Updated 06/05/07 11:56 PM CST USA: JERICHO Reborn!? Many Sources Now Say Resurrection Is Nigh!!

Published at:  Jun 06, 2007 12:11:38 AM CDT

Merrick again...

THIS ARTICLE in the LA Times says the current notion is to bring JERICHO back for eight episodes, with the hope/intent of continuing the series beyond the initial eight.

Part of the CBS resurrection's success will depend on how JERICHO performs when evaluated via a new business paradigm...

What's more, CBS no longer has to depend solely on primetime broadcast plays for its revenue. Between DVR playback ("Jericho" added nearly 10% more viewers when DVR figures were counted) and the now broadly accepted practice of streaming shows across the Net, CBS could try to make "Jericho" the poster child for a new business model.
says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

The network is said to have options on all actors, but deals need to be modified to reflect the unusual timing and size of the order. Proposed budget reductions would lead to some of "Jericho's" characters not returning for the abbreviated second season.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.

Closer and closer.

This may be a really interesting time for television. Perhaps in the future, series like JERICHO, FIREFLY, and an enormous slew of others (please don't be mad at me for not listing your favorite canceled show...it's been a tremendously long day and I'm damn tired) might be saved by adapting similar cross platform models. New frontiers & new perspectives, so to speak. Exciting.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE BELOW. More as more comes in...

Merrick here...

From this update, newly posted at TV Guide's website:

Multiple sources are telling me that CBS is this close to sealing a deal to bring Jericho back for at least eight episodes, possibly at mid-season.

[EDIT]

It's now just a matter of signing the actors to new deals and, according to one insider, finding a new soundstage to house the show's sets.

E! Online echoes this information!

IT IS CRITICAL TO REMEMBER THAT THIS INFORMATION HAS YET TO BE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED, although...considering the source....I'd say things are looking shiny.

A strong recommendation for fans of the series: do not pause, hesitate, or waver in your efforts to save JERICHO. If negotiations are actually / still under way, there's likely still room for matters to spin apart.

MORE INFO AS AS MORE COMES IN!!! I'll be out & unable to access the site for a few hours tonight - 5:30pm - 8:30pm(ish) CST USA. Other than that, I'll be here...waiting with baited breath.

I get chills thinking about this story coming to pass...

...the nuts worked? I watched the first season for kicks. The show is in the definite guilty pleasure range quality wise. However, TV basically sucks; and I don't feel like getting roped in by something only to have it cancelled after one season. If it comes back I guess I'll watch it; but it will depend on the night and the timeslot. I'm half expecting the execs will do something really stupid, like put it on opposite Lost...

Wish we could have saved Angel...I really like Jericho. Was it the best show on TV? no, but it was unique and posed a very interesting question; 'what would you do if the world ended today?'. It is possible to like a show, even if you think it can be sub-par compared to others. I love 'Heroes' and 'Lost', but I also love 'Smallville' and 'The 4400' too...it's the Tee Vee...not Shakespeare!

    by jim jam bongs

CBS should make it clear to the producers that they're not coming back. So either the producers should wrap it up, or if they don't, then it's not the network's fault. They could now be holding off on releasing a Jericho DVD box set until the status of this mid-season possibly and the number of episodes ordered is cleared up.

As fashionable as it seems to be hating on every show in existence on this site, some people actually liked it and would very much like to see some kind of conclusion to the story. It was smartly written, well acted and held my attention for the full season. Shouldn't the point of this whole Jericho saga be that if you actually expend some energy rallying againt a network that you find ending shows prematurely is wrong, then shows you actually enjoy may survive to conclude their storylines.

    by novaman5000

    Fuck resurrecting Jericho

    by mrmgp

How about reincarnating it. It had such an interesting premise that got blown to shit because CBS didn't have the balls to show a realistic post-attack United States, and they also blew the whole premise by having what appears to be fellow Americans right-wingers nuking our own cities. The whole series got bogged down into a "guess who's fucking who this week on Jericho" and the whole series became impossible to watch.

    Jericho is okay

    by newc0253

but i have a hard time believing it's "smartly written, well acted and held my attention for the full season". i like Jericho, which is to say i like the concept and some of the plot lines and ashley scott is easy on the eyes. But it's not well-written: most of the time it's a loosely assembled bag of cliches. And it's not well-directed: you've only got to compare the performance that Gerald McRaney gave in Deadwood to his performance on Jericho to see the difference. And it's got the cheesiest production values: half the scenes look like they were B-footage from a daytime soap. I like Jericho because any show that opens with a bunch of nuclear blasts and deals with the aftermath deserves some leeway. But it isn't a great show. I doubt it's even a good show.

This makes no sense, why do you care? You didn't like it, you aren't watching it, then don't watch. All I know is that apparantly whatever show you wanted back didn't have the fans to support it. Jericho had fans that supported in enough even in the face of cancellation. So stop your stupid incessant whining, and shut the fuck up.

Even the geography of this faux-Kansas makes no sense. One of the flattest states in the union, and it apparently has only one bridge that, if blown up, cuts off access to the whole town (including, apparently via off-road army vehicles. Guess they must have terraced fields or something). And where in Kansas can you see mountains, let alone a mushroom cloud over Denver? And don't get me started on the show's other massive problems (ignoring the effects of radiation, ignoring the oncoming winter, etc.).

I only watched the pilot of Jericho and while it didn't strike a chord with me, I wouldn't judge it based on just that episode. But I certainly wish I were reading this about Veronica Mars instead. But I would venture to bet that the reason this is getting the second chance that Firefly, VM, Angel, and other quality (possibly better) shows didn't is that I believe Jericho's ratings were considered moderate as opposed to low. Maybe not really enough for an expensive ensemble show but moderate nevertheless. Anyway losing Veronica and the confirmation that BSG's next season will be its last makes for a disappointing television landscape in my taste; all I will have left is Lost which really moved uphill and 24 which really moved down. I only think Heroes is okay; the characters aren't very involving for me. The only new show that sounds promising next season is Pushing Daisies; I'm skeptical about David Greenwalt's Angel rehash.

If you hate the show then fucking do something else. I think its great everyone else is pissed their shows didn't get picked up. You know what the problem is. They DIDNT do what Jericho fans DID! We brought our show back even if all you fuckers in here hate it. Its back and your shows are still dead. So keep whining away about how much you hate it Bacci. Or how other shows are better. You may always hate it and the others shows may be better. But ours is here and yours aren't. Thats pretty much end of discussion.

    by otisspofford

I love all these haters who piss, whine and moan that THEIR show (Veronica Mars, Serenity, whatever) is not being resurrected, so life is so unfair and it sucks that Jericho may be on again - cry me a river, mofos - I couldn't get into VM or Serenity (please note, I did love BTVS) - but where were you when those were being axed - did you write letters and organize? Or did you think that just posting your rants on AICN was enough - HA! I would love to see Deadwood, Dead Like Me, Carnivale and the fucking original Trek with a newly rejuvenated cast incl Shat and Nimoy to come back - but it ain't gonna happen... HOWEVER, if you get one of your shows back (be it Veronica Mars or Chips), I won't waste my time crying that you got your show - I just won't watch like the first time 'round -- who fucking cares? Life's too short to bag and diss on people that got their cake and you feel like somebody pissed in your latte - too bad - either organize or shut the fuck up - and by the way, if you hate Jericho, we who like don't give an irradiated rat's ass what you think - go play with your Kristen Bell action figure - BTW, anyone else ever make the connection that VM was a rip-off of Smallville's Chloe? Just wondering.

I've read a couple of posts on this Jericho board and laugh my ass off at the bitches who whine about how their favorite shows should be on instead of Jericho. Well, I've got news for ya: People actually care about Jericho, wrote in, sent nuts, made videos on YouTube about their hate for CBS for Jericho's cancellation, etc, etc! What did you do to save your show? Bitch and complain on fan sites? LOL You guys need to get on the short bus out of here and go play with your girlie toys. I guess mature television isn't up your alley, since all you watch are girlie shows. Anybody who watches the OC, Veronica Mars, and Angel must something wrong in the head....MY GOD HOW CAN YOU WATCH SUCH PATHETIC POP-CULT DRECK?!?! Networks listen to money, they don't listen to whining

    by hubert_cumberdale

Lets look at the tally here. Jericho fans put their money where thier mouth is... pony up $50,000 worth of nuts sent to CBS and every media outlet that mattered. Ponys up a few thousand bucks to take out a full page ad in Variety magazine petitioning for their show. Pony up another couple thousand to 2 or 3 other advertising campaigns. AND gain over 100,000 signatures on the online petitions.

Now what are the fans of the shows like Firefly and VM doing? Whining on message boards. That's it. The Firefly petitions can't even break 15k signatures. Veronica Mars stalling out at 25k signatures.

Face it, those shows just didn't have the same fanbase as Jericho. That's why Jericho is coming back and those shows aren't.

    by thevision

I love these guys and I love reading all their bitter rants on this site. Its like having a family member over for the Holidays who gets tanked and spews his rage on Grandma for not getting the Stretch Armstrong for X-Mas back in '78, but here in Aintitcool its every frickin' day- Michael Bay sucks, Brett Rattner is a hack, Shia LeBouf is a little bitch, etc.- this site has some of the angriest, bitter Brownshirt motherfuckers on earth and I love it! I'm glad Jericho is coming back, even if its for only 8 episodes. I'm hoping the ratings spike up and it gets renewed for the next 7 fricking years! The Jericho haters are pissed off now, but can you imagine if it comes back to high ratings...OMG! THEY ARE GOING TO GO ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY INSANE! And the great thing is, all the venom will be spewed right here for my entertainment pleasure!

    Money didn't work for "Enterprise"

    by thevision

Back in '05, TrekUnited raised over 3 million dollars to show fans would be willing to pony up for a fifth season. I think the goal was 26 million to pay for 22 episodes. It wasn't going to happen even if the goal was reached due to legal concerns but the fans put their money where the mouth is to show they were serious and CBS owned UPN still said fuck you Enterprise fans. When that didn't pan out and Paramount announced the creation of direct-to DVD division, Trekunited sent letters and fans offered to pre-order for an Enterprise DVD movie- the response was NO to an Enterprise direct to DVD but would you buy "Save the last Dance 2?" Granted, Enterprise pissed away first 2 seasons, went for dark action in Season 3 with mixed results but came back with a true prequel in Manny Coto's run of Season 4- too little, too late. Enterprise went from 13 million viewers to barely 3 million. Jericho still had 8 to 9 million viewers against American Idol and that's not counting DVR- it deserves to be brought back, money or not.

    let's face reality here, guys

    by oisin5199

Many shows that deserved being saved way more than this mediocre show were not. Is this because of lack of fan support? Don't think so. For instance, the Save Angel campaign was huge - they even raised money for charity, for christsakes. Full-page ads, the works. The primary reason they're giving this a second chance is the network. It's crusty CBS, who were so surprised that some people (and when I say some people, I mean people under the age of 70) actually cared about one of their shows, they sat up and took notice. As much as I hate Variety and their idiotic writing style, I think they hit the nail on the head. CBS does not have 'buzz' shows. ABC has Lost, NBC has Heroes. If this were any other network, we would not be having this discussion.
Of course, I'm all for closure, and I hope they find a way to make those 8 episodes count, but am I the only one that thinks Swingtown may be more interesting? I just don't think there's a lot of life left in this thing.
On the other hand, I hope that Barbee is right about this being a sign of a paradigm shift in ratings, taking DVR and online into account. Anything that works towards burying the Nielsen dinosaur is a good thing. Maybe this resurrection is a good thing for all buzzworthy tv that suffer from poor writing. Now if only there was a better poster child. I miss you already, Veronica (Sniff!)

Why wasn't this type of effort put into VM...

    by danielkurland

Obviously the fans are capable of this sort of work. Is it because they've lived in fear of cancellation every year, and they just got tired? Disappointing either way. And stop saying "Let's get back Arrested Development". I loved the show to death, but it HAD the option to come back. Showtime would be airing it's 5th season right now, but HURWITZ said no. It was his choice. Now granted, some time has passed, and after his new pilot wasn't picked up, his thoughts may have changed, but basically, we could have had new AD, but Hurwitz was against it.

    ...because VM is on CW

    by thevision

and the hybrid doesn't have enough viewers. According to EW the merger hasn't increased ratings like they hoped. Smallville is going strong and helping Supernatural, WWE still has its audience but that's about it. CBS and Warners is concerned CW will never make a profit and may shitcan the entire network in two years. There was interest from other networks in Jericho and I think CW was one of them.

It would be enormously funny (and enjoyable) to have CBS plot the eight episodes centered around Hawkins...and reveal that he never strayed from the conspiracy! He was really the Plan B mop-up man for Baldy and finally delivers his Package to the dumbizens of Jericho, wiping the town out and raising the collective IQ of the state by five points! Then, people could rally around to save a re-imagined show about nuclear zombies after it gets cancelled again!!Oh, wait, this is a CBS show...never mind.

    KEEP FIGHTING

    by abin sur

Regardless of your feelings for the show, if enough viewers voice their opinion, then FUTURE shows you love (let's face it, it's too late for any show that was off before this season - that means no Angel, Firefly, etc...) could have DVR and alternative media outlets functioned into their ratings, thereby saving them from an early demise. Advertisers must LOVE it when you watch a show through the network website, because you can't fast-forward through the commercials. Whether you like the show or not, we could set a trend here, people, and this bodes well for all of us. FYI, I do think that Jericho really picked up steam in the second half of the season, and deserves another shot. Rag on CBS all you want, but who else even considered doing a drama about a large-scale nuclear attack in the US? I don't count Jeremiah.

    And Networks...

    by abin sur

Here's something new - why don't you take all the pilots for shows that you didn't pick up and make them available on your website to watch? Babylon Fields, for example - I was kinda looking forward to that one, even if it was described as a zombie "dramedy." All it costs is bandwidth, and if the network execs see that 15 million people went to the website and watched it, then maybe they might reconsider your opinion on not putting it in the lineup.

    by killermiller

All haters need to realize the reasons for JERICHO's return - a dedicated fanbase and a network which needed some buzz. Whining about other cancelled shows won't change the fact that they're cancelled, only makes you seem stupid for not realizing the opportunity that JERICHO has given fans. Like the call for a VM campaign, this is akin to FIREFLY DVD sales leading to SERENITY, or FAMILY GUY returning - networks are starting to realize that word-of-mouth and fanbases are key to not falling in the ratings (note to Silverman).

And I've seen the SWINGTOWN pilot. A drama about promiscuous singles broadcast on network television is everything it couldn't be. Give the set back to the citizens of Jericho, I WANT HAWKINS TO STOP THE TRAIN WITH A TANK
