blow it with this.
-
meh.
-
the old Flash Gordon series from the 30s was more impressive than that garbage. No spaceships mean crap Flash Gordon series.
-
Man, I'd rather see the black dude than that other guy. The white guy just doesn't look too bright.
-
Could be fun, could be crap. At this stage the writing (a bloke from Charmed?) and producing (Robert "Cheesemaster" Halmi) credits count against it in my book. I might be pleasantly surprised however...
-
Or do you want something dramatic that you can actually take serious (preferable the Shirley Walker BAS music actually, not the dull BB music or the bombastic Elfman score--though I'd rather that than nothing). Because prior to 1989, the 60s Batman theme WAS iconic and represented the character--badly. The Queen song is the same to Flash Gordon. As memorable as it is, it's campy, and if they use that then this can only ever be a campy series. Granted, that's probably what they will do with the guy who worked on Charmed involved, but if there's a chance for something better I'd go with it. I'd much rather they spent the "fan service" gesture on getting Ming right. Blond Candian, shit bastard who suggest that must DIE!
-
Those pics look LAME.
-
...does the Mongo tech/set/prop design have a distinctly Farscape-peacekeeper look to it?
-
Ming is in the pictures, I'll give you a clue: he's a pretty unremarkable looking white dude with floppy blonde hair.
-
like he travels to mongo via a fucking dimensional rip or some stargate sliders sounding bullshit.....WHAT THE FUCK IS
-
he travels to mongo via a fucking dimensional rip or some stargate/ sliders sounding bullshit.....WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ROCKETS? if this is in fact true then fuck this show
-
to my Dad's vinyl records of the old Flash Gordon radio programs. As much as it surprises me to say this, I doubt anything visually appealing that SciFi comes up with will ever come close to the fond memories I have of using my imagination to visualize what was happening while playing those old LPs (records for all you kids out there).
It's kind of like growing up with Star Wars Original Trilogy and then having to suffer through the new Pre-Trilogy out of some misguided, misplaced sense of loyalty to a franchise gone terribly awry. -
This series will probably only appeal to sci-fi tragics who will watch ANY old shit with aliens/lasers in it. Flash Gordon still awaits definitive interpretation on the big screen and this show doesn't look to be a threat to that happening some day in the near future. Thank goodness.

This is addressed to Bonnie Hammer and the other clueless dolts at the Sci Fi Channel. So let me get this straight...You acquire the media rights to one of SciFi's greatest characters, something truly marketable that is prime for a comeback...you have in your hands something that was once a glorious, grand, larger than life adventure strip drawn to sheer perfection by Alex Raymond -- which in turn literally HANDS YOU ON A SILVER PLATTER brilliant production designs, script ideas, character concepts, whatever else you could possibly ever need -- you then also had the fun Buster Crabbe serials to look back on as further inspiration AND you had the bold, cool, kookiness of the feature film, too......And yet THIS is what you came up with? Sheesh, you guys at SciFi TRULY SUCK. If there was any sense of cosmic justice in the universe, you'd all turn in your resignations tomorrow and just admit to how utterly clueless you are to genre projects. How you could totally screw something like this up -- as I said, something literally handed to you on a silver platter -- is only a further testament to the brain trust that likewise gave the world MANSQUITO.Hell, if nothing else, here's a side note to Bonnie Hammer: FIRE ALL OF YOUR MARKETING PEOPLE. Seriously, for a new show, could you possibly have released shittier stills that convey absolutely NO sense of fun, NO sense of scale, NO worthwhile production values, or for that matter ANYTHING to make this venture seem worthwhile? For crying out loud, if this was all you had to work with then just release some production sketches of "things to come", that you haven't filmed yet or will be rendered via effects work, to make it at least SEEM like this will be a cool show. But, no, rather than that you just release a flood of stills that are all boring head shots, not to mention shots that show just how much you've likewise fucked up an iconic character like Ming with your hack revisionism. Not one still...not ONE...shows any sense of what Flash Gordon should be like. Hell, its telling how utterly suck ass this will be that I can Google "Flash Gordon" and "Buster Crabbe" and black & white stills from the 1930s look more lush and imaginative and fun. Nice to know that nearly 80 YEARS LATER you've actually managed to produce a show that looks WORSE than old time serials. So seriously, just cancel this dud now. The details about the show (no ships, traveling by Stargate...oops, I meant worm hole) only solidify what a low budget, completely uncreative, HACK job this show will be.In fact, you know what's the saddest part? After VAN HELSING came out, Stephen Sommers announced he wanted to do a big budget FLASH GORDON film and people griped about that. Well, the "tone" of VAN HELSING may have been too comical or over the top for some (given Sommers film style), but I'd have taken a big budget Sommers film over this shit any day of the week. In fact, I can't believe -- as a lifelong Flash fan -- that I'm NOT getting the Sommers film and have to be handed this crap instead.Seriously, what a fucking waste of a great opportunity to do something here...
-
and Flash's eyes bleed ketchup. Dale's kinda hot - she's the goth chick on Blood Ties. Not that I watch that or anything....ahem.
-
SciFi must've pulled the pics. They aren't coming up when I go to the page.
-
Playhouse, I had the same problem earlier and I couldn't see the pictures either. But then I discovered a wacky thing. Don't ask me why, but IF you're using Internet Explorer and IF you click on the link or you go to the SciFi Channel's FLASH GORDON page, you can't see anything. All you get is the Flash Gordon name and a link directly under it for the PDF press release. Or that's all I can get whenever I use IE7 as my browser. BUT...when I switch over and use FIREFOX, no problem -- the pictures are all there. I'm just your average basic computer user, but I'm sure someone here can explain "why" one browser shows the pictures and the other doesn't.So go figure. As yet another testament to their utter cluelessness, you'd have thought that SOMEONE at SciFi would have noticed the glitch and fixed it by now. But, hey, what do they care if people CAN'T see the pictures they put up?Oh wait. Scratch that. Given how shitty this project looks, maybe that IS their plan after all!
-
I was just noticing that myself. I thought perhaps it was a JavaScript error but it looks like it's just IE. Nucking brilliant.
-
I'll have to see this badboy in action to know for sure but the design looks mediocre and frankly too commonplace with everything else today. Plus, the lighting is all wrong.
-
So, is this going back to the old Alex Raymond strip? Can we actually have some actual INFO on this?
-
Should've guessed when I saw it was a SciFi channel piece of shit.
-
his boyfriend

"Cool! Costumes by Hello Kitty and sets by Big Lots."
That's the damn funniest thing I've read here in a long time. -
Why do so many people act like the Sam Jones Flash Gordon is the be-all and end-all of Flash Gordon versions? The Filmation movie and cartoon series from the year before was hands down much better. Minus setting it in the 1930s, I'd love to see the script for the Filmation movie made into a feature film or even a live action series.
-
wait, that already happened and it was shit. nevermind.
-
...by using Netscape, and I'm completely underwhelmed. We'll see if the feeling remains when I check this series out when it debuts.
-
Ihope it's better than the piece of shit 1980 movie. It was so vucking cheesy.
-
Man, I really felt it ALL, like it was really *happening*; when Freddie Mercury sang "he'll save every one of us" I remember sussing out the implications of that in my head. . .but this looks like Dune or something, some cheap Sci Fi garbage; and shouldn't Flash have yellow hair like Sam J?
-
Although the 30s settings is not a big deal seeing it is set more on Mongo. I like the retro scifi fun feel of the old comic strip. That is what I hope it was going for. At least the film was part way there. I wish they had gone more there. FLASH GORDON is meant to be light/whacky/fantasy fun not in a drama mode like BSG. Look at the original source material. Yes the Filmation version was ever closer to the source! There was another FG cartoon in the 90s I believe that was clueless if you ask me.

...that this is going to suck.Just look at what a completely shitty job the SciFi channel did with "Battlestar Galactica".After four years of that piece of crap being allowed to stink up the airwaves it is finally being cancelled as it so richly deserves to be.(Anyone who believes it was always planned to end after four seasons is a complete idiot). If there is any justice at all this travesty won't make it past the premiere.
-
Way off on Galactica. Outstanding writing. Excellent production values. And the series creators are ending its run, not sci-fi.
As for Flash. This looks to be done on a scary level of a shoestring budget. Honestly, except for the two ray gun pictures - theres nothing sci-fi about this.
Anyone else think the new Ming is going for a red suited, Leader Desslok look?
(bonus geek points if you get the reference) -
...it's "Star Blazers". I think in the original yamato series his name was actually Dessler. Creepy, you know, seeing how it sounded so close to hitler. Especially in the second series were earth(Japan) teams up with Desslok(er) to fight the comet empire(maybe interpeted as america). Anyways I just looked at all the photos and I think Ming, if that's supposed to be Ming, is going for more of a mechanical embarrassing squid sign that you see in teen manga when a girl says something stupid to the boy she likes. Maybe it's because this series is going to be so incredibly bad that the art team wanted to secretly communicate to geeks in geek ideograms that this show's going to suck.
-
...people will appreciate the 80's movie more, and if its good.. well, its good. Win/Win
-
One of the worst things about season one of Smallville gets his own show!
