DC Comics To Publish
VERONICA MARS: Season Four??

I am – Hercules!!
“I had a meeting with DC Comics last Monday and they want to do (Season 4) as a comic series," “Veronica Mars” mastermind Rob Thomas tells The Toronto Star. DC’s move may have been inspired by Dark Horse Comics’ new “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight” title, which has been burning up the sales charts. Thomas also offers his take on why The CW passed on another season of “Mars.” "At the end of the day [CW programming chief] Dawn Ostroff doesn't get to make the final call,” Thomas tells the Star. “Hers is an important voice in the room. But they're the little sister company of CBS. There was a pretty strong feeling that [CBS CEO] Les Moonves didn't want to do the show." CBS and Time Warner co-own The CW. The same article states that Thomas has accepted the position as showrunner on “Miss/Guided,” ABC’s upcoming Judy Greer sitcom about a guidance counselor who takes a job at her old high school. Thomas also reveals that the pilot he shot two weeks ago at his house with “Mars” star Enrico Colantoni is a dark comedy about Los Angeles caterers titled “Party Down.” He also has ideas for a romantic anthology series and a modern-day Western. (BTW, eveybody keeps writing to say the iTunes "Bitch Download Day" - with fans downloading the series finale of "Veronica Mars" in a show of economic might - is still on today, despite the "Mars" cancellation news. Between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. PT, the episode shot up from #60 to #35 on the iTunes "top TV download" chart. I, for one, am willing to spend another $1.99.) Read all of the Star’s story here.

Is the Buffy comic book really "selling like hotcakes?" Well, then, 23-skidoo, ya hep cats!

    I'm for it

    by JonJonB

I dumped the Buffy comic as soon as they tried to pass off "The Girl In Question" with some shitty excuse about Buffy-doubles (which was like the third panel, I think. If you write a bullshit idea, see it through, don't try to make up for it with more bullshit. From what I've heard, it didn't get any better (a returning not-so-big not-so-bad for example). VM still has some ends that are very loose, so get that comic made, Rob.

  • June 12, 2007, 2:24 p.m. CST

I'd rather read a hard-copy HEROES comic instead...

    by SpyGuy

Enough of these fucking PDF versions. Either start releasing the online HEROES comics as a monthly or put them in trade paperback collections. Oh, and give me a DOCTOR WHO comic that's more than 8-pages per month while you're at it...

Pound Sand re: Buffy comics popularity

    by Pennsy

The debut issue of Buffy 'season 8' is in its third printing, and the second issue is in its 2nd. So there is an audience, still, even after 4 years for it. I ordered the first 4 issues online, and that's how I found out about the reprintings.

  • June 12, 2007, 2:57 p.m. CST

    by Scramble Network

Yeah, Buffy is a Top 10 Comic, very hot. I bet VM would do very well, too. I do agree it would be hard to capture Kristen's style on the page, though I'd love to see someone try.

  • June 12, 2007, 3 p.m. CST

    by Pennsy

Cause the folks who mailed his network all those nuts for Jericho told him so.

XXVIII posted EXACTLY what I was going to say

    by snowpuff

I hope Rob Thomas has great success with the comic book, but Kristen Bell's performance was an almost irreplaceable, large part of the show. Even though Kristen Bell is not Veronica Mars... Veronica Mars is Kristen Bell. I feel like I'd be reading the comic book and think: That's not Veronica Mars, that's a comic book.

  • June 12, 2007, 3:03 p.m. CST

    I'll buy it!

    by Atomik Steve

Unless it's too teenage-girly. I have a feeling it will end up in their Minx line aimed at young girls. However, if it's similar to the show, I will buy it. Already purchased my Bitch is Back from iTunes today!

Actually off to a strong start with 'The Plain Janes'. And they have some kind of deal with the big bookstores. But I'm torn on if that's the right place for VM... that's never really been the show's audience.

a silver lining on an otherwise dark cloud:

as much as i love buffy season 8 in comic form, i wish i didn't have to settle for my favourite shows getting frakking cancelled and living on in comic form.

  • June 12, 2007, 3:31 p.m. CST

Bought it. 5 others did the same.

    by the_pissboy1

I convinced 5 other people to buy it today too. Comic, eh? Yeah, I'll look at that in a cold day in hell. enrico on a new show? Hm. Judy Greer always gets me to pay attention; just noticed on HDNET they were replaying Gary Shandling's alien movie and there he was fucking Judy. God, there's something about her that's so hot. Nicer rack than I expected too.

    by rickman

With great management choices like this one. Hell, Veronica should have been on CBS and not the Crap & Waste (CW) channel. How was Veronica going to ever get ratings against a show like House which attracts the same audience? I know I TiVOed one or the other every week.

    Translation from TV to print...

    by TheHichhiker

Mind can do funny things, having seen three seasons of the show and knowing well the character, it is a lot easier to map that knowledge onto printed form which leaves much to imagination than to any other medium (animated or radio play for example). <p><p>Although it almost seems like it would be even better to simply have books - as long as they are written by same (or at least similarly capable) writers. <p><p>I remember reading the leftover scripts for Crusade and Wonderfalls and while it was not the same as the actual show, it was a lot closer than I would have imagined.

Jumping Jeebus. Are you psychic or do you have some mutant power that commands people to do whatever you post? I know you were being sarcastic, but I couldn't help thinking --damn, I'd read a VM comic, I guess I'm an even bigger dork than I thought. I just didn't think it was the type of show that would transfer well to the page... Please say something snarky about Deadwood, Rome, Carnival, or maybe even Wonderfalls or Freaks and Geeks. I'd give 'em all at least a chance, say four issues.

"Do you guys care about a VM comic book"?

    by newc0253

yes. yes, we do. Seriously, what's the deal with you and VM, anchorite? You have a vendetta against the show or something? Can't you just be happy that it was cancelled and move on? Also, for an apparent non-fan of the show, i like that you profess insight ("anyone who watched the show watched it because of the actors and their chemistry") into why other people liked the show.

  • June 12, 2007, 5:43 p.m. CST

actually, Anchorite does get one thing right

    by oisin5199

about the chemistry and dialogue being the major attraction to fans. However, his logic about lining the pockets of the people you screwed you is flawed. If I like the characters (or the particular 'verse, if you will), I'm going to want to follow stories written in that particular universe. If they're well written, and fit with the tone of the show, and especially if they're written by the show's creator or under the direct supervision of the creator, than even better, and I'm happy to support it - thus the success of the recent Buffy comics. If anyone remembers, Buffy was a Dark Horse series while the show was still on, and they were non-canonical and mostly lite entertainment - although towards the end, covering the pre-Sunnydale days, the comic did begin to approach the brilliance of the show. Especially the divorce demons storyline. <p> anyhoo, if they went a darker, noir kinda Vertigo route with VM it could be interesting. Not Sandman Mystery Theatre dark but somewhat dark. As long as it's not teenybopper stuff, it could be good.

  • June 12, 2007, 6:29 p.m. CST

    Ill check out the comic

    by optimus122

I love comic books and the actors performances are seared into my mind so I can easily imagine them acting out the roles in comic book form. Of course I would much rather see it on tv but with ratings that bad there was no chance of it coming back again. Fuck Les Moonves. And anchorite , your allowed an just seem a bit too happy about it is big deal but thats why your getting some flack from VM fans here..but to each his skin off my azzz if you didn't like the show. I thought it was very well done especially the first 2 seasons.

    By the way

    by optimus122

Veronica Mars final episode is right at this moment the 15th most downloaded tv show on itunes and still rising. If anyone really thinks there are only 1 or 2 million fans that watch this show they are crazy. The dvd's are huge sellers too. The neilsen system is so whacked its not even funny.

  • June 12, 2007, 6:42 p.m. CST

    by Wungolioth

As of 7:40 PM EST, the episode has dropped to #29, so it has dropped off some. If you care, and you haven't ordered it, do so quickly.

  • June 12, 2007, 6:43 p.m. CST

    by optimus122

Yes this one didn't work out as well as the Jericho campaign did but of course Jericho at one time during the season had some 10 million viewers or so. Until they decided to do a 2 month break or some stupid shit like that.

  • June 12, 2007, 6:49 p.m. CST

    by optimus122

Whats your point brother? Do you have any way of checking how many different people bought episodes as compared to how many bought the same episode multiple times? I am sure a lot of people did buy multiple episodes , who cares? The fanbase is trying to show the network that we spend money on the show..thats why the dvd's sell so well. I could give 2 craps about patting the backs of mars fans , brother.

  • June 12, 2007, 6:55 p.m. CST

"most of the fans won't make the switch"

    by newc0253

it's quite a career you've made for yourself there, anchorite. Barely 24 hours ago you were VM's ersatz campaign analyst. Today, you're doing general market research on the audience for a VM comic. next thing i'll find is that you had an associate producer credit on the show. hell, anchorite, maybe you're rob thomas's angry dark side? I look forward to your next iteration, in any event.

  • June 12, 2007, 7:05 p.m. CST

    The beautiful thing is

    by optimus122

I don't have to prove anything , all the network cares about is money. If everyone with a neilsen box turned on Veronica Mars and then went outside for the night and never even watched 1 episode the network would still sell the highest ad rate they possibly could get for that neilsen rating. They care just about the bottom line , which is why the show is dead. If they cared about quality programming then they wouldn't have crap on like the pussycat dolls.

    by mollyunravel

as a die-hard buffy fan, i was all into the comic idea for season 8. then i got the first two and realized that i'm just not into comics enough. i don't have the patience to sit there and look at all the pictures... which is kind of the point. i found myself just reading the dialogue like a book and i was bored. so for rob thomas to say that he wants to make a comic out of season 4 is very disappointing to me. i'll keep my fingers crossd for a movie, even though i know that won't happen. and i love judy greer but i'm too wary of new shows - especially sitcoms - to really take a chance on miss/guided. i guess bsg is my only real *love to see* tv left for next year.

  • June 12, 2007, 8:03 p.m. CST

    only a good idea if...

    by omarthesnake

    (1) Rob Thomas actually writes at least some of it and oversees the rest. waving a hand and taking a check don't count. it has to have creative input from on top. That's why the Buffy comic is good and most comics based on TV shows suck monkeys. (2) they can capture Veronica's likeness well. halfassed artists or ones who would draw her with a Supergirl boobs and wasp-waist figure need not apply. (3) i don't have to read it. I grew sick of that show last season and hear from everyone who i know in RL who WAS a fan that it was even worse in third season. But for those of you who want it, more power to ya. I'll be waiting for the Cop Rock Season 2 comics with MP3 links on each page.

    don't buy Anchorite's line

    by oisin5199

"I was more critical of the campaign than the show itself." My ass. He's trolled every single Veronica Mars talkback and thrown his shit around. It's okay to have an opinion, but at least be honest about it. <p> Let's put it simply: if someone's a VM fan and they like intelligent comics (and all that reading and pictures doesn't hurt their little brains), and if it's written intelligently like the show, than they'll buy the comic (or at least download it). I just don't see why people slag such a good idea - to see stories that the show's writers intended being presented in this form, when otherwise they wouldn't see the light of the day. No one's forcing anyone to read a comic if they don't want to. But if you do, then it's good fun. What's the problem?

...proper, as Wildstorm have been on a bit of a licenced media related push for the past year or so now, what with their horror books (Nightmare On Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday The 13th) and the recent Supernatural comic spinoff. Not that I personally much care one way or the other to be honest, but yeah, anyway.

I'd buy the comic, if it's as good as Buffy Season 8: But I'd miss seeing Kristen Bell.

    don't ban anchorite!

    by newc0253

he was "marketing director for one of the largest marketing firms in the world"! AICN talkbacks need that kind of dedicated expertise! Without anchorite, we'd just be stuck with such lowly talkbackers as Bruce Willis, the inventor of cornflakes (yours truly) and the king of the polar bears (a regular firster).

also, snark doesn't work in print?

    by newc0253

someone better tell comic book writers like Whedon, Vaughan or Bendis. That's probably the reason their comics don't sell. Oh. Wait...

I say thee NAY! (in ref to Anchorite's banning)

    by Negative Man

<p>Anchorite had some good and lame points. Who doesn't here? Just because a majority disagrees with a person, that means their voice should be silenced? Hell, if that's the case, I would have been on the last banned train to Clarksville long ago.</p><p>Everyone loves a dissenting voice as long as it's dissenting on their side, I guess.</p>

    hard sell

    by Napoleon Park

VMars has a too small to live audience to begin with and only a fraction of that crowd reads comics and only a percentage of those would buy this comic.<P> So trying to find readers for a continuity heavy characterization based series would be a monumental uphill Sisyphusian task. The ONLY way this might have a shot would be to drop all continuity and the entire cast except for Veronica and her dad and relaunch/reinvent the series with Thomas' unused "Veronica Mars, FBI Girl" concept. Which might not be what Fans would expect from a book called "Veronica Mars Season Four". <p> Papercutz has boxed sets of the first four and second four all new full color Nancy Drew graphic novels by Petrucha and Murase priced at $29.95 each. The boxed set of graphic novels 1-4 also contains a Nancy Drew video game disc. I mean, if you want a story about a teenage girl detective solving crimes in her law enforcing fathers footsteps, why not go with the original? <p> And if you want a young female FBI cadet story, why not just license Karen Sisco or Clarice Starling for a comic book series?

    I agree, Napoleon

    by xHarleyQuinn

As an avid comic book reader, I would most certainly pick up VMars, but most of the people I know who watched the show have never touched a comic book in their life. The chances of them starting with VMars is pretty slim. I just cannot see DC having the success Dark Horse has had with Buffy.

Still can't get iTunes top 100.

    by Shan

Following all the instructions but all I can see is a top 10 list and that's it. I tried installing itunes but I still can't see the top 100. I wonder if being in Australia has anything to do with it? I know I can't actually download the episode but I am interested in the top 100 data. Sorry! Some more help please if possible. Thanks.

I truly did like VM, but I also liked Karen Silas in "Under Suspicion", and I let that go pretty quickly.

    by tonagan

Is she going to run into Swamp Thing?

I'm on board for this as long as Rob Thomas is working on the story arcs.

Why do all the good ones have to come to an end?

    by desaraev

Why do all the good ones have to come to an end? I loved both Veronica Mars and Cupid (both CW shows). I love the idea of watching her grow up then head off to the FBI. I love relating to her. Found this on Netflix and have been addicted ever since. They should have hulu, NBC, or ABC pick this up and finish it. Or even Marvel or DC. Someone should just pay for it and finish filming it. The crime noir feminine lead here rocks. I can't wait until Netflix and hulu (ie the fans) are the ones who get to choose what airs and what gets cut. That's how Chuck got saved, the fans (and Facebook/Twitter).
