Help Flows In To

I am – Hercules!!
Yesterday, it cost $8.49 to ship a Mars Bar to The CW and its entertainment president, Dawn Ostroff (to entice them to greenlight the further adventures of Veronica Mars before June 15). Today, thanks to the good people at The Indian Food Store, it only costs $1.79 to ship such a bar - IF you enter code “VERONICA” at checkout. (The same free shipping is available for wealthier "Mars" fans if they want to order the 12- or 24-packs.) Now, when you click on this Amazon link, you can find this message under “product details”:
Youve spoke and we listened! Join TheIndianFoodStore in supporting the Veronica Mars "Bars for Mars" Campaign We are now giving free shipping to all orders to get more people involved! Its our way of showing support! Orders will no longer be sent individually to reduce shipping costs. We will create one massive shipment for Ms Dawn Ostroff and everyone at CW! Check back on this page for daily updates! As of 12:59AM CST (yes it is very late at night as I type this), we have had a total of 78 bars ordered! A letter will all of your names and a huge note that says "Veronica Mars: More Addictive Than Chocolate! Satisfy our craving for Season 3!" [sic] will be included. Next to each of your names will be the total number of Mars Bars purchased towards this cause!
We’ll work on getting that “Season 3” thing fixed, but in the meantime this offers a great way to cheaply voice our support, “Jericho nuts”-style. Again, the address to ship to: Dawn Ostroff President of Entertainment The CW Network 4000 Warner Boulevard, Bldg 168 Burbank, CA 91522-0002 (And, again, be sure to type “VERONICA” into that code box to take advantage of that all-important free shipping.) *** WHY EMAILS SUCK: Why not just email The CW or sign an electronic petition? A famous friend writes:
Oh, and email and netpetitions don't work because an obsessed fan could easily create infinite email names and sign the petition thousands of times. There is a known multiplier for physically mailed letters - 1 letter equals 100 viewers - that is a convincer. :)
And I’d guess that a Mars Bar – solid proof that fans are willing to put their $1.79 where their mouths are – is probably worth a few physically mailed letters. (I think the "Jericho" fans supposedly bought 20 tons of nuts, so we have a benchmark for which to strive.) (If “Veronica” gets 2 million viewers, it’s a pity we can’t yet all just pay a buck a week in advance for each episode. That would give each episode a $2 million budget, right? Maybe one day someone will sort out some cool pay-per-view economics …) *** IN TODAY’S TRADES: The other big “Save Veronica” news Thursday is has taken out a (doubtlessly gorgeous) $1,600 ad in this morning’s Hollywood Reporter. Didn't this need to be done before the upfronts????

I wish you all the best of luck with your show! (Never seen it, but if I get the chance this kind of devotion makes me interested enough to give it a try.) :^)

"Didn't this need to be done before the upfronts?"

    by Hercules

At the CW upfronts, Dawn Ostroff said a decision on future "Mars" was still up in the air. Apparently going forward with "Veronica" might get harder, however, after June 15.

  • June 7, 2007, 6:47 a.m. CST

Not a fan, but good luck

    by RenoNevada2000

While I have never seen an episode of the series, probably should Netflix it I guess, I wish you folks luck. Just wish all this season's grassroots campaigning had started at a time when we could have saved STUDIO 60...

  • June 7, 2007, 6:50 a.m. CST

Shouldn't we get started on Battlestar as well?

    by Shan

Since despite the denials, obviously they were told to wrap it up at the end of the coming year as that's all they were getting. Who ends a show after 4 seasons voluntarily (except the UK)? - Honestly.

  • June 7, 2007, 6:52 a.m. CST

    I've never watched...

    by jimmy rabbitte

this show; but I did watch Jericho. Obviously these shows of fan support for a series can work. I wish VM fans all the best. I hope another network smartens up and decides to air a show people actually want to watch. So many new shows start up every year and most of them don't make it past the first month... deservedly so. Why do networks feel the need to cancel shows people are actually watching? <p> Anyway all the best to the VM fans. I hope your show comes back.

    by evolutiongirl

is $545.22. I bought my Mars bar yesterday and paid shipping along with, I'm guessing, the other 77 people. Sounds like they have plenty of cash to ship in bulk! Go buy a Mars bar!

    by RenoNevada2000

It's sounding more like that the decision to end GALACTICA after the upcoming season came from the producers/creative side of the series rather than the networks. I'll side with the creatives on this one. If they feel their story will be done, then let them tell their story the way they need to.

  • June 7, 2007, 7:04 a.m. CST

    why june 15?

    by KoozyK

well, it's because it's the day kristen bell's contract is up and she becomes a free agent not tied to cw. cw would still need to re-negotiate the contract with bell as well as most of the supporting cast. <br> face it, the show is done. i'll just treasure my box sets in the meantime.

    Other Suggestions.

    by Mr. Profit

Hey Guys, Herc, I think this effort here is pretty awesome. I think (in addition to the Mars Bars Campaign) that on Monday we should ALL also download the final episode of Season 3 "The Bitch Is Back" off of ITunes the same day. That way the show can rocket straight to number 1 on the ITunes Chart due to all of the downloads. Also up until July 2nd, Target is selling Season 1 and Season 2 with a deep discount price of 22.99. Maybe we should all purchase a box set on the 14th of June right before the deadline date. What do you guys think? Whatever we decide I am down. I can't order a Mars Bar on Amazon for whatever reason, but when that gets fixed I will surely do so.

  • June 7, 2007, 8:25 a.m. CST

    I ordered a six-pack for $8.49

    by mollyunravel

Not sure why the individual bars are unavailable, but I was planning on buying more than one anyway. I'm still not exactly holding my breath... I just figure that if it really ends up not coming back, at least i can't say that I didn't try. And if it does get saved, I can say that I helped. Really it's all about me and my ego. LONG LIVE VERONICA MARS!

  • June 7, 2007, 8:39 a.m. CST

    look, I love VM but...

    by mthrndr

Jericho had naturally far more viewers than VM. VM just wasn't making money for them. Let's say enough bars get sent and by some miracle they put it back on air. And then season 4 sees only 1.5 million -2 million viewers per ep. I know, at least we'll get 8 episodes or whatever...I just don't think that Network management sees that as strategic at all. Jericho beat established shows in the ratings - it probably was a mistake to cancel it. VM's mistake was being tied to a crap-ass network like UPN/CW. If it was on the big 4 or FX or something, it would have done better. Michael Ausiello of TVGUIDE got a Ferris Wheel put up to try to save Everwood! Look where that got that show - season 2 isn't even on DVD (a travesty by any measure, when I can buy ALF season 2 on DVD).

    by Edgewise

Herc, do the good people at The Indian Food Store know that the candy has to arrive at the CW *before the 15th*? And why are the individual bars not available today? And why do they offer the 6-packs for two different prices?

  • June 7, 2007, 8:47 a.m. CST

Don't generalize on an internet message board.

    by Mr. Profit

It's not like EVERYONE here doesn't give a shit about world causes/issues. I donate what I can to charity like most people who can afford to do so do. I am also fortunate enough (that in addition to giving to charity) I have disposable income as well. (Not everyone in the talkback lives in Mom's already cliched basement.) We are all in an effort here to save one of our favorite shows. What's the problem with that? I'm sure the majority of the folks on here are not assholes who ignore the grander issues of the world. I really don't see any problem with sending in money for something that could potentially continue my TV entertainment on Tuesday nights? <P>Also Mars Bars for starving kids would be bad anyway. They have no nutritional value.</P>

  • June 7, 2007, 8:58 a.m. CST

Six Pack is what a real hero would send.

    by The-Warrior

Man up and drop 8.50. I love Veronica Mars and I don't care how fruity that makes me. I just sent six candy bars to some millionaire broad. This better fucking work. See you in Hell.

  • June 7, 2007, 9:06 a.m. CST

Another thing: did anyone think of the practicality?

    by Gristle

Did anyone actually consider that Mars bars are not available in America, and fans would have to scramble to find some? I'm almost thirty, I've been eating candy bars all my life, and I've never even seen a Mars bar. I want to save this show as much as anyone, but I'm not seeing much of an organized, well-thought-out effort, like the one for Jericho. Symbolism is nice, but putting pen to paper and stuffing it in a mailbox will probably be more effective.

  • June 7, 2007, 9:10 a.m. CST

    This will only work

    by eric haislar

If it is available on amazon. Right now it looks like they are out.

  • June 7, 2007, 9:19 a.m. CST

    To counter criticism

    by Gristle

I like the idea of making Veronica Mars #1 on the iTunes download list. I think the most effective thing would be to either start ordering those DVDs from Amazon to move that up the list, or, if you can't afford that, donate to one of those funds that buy the DVDs and give them to libraries. The idea is to have the CW see that Veronica Mars is the topseller at Amazon and iTunes. A letter-writing campaign would seal the deal.

  • June 7, 2007, 9:31 a.m. CST

Yeah, the sugar in a Mars bar would kill a starvin' kid

    why not marshmallows??

    by sillyd

I know this campaign ran last year also when they thought VM was not going to be picked up for Season 3 and I question the whole Mars bars thing then also. Yes I get it, the show is called Veronica Mars hence Mars Bars. I think it would have been better to go with something like MARSHMALLOWS!! Bags and bags and bags of Marshmallows since VM is a marshmallow as we learned in the Pilot Episode. (I hear the Jericho fans picked Nuts because of the finale so why not pick something from the pilot of VM)

VMars took some time for me...

    by Mr. Profit

To even consider watching it BASED ON THE NAME "Veronica Mars" alone. I thought it was a girl show that was a Buffy rip off based on previews alone. I only started watching late into the 1st season and that is only because MTV aired a re-run on a Sunday and it was the Mac Switched At Birth episode. I tuned in afterward and never missed an episode. Veronica Mars was never marketed properly, and some people will watch it and hate it. But to me, I love the show, the writing, the cast and the great acting of Kristen Bell who keeps it all together. Kristen Bell will shine on even if the show is definitively cancelled.

    Mr. Profit I agree

    by spikerules2

I didnt want to watch it due to see the LAME arse opening credits. However, I had 20 odd S1 eps waiting to be watched on my PVR, so I sat down for a whole weekend without eating properly (apart from crisps and coke) and watched the whole lot. I never imagined how clever, character driven and emotional the show would be. Everything from the story to the characters to their dialogue and interaction, the relationships of the main characters and of VM and her father, the acting... EVERYTHING... some of the best TV I have seen since Joss Whedon left the airwaves. SUPERB.

I'd find their claims more credible about Battlestar if a) the ratings were at least about the same as the excellent first season and/or b) this was a show made in the UK. On the upside, I would like to assume, no useless standalone episodes.

spikerules2: Donations in the name of VM works for me

    by SpyGuy

I honestly wasn't trying to get all soapboxy, but it just annoys the crap out of me when fans will donate food (or candy bars, in this case) to save a TV show for their own self-interest without at least trying to think of the Bigger Picture here. <p>So yeah, I think a campaign to donate Mars bars (or something better) in the name of VERONICA MARS sounds like a much better idea than bombarding TV execs with something they'll either throw away or leave out in the break room for people to take home to their kids. At least someone's using their brain today...</p>

"like volunteer for some Democrat's election campaign?" I don't know, maybe because I'd like some one intelligent in office? (Sorry, couldn't help myself. But now on to my real point) Why are you automatically assuming that no one here does any of those things anyway? Who's to say that the people sending Mars Bars don't also donate to charity? Cause you know that when you assume you make and ass out of you (to quote the great show we're trying to save).

    bite me Anchorite

    by oisin5199

I don't have high hopes for this campaign either, mostly because the CW has made dumbass decisions from day one (let's see, resurrect 7th freakin' Heaven, for one). And they already ruined the direction of the show by dumbing down the arcs. But damn it, this show is FAR more worth saving than the mediocrity that is Jericho. Even if the plot on that show gets exciting, we already have several (much better) shows about a group of people banding together to survive and beat those wish them harm. Whereas, Veronica has always been a one of a kind. I've said it before and I'll say it again. VM was the most clever, poignant and funny show about young people on the air today. There's a reason why Buffy fans were into it. I think it's a shame it ended when it did, but I'm skeptical about a new configuration. I'd almost rather see the VM movie, than a reinvention without the majority of the characters.

    by AnnoyYou

But more to the point, even if a thousand Mars Bars are sent to CW/Ostroff, it won't make much of an impression. So a thousand people love the show, bfd. It lost money for the CW and the new FBI/21 Jump Street concept won't have any of the old cast members save Bell and maybe a couple of very minor VM players (in other words, no Jason Dohring, no Tina Majorino, no Percy Daggs, no Enrico Colantoni, etc.). So you guys are campaigning for a very different show than the one that was on for 3 years. Is that really what you want?

Um, okay. Next time you go to rent a movie, or buy an expensive pair of clothing, or an ice cream cone, or a bag of chips, or an extra soda, or a ticket to a movie, or a DVD, etc think about your words. Do you really need any of that? Wouldn't food for the homeless be a better place for your money? Unless every bit of your disposable income goes to feeding the homeless I personally feel that comments like that are hypocritical. People donating to this are fans of the series and would like to see it continue. I donated 12 bars, and for the record... I'm sure I give more money to the homeless and to charity per year than you do as well.

Good work. 3000 bars? That's fantastic. And I'd be all for saving Studio 60, but on that show, it seems as if some of the cast is relieved that it is done with, and the fact that it's so expensive would probably make it more difficult.

    Mars Bars ARE in stock

    by Aristotle

I don't know why Amazon is tinkering with the links, but the bars are most definitely in stock! On the main amazon page, you can search for "Mars Bar" and I guarantee you will have several searches. You should also check out their blog and stick it to Amazon as well. That is all.

    Okay, A BETTER WAY!!!

    by Scramble Network

Hey, I've been the one working with Sachin over at The Indian Food Store to figure out this bulk order stuff. These folks are great! Here's an easier way to give. You can now contribute to the Mars Bars Campaign via PAYPAL. Any amount, it all goes towards the bulk order. Just go to And click the contribute link. On that page, I'll also be providing updates on how many bars have been purchased, and some fun metrics on that front. HEY HERC-- can you get us an article on this?!! No Amazon, no special codes, just contributing! This is by far the best way to go. And again, The Indian Food Store rocks-- really nice people!

    Give Up

    by shoe1985

The CW/UPN gave this show a lot of time to develop in a ratings powerhouse for their network, it never happened. Ratings actually went down this year, not a good sign. If I was Dawn I would say, "Sorry, we gave you many chances to get the ratings up, but instead they went down, it is over."

so will a few bucks stop anything happening in Darfur?

    by oisin5199

No? Well it might save a good show. Whatever. That's such an idiot argument. I agree with whoever said that if you don't think about how the money you spend on DVDs or movie tickets or any other entertainment could also help with the world's problems, then you should shut the fuck up about people spending minimal cash on a show-saving campaign. Hypocritical bastards.

Look at the one that's going to accompany said Mars Bars. Am I crazy, or doesn't that say "season 3"?

    season 3

    by mollyunravel

i've been thinking more about how many people disliked season 3 for whatever reason... i mean, there's no question that seasons 1 and 2 were better (i, for one, am a rare individual who preferred season 2) than the current incarnation of vmars, but i guess the question is - if season 1 and 2 didn't exist and season 3 was actually the first, would you have liked it? it's hard to say because there's a lot of story that came before, but just generally... i think that if i'd only ever seen season 3 i'd still consider it one of the best written/acted/produced shows on network television. that's just my opinion though.

  • June 8, 2007, 2:29 p.m. CST

    Mollyunravel, a very good point...

    by DanielKurland

And I think I'd agree with you. I also prefer season two to season one, if only for how season one has a lot of bland filler episodes at the beginning, whereas season two just kicks off great, and keeps going. Yes, it does become a little too complicated, but I didn't mind.

Have you ever used before? Like do you have an account and have had stuff shipped to you before? In that case try to log back on right now and edit the shipment if you still can, otherwise Amazon will be shipping it to your last ship-to address. This happened to me once, my ex got something I ordered because 5 months before I ordered her books and had them shipped to her house... so it automatically saved her address (so that it had both her address and mine) and next shipment it went to her. Granted, I should have paid attention to where its going, but I didn't know... I mean you sign in to your account, it has all your information... you assume its going to put in the address you put as your ship to address, I didn't even remember shipping anything anywhere else so didnt even pay attention... I knew that loads of times before it automaticaly shipped to me so just assumed it would again. So, long winded boring story aside.. If you have an account they will ship to your saved address... and at the last address you shipped to at that if you shipped to multiple locations.

    Shipping Address

    by DS9-4ever

I think it might be okay if the wrong address is in there because they said they were going to suspend individual shipping in favor of a bulk shipment. But then again... I suppose you could wind up with some Mars Bars... but if you put in the code "Veronica" I think it would go into the bulk package. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • June 8, 2007, 4:18 p.m. CST

    Hey all...

    by Scramble Network

Once again, you can save all the Amazon-related hassles by just contributing to the bulk order fund via paypal, at Also, the really big news: we have officially exhausted the U.S. stock of MARS Bars!!! Seriously, they're all gone, several thousand of them. So now, we're on to marshmallow. You know, "Veronica Mars, she's a marshmallow." This will be great, too, because bags of them are a lot bigger than candy bars, so the shipment will look all the more impressive. Just give to Paypal to help out the Marshmallow fund. Finally, it looks like these will be delivered via freight on an 18 wheeler. That should be pretty cool!

    by InfinityWave

There. $20 is a small price to pay to help pummel a rich TV executive with an embarassment of chocolate. Take this 18 wheeler full of saccharine treats as an indictment on your vacuous, disposable existence!!! ... What, this is to save that Veronica Mars show? Huh, well that's a plus too, I guess.

I was totally on autopilot and did the same thing. I emailed the seller and they responded: "Dear Fan, Thank you for your order and support. All Mars bars will go to Dawn Ostroff for the campaign so not to worry! Post on our blog at if you have any suggestions! Let's hope this works! Thanks, Sachin Agrawal, Manager TheIndianFoodStore".
