"Homicide" shut down tid bit ((no spoilers))

Published at:  Mar 22, 1999 4:37:49 PM CST

Glen here...

VALEENA just sent in this brief message about NBC's under appreciated
Homicide.

Despite the general perception (and all but forgone conclusion) that Homicide would
end its run at the conclusion of this season, there have been many rumors scurrying about suggesting
that somehow...in some way...the series might "go on".

Well, Valeena's message doesn't make that prospect look too hopeful. Seems Valeena went to
an establishment frequently used for location shooting on the series, and here's what she had to
say:

This may or may not constitute "news" over on Ain't it Cool, but I was
in Fells Point yesterday and dropped in at the Waterfront Bar to grab an
Anchor Steam on tap.

All of the overhead gaffer's piping that's been
mounted in the ceiling of the bar lo these many years has been removed.

I asked the bartender what was up, and he said that they've not only
completed filming of the series for the season (maybe forever), but that
he'd seen the final script and it "sort of wrapped the series up."

I
asked him if he knew whether that meant the series was definitely NOT
going to be picked up for another season and he said that while he
didn't want to "pee in anyone's beer," (thank goodness for that!),
things didn't look good so far as he knew.

Since all those mounts for
cameras and lights had been up on the ceiling for so long - even tho'
they only shot in the Waterfront on occasion - I think that their
removal is a Very Bad Sign for the most intelligent series on TV..."

    Why.................

    by spe111

Come on, this is just absolute horse****. How can a show of the caliber of Homicide be cancelled while crap like star trek stays on the air? Ya, it's the ratings. Too bad NBC never really promoted it like that thursday night dreck. This is the only show that has ever made me feel for the characters. That is a difficult task, given what is being shown in today's age. Never had a good time slot, never had good advertising, is it any wonder it couldn't beat Nash Bridges? Even in reruns on Lifetime, it had a horrible time slot at 12:30 am central. One show that was truly intelligent and realistic, and it's gone.........I need a beer.

    Letter Campaign?

    by grp cpt mandrake

I love B5 and desperately want Crusade to continue (and wrote both WB and Sci Fi to do so), but Homicide is truly the best damn show on TV. Anybody know where and to whom letters should be directed to try and save it?

    R.I.P.

    by vitamind

What really sucks is how the quality has gone down in the past two seasons. Before, this show was kick-ass, don't-dare-miss. But lately it's just been a pale imitation of itself. I say let go gracefully. Don't prolong the pain.

    Homicide

    by black angus

I lived in Baltimore about the time they began Homicide and remember them filming the first few shows in and around Fells Point, it was the first time I got to see any behind the scenes type stuff and was pretty interesting. I agree that the show hasn't been as strong as when Andre Braugher was on it, but I'd rather watch a mediocre episode of Homicide than the best swill Nash Bridges could pump out. It's too bad, for all the support NBC gave it's other dramas ( look at the constant pushing for Emmy nominations, Tonight Show appearances for the cast, constant advertising, etc. for Law & Order and ER vs. Homicide) Homicide got the shaft, tho Andre Braughr's Emmy seemed more like a going away present than an award. Now with the looming cancellation of Millenium, it looks like my Fridays are going to be free again.

    Homicide and The Waterfront

    by laurel

The Waterfront bar mentioned in this article has recently (very recently) changed ownership. And the new owners are making changes to the Bar. So even if Homicide is renewed, I'd guess it's in doubt whether the show will use The Waterfront as a location, especially if big changes are made. Or they could write it into the show, I guess.

It's not too late to write or call NBC. They're still on the fence re Homicide (and Newsradio). While I feel the show has gone downhill in recent years, largely due to poor writing and network pressure to add romance and other crap . . . I think the show deserves one last season to wrap things up. Tons of well-known actors and directors would kill to work on the show. And maybe some familiar faces would return for an episode or two. If ever a show deserved a send off, it's Homicide.

Don't write Homicide off just yet

    by kathyw

The Waterfront bar was recently sold and the new owners don't want filming done there any more. That doesn't necessarily mean the end of the show. They plan on renovating and going upscale.

If you want to save Homicide, write Scott Sassa, Garth Ancier and Don Ohlemeyer at NBC:

    3000 W. Alameda Avenue
    Burbank, CA 91523
    818-840-4444

There has been a letter-writing campaign going on for about a month now so pick up your pencils and do your part in preserving quality TV (ok, it's not as good as it used to be, but it's still better than most TV).

    Past Glory

    by foster zygote

While I agree that the worst Homicide episode is far better than the best of a steaming heap of shit like Nash Bridges, Homicide has certainly lost a lot of altitude lately. When was the last good scene in "the Box"? I'm affraid the quality of episodes like the ones with Robin Williams, Bruno Kirby, and Lilly Tomlin is lost to us. I miss Stan, Kay, Crosetti etc. The new cast just isn't that compelling to me. At least G and Munch are still around. I think that the main problem is that the no-tallent business majors in charge wouldn't know quality if it swallowed them whole.

    Unfortunately...RIP

    by 6666

I have to agree...Although I love this show like no other, it is probably time to let it go gracefully. This season, the writers have been at a loss without Pembleton and the whole Luther Mahoney stuff (while Bayliss gets ignored, for the most part)...While there have been a few high points, the overall quality is going down - and I hate to see that...Why not wrap things up with a big two hour final episode (with a cameo from Pembleton???)? Certain characters could always return in their own TV movies or perhaps on Law and Order...We'll always have the re-runs, some of which are like great movies to be watched again and again...10 years from now, people will point to Homicide as a turning point in TV drama - and I bet the episodes will still be running on cable!

    Damn that Andre Braugher

    by wildsmith

Dammit, I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT when Pembleton threw down his shield that this show wasn't long for the world. Andre put the writers and producers in a hell of a spot - who else could convey Pembleton's fire and angst? Certainly not Giancarlo Esposito. Mike G. has been a waste of screen time, and from what I read in interviews with Esposito, he's been unhappy with his role as well. And if Barry Levinson had gone out and found an actor of Braugher's caliber (a damn hard thing to do)

    the decline of Homicide

    by jamison

They had a hole season to plan for Andre Braughers departure, and they wasted it. For the last tow or three years the show had mainly focused mainly on the Balis/Pembleton and Lewis/Kellerman partnership, both of which they lost, leaving Balis and Lewis hanging without partners and without any relationship established to the new characters they brought in. Nor had they done enough to develop any of the 3 new characters they brought in (save maybe Jon Seda) or had they used Stivers to her full potential (she was much better used and developed in the Luther Mahony stories than when she joined the Dept.) Still, I don't think they spent enough groundwork for the departures and bringing in new faces when they weren't using the talent they had just added to the problem. Previously the show had managed to survive the departures of Kay Howard, Bolander, Meagan Russert, Beau, and Crosseti without missing a beat. I wish they had just ended the series when they lost Pembleton and Kellerman.

    Homicide

    by javacycle

There does come a point when you have to give up the ghost. With the departure of Pembleton last season, the show lost its center, its soul. That's not to say that its lost quality or that it lacks talent. But it truly isn't the same, and you can feel it when you watch it. I doubt that they can rekindle that energy now. Perhaps it would be better suited if the sparks were aimed at Fontana's other show, Oz, or maybe create a new drama with new characters. Start over from scratch. I would be sorry to see this intelligent drama disappear without ever really acheiving the recognition it so richly deserved, but that happens, on television and in life. If this is the last season of Homicide, then I want to thank the creators for years of wonderful and thought-provoking programming. If it isn't, then I wish you the best of luck.

    UN-believable

    by crit

Homicide, like all great things, must come to an end. Really, the end came with Pembelton's departure. Braugher's was the intensity that everyone else fed off of. And there was a
chemistry that has long since been lost on the show. It seems
like the show got tired; so the producers went the MAKE-OVER route
with one too many pretty dics. That model who is on the show is the worst casting choice I've ever seen made. As hot as she is to look at, she has been the main reason that I've lost interest in the show. She helped the show lose it's hard-earned BELIEVABILITY.

I'm Almost Ashamed To Admit It...

    by moriarty

... but I gave up on the show about six episodes in this year. The jump in quality from the end of last season to the beginning of this was jarring. It was just too much for me to take.

I mean, last season was a thing of beauty, and that shootout at the end of the season was amazing. The resignations, the firings, the entire Mahoney storyline... everything worked. And when Pembleton followed Kellerman out the door, that should have been it.

Hell, as far as my viewing is concerned, it is.

I love Fontana as a writer, and I cherish OZ now with the same intensity I used to cherish HOMICIDE. I don't think his talent's going to go to waste anytime soon. Let this one fade quietly now with some of its tattered dignity intact.

    "Moriarty" out.

    Homicide

    by minta4

I just wrote I comment but I'm new to this forum-thing and didn't know I had to have a secret password and all.I kind of shot my
wad(can I say that?)on my unintentional 1st draft.Anyway, the gist was Homicide is the best show on tv.I started watching last season. The first episode I saw was the one when Baylis gets dumped by the ME(can't remember her name). The next episode was with Peter Gallagher. It blew me away! I couldn't believe a major network show was actually exploring the ambiguous sexuality of a main character!I was hooked. My folks are the ones who hooked me by the way.I inturn hooked them on X-Files(another show that has seen better seasons).I was pissed when NBC kept showing MFT dramas last summer instead of reruns of Homicide. I needed to catch up! Then I discovered reruns on Lifetime. Psyched! But then just as quickly they went away. Which is just as well because I kept forgetting to tape them and my husband would have divorced me if I stayed up late every night to watch.I've sinced hooked him.We had a blast drinking beer and watching Homicide on President's day. It was our Super Bowl.even my kids like Homicide(sometimes).I will try to write to NBC but I tend to have a seive-like memory when it comes to correspondence of that sort.So if it isn't renewed you can blame me.I have to sign-off to say the rosary with my family(yes I'm serious!)and I'll say a little secret prayer for Homicide(and also that they'll dump Shepherd and the writing will get better--all stuff I mentioned in my 1st draft)

    Homicide

    by queens

Homicide is the only show on television worth staying home for. If it is taken off the air I will be very sad, but it might be better than continuing down the current road the show has taken. Trying to be more viewer friendly by adding cheesy romance and pretty faces is really ruining the once brilliant and edgy show. Fortunately, up here in Canada we get reruns every weeknight at midnight on Bravo! This has been my saving grace as I can watch the show as I want to remember it - heart stopping and intelligent - not lame and lagging. If we are going to save it, let's tell NBC to butt out and let Fontana & Levinson work their old magic!
