The trailer for the awesome ROCKET SCIENCE hits the net!!

Published at:  Jun 15, 2007 7:13:07 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It's a really odd feeling to see all these Sundance movies start to hit or start their advertisements. This was my first year, so I've never had that experience before... but we've had ONCE, EAGLE VS. SHARK and now ROCKET SCIENCE either see release or begin their Fall push.

ROCKET SCIENCE was probably the most widely loved movie in terms of reaction from critics that I saw at Sundance. It's funny, it's quirky, it's harsh, it's kinda fucked up... everything you expect from an indie comedy that plays at Sundance. Click here to read my review if you so desire!

Now the trailer is online. Give it a watch. This is definitely a movie to keep on your radar. Check it out when it hits theaters this August!

debate team, shot selection, similar issues. A little too similar? I'm a huge Thumbsucker fan, so this makes me either worried or curious.

    by lovecraftfan

Very well-written, funny with some great acting by the leads. Just a really well done film. And I like the ending isn't all tied up. There's no big life lessons and a lot of the problems aren't even solved. Please see this movie.

I loved the movie but the trailer doesn't do it justice

    by bungion boy

This was one of my favorite films at Sundance. I saw it again last week at the Sundance at BAM festival in Brookly and it held up perfectly. But for some reason this trailer has a weird mood to it. It string a lot of one liners from the film that are really funny in context, but don't mean as much here since it doesn't explain who these people are. Especially Judge Pete, who is one of the funniest characters in the film. Here they just use two of his bits that don't make much sense out of context. By all means, see this wonderful wonderful film in August. It's quite special. Much better than this trailer makes it look.

    Thumbsucker sucked

    by nairb the movie

and this movie looks like a part of the on-going, unstoppable, quirky indie pictures that has tainted the indie market. The only way an indie picture gets made now is if its a quirky plot, with quirky humor, and an elliot smith/shins/flaming lips/decemberists/artic monkeys etc. soundtrack. Its for people chillen in the coffee houses thinking that their discussion of Darfur is helping in Darfur jumping on their Vespas to the the quirky indie theatre in the basement of some nearby winebar so they can kick back, smile, and wallow in there huge sense of self worth. And the trust funds go marching on...

I think that, judging by the trailer, (and thats not always a good thing to jusge movies by), This movie might just be that little independant movie you see every so often that pulls a 'WTF' with the acadamy and go's for the big nominations.

I will trust in you that this trailer does not do this film justice and see it when it comes around. I am rooting for it. I saw 5-25-77 and loved it to death but again the trailer does not do it justice. HEY FILMMAKERS!!! MAKE HONEST TRAILERS DAMMIT!!!

This isn't a total Thumbsucker rehash.

    by bungion boy

Thanks for the trust, wackybantha. I liked Thumbsucker, but aside from this film having a few common themes, they couldn't be more different. Thumbsucker featured a high school debate team, but this film is ABOUT high school debate. Really gets into it and finds a lot of humor in it, where Thumbsucker only scratched the surface. I'll admit that Rocket Science isn't the most original film of the year. It shares elements with "Election," "Rushmore," and yes, "Thumbsucker," among others. But it's still done exceptionally well here. This is a quirky indie movie. We've seen it before. But I still loved every minute of watching it. It's well acted and has a lot of bitter sweet drama, often lacking in indie comedies. This isn't a great trialer, but I still think it's a great film.

    by comedian_x

his shit is ripped off by every hipster doofus film student with a penchant for suit jackets and bangs in their eyes? I can only imagine the director of this staring through is black-rimmed glasses whispering that, "you must be awkward -- ever more awkward. It isn't cool unless you're so very awkward."

Rocket Science = AnderSucker for the mainstream

    by wongertron

Loving Wes Anderson's films and mildly enjoying Thumbsucker, I really loved this film. For those who don't like the indie comedies like Anderson's films, I think this movie offers a lot for those who watch more mainstream cinema can enjoy. I had trouble routing for Thumbsucker's lead but Reece Thompson's performance has you cheering for him in the end. I'm intrigued by Blitz's fascination with grade school competition since he did Spellbound before this film. At SIFF, he had explained that he had won a debate competition in high school and that he used a lot of his experiences for this film.
