IRON MAN is causing destruction on the freeway!!!

Published at:  May 30, 2007 2:51:50 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It's been a little while since we've had our dose of IRON MAN picture goodness. We have a spy report and a quickly snuck pic for you. A word of warning, the pic is a bit blurry, but you do see Iron Man and some freeway destruction. Thanks to Ozymandias for the report! Enjoy! (and be sure to click on the pic for a bigger version)

Hey Moriarty/Harry,

Long time, first time.

I live down in Long Beach (home of the Queen Mary and MANY movie and TV shoots) and came across Iron Man filming down here for about a 10 day period 2 weeks ago. Seems that they were filming a freeway action sequence.

I had an interesting view of the shoot because my gym is there and the parking structure overlooked what was going on. The first night (which I don't have a picture of) had a traffic jam and a big rig. The big rig had a large hole blown out of the side of it. The concrete wall behind the truck also had a large hole that seemed to be from some sort of blast. I peeked over and walked away.

Of course I had to go back the next night and "work out" again. This time I came armed with my camera. Two security guys were stationed in the structure this time so I just took another peek and went to the gym. When I came back I noticed the security guys were having lunch behind a car so I took my chance...I grab my camera and was able to snap the attached picture. At that moment I heard footsteps racing toward me. I slipped my camera back into my pocket acted like I was coming from the gym...seems there was a third security guy lurking who saw me nonchalantly snapping away.

I thought I was only taking a photo of the car suspended from the crane and the "hole" in the wall, little did I know that IRON MAN was right freakin' there ALSO!!!.

Enjoy the pic and call me Ozymandias if you must.

Looks like the camera is mounted above the SUV, looking down. I'd be willing to bet that SUV is on a rig that causes it to flip and the shot will be the SUV flipping over Iron Man. Thoughts?

    To Be Honest...

    by ribbons

...I'm looking forward to 'Iron Man' as much as the next fella, but Hellboy, Night Watch, Spider-Man 2 and Fantastic Four want their scene back. In the context of the film I'm sure it'll be fine, but it's kind of hard to get excited for a gimmick that's been done about half a dozen times in the last 5 years.

    by pkdkeith

I can tell by the wheels and proportions of the vehicle that it's not an SUV. It's actually a mean station wagon - the Dodge Magnum.

Either way though, I think Iron Man is in great hands. From previous reports, I can tell that Favereau is trying to throw some hard pre-CGI action into the thing (this shot is evidence of that), and I think that is exactly how Iron Man ought to be treated.

Of course, everyone who's read Ultimate Iron man will disagree with me. But that's the post-widescreen comics world for you.

    by buzz maverik

The average freeway speed in LA is 11 mph. I want to see that in a superhero movie. The Batmobile in gridlocke with the Fantasticar while the bus from SPEED blows up because you can't get anywhere near 50 mph except for a second or two at a time.

Oh, give me a break. I'm not an advocate of apathy for apathy's sake by any means, but I've SEEN THIS SHOT a squillion times before. I'm not being a "hater" and of course I appreciate the fact that Quint and everyone else who tends to the site puts in an effort, but I'm not gonna geek out over old hat. I thought pointing out the fact that a similar gimmick has been done in a handful of films in the last several years was as worthwhile a comment as anything else, but apparently "thanks for the effort" was the correct answer.

Maybe the reason the Iron Man filmmakers seem to be faithfully following the comic book source material (like with the costume) is because they have so little creativity and imagination of their own? i.e. flying cars...but have to admit a flying car makes a formidable weapon of opportunity...

I reckon Jon favreau will do a great job, and from what he said at a screening of Made and Swingers about two months ago, I am convinced he wants to make something different, ie. good!

As for the quality of the picture, well, it's not easy taking a long exposure, hand-held, while security guards lurk nearby!
