THE TALE OF TWO SISTERS gets a lead and it's noneother than Betty Brant... or Starla Grant, if you prefer...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Elizabeth Banks is a cutie. 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, SPIDER-MANS 1-3 and SLITHER... she's got that adorable, but super sexy look.

Maybe THE TALE OF TWO SISTERS will be her THE RING and she'll pull a Naomi Watts, get herself some wide-spread recognition beyond that of her current group of stalkers (ie people like me).

I like the original film alright (especially the "big scare" moment), but it's not all that amazing and when it came out you could really feel J-Horror was about out of steam.

Dreamworks is funding the flick, Thomas and Charles Guard direct. Banks plays the cruel stepmother character. Maybe a new dimension of hotness, eh?

    Hollywood doesn't have a fucking clue anymore how to make a decent horror movie. The crown now officially moved to the UK where with movies like The Descent and 28 Weeks Later they've earned it, as Hollywood has no sense and/or talent but to make crappy asian remakes or let hacks like Eli Torture Porn Roth make the headlines.
    (As for J-horror, assuming "J stands for Japan, the original Tale of Two Sisters is South-Korean.)

    The original TALE OF TWO SISTERS came out in 2003, the exact same year as Takashi Shimizu's first Japanese JU-ON movie, which is infinitely less artistic and watchable as TALE OF TWO SISTERS. So explain to me how J-Horror (an inappropriate term here since Korea isn't Japan) had run out of steam in 2003 if you think JU-ON is such a great film... Please. You really need to stop writing about Asian films or at least stop acting as if you know anything about them. You don't. The fact that your quote is on a DVD cover doesn't make you an expert.

    Anyway, the original is about the only Korean movie I really really love. The soundtrack and cinematography though is really what makes the movie. Slow, light waltz and beautiful images in contrast to the inner struggles of the girl... brilliant. Unless Hollywood really manages to put a completely new spin on the story I don't see how this will top the original.

    I know it gets it's name from Japan but I always assumed J-Horror referred to a type of horror film that came from Asia, not just from Japan. Phone, from South Korea has been referred to as part of J Horror. But then again the Angry Talkbackers are always right….

    It didn't leave a huge impression on me, but that could be because I saw it after overdosing on Asian scaries. It was nicely filmed though. Fingers crossed they don't make a complete hash of the (sigh) US remake.

    Check out David Kalat's book J-Horror. Coincidentally, I've started putting together a review of it for this week's AICN Anime column. Kalat argues that "J-Horror" is a non-ideal terms that has been and can be applied to a sub-genre of horror movies that could be thought of as the "dead wet girl" movies. The Ring, Ju-On, ect. He present Two Sisters as part of that movement, and says "'K-Horror' takes everything that is wrong about the term 'J-Horror' and makes it worse."

    I rather like the original , t's creepy , nicely filmed and has great music .But really it just doesn't seem strong enough to remake.The fact that it was Korean, was a big part of it's appeal/interest , once Americanised it's just going to be run of the mill.Why don't peaple just watch the original..subtitles aren't that big a deal!

    Cause the original wasn't all that great. Normally I love the originals and hate the american remake stuff, (cough cough, the Eye starring Jessica Alba, cough cough)
    But tale of two sisters wasn't all that scary, creepy, or original. It was really mostly a knock off of "The Other". Not the movie with Nicole Kidman. The one with John Ritter about the murderous little boy.

    J-Horror, K-Horror, whatever...

    ...I hate these stupid little categorizations anyway, and I think that it's all just lazy American generalizations made by people who couldn't tell a Japanese person from a Korean (or Chinese for that matter) if they were standing side-by-side reciting the declaration of independence in their respective native languages. And I hate all the heavily atmosphere-reliant crap that usually fits into the "Letter-Horror" category. Ringu was simple-minded and cheap, and so was Ju-On. Boring movies that play more like videos for Asian metal bands or something. The whole "dead kid" vibe is so the '70's dressed up in a kimono. Tale of Two Sisters was not one of these movies. Sure, it had the dead kid thing going and everything, but it wasn't that simple-minded sort of "let's throw a bunch of little tykes in there in pancake make-up staring from under the bed because child mortality is just so creepy and disturbing"; It was more a tragic melodrama, with ghostly overtones. I would categorize it more alongside movies like Memories of Murder or Chan-Wook Park's work, simply because it works off of the human drama inherent in the core story, rather than being built around the cheap scares that people seem to think are such an Asian cinema delicacy. The above-mentioned titles are non-horror films that contain elements of horror, but more importantly, they are acutely human stories, about characters as opposed to being about water-damaged tenements or creepy wells. Just like The Host is firstly about a screwed-up family taking matters into their own hands when they get no help from official sources. Any "horror" moments that occur in ATOTS do so as a result of the family tragedy that is at the heart of the story. Most of the best horror from any country works in this way. Rarely is a top-drawer horror movie made by a filmmaker who lives only to make horror. There's just usually no genuine sense of humanity, which is what makes horror horrible when it happens to someone. Do I think that A Tale of Two Sisters should be re-made in America? No fucking way. I won't see it. Largely because I think it will be made in the same spirit as remarks that suggest that the original is on the same level as- and categorizable with- crap like Ringu, Ju-On and The Eye, which would be just very wrong, because it's so much more elegant and restrained and thoughtful than any of those other films.

    ATOTS is "longhaired vengeful Asian female ghost horror" only on the surface, and turning those conventions around and making it more than that is what makes it a classic of the genre (for that matter, that's what makes Ringu and Ju-On worthwhile as well--they twisted the genre in their ow ways, Ringu by throwing us a "red herring" with the curse's "escape clause" and ultimately making the cure worse than the curse, and Ju-On by deconstructing the genre). These three titles, IMO, are without equal; most everything else in Asian horror has been disposable.

    There was an article in the L.A. Times a while back where Kim Ji-Wun was asked which actors he saw in the roles for a remake, and he mentioned Billy Bob Thornton as the father (great choice), Julianne Moore as crazy stepmom (also excellent), and Scarlett Johanssen and Dakota Fanning as the sisters (odd combo, but interesting).

    TWO SISTERS ..BAD?!

    There's alot of bad asian horror, I think 'Phone' is atrocious, the 'Juon' films aren't really that good once you've seen 'ringu', 'Marebito' and 'shutter' are pretty awful. 'A tale of two sisters' was one of the few that took a different route and was a bit more psychological and involved a bit of thinking and had a great atmosphere and a classy score. If that makes it 'out of steam' then so be it. Considering how many shit films this site wanks off I think it's a bit bloody rich to knock a very good movie and even hint that a remake could top it. So many great books out there that could be made into films, so many fucking lazy studios.

    A Tale of Two Sisters was not only a very good ghost story but a true work of art. An amazing, psychological thriller which I still often think about, 3 years after seeing it at the cinema. I am very surprised that Hollywood are remaking it. They will probably explain the ending, thinking the ambiguity was some sort of plot flaw.

    scariest movies ever. I was really unimpressed. There was some neat stuff with the typical pale, long haired Asian girl standing on the girl's bed out of nowhere, but I was pretty underwhelmed. Maybe I should try watching it again in a better mood.

    As mentioned before, it's friggin Korean, and you made a mistake - admit it!
    And as for K-Horror being 'everything that's wrong with J-Horror' or whatever you quoted... frig sake - Korea's given us the best Asian films in the past few years... The Host, OldBoy, the Sympathies and this.
    Just cos wet scary girls are part of asian mythology doesn't make them copycats, just as the West's vampire/werewolf films aren't immediately written off by 2nd rate hacks as derivative (when in fairness most of them should be).

    ok, so it has less BOO moments then Ju-On has, but it's all about the build up of tension. and that one scene in car where brother's wife remembers what she saw under the cupboard... DAMN!
    that scene scared the shit out of me more then both Ring and Ringu's "death girl in closet" and all of Ju-On's [sore throat]AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA[/sore throat] put together.

    Seriously, I think Tale of Two Sisters is my favorite movie of the last five or ten years. I saw it in a dinky, run-down theater in NYC and was blown away by how engrossing and terrifying it was. And terrifying in the good, physchological way. Quint can fuck off with his off-hand dismissal of the film. But what can you expect from "The Defenders of Hostel II"?

    Like everyone else here has said, it's Korean, not Japanese. I don't know who ScottGreen is, but quoting someone who thinks that Korean films are inferior to Japanese films (at least in the last 5-8 years) is no way to make an argument. ATOTS was directed by Ji-woon Kim, who is not just some hack tossing off assembly-line horror. He also directed a film called 'A Bittersweet Life', which is AMAZING. If you didn't love the movie, I really don't give a fuck, but let's just settle down and have an actual ASIAN cinema fans report the ASIAN cinema around here.

    Alexandre Aja is remaking INTO THE MIRROR

    Really funny that you should ask about Aja in this thread, blindambition. So yeah, Aja is currently filming a remake of the Korean horror movie INTO THE MIRROR under its new, shortened title MIRRORS. It's filming in Rumania with Jack Bauer as the male lead. I don't have very high hopes for it. Wish Aja would direct something original or a book adaptation instead. I dug the HILLS remake but I still think he's wasting his considerable skills working on remake after remake.

    Actually, Scott Green's quote was saying that J-Horror as a term is bad, and K-Horror *as a term* is worse. I'm not sure if that's supposed to excuse Quint or what, though. The accuracy of describing A Tale Of Two Sisters as J-Horror aside, saying "J-Horror was about out of steam" is pretty fucking absurd. A-Action has run out of steam! I don't want to see any more movies about white people firing guns!
