Bill Murray comes out of hiding! CITY OF EMBER calls!!

Published at:  Jun 11, 2007 3:52:06 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This is the first Walden Media project that's actually piqued my interest.

One, it's the next film from Gil Kenan who directed the awfully good MONSTER HOUSE. Two, so far they have Toby Jones (INFAMOUS and -upcoming- THE MIST) and Saoirse Ronan (ATONEMENT) in the cast. And three, Bill Murray has just joined up.

It sounds like this is going to be a live action movie, but I'm not 100% sure on that, so don't quote me. The original book is by Jeanne DuPrau and it's about an insular, dark place without any light whatsoever, barring the illumination that comes from the street lamps. One day the street lamps begin to dim, the power source failing. The movie is the adventure to find out why this is happening and what might exist outside of this world.

Sounds interesting, the cast is great so far and Kenan had a helluva debut. This is one to watch.

Loved Monster House. Saw it in 3D and it was great fun, much better than the rest of last year's animation. Toby Jones was superb in Infamous (and good in a small parts in Finding Neverland and Painted Veil). But simply having Bill is enough to get me there. This'll be great.

Apparently Murray is playing "the larger-than-life mayor of Ember" and Jones will be the mayor's right-hand man. Murray and Jones playing off each other could be great.

    Here's the plot. *SPOLIERS*

    by geekzapoppin

Typical dystopia. Communist society failing. Food running low. Building materials the same. At twelve, everyone is assigned their job within the community. One girl finds a letter that seems to be instructions to the community for what to do on a certain date in order to leave the community. The letter gets mangled before she can read it so she sets about deciphering what is left in order to save the community. She gets in trouble with the Mayor of the city who is obviously corrupt.

    *SPOILERS*

The city is actually underground. People fled there two hundred years prior due to what can be assumed to be a nuclear war on the surface. The children born to the original refugees were purposely kept "in the dark" about this so that they would not miss the surface. The box holding the instructions was to be opened two hundred years later by the current mayor. It was opened early by the main character's great grandfather, who had been mayor, and hidden in her house.

The book isn't bad, but it's fairly predictable. I'm assuming that Murray will play the Mayor.

    Quint buy a flash recorder!

    by gride9000

If you want a fully functioning interview machine that will transfer to pro tools or whatever editing program, I've your awnser. Get a battery powered flash recorder. Brands: Marantz is middle of the road, M-audio is cheap, and the sony pro with condenser mics is overkill. That sony is for more for concert recording. The Marantz has been an AV standard since inception of both Marantz and AV. Good luck with the upgrade....

The book's well-written, but the whole sequence

    by creasybear

where Lina and Doon try to decipher the note won't play very well in a movie, I don't think. The plot itself is a thinly veiled message to youngsters to preserve resources. It has the kind of see-it-coming plot twist that M. Night is famous (infamous?) for. Again, though, very well written.

    by larry of arabia

City of Ember, People of Sparks, and the prequel Prophet of Yonwood. Can't you just make a kickass one-off movie? This is the worst legacy of The Lord of the Rings. All of these f-in trilogies.

    by jig98

and yes, once again. monster house was excellent {steve buscemi and jon heder stole the show} and anything with bill murray is an automatic good sign.{except for charlie's angels and the garfield sequel}. gil kenan did a live action small arthouse family comedy called "theme park" with chris evans, mark ruffalo and tim robbins before giving up on that to do monster house. i think if he does a sequel to monster house sometime after doing this other flick with bill murray, that should be part 2-d animation and part live action and see how that turns out.
