Monday Brings Back BIG LOVE And XY!!

Published at:  Jun 11, 2007 1:08:24 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

To review:

“Big Love” is a generally fascinating take on all the wackiness going on out there in Utah, likely this nation’s reddest state.

And wackiness it is. Mormons, who apparently do not look kindly upon caffeine and alcohol, pretty much run Utah. So in “Big Love” the wilder Mormon teens have to get loaded on bottles of cough syrup.

In real life, Mormonism was founded by a notorious polygamist, a guy named Joseph Smith (1805-1844). Smith said his practice of polygamy was God’s idea. As I understand it, Smith said if he didn’t marry all of his 30-odd wives simultaneously, God would kill him. (As it turned out The Almighty was the least of Smith’s worries; he was shot to death in Illinois by a huge mob of anti-Mormon activists.)

So bigamy became all the rage among the Mormons. Under the direction of church president Brigham Young (1801-1877), a Mormon named Orson Pratt in 1852 publicly announced that the church was practicing plural marriage under commandment of God. (A ballsy move; this was just four years after Mexico ceded to the U.S. the Great Salt Valley on which the Mormons had settled.)

Now get this. Today, Mormons disdain polygamy! They banned the practice in 1890. This is presumably because the nation’s (far more populous) monogamist Christians, who probably thought Brigham Young was a maniac, pressured the U.S government to outlaw polygamy via the Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887.

But many a diehard polygamist Mormon fundamentalist, rather understandably, called bullshit. Was the U.S. government now a higher authority than God Himself? They split from the church and segregated themselves from monogamist society. These fundamentalists are something akin to the fundamentalist sect that produced both Roman Grant and Bill Henricksen.

Anyone straddling that line between the Fundamentaist Mormanism and the government-approved “real” Mormonism is going to lead a complicated life, and probably an interesting one. “Big Love” has many interesting characters.

Chief among these is Roman, the fundamentalist uberbigwig with a penchant for new teen wives younger than his own grandchildren. Fascinating also is Rhonda Volmer (Daveigh Chase), Roman’s latest teen fiancée, a snotty brat who enjoys the prestige afforded by Roman’s interest but may secretly hope to use showbiz to flee Utah before the repulsive and elderly Roman can paw her.

Bill’s first wife, Barb (the wonderful Jeanne Tripplehorn, of "The Firm"), grew up a regular Republican Mormon, but got sucked into Bill’s weirder world via a cancer scare. The management skills fostered by her teaching background serve her well in her post-monogamy life.

Bill’s second wife, Roman’s daughter Nicki (the wonderful Chloe Sevigny, of "Boys Don't Cry"), was introduced as a major flake with a credit-card addiction, but as the series wore on we learned she was likeably steely and resourceful, and fearless in the face of adversity – whether that adversity be Roman’s menacing thug of a son (her own half-brother) or Barb’s judgmental sister.

Bill’s third and youngest wife, Margene (the wonderful Ginnifer Goodwin, of "Walk the Line"), fascinates in part because she remained such an enigma even after the first season ended. Bill met her while she was working in his store, but her background seems to be neither Mormon nor Mormon fundamentalist, and she seemed at one point to be contemplative of throwing in with the monogamists across the street. So was it just Bill’s good looks that lured her into her strange circumstances, or is there more to it?

The HBO promos suggest we’ll learn a lot more about Margene’s secret origins via flashbacks this season. So I’ll be tuning in for that at least.

Fans of “Veronica Mars” might be willing to check out the series just for the young-adult supporting cast, which features in recurring roles Amanda Seyfried (Lilly Kane), Tina Majorino (Mac Mackenzie) and Kyle Gallner (Beaver Casablancas). (“Waterworld” fans will remember that a much shorter Majorino worked with Tripplehorn 11 years ago as well.)

What did the talkbackers have to say when “Big Love” first hit HBO May 12, 2006?

Made it 34 min before the boredom was too much to take. The show stinks.

“HypeEndsHere” said:

How does HBO describe the series’ June episodes?

JUNE 11 - Episode #13: "Damage Control." In the aftermath of her "Mother of the Year" debacle at the governor's mansion, Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn) retreats into her own world, leaving Nicki (Chloë Sevigny) and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) to take up the slack. Hell-bent on learning who betrayed the family, Bill (Bill Paxton) gathers evidence against Home Plus employee Wendy (Jodie Markell). Having nearly succumbed to Wanda's (Melora Walters) poisoning, Alby (Matt Ross) urges Roman (Harry Dean Stanton) to take revenge against Joey (Shawn Doyle) and Bill. Continuing to track suspects, Bill makes dinner plans with neighbors Carl (Carlos Jacott) and Pam Martin (Audrey Wasilewski), but Barb wants no part of the evening. Meanwhile, Wanda faces an inquisition at Juniper Creek, and Joey feels the squeeze from Roman, despite Bill's assurances that Roman will drop his charges in the wake of a state investigation. At home, Sarah (Amanda Seyfried) meets Scott (Aaron Paul), an older suitor, at an ex-Mormon meeting. Written by Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer; directed by Daniel Minahan.

JUNE 18 - Episode #14: "The Writing on the Wall." Home Plus billboards have been defaced, leading Bill and Don (Joel McKinnon Miller) to scramble for repairs and rethink Bill's public face on Home Plus. Registering for college courses, Barb's check bounces, and the culprit turns out to be Nicki. At Juniper Creek, Joey finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place, sending Nicki, accompanied by Margene, on a remedial trip to the compound. Rebuked by Roman, Alby looks to settle his vendetta. Now working at Home Plus, Ben (Douglas Smith) comes clean to Brynn (Sarah Jones) about his family, while Sarah is caught in a lie with Scott. In the midst of crises, Bill and Barb forget Nicki's anniversary, and Joey makes a decision that will have far-ranging implications. Written by Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer; directed by Sarah Pia Anderson.

JUNE 25 - Episode #15: "Reunion." Bill and Nicki drive to Juniper Creek for a family reunion - and a council vote that Bill hopes to leverage against Roman in Joey's case. Arriving at Lois' (Grace Zabriskie) cabin, they are surprised to find her brother Eddie (Brian Kerwin) in residence, overseeing Lois' new laundromat investment. At home, Barb catches Ben in a compromising position with Margene, and Sarah later catches him in an even more compromising one with Brynn. Ashamed, Ben considers pledging himself to Straight Edge, a group of hard-liners. Margene decides to call Cindy (Judith Hoag) about Barb, but ends up complicating their estrangement when Cindy changes her phone number. At the compound, Alby refuses to toe the party line, which results in Nicki and Bill cutting short their visit, just as a family group photo is about to be taken. Rhonda (Daveigh Chase) pledges herself to Roman, but ends up having second thoughts. Back home, Bill discusses a radical, polygamy-proof business option with Don. Written by Dustin Lance Black; directed by Alan Poul.

ABC Family’s “Kyle XY” also has its second-season premiere Monday night. I think it finally explains why Kyle has no belly button. 2.1 introduces Jessi XX, who is also naval-challenged and may be all slutty and evil as well!

Look! Another press release!

    let the mormon bashing begin

    by specialspecial

Anyone who practices polygamy today has nothing to do with the LDS (mormon) church. They are excommunicated. Polygamy was practiced because so many men in the early church were killed. The number of women left with children and no husband necessitated a system to provide for all of the homeless families. Because women vastly outnumbered men in the church, some men were appointed to take on multiple wives in order to make sure everyone had somewhere to live. Mormons are an easy target, but get facts straight, instead of talking about Joseph Smith, an "apparently notorious polygamist".

It's really hard to find quality FAMILY entertainment these days. I love Heroes and The Shield etc etc, but really much of the great prime-time shows are about people murdering each other. Kyle XY is incredibly saccharine, I admit, but it's something I can watch with my folks AND my nephews. That's a rarity that I'm grateful for.

    also for specialspecial

    by laughtrack

Okay, so I've never registered or commented here before, but reading specialspecial's comment drove me to it.

specialspecial is obviously Mormon as that is exactly what they teach you in the church, word for word. I was raised Mormon, faithful for 24 years, to find out it was nonsense and leave. That is a completely stereotypical Mormon response to the polygamy issue.

BilboFatwa had it right (and sounds like another ex-Mormon to me), but he didn't mention how completely wrong and ridiculous specialspecial's claims of "more women than men" in the church then. This is COMPLETELY FALSE and can be proven with the church's own records, yet Mormon leaders keep repeating this lie over and over. There were FAR more women than men in the Salt Lake valley back then, there was simply no rational need for polygamy, despite Mormon's attempts to rationalize it.

And, yes, Smith WAS a notorious polygamist. Married over 30 women, some younger than 16, some still married to their other husbands. Notorious is a good description.

Don't get mad at specialspecial, though, cause he's just repeating what he's been taught and believes the people who told him. Mormonism is a hard thing to shake once it's in you, especially if you were born into it.

    But, yeah, he's completely wrong.

(For the record, I enjoy Big Love!)

As I said, let the mormon bashing begin

    by specialspecial

Holy damn, people... I had a couple of minutes before I went to bed, so I rattled off a quick pre-emptive strike to what I anticipated (correctly, apparently) would be a venom-filled strike on a religion that has just been trying to do its thing for more than 150 years. I will never understand the fury with which people lay into what they perceive to be the inconsistencies in the church. So sue me, I laid down the church's official line on why polygamy was practiced- that doesn't mean you get to jump straight to the "I've been brainwashed" argument. If I'd had more time, I would have also included the "As Man is, God once Was" explanation. I suppose I didn't want to lay out what to me are sacred teachings in a talkback section that is typically a bit more (and gloriously more) profane. Don't accuse me of being misinformed, just of picking my spots. Either way, I wasn't ashamed of that particular teaching- I'm actually very proud to believe that particular teaching. It sets us apart from many other churches, and I think it's a great thing. I just don't get the rage it inspires in some people. Anyway, no one is more aware than I am that this isn't the forum for a nuanced religious debate; sorry to everyone who is even now training their sights on me. Let loose if you want. But just keep in mind that, for a church who was once violently driven from 4 different states and who at one time had an official extermination order placed on them, we're just a church who wants to worship how we see fit. It's nobody's job to save those poor brainwashed mormons. I know the history. I've read the books. Those thousands of corrections to the book of mormon were almost exclusively changes in punctuation. Just calm yourselves. I don't come down to your place of business and slap the dick out of your mouth, do I?

    by specialspecial

I don't blame people who look at the huge eyesore in the middle of the country that is Utah and think that Mormons are out of their minds. as a liberal democrat living in a church populated by somewhat myopic right-wingers, I cringe when I see some of the ways we are portrayed by our own people. I don't begrudge people their right to hate mormonism if they want- I just wish people would realize that there is some open-mindedness in the church. You just have to look for it.

If you know the history and read the books, why didn't you know that most of what you were saying wasn't historically accurate?

I agree with you, though, that Mormons are an easy target, and not always fairly so. Most "attackers" usually don't really know what they're talking about. But that just makes the calm, rational critics of the Church easier to dismiss, unfortunately.

One thing to remember... while modern day Mormons, both mainstream and fundamental, share a history up until the late 1800's, Big Love is really only about Mormonism in a roundabout way. It creeps in there regularly, but not overtly or with any great purpose to it. You just can't separate Mormonism from polygamy completely. Big Love is about so many other things, and I'm glad I stuck with it through the first season.

    I agree, laughtrack

    by specialspecial

It may have been a bit disingenuous to trot out the "historically inaccurate" explanation for polygamy. There were multiple levels of explanations for polygamy- some practical, but most spiritual and theological. I wasn't interested in pulling out what to me are sacred teachings on a website that isn't dedicated to such things. I don't come to aintitcool for the stimulating theological debates, and I didn't want to mix my religious life with my life as a pop-culture geek. And yeah, I realize it was me who started this debate- I accept responsibility. I'm actually way interested in seeing Big Love. I realize that it's not about mormon polygamists; if I wasn't a dirt-poor grad student, I'd order HBO or buy the first season on DVD. My only beef is that these are somewhat subtle distinctions about a show that is only seen by the small percentage of the population that has HBO. Everyone else just hears that it's a show about polygamists in Utah, and they jump right to the "Them Damn Mormons" line of thinking. Add to all of this the fact that we've got this bozo Mitt Romney running for President... there's just a lot of speculation (most of it unfounded) about the church I belong to. Anyway. I'm done being defensive about all of this; I can take a good razzing along with anyone else. Let loose. And yes, I'd love to marry all of you and make you my multiple whatevers. I'll be accepting applications through this talkback; the sky's the limit- IMPRESS ME!

    Book of Mormon- Special Edition

    by bigrub

Mormonism is an easy target, the impulse to bash on their easily misinterpreted teachings and beginnings can be irresistible it’s true. But the fact is you can draw conclusions on the cliff note versions of their complicated history or you can actually read up on this "cult" and find it infinitely more interesting and varied then Scientology or even Star Wars cosmology. Mormon thought is more magical then Harry Potter, and more grandiose then Lord of the Rings, kitsch aside the comparison to Battlestar Galactica was definitely more on par. Mormonism- more Aleister Crowley then Billy Graham, and as I see it, it's roots lie more in Jewish Kabala tradition, and Alchemy (Rosicrucianists), then any sort of boring run of the mill Protestant Christian belief system.

I know this show has many defenders, but I'm not sure if any of them has confirmed that the quality progressed over the season. If they like it but their opinion of the end is on par with the beginning, then that doesn't say a hell of a lot for me. I only watched the first two episodes; the cast's great, and I don't mind slice-of-life over plot, but the dialogue was just not very well-written compared to HBO's repertoire.

    k. I downloaded the first season but am not done watching it. I noticed as soon as Madacorp was mentioned that it's adam backwards, and worried that since the show was on ABC Family that they were heading down some religious path. Not that there's anything wrong with that....ahem

Big Love is to Mormonism as....

    by darth kosher

Sopranos is to Italian-American life. It's a show. If you want an accurate portrayal of LDS or fundamentalist life in Utah, either read a book, watch a documentary or move to Utah and join the sect of your choice.

For the record, if I had to choose, I choose first wife. Very MILFy.

    I enjoy Big Love

I just got hooked with the first season. Can't help it. I love me some Chole Sevigny, she's the only one (Besides Bill Paxton...ugh) that will get naked on the series and she's fucking hot even with all the weirdo mormon shit. I think Bill should keep her and just get rid of the oldest wife. He can keep the youngest wife too, looks like he and his son want to share her anyways.

And think Amy Acker on Alias (Kelly Peyton, Agent of K.I.C.K.A.S.S.). Leah Cairns, her name is. You'll remember it, I suspect in short order.
