Guillermo Del Toro speaks out on the cast of HELLBOY 2! There might be some unexpected faces here...

Published at:  Jun 05, 2007 1:47:30 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some news on the cast of HELLBOY 2.

We already know Ron Perlman is back, as well as Selma Blair. Now Guillermo has spoken out to deltorofilms.com and commented on who else is returning and some new faces that have been cast. There is at least one returning cast member that took me by surprise... I wouldn't go so far as to say there are spoilers below, but you will know a neat little surprise if you read it.

John Hurt is back for a cameo.

Myers is not back (see Rupie in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN in the London stage!!).

Universal has NOT authorized a brief Kroenen cameo/ epilogue- yet.

Johann will be played by John Alexander (body) and Tomas Kretschmann (voice).

Dougie will play 4 characters.

Brian Steele will play 4 characters.

Anna Walton is the actress playing Princess Nuala.

Luke Goss plays Prince Nuada. Silverlance.

Roy Dotrice plays King Balor

"Dougie" of course is Doug Jones, the man in Abe Sapien's skin in the first flick. John Hurt back, eh? Sweet. Love me my John Hurt and he was damn good in the first movie.

The Royalty characters come from an Irish-Celtic myth called Tuatha De Danann, but deltorofilms.com says their function and characteristics are changed radically for the film.

Can't wait to see Big Red back kicking some ass. What about you?

I need an explanation of how a grown demon could realistically exist in this world and fight supernatural crime. I'd also love to see 30 minutes of nothing but scenes showing how Hellboy creates his holy water bullets and captures sunlight into those other bullets. Del Toro never explained that realistically... what a hack!

Was it perfect? No, but they got enough of the core elements right that it really didnt matter.

Now that the origin is out of the way, this movie should kick all kinds of ass.

Yeah...this is comin from a comic fan, but so what? I'm a fairly harsh critic of my comic characters gettin weak/halfass treatments in movies these days. In the case of Hellboy I had also never read that particular book...so I basically had no idea what to expect goin in to see #1.

    Hellboy 1

    by jimmy_009

First off, it didn't feel like a Hellboy movie, although they did make Hellboy look about as good as you possibly could in a live action film. The movie didn't have any of the gothic feel of the comic, it felt like they plunked Hellboy in the X-Men universe. That was my main complaint. I would like to see Lobster Johnson on film at some point. Also, Blade 2 was vastly suprerior to the first one IMO. I have faith Del Toro will make at least a good movie out of this, but I still think stop motion is the only way to do Hellboy justice.

    by darfurontherocks

I am sorry, despite how much this site wants to push Hellboy, the movie was simply not very good. The characterization of the "cool" demon was forced. And the final battle was so anti-climatic that it was a huge disappointment. Blade II was a far better movie by comparision.

    The Hellboy movie was WEAK.

    by 11zombies

I will not be watching Hellboy 2: Devil Rape or whatever the hell the name is. The first one was overblown, overdesigned, overwritten crap. Most of Mignola's minimalist designs for the movie(which were brilliant) were REJECTED by del Toro in favor of hideously overdesigned crap, check out the Art of Hellboy movie book that was released along with the film. Ron Perlman has a great HB voice, but his interpretation of the character(he's an adolescent, he says in interviews) is ALL WRONG. "Aw crap" is not HB's catch phrase, he's only said it a couple of times in the comics. Selma Blair is AWFUL as Liz, just completely annoying. Abe- again, overdesigned and badly used. Don't get me started on the pantywaist FBI agent, you remember, the one who had to REMIND HB that he's a hero at the end of the flick? In the comics, HB is a hero because he CHOOSES to be. And he never needed a little agent man to remind him.

A poor, poor film with a terrible sounding upcoming sequel.

This Could Be a Great Story

    by mr. winston

If only del Toro could get away from writing - at which he's awful - this could really be a fantastic story. He's a hell of a director and a visual storyteller, but on the page he's a total mess. And that was the biggest problem with the script - it was a great, fun concept that was so terribly executed that it didn't make any sense. Maybe he'll get his wits about him and bring someone else in. Not by coincidence, that was the problem with the first movie as well.

    Maybe Guillermo can use computers...

    by mosquito march

...to fix Selma's hairline. That is probably a cruel thing to say about an otherwise reasonably attractive person, but it seriously looks like her roots are trying to conquer her forehead, and something about it freaks me out. If I was around her, she'd probably catch me sneaking up on her with a Norelco shaver daily, trying to catch her unaware and fix it the old fasioned way. ***** Oh, and maybe Guillermo could do us all and added favor and make this installment GOOD. That would be nice after the snoozefest that was the first film. Actually, they got Hellboy himself right. Everything else was wrong, especially the villain, Rasputin. He was no more Rasputin-like than the bad guy in BLADE 3 was Dracula-like. For some reason, Del Toro and Goyer like to see bald, oiled, barechested 'bears' as villains in their supernatural action movies. They look like they should be offering young, naive men Ecstasy tabs instead of trying to take over the world. But, to each his own.

Now if they will just fix Abe Sapien. He's supposed to be like Murtaugh to Hellboy's Riggs, not some psychic ninny. It's almost as bad as the neutering they gave Dr. Doom, but not quite. Ron Perlman, of course, rules as Hellboy and Blair is cute as Liz. Hopefully the script and effects will be an improvement over the last (although they done Hellboy good).

Good news is that the FBI agent character isn't back.

    by superninja

Now just fix Abe, please! I love Abe in the comics. Get rid of David Hyde Pierce and make him Hellboy's partner!

Myers may have felt bland in the first flick but

    by demosthenes2

I think the universe benefits from having a "straight" man just to offset everything else. I don't know the comics at all so I don't know if any of the new characters will fill that void; certainly doesn't sound like anyone on this list.

    "VINCENT" and "FATHER" together again!!!

    by master bruce

How cool is it that Roy Dotrice who played "Father" to Ron Perlman's "Vincent" on the 80's series "Beauty and the Beast" is in this film playing King Balor?!!! Herej's hoping these 2 fine actors have some scenes together. Now, if they could only get a cameo by Linda "Catherine" Hamilotn too...B&B fans would cream themselves!

Demos, honestly the straight man in the comics

    by superninja

is supposed to be Abe. He's very dry and has a great sense of humor, he's not a freak. Wonderful character that they really botched.

    Yay for Bros.!

    by king_knut

I ain't queer for Luke Goss or nuffink, but I'm glad Del Toro's giving him another shot. He was possibly the best thing in Blade II (outside of the maw design and Danny John Jules being in a major movie), and I don't think he got enough attention for his role. I hope GDT once again brings out the best in him, as I genuinely believe that man has a great performance in him, given the right director. Unlike, say, Orblando, out of whom not even Scott or Jackson have managed to get anything resembling a good turn.

    the beef-Tuatha de Dannan

    by bagel13

the beef-Tuatha de Dannan are the old Irish gods, Lucas glomed the name for Willow.

The first movie was eh. It deviated too far from the comic and too many logic holes, even for a fantasy film, to make it enjoyable. Ron Perlman nailed the movie version of HB, bitter about being locked away & hidden for 60 years, but the character wasn't close enough to the comic. Movie Abe was terrible, he seemed like someone that would snap in a stiff wind instead of someone that could survive being thrown on to sharp rocks by OgoPogo. And the HB-Liz romance? Out of place and creepy. If they can get into the story and we see lots of Mignola style beasties it may be OK. Here's hoping.

Here is the problem with the first one

    by potsmokinalien

and i am not a reader of the comic so sorry if this flies in the face of whatever fans like about it but--- your protagonist can not be some taciturn asshole the entire movie, it made me feel like i was watching what hollywood's idea of the type of a guy a nerd would relate to and i did not relate to him in the slightest. forgive me for enjoying having fun and not taking my life so crushingly seriously. in fact, that whole movie sucked.

    Perlman is my hero

    by arcadiands

Can anyone name a single project that Perlman was involved in, in which he absolutely did a horrible job?
I sure can't. He absolutely steals entire movies away from people, and has got to be one of the most under-rated actors of the past 50 years. The guy takes mere walk-on roles and turns them into spotlight performances.
I think he should play Harry in the AICN Movie. Use his 'Enemy at the Gates' teeth, too.

    by doc_strange

What happened? I thought we were gonna so ol' HB mix it up with the likes of Wolfman, Mummy, and Dracula. What gives? Oh yeah, they made a HORRIBLE movie called Van Helsing a few years back. Well there goes that idea.....

Why Hellboy 1 could have been better......

    by doc_strange

They should have put more variety into the film. The martial arts Nazi guy was just generic and cliche. The baddie wasn't anything I hadn't seen before. The monster Sammy or whatever his name was just came back again and again. The movie itself didn't have much in terms of surprises. I think it had some great moments in it but overall needed something to push it over the top.

Best scene in the film in my opinion was when Hellboy's spying on Liz and the kid comes up to him and he's like "SHHHHHH!!! I'm on a mission." That was hilarious to me. Then when he throws a rock at that dude. Best things about the film: Character development, Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Jeffrey Tambor. Worst things about the film: Dragging scenes that didn't advance the story, the resurrecting, rubbery monster, the bad guy, the Nazi guy with the mask.

    by heleno

The Tuatha de Danann is the name of the race, not the name of the myth, but whatever. Very excited about seeing Irish mythology on screen - maybe it'll help me one day persuade someone to make the Tain. And rumour has it that del Toro is filming at the Giant's Causeway, which will rock well hard.

    by col. tigh-fighter

Well it was! Silly re-generating monster that you cant kill....oh wait, you can kill it right at the end. Bit Like Batman Begins magic microwaves that pass through the bags of water called people but gets the water surrounded by metal in the sewers below. I honestly shouldnt be able to spot things like that in movies. Its just plain, lazy writing.

    by bender7

I actually liked the first one. It wasn't fantastic as it could have been, but it stands the test of time as a good moive. Mainly from Perlman's performance and the nice direction. Still, hopefully this will be the Hellboy movie fans have been waiting for. Oh and ArcadianDS, Perlman is awesome but he did appear in a Uwe Boll movie remember

    by mr.underwater

Has more "making of" featurettes than any human could possibly watch or care about. But as for the cut of the movie itself, a couple scenes of Meyers and Liz making goo-goo eyes. One scene of villains in lair going "Mu-ha-ha." Not much else.

    I too liked Hellboy 1...

    by football

... and don't get the nerd hate on why it's not liked. Ok, maybe the comedy didn't always work with the darker elements of the story such as the nazi guy with the knives... who I absolutely loved... but when it worked it out spun spiderman 2 by a long way. Judging by some of the comments I've read recently it's safe to say you're going to luv Transformers which looks total shit to me, but won't give Del Toro a break, who let's face it, is 10x the director that Bay will ever be. Can't wait for HB2.

    by geddlee

On Jim Fitzpatrick, he of the classic Thin Lizzy album cover, 'Jailbreak'. Fitzpatrick rules Celtic mythology art. HB was good, just needed to have more variety with the monsters; that hurt the story overall.

    Shoulda brought back Myers

    by drath

I thought he was brought in as the new Broom. It seems like a betrayal to have Broom pass the torch to him as Hellboy's friend/confidant/human ally and then not bring him back. I know the character was created for the movie so not many will agree with me because they felt he was forced on them as another Hollywood cliche for the masses, but I think his not coming back makes Myers's presence in the first one worse for me. If Jeffrey Tambor isn't back either then shit on everything.
