BABYLON 5's JMS Wrangled To Script SILVER SURFER Spin-Off Movie!?!? Seems So!!
Merrick here...
20th Century Fox is soooooo certain FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER will be a hit that that plans for a SILVER SURFER spin-off movie are already afoot.
An article in yesterday's LA Times says this:
Feeling bullish on the eve of the release of its "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," Fox has already put a feature spin-off into development that will star the enigmatic Surfer, with J. Michael Straczynski currently crafting the screenplay.
[EDIT]
Well, perhaps the studio has heard the negative static, since it apparently hopes to spin the new Surfer franchise in a darker direction to attract the slightly older demographic of its X-Men films.
Straczynski is (probably) best known as the overlord of the BABYLON 5 universe. A new, straight to DVD B5 production comes out this Summer (HERE's a trailer. Select Main Menu, then the B5 Lost Tales window). He's also created comic books like MIDNIGHT NATION and RISING STARS, as well as writing for comic franchises like SPIDER-MAN, SILVER SURFER, FANTASTIC FOUR, and THOR.
Straczynski (aka "JMS") was recently announced as a the scripter of WORLD WAR Z, THEY MARCHED INTO SUNLIGHT (a Viet Nam protest-themed film...is this still being handled by Paul Greengrass?), and last year sold THE CHANGELING (originally a Ron Howard project, now under the reins of Clint Eastwood).
And, somewhere along the line, JMS has committed to further BABYLON 5 projects - assuming this Summer's DVD fares well in the marketplace.

I hope, I read the article

Well, I was close. FF4 will not be FIRST, Maybe 3rd
-
If this takes the Surfer into space and the hell away from Earth. How about the Surfer getting into the middle of a 3-way war between the Sh'iar, Skrulls, and Kree with Mar-Vell, Super-Skrull, and the Sh'iar Imperial Guard involved. (Yeah right, like that would ever happen. It would cost 500 million dollars to depict...)

I think they will still make the movie, even if FF2...

...fails at the Box Office. There is too much hype around that character.
-
Garabaldi as anything, really.
-
i am not 100% sure what a Babylon 5 is, but as this project is unlikely to feature Jack Black, i approve.
-
They already know its shit so why waste time with the "reboot?"
-
were we not going to be treated to a Catwoman spin-off after the "success" of Batman Returns? no Michelle Pfffieeffffeerr, but it got made with Halle Berry, who in turn was supposed to be in a "Jinx" spin off after Die Another Day was going to be such a huge hit? talk about Six Degrees Of Comic Heaven.....

unless he gives Transformers a bad review.

<p>Remember the Jinx movie that was supposed to be a spin off of Bond? And what about Wolverine? And Magneto? All bullshit.<p/> <p>Good day.<p/>

He's also been writing Silver Surfer: Requiem
-
Woo hoo! Extra hoo!<br> Getting fired is the best thing that could happen to him! Now he has publicity and stuff! He gets help from everywhere! I lost my job because I called my boss a few hours too late, after I had an accident on my way to work and spent a week in hospital. Where is my Yahoo news article? Where are my job offers?
-
Didn't want to use the same joke twice.... but the big news is Memflix story now not only on CNN but TMZ, Hollywood reporter, etc. etc. I knew this would blow up in FOX's face....The AICN denizens are strong...Long Live Memflix
-
Memflix is getting his 15 seconds of fame. After that whore gets done telling his story to anyone who'll listen he'll probably get some kind of job....As a man slut. But do you see the part where he says he wants to become a "professional reviewer" HE'S TALKING TO YOU HARRY KNOWLES!!!!! Oh and save Memflix.
-
People will flock to FF2 just to watch the Surfer. It's too bad they messed up Galactus (what the hell, a tornado????) They should have made him a ship. Ah well I am one of the few that enjoyed the first FF and I'll be standing in line for the second.
-
As a such, the SS film should focus on the master-slave relationship as detailed by the German philosopher Hegel, leading to the breaking of the shackles of convention.
-
What a bunch of moronic PG-13 shitbags.
-
This Silver Surfer movie isn't even open for reviews, which means it's sucky, even for a bad movie. Why would they continue this crap? Seriously, who's connected to whom, I've love to understand it. Even the first FF looked so bad that I don't know anyone who even bothered to see it. And as much as I loved B5, JMS is a story writer, not a script writer. His dialog is only a small step above Lucas'. Having him as a producer or story consultant is a great idea however. But if he's to go anywhere, it should be to Lost. That's the Holllywood property that can most benefit from his expertise right now.
-
That the suspicious time for this announcement (1 fucking day before the movie opens) is more of Fox's PR bullshit, as to "assure" us the Surfer actually LIVES, instead of dying to save the Earth from Galactus? (And how the fuck could he do that anyway? It's freaking Galactus.)
-
Memflix is on IMDB news... we all knew this whole thing was to get publicity. Smart move !!!

Memflix probably is too, if, you know, memflix wasn't a plant. Some will come to save us, Memflix will come to harm us.

See, the whole Memflix thing is just giving fox more free advertisment for the film. Check it, an old SS series from the 90s animated just like a Kirby comic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZstpOjHDOM&mode=related&search= start at the first ep and work our way through. Addictive.
-
...to use the TinyUrl tool? It's right there in the talkback box; and it's very easy to use. That way your url's won't have all of those spaces that keep them from working.

fucking fox plants with their BS positive reviews. BOYCOTT!!!!!
-
And lots and lots of weighty existential scenes of the SS cruising the spaceways lost in his own headspace. Every admission comes with a tab of acid.
-
Way to cover your tracks there buddy. Well, at least we can trust his review now. I knew it was going to suck.
-
does not=plant. Guess Empire magazine is actually a Fox-owned greenhouse
-
Was kind of a pussy comic. I mean he surfed around from place to place feeling sorry for himself because he can't go back to his home planet and he has to feed Galacticus......Waaaaa Boo Hooo I got the power cosmic and I surf. I just wish he would have done more bad ass stuff but thats not really the point. I think he's like the stoner icon of comics. The Greatful Dead of Marvel.
-
ya, yer right. As a plant for Marvel, SS was created to cash in on the hippie/surfer/peacenik era of comics.
-
King Kong (2005) was probably the first one. That movie is great.

Memflix was right. Reviewers are saying the same thing
by SkeletonParty
They are saying the only thing good about FF:2 is the short running time. Now we know the Roy Stalin (Story In LA) review was a plant. <p>Memflix Rules! <p>Where is Harry's review of FF:2?

CGI main characters: Shrek 1, 2, 3, Toy Story 1, 2, Over the Hedge, etc, etc, etc

i always doubted that film companies actually scanned these sites but holy shit! memflix's negative review then a questionable "plant" review and then memflix gets fired. "fuck you film companies! come try to get me fired and i'll rape your grandma all wet and sloppy-like!"

I've got a feeling you won't hear from O'Reily but damn I wish he worked for another network he'd be all over this thing...

..but I looked over and Rupert Murdoch was laughing all the way to the bank, so I guess it's OK.
-
I totally support your right to say what you just did and Iam sure Memflix would feel the same way.. On the other hand others may not and even go so far as to quite you down one day.. On that day please remember MEMFLIX...He fought the good fight for all not just his $7.00 an hour job...

some fans of X3 almost had their learners permits.

If this movie can open lower than FF1 than Memflix will not have died in vain. For all you people saying this is free publicity for Fox, you could not be more wrong. This bad bad bad publicity. Please open poorly. I have not wanted a movie to flop miore in my entire life...besides the pg13 Alien vs predator...

JMS sucks rope. B5 is a joke. DS9 owns its ass.

The script has been highly touted around town so I gave it a read. Not as good as I was expecting. I could see Clint doing something cool with it, especially if Angelina stays attached to the lead, but I kept expecting it to get supernatural and it never did. It felt like a long, drawn-out episode of Law and Order: SVU. I think there's definitely a good story there and I like the idea of Clint making a period piece, but the script was definitely lacking in the thrills and chills department, and I didn't feel the lead character's grief over missing a child. Maybe my expectations were too high since the script is considered one of the best not-yet-produced scripts around town, but it didn't feel Clint-worthy to me. I'll hope for the best though.
-
Since he's actually worked on the comic. With all the crossover now between tv screenwriting and comics, it just makes sense that they would actually get writers from the comic actually involved in the movie. But outside of Frank Miller, this doesn't seem to be happening? Why the heck not? I'm sure Brian K. Vaughan would do some great work on a comic to film script, and I'd still love to see Joss' X3, or reboot with the Astonishing cast. Now I'm talking writing, not directing, just to be clear.
-
first the sexiest tomboy beanpole thing, now the Hulk 'brother' Hogan thing (I thought Lost's Desmond took that over). Maybe AICN has a time machine.
-
"A number of Ain't It Cool readers have rallied to Morrison's cause, some even offering him jobs like a cameraman gig in Mexico." Wow, that means some poor bastard at CNN actually had sit and read through all of our shitty posts! IPAMPILASH!

http://tinyurl.com/3y4d9k<p> And shouldn't Memflix have his own article and talkback here by now? Not that it's a free speech issue or anything. But it's an AICN story. <p> Actually, I don't hate Sony. My Sony VCR is offline because I spilled some water on the remote. but I checked the instruction booklet and if SPECIFICALLY says "Do not spill water on the remote, asshole". Oh, my bad.

You guys can't even get a reputable review of this movie and are balking at it's potential success. A spinoff of this movie and it's title character was inevitable, yet you act surprised when the suits give the nod to a director. Fuck you Harry, Merrick and anyone else on this site who constantly bash the fuck out of shit you're not getting payola to promote. Write a love letter about that shit, dickbags.

I'm as prone to it as the next guy, but jesus fucking christ are you serious? Defending my first amendment rights? I don't know whether to laugh or just bow my head in shame that someone could actually believe that. <br><br> Do you really think he gave two shits about free speech when he sent in his reviews? He wanted to drive traffic to his website and be "FIRST!" That's all. <br><br> Let me set up a scenario for you. <br><br> Suppose Memflix had been smoking pot while working the booth. Not a big deal, right? Who cares? The managers all know, they don't care, he gets his job done. No big deal. <br><br> A new manager takes over the theater and catches him sparking up a spliff. Fires him on the spot. <br><br> Was the firing wrong because he'd smoked at least 100 joints in the booth before and no one said "boo"? Or was he doing something that HE KNEW was wrong all along and just took for granted that he was being allowed to get away with it? <br><br> He should have said, "Well that sucks that I got suspended, but I probably shouldn't have been sending in spoiler filled reviews to notoriously shady and unprofessional entertainment gossip sites". <br><br> And for that matter, why do we automatically assume that everything Memflix says is 100% factual and everything his theater and Fox say is 100% a lie? Isn't it far more likely that they are both conveniently leaving out details so their stories sound better? <br><br> Because you know what the most likely scenario is? It's the pot smoking one. <br><br> Memflix writes reviews and wants people to got to his website. He sends early reviews to AICN to make sure people know his name and go to his site. His boss knows, and either doesn't have a full understanding or just doesn't care. Fox says, "Hey...there's a bunch of early reviews being released and it's all coming from this theater. Let's not work with them anymore." And the theater goes, "Oh shit! We're gonna lose a lot of money! We gotta fire this guy and suck up to Fox to make sure we don't lose our screeners!" So they suspend/fire him as a way to prove to Fox that they "take this sort of thing seriously". <br><br> But now Memflix is portrayed as some sort of heroic victim. He's a poor little David against a big giant Goliath. And it's stupid. He got called on doing something he shouldn't have been doing. That's ALL! <br><br> And I don't even blame Memflix really. I blame idiots who look for any excuse to flip off corporations while still feeding their fat faces with every piece of junk that comes down the pike. <br><br> And I blame hypocrites like Moriarity who know fuck all about journalistic ethics, and who has remained CURIOUSLY FUCKING SILENT on this matter since lambasting Fox and making a BFD about this in the first place. <br><br> What's the matter Mori? Did you realize that you might have jeapordized your "writing" career with your outburst? Or might have hurt Harry's "producing" career?<br><br> There, I'm done. I have no delusions that I'll change anyone's mind anymore than anyone will change mine. It merely annoys me when people achieve success (as Memflix surely will now) through infamy and pity parties rather than actually working hard and holding one's self to some sort of standard of ethics and accountability and I felt like venting.<br><br> Memflix = Paris Hilton.

the "spoiler-filled" review. <p>I don't think he had any spoilers. <p>He chose to write about the flick and got suspended. In fact, according to his website he can still work there if he chose, just not in the pre-screening thing that he liked. <p>Still, though . . . <p>Memflix = Mother Teresa
-
Memflix may not of been thnking about his first ammendment rights at the time he was writng said review.. But every writer does think about them when somebody tries to stop thier words for being made public..Hyperbole maybe..But if it got people to think about erosion of rights just for a minute Hey I'm happy.. But again I must ask you Dominic-Vobiscum what brings you to this site is it early reviews , leaked info, or just the talkbacks ..whatever it is chances are that it from some daring soul in the business who is taking a chance to give you what you seek.. Hyperbole ? me? maybe... Hipocrite / you? absolutely...

Essentially says it's significantly better than the first, however...still silly and not great.

Ouch!!!!!! Transformers and Harry Potter are our only hopes to redeem this summer. And, maybe The Simpsons.

HO can you mention MS's comics without mentioning Supreme Power. He takes DCs top characters and retells their stories as if they lived in the real world. For example, the superman type character is taken away from Ma and Pa Kent as a baby by the CIA. Great stuff.

Against The Evil Media giants..

Captain power is about the only thing I remember from JMS. Tried to watch Babylon 5, and it was too goofy. Not saying Captain Power wasn't. . .

I'm not even sure how it could be done, is there a way to make a convincing CGI Thanos? Anyhoo, that's the first thing I thought of when I read the part about looking for the older, X-Men audience. On-screen Thanos could be incredibly cool. Or horrific, if handled poorly.
-
grandaughter Nebula. The supporting characters in the Silver Surfer are more interesting than the Surfer. Not that that's a bad thing, they should just make an ensemble movie since after FF2 he will have freed himself from Galactus.
-
Adam Warlock, Gammora, Pip. It will be like LOTR with aliens.
-
It's not to early to start hassling him. Have the great Purple Pants-wearing giant Galactus. FF2 can be all a dream or something. myspace.com/galactuswearspurplepants also group of the same name on Facebook.

I was just thinking that, but I think it would be almost impossible to convince any studio to leave the story alone, and I don't think it would sell well with the public. One thing on my geek wish list is that I would love to see Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade done as an animated series.
-
We need it now.

I'd agree that when comic books were first created back in the 30's, they were made for and marketed to kids and teenagers. But the comic book medium evolved over the years. Comic books developed different niche markets, especially beginning in the 50's. Romance comics were marketed to young women, Mickey Mouse comics for the young kids, and so forth. A prominent senator even attacked the comics industry for the "excessive" amount of "adult" material in comics at the time, such as murder and scantly clad women, which led to the creation of the comics code. Comics creators were aware of this new adult audience and slowly adapted without angering the feds. Marvel even titled one series "Amazing Adult Fantasy" for a short time before it became the intro for Spiderman. Comics slowly incorporated adult themes into their stories. In the Fantastic Four, there were still the intergalactic adventures and colorful costumes that appealed to kids, but there was also the family drama that appealed to adults, such as Sue Storm worrying over the safety of her child. Read the fanmail pages of any of those old Marvel comics and you'll see most of them written by adult readers. The old Silver Surfer series, Stan Lee's pride and joy, had a particular adult bent, as the Surfer lamented about humanity's inherent violence to one another, racial prejudice, poverty, nuclear armageddon, and other issues. Green Lantern/Green Arrow by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams took it even further by covering those issues, and even tackled drug abuse. Again, read the fan mail pages from those comics, and you'll find that they're reasoned and well thought out letters written by adult readers. Comic books in those days were as much for kids as were sci-fi adventure films, (like Forbidden Planet or Day the Earth Stood Still) or sci-fi novels and pulp magazines.
-
better not be shown in the Silver Surfer movie. They covered that in FF2. Having him on Earth a second time would be fucking L-A-M-E and a budget saving cop-out. Show us the Surfer exploring crazy worlds we've never seen. Battling creatures that even Giger would run from. The budget will have to be HUGE for it to work.
-
honestly, that was a cop out in the worst way. I enjoyed FF2, with the exception of Julian McMahon, who sucks ass, and the stupid cloud that should have been Galactus. I hope JMS can give us a better Galactus than a giant fart cloud. and Peter Travers is the worst critic in mainstream media, even if he's right. death to Rolling Stone Magazine!

is it possible this thing stays below the 26% of it's much beloved predecesor? How do the execs see the first film and bring back the same creative team behind it. Oh right, 150 million dollars
-
So, right out of the CNN article, exactly what myself and others said- "there's somebody there working for (Malco) who is writing reviews in advance. That's all they said. No one asked us to do anything. We have been in business 95 years, and this is the first time anything like this happened. And this boy knew what he was doing was the wrong thing. ... He was in a position of trust and he violated that trust."
-
Stan Lee said this about co-creating the FF in 1961 (from Wikipedia)..."this once, I would do the type of story I mysef would enjoy reading...and the characters would the kind of characters I could relate to". I don't have my old comics collection on hand right now, but here's an excerpt of a fan letter from 1965 about Dr. Strange..."Hi! And the best to you from all points of the compass! The titanic and epic battles of the minds, and mystical occult battles of Dr. Strange and Baron Mordo are indeed exciting and awe-inspiring!" Here's a letter excerpt from a 1969 issue of FF... "Stan, through the use of both tragedy and comedy, has added emotions to characters who could easily be two-dimensional." Sorry, I don't think either of those two fans sounded like children. And how old are you, brobdingnag? You must be a child if you're on website and thread that's talking about a movie made for kids (FF), right? The truth is, fanboys have been on this planet since the first superhero was invented, since Lord of the Rings, since there's been the youthful spark in all of us that still craves for out-of-this-world fantastic adventures. Fanboys have never been just pre-teen kids with a comic book rolled up in their back pockets. They've been college students, men and women with families, doctors and lawyers, newstand owners, grandparents, and so on. In Japan, manga readers themselves are and have been of all ages. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby knew who they were writing for in 1961. Think it was just for kids? Why weren't there cute fuzzy talking animals walking around, too? Comics have always been written for everyone of all ages, just like sci-fi movies were for everyone. Fanboys up to this day haven't just been kids but adults who haven't given up on their imagination. I believe Frederico Fellini was also a comic book fanboy...

The cloest you can get to animated Infinity G is here: http://tinyurl.com/2exec8 start at Episode 1 and work yer way to 13. It's the SS cartoon that was drawn like kirby's work. Thanos is is ep 2 and Drax is in 4.

that toon. Most of the shows were kind of ponderous and boring, but that's how the comics were at times, too.
-
word. but that art and the chance to see Thanos, NOva and Drax animated ( in Kerby style) kicks ass.
-
judging from the reaction I saw today, I think The Silver Surfer is going to become a very popular character.

First, I never mentioned EC comics. Second, on who 60's comic books were marketed to. If you pick up any issue of Marvel Comics from the 60's, I have one in my hand, Strange Tales #136 (1964). you will find ads for an adult audience, as well as younglings. Let's see, page 9, an ad for an auto mechanics trade school. Page 14, sell Grit magazine. Page 25, an ad for a self hair trimmer, an ad soliciting for original songs and poetry, an ad on how to earn $200 in your spare time. On the inside back cover, an ad for a mail order U.S. Gov't Surplus store. If Marvel Comics at that time were marketed for kids, those ads seemly stupidly out of place, don't they? brobdingnag, you pwn in your dreams, friend... Please respond if you'd like another smackdown...
