Holy Crap! There’s A Trailer Online For Paul Thomas Anderson’s THERE WILL BE BLOOD!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
And it suggests a film of simmering mood. This is one of the best scripts I’ve read recently, and seeing Daniel Day Lewis, even this briefly, just confirms that this is one of the year’s must-see movies for me. I can’t wait, and I’m so pleased to be able to share this first peek at the film with you.
it's jeff from paul thomas anderson's site 'cigarettes and red vines'.
paul & co have just sent us this link to the very first trailer for the film, and it knocked my motherfucking socks off.
figured you would enjoy considering you're a fan of paul/the site.
enjoy

f42 sucks
-
the best at what he does.
-
as this summer has been wretched.
-
And I don't understand why people go ga-ga over them. Granted I hate any and all things that have to do with the 70s and that seems to be where he gets his inspiration. Speaking of, Magnolia was, what, 70 minutes too long? But you do got to give him credit for banging Fiona Apple before she went crazy and reclusive and started recording albums that she didn't want to release and then lived in an apartment with no furniture.
-
I know very little about this movie (even after watching this teaser), but the 'good' Paul Anderson usually makes movies that are worth watching.
-
i also read the script and came away very impressed. daniel day-lewis was perfect casting and he looks great here, loved the voice-over, but to me, this could be dano's nomination to lose. he's done some solid work before like L.I.E. and of course, little miss sunshine, but PTA's script really gives his character a chance to shine, this one is definitely near the top of my list this fall
-
Jigsaw?
-
Have you guys read Upton Sinclair's novel? Does the PTA script closely follow the novel?
-
This will be great!!
-
It looks like I've got some reading to do as well...first I'll read Cormac McCarthy's "No Country For Old Men" and then Upton Sinclair's "Oil", followed by the many books in the "30 Days of Night" saga.
-
hope it will be
-
Can't wait!
-
and I love it when people (like CaptainGilgore) hate on PTA...it's like Demetri Martin's bit on bumper stickers..."To me a bumper sticker is a shortcut. It's like a little sign that says 'Hey, let's never hang out.' "I feel that way about any brain donor that has the stones to yammer about Magnolia being "too long"...hopefully they'll make Bad Boys III soon enough and these yammering idjits can leave us alone and go jack off to explosions...real movies are too much for them.
-
like water in the desert.
-
once again proving 2 things: my last point.you shouldn't breed.
-
It's a PT Anderson film, which pretty much guarantees it will be 100% Absofuckinglutely FANTABULOUSLY INCREDIBLY AWESOME
-
LOLZORDS! Talk about wasting my time - all this showed was a man with a funny moustache and some fire. Where's the torture p0rn? Also, isn't that Christy Brown in the trailer? When did they develop a cure that enabled him to be up and walking and drilling for oil and stuff? How's about I stick MY left foot up your ass, you fuckin' benefit cheat.
-
The voiceover sets a distinct sort of tone that's intimate, yet somehow above things--detached. The only films I've recently seen that manage to evoke that rare feeling are The Thin Red Line and The New World. I'll be checking this one out for sure.
-
I love the narration of the trailer. I can't wait to see this one.
DDL and PTA = much love from me. Sight unseen. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint. -
The end really IS night! God bless you, Mori. You are my new Jesus.
-
i agree - pta is great and doesnt make movies often enough - because the studios give priority to bad comic book movies, sequels and old tv show reboots - $$$ - im so looking forward to this - it feels a little like altmans "mccabe and mrs miller" and cimino's "heavens gate" - throw in a creepy blood soaked daniel day lewis and you cant go wrong - ive been a fan of pta since seeing "hard eight" years ago - and "punch drunk love" is vastly under rated - sandler and hoffman are great in it - a very overlooked and misunderstood movie - a nod to the arthouse indies of the 1980s (but with contempoarary production values and editing) - of course multiplex audiences didnt get it - its been my experience that most people that "hate" pta were born in the 1980s and dont remember life without cell phones and computers - and movies that required an attention span longer than that of a 10 year olds
-
I still want to know, though... will there be blood?
-
Ambersons? Who's he lifting from this time? Looks great, just sayin'...
-
Days Of Heaven.
-
is the greatest movie ever made.
-
One of my favorite directors. The fact that this year we got/will be getting a new Tarantino, Fincher, Lynch, Coen Bros., PT Anderson, and Chan Wook Park film is incredible.
-
As talented as he obviously is, every film he's made has been an exact facsimile of another director. HARD EIGHT was Mamet. BOOGIE NIGHTS was Scorsese. MAGNOLIA was Altman. And PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE was Hal Ashby.
-
the reason i like him so much is that he is one of the few american directors working today that has the balls to produce very original material - sure all his movies are not every-note-perfect and his influences show at times (but whos dont - tarrantino)- but you know when you go see a pta movie your going to see something original that strays from the pack - "magnolia" was great - batshit insane and great (also applies to "punch drunk love")- his "matress man" commercial is one of the funniest things ive seen - "hard eight" is great - philip baker hall as sydney is a modern day edward g robinson - class
-
...all the time. Love the guy, but it's his little thing he does ALL the time when he's being dramatic. In the end, this trailer is pretty damn bland. We know it's Anderson. We know it's Lewis. We know it will be good. But, at the same time, this trailer just sorta hangs there. Though, I must say, that is one of the greatest titles EVER for a film.
-
PTA takes on two topics: Oil and God. And how both of fucked up this country! Mark it down, this will be the best film of the year! Everybody else is playing for second.
-
Is anyone else getting a Once Upon A Time In The West vibe from this trailer?
-
The only film of his I don't like. Anderson writes parts specifically for certain actors; I still don't know what qualities he was trying to exploit with Sandler. TWBB looks interesting. Generally speaking, period pieces don't sizzle my bacon; but I'm curious as to what attracted him to the material. And writing for Daniel Day Lewis is a bit different from writing for Crazy Spoon Hand.
-
Because come rain or sleet, snow, etc. I'll be there opening day! And DDL is top-shelf! Nobody does it better. Not Penn, Crowe, Kate B, nobody. Yes, their all great, but he is the king!
-
Where's the blood?
-
See what I did there? I have broad tastes!
-
That Daniel Day-Lewis sounds a lot like Agent Smith from the first Matrix in this voice-over?
"You're not really... mammals..." -
and boring. Is he just trying to get an Oscar? GO back to making what made you famous.
-
...Someone on the site has read and/or seen something, BUT, won't review it. Let me guess, Moriarty, we're never gonna get a script review, are we? It'll be another one of y'all's "I don't want to ruin it for you but, it kicks ass!" Honestly, what's the point of this site anymore? At least CHUD *reviews* its scripts and early screenings, not just say they've read/seen them.
-
Yes, I agree the Daniel Day-Lewis voice over narrative is very reminiscent of Agent Smith from The Matrix.
-
After a summer of films with numbers after the titles, I have something to actually look forward to. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the greats; thank god he didn't really retire.
-
I like PT Anderson's films, especially Magnolia, but to be honest, that trailer does absolutely nothing for me. I guess it's supposed to be mysterious and you're supposed to wonder what this is all about, but I just didn't.
-
Don't discriminate. BTW, very interested in this pic. It does look dramatically different from what PTA has done before. DDL plays this part in every movie, though.
-
As a result, I am not interested
-
PTA and Cohen Brothers have both done westerns! When great directors touch the western you get either great films or fascinating failures, but they are rarely not worth seeing. I'm giddy.
-
That's the first thing I thought of when I saw this - days of heaven, Badlands...Unfortunately PTA is not Terence Malick, and Malick himself isn't even capable of those former heights...The New World was so boring I fell asleep, twice.
-
. . .because he's a great filmmaker and has established himself as such. I hate Tom Cruise as an actor but I thought he deserved the Academy Award for his work in Magnolia. Can't wait to see this movie--I'm a big fan of Daniel Day-Lewis.
-
i assume you were referring to my remark - i said "it's been my experience that most people that hate pta were born in the 1980s..." - again, i said "my experience" and "most people" - there are always exceptions - of which you obviously are - but again, most of the people i know that hate pta are young (born after 1980) and have short attention spans (cant sit through a 3 hr movie without groaning)
-
I hate Sadler, but I finally just recently watched it (I bought it on release day and never opened it, oy) and loved it immensely. All of PTA's films have been excellent (to me) and I would have bought this sight unseen. Looks good. Real good. Hard Eight. Mm mmm good.
-
thank god PTA is back in business. for the people up above who cannot seem to fathom why someone would want to make a movie about oil: support oil companies or dont, it is a somewhat important issue in this day and age, maybe kinda something you might call the reason the world goes around for the people running it, so i for one am glad someone is making a movie about it that is not "we are going to call this movie syriana and then never even say what syriana is because really, everyone knows that syriana is an imaginary country drafted by a think tank in the 80's that was a merging of iran, iraq and syria that was all under US control so there is no need to explain that is the film". (i hated that fucking movie so, go PTA)
-
ala Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York, The Departed might be the greatest film of all time. As it is, The Departed is gloriously, compulsively watchable but Nicholson is so horrendous in it. His Costello is a joke and it never makes sense why Leo's character is so afraid of him. Bill the Butcher was scary fucker and every time he was on screen in Gangs there was tension -- you had no idea what he was going to do next.
-
mr.brownstone also pointed out days of heaven, but yeah -- it felt like i was watching outtakes from a 70's malick flick. i do like pta, and expect this should be good, but now i expect an ennio morricone score to accompany it!
-
another new great looking western
-
Magnolia is a stone-cold masterpiece.
-
This guy'll never get another dollar of mine or another minute of viewing from this asshole. That all ended with Magnolia. Talk about overrated. He's God's gift to pseudo-film snobs. Wonderland was head and shoulders a better film than Boogie Nights.
-
Awesome...just awesome...
-
Yeah, I'll be watching this trailer 100 times today. Thank God for talented filmmakers.
-
...if it's directed by PTA. And, thank the Lord for it. Bring on the pretentious, self absorbed glory of PTA and others of his ilk. We need them, now more than ever. Prick.
-
I don't know why but that voice-over bothers me - it sounds weird. Lewis is a great actor, so I hope I'm wrong. I'm not a big PTA fan, I only like one of his films (which also happens to be the only Adam Sandler movie I have ever or WILL ever like). But CaptainGilgore, you gotta' be kidding. You hate every movie from the 70's??? You mean like...Godfather, Cuckoo's Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, Taxi Driver, Jaws, Exorcist, Chinatown, Deliverance, Network, Carrie, Marathon Man, American Graffiti, Rocky, Young Frankenstein, The Conversation, Close Encounters, Annie Hall, French Connection?? You mean crap like that? Dude, do yourself a favor and don't tell too many people that...you know, seeing as it's considered the Golden Era of film, might make you look sorta' stupid. This movie looks like it was inspired a great deal by a Terrence Malick's Days Of Heaven, a favorite of mine.
-
some of the voice-over is cool, and I'll see it because I love PTA (I can forgive him for PDL, we all make mistakes) but there is absolutely nothing exciting or promising about the trailer itself.
-
Wow - excellent observation. I had never really thought of it that way. Very smart. He is a poser cinematically and those comparisons seem dead-on. In my book, Boogie Nights is one of the most overrated pieces of crap of all time.
-
I agree, I would take pretentious over bland any day. How many PTA features could be made for the cost of that bloated mess Pirates 3?
-
...about the 80's comment. I myself was born, sadly, a...bit before the 80s. And I would have to consider myself a fan, loving Hard 8 and considering Boogie Nights one of my top 100 favorite movies. On the other hand I think the Bill Macy thread in Magnolia is redundant and seems a bit too artificial and the movie would have profited by not having it, and I was rather horribly disappointed by the flat and simplistic Punch Drunk Love. However, a bunch of people born in the late 70s-mid 80s work for me, and although I can find an ally or two about Punch Drunk Love I get savaged over any bad word said in regard to Magnolia. So I think you may be knocking the wrong demo there.
-
Man, I want MORE! This looked like something from the fucking 70's. That was awesome. Thanks for posting that, Drew! Too long since we've seen anything from P.T. or Lewis.
-
Oh yeah, right. Dead and ancient.
-
And Jack Palance. Nice call - Oklahoma Crude.
-
...AGAINST THE RISING OF THE TIDE!!!
-
TB has a point for once. Why even comment on these fucking scripts if you're not going to review them...It smacks of egoism, and a HA HA attitude. One of the best parts of this site was the script stuff and at the moment it's just turning into a johnny come lately news site with a smattering of plant reviews.
-
alongside james cameron, noce combo don't you think.
-
10 years on, and film snobs are trying to topple boogie nights, only now they're calling *ME* a film snob for loving Boogie Nights. and I do. Every time I watch it it's like revisiting old friends. Scotty-Jay! Rocky! Colonel! Cosmo(he's chinese)!
They don't make 'em like they used to. Except when they do. Welcome back Mr. TA. -
Then the article mentioned Daniel Day Lewis, and I wondered how the hell he got roped into a sci-fi/horror movie.
-
There's nothing to topple. It's a derivative vacuous completely false cynical Scorsese rip-off with all the depth and insight of a bottle cap. Other than that though...yeah.
-
I've waited all my life for an old foosty Oil movie to come along and 1 comes along at once!
-
Now there's a thought: neo-westerns. Love PTA's films, an original voice in American cinema.
-
I always feel dark after watching one of his movies. I mean, some say he's a genius. I'll watch this when it comes out. But he doesn't see reality the way I do. There's seems to be a negativity surrounding his films.
-
...and tell them to go ahead and put PT Anderson's name on the ballot for next year.
-
you'd have to film flies fucking for a scene to be more boring.
-
you're right. I too only like to watch films that mirror my view of the world that way I'm never challenged. I like to understand what I'm shown.
-
also don't like PTA. And does anyone know if this takes place in Texas or So Cal? I'm pretty sure the book takes place in CA, but I've heard the movie takes place in Texas. To continue the continuity of PTA films I hope its in my lovely So Cal.
-
P.T. Anderson is a natural-born filmmaker, and anyone who tries to deny this is an idiot. All four of his films have been wonderful, in different ways. Yes, they each have their particular flaws, but no more than most other great films wandering the cinematic landscape.
Hard Eight is a remarkable debut that ripens with repeat viewings. It does feature some blunt dialogue that has been PT's major problem thus far, but it's still a great little picture.
Boogie Nights is still a masterpiece, albeit heavily indebted to Goodfellas.
Yes, Magnolia is too long and self-indulgent, but it's probably better for us that he got that film out of him early on. And besides, it's amazing to watch, despite its problems.
Fuck, my cat is coughing up a massive hairball.
And PDL was a wonderful movie that also benefits from repeat viewings, if only because your expectations will have been wiped away by then. Anyone who is still bitching about PT using Sandler in the film just doesn't fucking get why he did it or why it FULLY DEPENDED on the Sandler persona to work half as well as it did.
As my wife has stated, I'm not terribly crazy that Paul chose to do a period piece based on another person's source material. However, as he continues to deliver fascinating work, I'll continue following him to the ends of the Earth. This has been my must-see film of 2007 for the past two years, which probably means I will be a bit disappointed no matter what. Still, I hope it kicks ass.
As for the trailer, I'm not sure who put it together, but it's gotta be something they cobbled together quickly to satisfy fans who have been eager for info about the film for ages. If, however, it turns out to be an official first trailer that hits theaters (which I highly doubt), Paul and his studio are in big trouble. It's not that I didn't like the scenes, but the enigmatic voiceover and random collection of scenes does not tell us what the film is about. The lack of music and credits suggests that this is indeed a mere snippet to tide over internet fans. Hopefully the next trailer will be better. -
People try to equate liking PTA with being smart. Yeah, Boogie Nights is a reeeeeeal deep film. So complicated, so many layers. Oh and a prosthetic penis. Gimme a break. I guess what it really means is that fanboys who normally just like superhero movies can FEEL smart for liking his films. I liked Punch-Drunk Love because it was the closest thing I've seen by him that feels somewhat original and fresh. The others, as has been said, feel like copies of better films. This movie will proably not touch Days Of Heaven, but I'm at least glad to see that he's finally dragged himself out of the San Fernando Valley.
-
With the 3:10 to Yuma, WALL-E, Transformers Clip (that finally made me forget that Michael Bay is directing) and now There Will Be Blood trailers hitting i could not be happier. What's next Kubrick faked his death and is going to release a new movie this winter?
-
I'm so happy to see some PTA discussion going on here. He's the kind of filmmaker that definitely splits people down the middle and he's not for everyone. I for one am a huge fan of Anderson's work. I've enjoyed every one of his movies and "magnolia" is my second favourite film of all time (no. 1 being "2001: A Space Odyssey"). So I was overjoyed to see your post, jfp2007, in which you proclaimed "magnolia" as the best movie ever. It really is a spectacular piece of work. For me, it has some of the richest, most fully realized characters in modern cinema. Every character in the movie is portrayed to perfection and the journey they all embark on is so profoundly moving. The "Wise Up" sing-along sequence is one of my favourite movie sequences ever. I've probably watched that a few hundred times by now. And so WeinerPenis, I freaked out when I saw that a post of yours contained mention of both "magnolia" AND "2001." Put a big ol' grin on my face.
-
But I definitely see it. I'll admit that this project interests me less than his others, as it's not an original story of his, and I'm not that interested in the subject matter, but I definitely owe him, and will be seeing it opening day.
-
Why is he using the imbecilic tagline from that abominable "horror" series with Tobin Bell as the title... why?
-
is one of the best scenes I've ever seen. Sorry if I spoiled that for anyone, but the film has been out for years. That scene, and Cruise's interview in Mangnolia, and Sandler trying to remain calm on the phone and his hands gesturing emphatically. Terrific films.
-
Nice, effective trailer imo. Big fan of DDL as well so I'll surely be seeing this. Trailer has a nice subtleness to it in the way the oil discovery is sure to lead to the fuckedupness that follows greed.
-
I should just shrug and accept that some people will label others as idiots or tasteless for not liking the same things they like, but I think it's important to stress that it IS possible to be a hyper-intellectual film snob and still dislike the oeuvre of P.T. Anderson.
Thinking that his work is pretentious and derivative of other better artists, does not make one uncultured nor a boorish lout who needs their films spelled out for them with giant cue cards.
It's also possible for one to think that Mssr. Anderson is a smug arrogant rich kid who positively reeks of entitlement (based on stories that one heard while attending one of his alma maters and Mssr. Anderson's petulant sulking after losing Best Screenplay to American Beauty) without being a "jealous hater".
That being said, I shall treat this film as I treat all films. With an open mind and a hope that it is indeed good. It looks interesting and I do love me some period films. -
is a fucking brilliant genius, HOWEVER, I was not a fan of Punch-Drunk. I agree that it was pretentious and overall, a little boring. Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, all amazing. You hear me, Spazz? Magnolia=AMAZING. PDL was too quirky for its own good. I like a quirky romance when the people are actually, you know, a bit odd, like Me, You, and Everyone We Know, but can't stand it when it's an actor trying to get all cute and shit, like Sandler in PDL or Carrey in Eternal Sunshine. And I guess I can see how someone might not appreciate Magnolia, but Boogie Nights, c'mon! Who didn't enjoy that film?
-
so I don't worry when he tries to make comments about movies, lol. poor little guy has no idea about anything. he does like Eli Roth and Dane Cook, though. probably masturbates to Hillary Duff...
-
he misspelled it like 3 times...what are they teaching kids in school these days?
-
And so does Judd Apatow.
-
Hard Eight was his ode to Scorsesse. Boggie Nights was his ode to Johnathan Demme. Magnolia was his ode to Robert Altman. Punch Drunk Love was his ode to David Lynch, a day dreaming and not a nightmare having David Lynch. Seriously, he's one of the best filmakers working out there today. Looking very forward to this.
-
And I love Puch-Drunk Love, its such a ncie film, I dont see how you couldnt enjoy it. Cant wait for this one. it's been too long
-
I have so much in common with this movie already.
-
Daniel Day goes f'ing ballistic nutso on people in this, im in. And how is PDL in any way channeling David Lynch? I dont see that AT ALL.
-
can't wait.
-
Magnolia is one of my favorite films. Really well-written and expertly directed. I also saw it as a 50% love it-hate it.
-
in Boogie Nights. PTA is using the porn industry to comment on the legit film industry as it progressed from the creative boom of the 70s into the blockbuster mentality of the present day. There was such a passion in the 70s to create great films, it trickled down to the porn industry which was also trying to make real films too. Then along came Star Wars (I love it when Reed Rothchild says he looks like Han Solo) and home video to forever change that 70s passion to create art. The first thing that happens in the 80s in Boogie Nights (at the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, 1980 in fact) is a cinematographer blows his head off. As the legit film industry became obsessed with creating the next summer blockbuster and capitalizing on the home video market the porn industry's aesthic declines. Philip Baker Halls character suggests that amateur porn is the future of the industry. Jack Horner totally sells out his artistic instincts. I love the scene at toward the end of the movie where a fan tells him "Your films suck now anyway."
-
Great anylasis and I definitely agree. Oh and to another topic since when is box office success in terms of quality. Magnolia didn't make a lot of money therefore everybody hated it. Umm not necessarily.
-
But, heck, it's Paul Thomas Anderson. I'm sure I'll love the final product.
-
But I kind of dig that. It's like a fine wine that you save for the right moments. Movies seem to have been in a rut lately and this is damn refreshing to see.
Can't wait. PTA sure as hell knows how tocreate atmosphere and has a wonderful way of fleshing out a universe.
LONG LIVE PTA!!! DIE Paul WS Anderson!!! -
I loooove how it was like a shot in the arm. I find it far from pretentious. In fact I find it the most emotionally raw than his others. All damn fine films either way.
-
I think Punch Drunk Love might be my favorite PTA flick. What was he trying to get out of Sandler? He essentially made his own version of a standard issue Sandler movie with Sandler playing yet another variation - albeit a much more dysfunctionally realistic version - of his signature man child whose crazy, repressed life is put on track by the female lead. The awkwardness, the prolonged emotional adolesence, the anger - it was like bringing Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore into real life through a weird - and as someone already said Ashby-esque - impressionistic prism. Add to which it's raw and fun and unpolished and funny, it has an implausibly compelling love angle and it totally allows me to have a super-pretentious interpretation of it. Looking forward to There Will Be Blood. There are far worse things out there than a half-assed Malick. If in fact that's what it turns out to be it will probably be the best movie of the year.
-
I think there are a lot of people who miss the boat with Boogie Nights due to its subject matter.
-
Could he have finally gone from ripping off and copying the likes of Scorcese, Altman, and Malick, to doing something original and on par with their work. I'll be there.
-
First considering that nobody can agree with hes ripping off with PDL is pretty funny but aside from that who cares if hes strongly influenced. How does that lessen the quality of his work. Maybe he can make Malick watchable with this film as Malick has never done it himself.
-
That was not a trailer for a movie; it was the trailer for a work of art. Such a difference integrity makes. I'll happily wait and wait.
-
and that's its charm and beauty. I think you really have to adore awkward people to understand where the truth of Berry's characterization comes from. I've seen this film many times, and with each viewing the film becomes funnier, darker, and more romantic. Possibly, viewer aversions may stem from not falling for the humor. I get hash stares by friends who watch this movie with me because I laugh so much and they rightfully get annoyed. In my defense, there is so much subtle humor in PDL that usually missed on the first visit. PDL is definitely a piece of cult lust and that is O.K by me. I don’t think I want PDL to be popular (it makes it less pervy).
-
Give me Days Of Heaven, The New World, and The Thin Red Line (flawed as it may be) over Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, and Magnolia any day of the week.
-
but I find his characters and plots flat and dull.
-
It just sort of... sits on your chest, and stares in your eyes.Wasn't even on my radar. Cheers, Drew.
-
I would say he subverts his plot whenever possible, or moves it sideways as much as he moves it forward, but I find Days Of Heaven to have a classic film noir plot and is very romantic in its way, while The New World is haunting and tragic. Thin Red Line stumbles here and there, but the hour or so in the middle is probably the greatest war movie I've ever seen. With the exception of PDL, which I find funny romantic and wonderfully strange, I think PTA's films have had too much film school brio and much too little heart and soul. I don't know what his "voice" is yet, and it may be he doesn't have one. I just didn't buy a single minute of Boogie Nights - not the plot, the characters, nothing. From the time Marky Mark's jumping on a bed saying he's going to be a shining star, the whole thing feels like complete bullshit to me. Sorry - I know that's unpopular, but I can't join in with all the sheep on that one. I will definitely stay open to this new one though and to each his own.
-
IVE NEVER BEEN MORE BORED IN MY LIFE!!!
-
GET A LIFE THEN!
-
but tragic I did not find out. Colin Ferrel had zero charisma in that film and his love story was not convincing and went nowhere. In fact all the character in that film did nothing for me at all. But it had tons of pretty shots so I guess that carries everything. Oh and those voiceovers had nothing interesting to say.
-
New World was one of the only times I've really wanted to stop watching the film before it finished. Glorious cinematography aside, it did absolutely NOTHING for me. Even as background ambiance, it fails. What's with the constant incomprehensible muttering voiceovers? Bleh.
Paul Thomas Anderson's films (while some may argue are pretentious) at least keep you intrigued with excellent characterisations. It's a shame he shares a namesake with Paul W.S. Anderson - poor guy. -
This is a fucking wicked ass trailer. DDL looks brilliant. It looks as though this film will be channeling Terrence Malik or in the case of PTA ripping off (as some would believe) but fuck it, no one is making movies like this anymore so good for PTA for doing it. I can't wait to see this motherfucker!
-
New World just needed a scene where somebody lights firecrackers while Sister Christian plays, that would have made it so much more interesting.
-
Magnolia and Boogie Nights are probably both in my Top 25 Films. They're so good. Hard Eight was also brilliant.
I wasn't really a fan of Punch-Drunk Love, so I'm hoping There Will Be Blood is a rebound film.
This is my must-see film of 2007. -
damn this such a good trailer. It's simplicity, the voice over, etc. I love the music that comes in at the end. Then the title in that glorious type. pure bliss
-
is what made it the opposite of tragic. It showed innocence in a woman with no ties to this earth. It showed the pure downright simple pleasures of life that could be found. It was a wonderful way to end her story.
The brilliant ending of the ship sailing to the sea was the tragic part. All innocence is lost. The new world of tomorrow awaites just over the horizon.
What a wonderful freaking movie. -
animalstructure and I agree on something? call in the national guard, we must be under attack from aliens...Thin Red Line, in my top ten. the scene between sean penn and jim cavaziel on the boat...so amazing...

do his movies show an influence by other directors styles? - ones hes obviously a big fan of? - i suppose - this doesnt make him a ripp off artist - look at his subject matters - example - was "boogie nights" shot like and edited similarly to any number of scorsese movies? - i suppose - is that a bad thing? - not in my opinion - has scorsese ever made an epic about a porn star? - no - if pta made a mafia/gangster movie with a catholic guilt subtext and shot it like a scorsese movie then you can call him a rip off artist - but even then im not sure - that said - i think "punch drenk love" is unfairly maligned - it was very different from anything seen and anything expected from pta - it is at once hilarious, scary and touching - and beautifully acted - as surreal as it seems it still feels real - the chaotic warehouse scene (where all the shit hits the fan at once and sandler gets the girls phone number) was brilliant - all the long one take shots with no cuts - brilliant - i love the broke down little organ keyboard (as a metaphor for him) - all he needed, like the keyboard, was someone to find him tape up his damaged parts and play with him - maybe im reading too much into that

Jigsaw should get a hold of PTA and punish him for making convoluted movies.
-
And he should bring Daniel Day Lewis, too. That guy has been coasting off of "last of the mohicans" since I was in middle school.
-
I never heard of this movie til now. Now I must see it! Who was that speaking? Sounded like Hugo Weaving.
-
Thats what I like most about his films. He loves his characters and as weird as they are they bursting with heart and joy. I dont know how one can say his films have no heart. I mean he made a movie called Punch Drunk Love for crying out loud
-
PT is an awesome filmmaker. This looks fantastic and I for one will be front and center on opening day.
-
I like Mirajeff...I disagree with him a lot, but he always justifies his opinions at least. I respect that. although he doesn't return E-MAILS EVEN WHEN HE REQUESTS THEM TO BE SENT BECAUSE HE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT A CERTAIN CELEBRITY WHO'S SHOW I WORK ON THAT EXPOSED THEMSELVES TO PEOPLE ON THEIR STAFF AND I WROTE THE E-MAIL 2 WEEKS AGO!!ahem...scuse me...

But that doesn't mean this movie needs to be on my must see list in order for me to have good taste. Seriously, I'm all about the gore, tits, robots and superheroes. They're the shit! That don't mean that I don't enjoy "smart" movies like Zodiac. But it does mean that 300 might be the greatest movie ever made!
-
I don't care what you say - Paul Dano has never been good before.
-
I'm not saying he's Pacino, but he was great in Little Miss Sunshine...I can imagine it must have been tempting to overdo it, but he kept it more or less subdued...it's not like he has a huge body of shitty work that justifies the worry of him sinking a movie. that's just silly...
oh wait...I think maybe you only wrote that to get a rise out of someone as a joke...and I fell for it...shit... -
"In this world, a man, himself, is nothin'. And there ain't no world...but this one."

you're wrong...I seen another world...sometimes I think...it was jsut my imagination...

I did the exact same thing and I read the thing twice before watching it.

The link isnt working for me.

I'll say one thing for PTA, he has to be a great DIRECTOR...Has to be. Forget visualist or artist or writer if you like. He pulls some fantastic performances out of the actors. The diction in that teaser is wonderful. I'll probably go see the film purely on DDL's voice alone.
-
...."Just cum on my tits" is in there, I there.
-
It's ugly. It's true. It's fucked up. It's beautiful. I don't know how BannedOnTheRun actually meant his "it's like he's reading my mind"-line. But that's in a way how I feel about most of PTA's work. The feeling, that inspite of the images' and characters' originality, what I hear and see seems to come from some place inside of me. This trailer is just damn great.
-
per se, but for me he falls into that category of director who, even though I don't love everything he does, I'm glad he's out there doing it. But fuck me if that doesn't look awesome. Hell, if you can pack that much atmosphere, tension and foreboding in a tiny YouTube clip, imagine what the movie could be? Daniel Day might be the most incredible actor to watch, no matter what he's doing. And super ditto to those who noted the Cimino/Malick vibe. I can't wait.
-
I just watched it last night and he'd be about the right age as the kid in this movie, and he has that same half smile winsome look.
-
Welcome back, man...God how we've missed you =)
-
First so I don't go off topic and gets in trouble... oil. kid. fire. boom. OK. Will, i found your myspace page and thus your YouTube channel, and nobody had subscribed to it. SO I am happy to say I am your first subscriber. Somebody else came by and subscribed after me. Love the French cat video.
-
...yet another has subscribed to you, Will. I must have started something...
-
Anyone want to tell me why AICN still doesn't have a story posted about the ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY article which shows the new batsuit. Its on just about every other movie news site right now.
Check out MANIA for instance. -
I have absolutely no idea what this movie is really going to be about, but I'll be damned if I don't want to know. It's been a little to long since I'be seen a Paul Thomas Anderson film, but at least he aint like Terrence Malick.
-
Looking forward to it.
-
"knocked my motherfucking socks off"? Please people. Anyway, I love Daniel Day Lewis and PTA is one of best directors around, so that's reason enough for me to see it. Crazy hyperbole isn't necessary. :)
-
Very cool! And Punch-Drunk Love is beautiful. My favorite PTA film. Also my favorite Sandler film. And Mary Lynn Rajskub is in it so how could you lose?
-
heeheehoohoo!!!!!!!!!!!
-
you know, all boring bullshit for sleepy fairies.

Boogie Nights was brilliant. Magnolia was an interesting set of vignettes and some good character stuff (surprisingly Cruise included) but overall a mediocre film a best, and definitely not worth the praise that gets heaped on it. If Boogie Nights doesn’t exist, then Magnolia doesn’t get the same level of attention. And Punch Drunk Love is a pretty bad film, with the most irritating fifteen opening minutes ever put on film. Sandler was okay, but overall a huge miss. But PTA is still more interesting than 90% of the films out there, so I’m interested to see this.
-
I love the frazzled weird score to that film. Its also really sweet.

And I still think Magnolia is one of the most compellin

3+ hour films. Its long but all the storylines and great dialogue just speeds you right through. Very much like Boogie Nights. Incredibly compelling stuff.
-
But let's not discount Magnolia or Punchdrunk Love (no one seems to be criticizing Hard Eight, although I think it is the weakest of his four films). Both of those movies are tremendous accomplishments - just a hair short of masterpieces each.
-
You mean this story posted on June 14? http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33005
-
I saw it on a massive screen. I was conscious that it wouldn't be for everyone, this movie, but goddamn if I didn't think it was the best film I'd seen on the big screen for ages. AGES. Now, this ain't a movie like, say, 'Children of Men', where I felt that people who didn't like it must have something wrong with their brain. No, this is a different kind of cinema, that's not everyone's cup of tea, but by god those of us who loved it are incredibly grateful for the kind of transforming experience that's quite rare in the cinema these days.
-
... should be shot. Am I being unreasonable? NO.
-
Why the attack? Did I say I only watch movies that are of my worldview? I said I watch his movies, I just don't agree with his worldview. That was low-blow, and pointless. I study and try to understand all types of philosphies. I just, personally, have a, seemingly, more optimistic view of life than Mr. Anderson. (Or so I would gather form watching his dark films.) Hell I could be wrong though. I'm man enough to admit and discuss my philisophical failings.
-
That's fine if Boogie Nights didn't work for you. It's one of my favorite films, but whatever. What bothers me about your statement is that you equate not digging it to "jumping in with the sheep." Isn't it possible that some (or dare I say most) of us who think the film is great aren't simply sheep?
