It’s Official!! Seven Episodes of JERICHO For Midseason!!

Published at:  Jun 06, 2007 4:30:29 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

From CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler:

June 6, 2007

To the Fans of Jericho:

Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of “Jericho” for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more “Jericho,” we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show. But that community needs to grow. It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that “Jericho” will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting “Jericho” on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of “Jericho” in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler
President, CBS Entertainment

P.S. Please stop sending us nuts :)

And cogratulations to all you "Jericho" nuts out there who made it happen!!

Great job getting it back. I tried watching it myself but got put off by too many "we need to get fuel to power the generator at the hospital or else this baby's going to die" episodes early on. But after hearing about how things unfolded later in the season, I'll definitely be catching up on the first season and watching when it returns.

Ive been sending letters, calling CBS & spending my cash on nuts, variety ad, hollywood reporter ad, Kansas cleanup and pretty much telling everyone I know about the show. It probably wont last past the 7 eps but at least its back! Now I can hang out with my wife again (I'm not sure if thats good or bad to her). This feels especially good after there were SOOOO many people in here and on other boards calling us crazy! Anyway...The show is kinda up and down the first half of the season but gets MUCH better the second half. Give it a chance. Its no Lost (what is) but its a fun show. AWESOME job Jericho Rangers I'm proud of US!!!!!!

    by tommy999

Im glad that CBS made this decision, they saw that the Nielson ratings arent the best indicator of a programs success and following and are giving it a chance and promoting it with the full backing of the networks resources, focusing on the online ones. Hopefully it works out for the best.

Although there is one thing they could add though.. add Kristen Bell in as an FBI Agent... kill two birds with one stone

No, that doesn't sound right at all

    by inwosuxred

I thought the point of all the protesting was because the show didn't get wrapped up. Now they're saying the show could go on, which makes it sound like they will be producing 7 more episodes without any closure yet again. Just wrap the thing up in 7, and don't tease your audience. If they end the 7th new episode in a cliffhanger and don't return, that would be the biggest possible F.U. they could do to their audience...although it would also be hilarious, so I kinda hope they do that.

    hmmm

    by frodofraggins

I was kind of hoping they'd provide closure to the series. If the first 7 don't do well in ratings, there still won't be closure. I hope they just end the 7th episode so that it provides a satisfying end if necessary, but allows for more to be told. Maybe they can film alternate endings.

Never written to any of the "Big Guys" of the site. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for keeping interest in the show on here. Even though most talkbacks were full of haters....They WERE talking about Jericho. It kept it in mind. That had to recruit new people to help in the fight. This site and Dark Horizons were the first 2 movie sites I ever went to. I never left this one but find darkhorizons to kinda suck these days. I did post to Garth over there about making a article about Jerico. He wrote me back a refusal. So I wont be back to his site. In closing I again really appreciate you for helping out! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!

Next, let's get ABC to give us an "Invasion" TV-movie that wraps up the series properly and not on a cliffhanger.

    by freakemovie

So good job, fans and CBS. And don't worry -- I imagine the writers will be very conscious of the fact that these next seven episodes might be their last shot, so the 7th episode will probably be able to serve as a finale with a possible continuation...shoot alternate endings, and then air the right one according to ratings, or something like that. One word of advice to CBS, though -- don't market the show too hard as "the one that came back because of an unprecedented hardcore fan base". That will only alienate everyone who doesn't watch it already. (That was the big marketing mistake of Serenity.)

I swear this show is utterly inferior to the awesomeness that was miracles. I watched Jericho for all of 7 episodes until I totally forgot about it. What was my reaction when I realized this? "No big deal, it's pretty boring anyway."

Seriously, if they can get someone other than Ulrich to play the lead in a relaunched Miracles, I'd be all for it. Just bring back Angus McFadyen and that hot latina chick.

This makes me happy in many ways. Jericho was the first show I passionately watched that got cancelled, in my opinion, before it's prime. So Veronica fans, S3 was weak and ended weak. And I got into Firefly off the DVD. Anyways, I'm thrilled just for the sole fact I get to find out what happened in the big last stand battle that was about to hit. Great finale and deserved to get a payoff. If it only gets 7 more episodes I'm fine with that. NUTS!

    by newc0253

Congrats to the fans for actually saving a show for once. It may be too much to hope that the folk who write Jericho make the best use of their reprieve, instead of repeating the kind of hokey cheese that flawed the series in the first place.

Have you watched the end of season 2? Whatever shortcomings this show had, it got rid of them! I fully realised its premise of how modern man acts after nuclear war. What does modern man do? He goes to war over food, resources, and land! Jericho and New Bern could be Greece and Troy, or Sparta and Persia, or Germany and Poland. And now we know the conspiracy in full, I cant wait to see how that plays out too. Jericho got REAL good by the end! Nuts to you haters

The fact is, Jericho had pretty decent ratings until it had the winter hiatus and came back to face up against American Idol. Glad it is getting another shot, and at least the original cliffhanger will be settled.

I'm still annoyed that Now & Again's cliffhanger didn't get resolved, so this will make up for it a little.

    by seven0

Until they see how well the DVD sells first. Because if the first season DVD sells like crazy for whatever reason, chances are the second season of the show will have a large viewership. Congrats, sounds hopeful. Why did this work for Jerico and none of the others? Because Jerico had an actual viewership, the other shows did not.

...it got MUCH MUCH better in the second half of the season. And unlike most of these "mystery tease" shows, they actually created questions and delivered answers, and these answers were satisfying, definitive and yet opened doors to new questions and actually progressed the story. (What a concept, take note LOST writers!!!!) You did not feel like the writers are just yanking your chain and have no clue to whats going on, or they do know but are trying to obfuscate it as much as possible. - It felt like a real story. I don't think its the best show out there (or even on CBS) but it certainly deserved being brought back.

Obviously, it's not a common thing, but it's reassuring that OCCASIONALLY, maybe one unjustly cancelled show, with a big enough following, can return. I never watched Jericho, but I'm happy for the people. I've lived through Freaks and Geeks, Twin Peaks, Undeclared, Clone High, Arrested Development, Andy Richter, Firefly, Angel, Miracles, and most recently Studio 60 and Veronica Mars, and it's nice that sometimes people can make a difference. If this sort of thing DOES work on Veronica, I'd have such a huge fucking grin on my face.

non-cable network. You may not actually watch it, but they don't do bullshit like FOX, ABC, and to a lesser extent ABC does. Sure the show was sub-par. Sure, some of the sub-plots were fucking terrible. And sure, the acting was not the greatest.

But it was still good in that car crash kind of way.

Firefly should have been brought back, but only if they promised to change it's fucking theme song. Seriously, I know people who did not watch the show because they hated the theme song so much.

    Angel being brought back? No.

Maximum Bob, now that is a show they should have brought back. And Stark Raving Mad.

Oh, one last thing, ANYBODY who watches 24 has no right to trash-talk Jericho. Jake Neilsen, everyman, is the owner of a small rib shack in Memphis Tennessee. One day he arrives at work to find the ghost of Elvis looming. Elvis looks at him, sneers, and says "Shoot the TV" and then disappears.
That evening he's watching the Memphis Tigers play, when the Pyramid is suddenly held hostage by terrorists. People start dying. Jake remembers what Elvis told him, grabs his gun, and shoots the TV. But instead of breaking the tube, the bullet travels through the TV and kills the terrorists.
Thus Jake is set down a path where he finds that he has powers to save the world. The problem is: he doesn't always know what he needs to do. He leaves his keys in the door, and a bank gets robbed. He grabs a tossed umbrella from a trashcan and opens it and it stops raining. A lot seems to happen with the Pyramid ... and Elvis doesn't always seem very helpful. Can Jake save the world? What is Elvis and what is his agenda? Will the fans send ChrTh tons of ribs when the show is cancelled the following spring?
Tune in to NBC and find out.

I was a loyal Jericho viewer, and I saw every episode.

I never really loved it, although I did find it watchable.

    I'm glad it'll be back.

I hope the writers take some chances with this opportunity and make the show a little more hardcore. Give it a better visual style. Make it less preachy. Give us more suspense, more tragedy. Make it sexier and sleeker. Give us less of the little kid store-owner and his girlfriend. Get better directors who demand more from the actors. Have the deaf girl get kidnapped and the IRS lady put through something harrowing. Show more of the rest of the US. Don't oversaturate us with military stuff -- a little goes a long way. Bring in some Amish people. (Well, maybe not the last one.)

    {{{{{And for all you Veronica Mars fans. I've also watched every episode of all three seasons, and that show was past its prime. The CW gave it a long, healthy life, but the public just wasn't interested. Let it die in peace.}}}}}

Jericho producers: Please wrap up most of the arcs

    by prof. pop-cult

You've been given 7 episodes, and it's no guarantee that there will be more episodes ordered. So PLEASE do not try to string things out with another cliffhanger. Resolve the Jericho/New Bern war, and resolve the conflict situation developing between Hawkins and his former boss. (I predict that Hawkins will assassinate him.) Close out these two storylines, and if (I emphasize "if") CBS orders more episodes, then start new storylines (for example, going into further details about a second American civil war). It's called starting and ending a chapter. So with these 7 episodes that CBS has granted you, and which your faithful viewers fought for you to have, please at least wrap up these two major storylines and don't leave anything hanging, in case the show gets canceled for real. Thanks.

    by sledge hammer

...should realise that it takes more than just overwhelming fan commitment to get a second chance for your fave show, it also takes something much rarer, a suit in the higher echelons willing to reverse a corporate decision. You need both of those things to line up for a show to be saved. Jericho fans were just lucky enough for that to happen, and that the suits at CBS didn't get arrogant or dug in, and instead had the stones to reverse an already made decision. So again, kudos to both the Jericho nuts, and the CBS suits who took notice.

    Something isn't right here

    by great czars ghost

This all seems to easy and is happening to fast. There have been a lot of save my show movements that were as large or even larger than this one and yet failed to revive a TV show. Most didn't get any were near as much attention from the media as this one did either. I'm wondering if this isn't all a set up by CBS to play us fans?? CBS has people create the movement then uses it's Medea outlets to publicize the movement it created to get attention and pull new possible viewers to the show. Then looking like the nice network they resurrect the who while congratulating us viewers for sending them a bunch of nuts. And the NUTS.... seems like that ending was just a little to convenient and fit to well into this whole event. Almost like it was scripted to this whole event. Have we all been had???

    The devoted do deserve admiration

    by the selecter

for the show's resurrection. OTOH, it was a low risk move for CBS. Sure, CBS got some egg on their face for cancellation in the first place, but now they have somewhat of a sure thing to slot in for whatever new Fall show fails, and get a PR boost as well. And a word for the newbie "refugees" -- temper your expectations, or you'll be disappointed. Gray may even tear gas you. Jericho worked its way to a step above Guilty Pleasure, but in the end, whenever that comes, this show will likely be remembered more for its revival than the show itself.

Donal Logue as Jake, Bruce Campbell as Old Elvis, Val Kilmer as Young Elvis (and yes, it's important to the plot that there be young and old Elvii), Haley Joel Osmont as Jake's grown-up son, Joanna Gleason as Jake's mom, and Stacy from My Two Dads as Jake's love interest (last name Keanan?)

For those of you wanting these 7 eps to provide closure, what are you looking for? It's not like the US is going to rebuild and put everything to normal in those 7 eps. CBS said that if they brought Jericho back, they would follow the ratings with a new business model that included DVR recordings and online viewing...I think it's actually ironic that CBS, which I've always looked at as the "old folks" network, is moving its business structure into the future before any of the other networks.

to. CBS is top dog right now -- they've won 5 straight years. As a result they're free to mess around with the traditional model because it could mean even more money for them. ABC and NBC can't, because they're sucking hind tit, and they can't afford to change business models that could potentially make them look worse.

    by abin sur

But I don't know why the other networks would not at least track the ONLINE viewing...if you've watched a network show through their website, you HAVE to watch the commercials that are placed throughout before you can proceed. I'm no expert, but with the growing number that watch online, that should be a dream for advertisers dealing with the world of DVR - and all the network has to do is pay for bandwidth to stream the show.

Don't you think looking at another website when the commercial loads is the online equivalent of going to the bathroom/grabbing something out of the kitchen, etc...when a standard commercial plays out on TV? Advertisers have dealt with those issues for years and years. The smart thing they're doing online is having fewer commercials and keeping and shorter. And I've got the laptop plugged into the DLP, so it's a pain in the ass to search the web when there is a commercial - the cord ain't long enough. ;)

i for one was praying that the "save jericho" campaign suceeded but i didnt really hold much hope, so i am f'ckin amazed by this... im also enthused by all the people that are posting that they never watched it, but since they saw how passionate US fans are that theyre going to watch it too. it perhaps proves how under promoted the series was, on the national or international level. also the fact that CBS will be taking into account DVR recording, which honestly i thought most networks already did....i DVR 99% of what i watch, mainly cause i work graveyard shift and i have wacky hours, plus i honestly dont like commercials...so its better for me to fast fowrd thru them....heres hoping for a huge jump in the ratings and an extension beyond the 7 episodes.....this almost makes up for CBS cancelling "now and again" on a cliffhanger...almost ....giving jericho a full season will make me forget.... if u dont like the show and i see a few haters in here, go away and stop bothering the real fans...anyone that hasnt seen it , please watch the re-runs on cbs this summer...i for one think it was interesting from the beginning ...but if u wanna look at it this way....we all kept watching star trek:next gen and it caught its stride eventually....jerichos first few eps may have been slow but the pace jumped quickly

I guess I hadn't even considered the 3-inch screen thing since I haven't looked at video on it in a while. And for those of you that are interested, the technology on those headsets is much better, and the prices are coming down - I got these on eBay for about 300 bucks. It's too bad one of the bombs didn't smack Jericho right in the center of its overblown acting and ham fisted action...And, by the way, since when are there mountains in Kansas? And it barely has enough trees in the whole state to build a playhouse...Don't you remember in school when they talked about the pioneer families and how they had to use sod to make their houses in Kansas because there WERE NO TREES!!!! If they couldn't even get a little fact like that right, then how are we supposed to care about the rest of it? And the premise that you could see the mushroom cloud over Denver in Jericho.....? We weren't "sudden", we were always there, and in great numbers. The problem was that CBS, like all the other networks, relied solely on the outdated Neilsen ratings and didn't take into account webcasts, downloads, PVR's, etc. Even their almighty Neilsens told them the show was doing well before the winter hiatus, and that's when the writing, plot and acting were still pretty weak. After the break, it came back strong in all those departments, but it was up against American Idol, which got more of the almighty Neilsen ratings. Then, the blind network execs saw that and did what they always do. Now, we large number of fans have hopefully opened their eyes. If it is only for 7 episodes, so be it, but hopefully they will consider EVERYTHING before they cancel a show the next time...hopefully.
