Rob Thomas To TV Guide: MARS 'Officially Dead'!!

Published at:  Jun 11, 2007 5:39:34 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

"'Veronica Mars' is officially dead," according to a Monday email authored by series mastermind Rob Thomas.

“I think Dawn Ostroff genuinely would have liked to have continued on with a version of the show, but there was too much resistance around her,” Thomas told TV Guide’s Mike Ausiello Monday. “At the end of the day, it would've been kinder had the band aid simply been ripped off rather peeled away in than this agonizingly slow manner.”

Fans have already bought and paid for a huge half-ton shipment of Mars Bars and other candy slated to be delivered to The CW’s offices Thursday. Their hope was the foodstuffs would precipitate a "Jericho"-like resurrection of the series.

Ausiello suggests redirecting the candy shipment to Warner Bros.' feature division, where Thomas would like to get a "Veronica Mars" movie set up.

No telling how this news will affect a planned Tuesday mass iTunes download of “The Bitch Is Back,” which is now the series - rather than just the season - finale of “Veronica Mars.”

The silver lining for fans is Thomas is already rumored to have been approached to serve as showrunner of “Miss/Guided,” a midseason ABC series about a high school guidance counselor starring another fabulous blonde, Judy Greer ("Arrested Development," "Love Monkey").

Find all of Ausiello’s post here.

so maybe then they'll release some sorta box set with all 3 seasons? since i never bought any that would be swell. i think fans should be glad it lasted as long as it did...this could have easily been one of those many shows cancelled after the 1st season.

I'd rather they shift things up in a more adult oriented world for a movie. Like the rumored FBI pitch or whatever. No more geeks vs. jocks, frat guys vs. feminist cliches.

I figured something like this would happen

    by buffywrestling

I remember when Angel was cancelled, everyone from showrunners to critics was saying that the show was done but the network still had their sound byte of a deadline deflecting any outcries. At least in Angel's case, they informed the cast and crew somewhat in advance so they could script the final eps. I took a "wait and see" approach with Angel because, even though I just sent in a lousy postcard, I was burnt by the abrupt cancellation of Firefly. After that experience, I thought to myself "never again" when it came to WB/UPN and now the CW.

Good try there, folks. I am sorry about your show. Been there; done that. However, a wrap -up movie to include on the box set would be awesome.+

    by tvguy4566

Her first movie was crap, but Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jessica Beil both had clunkers while they were with the WB/UPN. Anyone remember Simply Irresistable (biggest case of false advertising ever), Harvard Man, Rules of Attraction, or Summer Catch? Even Cruel Intentions was a very modest hit. I think both those stars are the model for Bell's movie career. Both had mediocre starts in movies and are now making several million a film. Bell has four movies coming out in the next year or two. She looks to have more work than she can handle.

"THESE PEOPLE IS THE STUPIDIST OF MUCKN MORONS-- I MUST STAND UP FOR ALL THATIS LOGICAL AND SMRT OR THE AICN TALKBACKS WILL FALL!" Calm it down some. Man, I helped big time with the campaign, and it took maybe an hour of my day. For most people, it was 2 or 3 bucks and 5 minutes. And yes, most people realized it has almost no chance of success. The other thing that you keep harping about-- dude, we GET that the shipment itself doesn't do much. What we hoped was to get PUBLICITY and a wave of buzz for the show going. The way to do that is to get reporters and bloggers writing up the fan efforts. I don't get why you're not connecting that. You keep saying it was the publicity that saved Jericho, but the press was writing up the nuts campaign. So... but please, scream at me and other some more, have a fucking embolism pop in your brain out of frustration. Let the anger go.

Look, people do a lot of things for the art that entertains them. Please don't act like you're above it, especially when you're on a Talkback on AICN. God. by my pretty pony

I don't know why people are blaming The CW for the show's cancellation. The ratings were horrible. Even "One Tree Hill" and that insipid "Pussycat Dolls" show had better ratings. The CW had every right to cancel VM. At least it got 3 full seasons, which is more than a lot of great shows that have been cancelled before their time have gotten. Not to mention, the quality of the show was steadily declining. We hardly ever saw Wallace and Weevil in season 3, were subjected to the extremely annoying Piz, they turned Logan into a boring loser, and they killed off Sheriff Lamb! I also think Rob Thomas was very foolish ending it the way he did. He knew there was a very good chance his show would be cancelled and chose to leave the fans unsatisfied. If you want to watch a quality show on The CW that actually improved in its second season, watch "Supernatural" on Thursday nights.

Solid show, very few clunkers. AND the season finale for season 2 should be the model for every 'bubble' show ever. They tied up the show's main story and introduced another without really involving viewers in its outcome. Excellent way to go, as it would have been a perfectly acceptable SERIES finale had the show not gotten picked up (which, luckily, it did).

Will also be the nail in the coffin of the CW. VM may not have had a ton of viewers, but I feel strongly that the dedicated VM audience out there will do the right thing and not watch anything else on the CW from this point on. It's too bad, as they had an opportunity to do the right thing, like CBS has done with Jericho and NBC has done with Friday Night Lights. Sorry, CW, but you've permanently lost me as a viewer. Angel

    by shan

Well, I believe in the case of Angel, the WB admitted they'd made a mistake in hindsight.

Which was obvious given all the replacements for Angel were much less successful and still cost them just about the same to make.

Unfortunately, by that time, it was too late to bring it back on. Which is a shame, just 12 episodes, or maybe even 6 would have been enough to fashion a slightly less abrupt ending.

I wanted to take the night to see what the VM base was thinking.

The general sentiment seems to be keep going. Now, that may sound crazy, but the bottom line is, nothing is truly official until those contracts expire. JERICHO was 'officially' cancelled, too.

So, VM fans, take some heart. There's no good reason to quit now-- let's not take no for an answer until Friday gets here. The iTunes mass purchase campaign needs to be BIG tomorrow. Also, I'm posting phone numbers and emails over at The Scramble Network-- its time to start politely phonebombing the hell out of the CW offices.

Herc, please keep up the fight. AICN has been a HUGE part of our success, really things got started right here. PLEASE help us get the word out-- everyone needs to start buying VERONICA MARS' final episode "THE BITCH IS BACK," NOW!! Let's make it a big hit on the iTunes charts!

We'll stop bothering them on Friday, but til then let's keep going!

To the talk backer who mentioned Serenity. Serenity broke even on the world wide scale of release and is making money on the DVD release. Also Serenity had RAVE reviews, Orson Scott Card said it was the finest Sci Fi movie EVER MADE. So come now.... hell I didnt see Firefly OR Serenity until after the film was on DVD. And many browncoats are discovering the film and series this way, I would bet a rerelease now would have a larger Box office... Ive never seen Veronica Mars, so I am indifferent so far... anything about the show that is a selling point? Rob's a pro in the business, he knows better than to go out with a tantrum. For all we know, Dawn Ostroff IS fighting for the show, and can't get it through to her bosses. How do we know? Besides, if he burns the bridge, what good would it do? He may have other show ideas, and there's no reason to alienate a network.

    OK...

    by wungolioth

I drank the Kool-Aid one more time, and ordered the VM finale on ITunes. I hope they're paying attention at The CW. You would think it might be smart to leave an option open in case half the new shows needed to be replaced 6 weeks(or less) into the season.

Remember, VM, when I promised to cancel you last?

    I lied.

Sorry...I was watching "Commando" last night.

Im glad its dead.. the show sucked, it appealed to guys who are on the verge of being a pedophile.. i watched it once and i thought the dad was creepy, like he was banging veronica or something. Plus, she is a horrible actress.

Quick! Where's Logan and his rage on?

    by skyroom80

Yes, I sent 3 Mars Bars. Yes, I'm downloading the final episode from iTunes. Even knowing that it won't make any difference. What would have really helped? Someone tell Logan Echolls about this threat to Veronica, let him get his rage on, and watch him storm into the executive offices of the CW and beat the holy crap out of someone, anyone. That would have saved the show. I'm going back to the nice land of denial now.

Whatever, Dawn Ostroff is shooting herself in the foot.

    by novaman5000

Seriously, "FARMER TAKES A WIFE"? It's like they're purposely trying to drive away viewers from the CW... The only thing even remotely interesting on the network now is smallville, and that's sort of stretching it. Now there really is NO reason to watch the CW. They're doing an AWESOME job running it. Keep up the good work, idiots.

    Anchorite: Mars Bars

    by skyroom80

There's a British store in my town that sells UK Mars Bars. They're more like a Milky Way than a Snickers, or maybe a cross between those two.

I know I've had a U.S. Mars Bar a long time ago, and I remember it being more like a Milky Way.

    A VERONICA MARS movie?

    by thegreatwhatzit

Not likely, especially if NANCY DREW tanks.

You were supposed to send Mars bars? Oops, my gf dispatched a box of Chunky (hope they forward it to Drew Carey, he'll probably be a shoo-in for one of the network's sitcoms).

I started watching Alias during season 4. Well, technically I rented seasons 1-3 on DVD while tivoing season 4, and then watched season 4. Then in season 5 it got the axe.

    by mcfrye

The show is dead. There were how many viewers for Vernoica Mars over three years? Two million, tops? Even if all of you stopped watching CW they wouldn't be missing much (nor would they give a shit).

like being heartbroken by a bitch you love

    by mr_x

    who keeps fucking you over.

for the last time RIP veronica mars, KB will go onto bigger and better things, ( well i hope so) i thought SMG was great in buffy and she's done fuck out of interets outside it. KB mix it up a bit and get some good roles, move onto biggger and better things.
the guy who plays her dad should also do well, i remember seeing him ona comedy show thing, wasnt outstand but in VM he excelled
as for dick, mac, wallace, logan and weevil hmm not too sure, they seem very typecastable roles. get out there boys and girls and get some juicy roles
what a bitch, VM gone before its time. CW you are fucked. no honestly, i only fast forward thru smallville out of habit, you've shot yourself in the foot

"A false Kara already appeared in the third season finale, but was revealed to be a regular human girl who disappeared ten years before and had been brainwashed by Jor-El."

I would tone down the unnecessary name-calling, honestly.

Who knows? But I just wanted to point out that that may not have been "Supergirl" Supergirl.
