This is the genuine, official, actual CGI series we've been hearing so much about - not that STAR WARS ANIMATED: TALES OF THE NEW REPUBLIC fan made thingie.

I'm not knocked out by some of the character rendering here...some of these folks look a touch constipated, bug eyed, and creepy. But the Clone Troopers seem pretty groovy, the action could be a lot of fun, and I'm loving the deep color palette of this footage.
This said, I've been hungering for a cool CGI SF action/adventure series for a long time. Since ROUGHNECKS: THE STARSHIP TROOPERS CHRONICLES left the air...the field's seemed kind of barren.

For some reason everybody has to invent a new technology to show trailers in, and if it's not Quicktime it never works for me. (And with the last security update, for the first time Quicktime stopped working half the time.) For some reason all the video on this new Star Wars site will stream for about 20 seconds, then jump back to the beginning and not restart. You can't load it and then watch it, you can't drag the bar around, and you can never get past 20 seconds.
I did get to see the Lucasfilm logo though. That was awesome. -

you're right that the field's been a little barren. Back in the late 90s/early 00s there were a bunch of good scifi cg shows like War Planets, Beast Wars, Voltron 3D, and Roughnecks. You would have thought it would've progressed with advances in computer animation. I'm guessing what happened is that the networks all realized it was much cheaper to just dub crappy anime shows into English than create something original.

...seeing as that Lucas has been filming HD Digital for years I would imagine that the show would be broadcast in HD but I think ultimately it's going to be down to whatever channel gets it. If it's Cartoon Network there's no HD broadcast, if it's a network, then it's definatly a possability. I'm also curious about what ground they're really going to cover since the CW seems to be pretty well mined at this point unless they are re-making the entire CW micro series from the ground up which would be interesting and welcome as I liked it but the way it was done in five minute incriments left alot to be desired even the 12 minute ones were just too damn short

The last movie on Cartoon Network the one with Live action and animation was on Comcast OnDemand in HD for a couple weeks after. That is if this is going to be shown on CN.

Since we know Anakin survives and then some, where is ANY dramatic tension in Baldy hunting him down? Why should we give a rat's ass about Dooku or Grevious, since neither of them even survive through the last reel of RotS? Honestly, the CG isn't far removed from the actual effects of the prequels. I'll watch because I love Star Wars and if it's well-done, that's that. But since the prequels are so fresh in everyone's mind (not to mention two Clone Wars minis that took us RIGHT UP TO the opening battle of RotS) wouldn't all this time, money, and talent be better spent by A. Pleasing the fans with a post-RotJ storyline or B. Doing a complete 180 turn and going back to the Old Republic, or at least some sort of conflict we've NEVER SEEN? Like I said, will definitely watch it, but at first glance this isn't the kind of show I'll be planning entire nights around.

I too feel that perhaps the Clone Wars have been well mined inbetween the series, the comics and the books. I hadn't thought about the dramatic tension aspect, but I think they figure since we knew Anakin became Vader and what happened to Obi Wan and all of that that it doesn't matter. I would love to see them make an animated film of the first KOTOR game that would be amazing, maybe a series about the rise and fall of Revan and Malek would be a great one as well. But I think a post ROTJ series would be good as well.

Seriously, lets see some shit we haven't seen like fun action packed stories from the old republic or the shit going on while luke skywalker is growing up between 'revenge of the sith' and 'a new hope' OR EVEN FOR FUCK SAKES give us something after return of the jedi... im sure not everything is all sunshine and lolipops afterwards. Fuck lucas and the bag of money he rode in on. If he thinks fans are going to swallow some shitty clone wars animated series he's unforunately correct. But I for one will probably won't watch this crap. There's alot of stuff in the EU clone wars books, especially shades of Anakin's turn that are completely left out of the previous series. So I think if they are going to mine the books and comics for storylines there is some good material there, hell one of the comics had Durge and Ventris using chemical warfare on the Gungan's so there's some good stuff in there. As far as original content the only thing I could see from the trailer is another Anakin Dooku fight. I agree that there is alot more fertile ground in the Old Republic or Post ROTJ but even that has been fairly well mined in the comics and books.

They have released 30 different covers with a different SW character on each. I got Han Solo, I don't think i've ever spent as much time deciding in a newsagents, it was quite embarrasing.They also have a previously lost interview with Lucas from while he was making A New Hope, he even mentions how he is having trouble convincing Alec Guiness.

And I don't have a problem with what he told or the characters or even Jar Jar.I just had a big problem with the lack of classic adventure in the PT.I didn't hate any character, I just couldn't find one I could relate to the way I could with Han or Luke. I still watch the PT and I love what they add to the mythology but they don't entertain me in the way the OT did. It's not blind nostalgia, it the fact that they are different types of film. The OT could be understood even if there was no sound, that was the essense of that type of film. The PT are a different beast, less concerned with telling a good story in moment and more concerned with telling a history which spans 30 odd years. If you ask Lucas he would probably agree, he never wanted the PT to be admired for the same reasons as the OT.

2 things that will decide if this has been worth developing. Will it be superior to Genndys toonami epic? I dont think so. And will it give depth to the Sith philosophy? I dont think so. All the good stuff was in Genndy's toonami series. The CGI makes it look slow and clunky. Genndy's animation made it kinetic. Lucasfilm has cut its balls off again.

the reason we don't see anything after Jedi is because that's where Lucas's story ends. Others have gone on to continue the story but its not offical "Lucas Movie Fodder" He never wrote anything beyond the 6 movies, and everything about chapters 7-9 is all false and grew from rumours. This will be cool by the looks of it, but I'm waiting for the live action series that takes place between EP3 and 4.

He lives up to his own standards now and as sole creater and supreme Jedi goober this universe shapes to his will as does the look. We all wish we had this chance. ILM is down the street from me and its just cool knowing its there and doing what its doing, 'cuz without it we would never have gotten Battle Beyond the Stars and Space Hunter and Battlestar and the '80's Buck Rogers and, and, and . . . life better with than without.

And should add further depth to Lucas' Star Wars universe. The Clone Wars cartoons were neat, but this looks closer to the movies, and the drama will come across better. And it seems the point of telling this story again is that Lucas seems intent on furthering the next generation of Star Wars fans.

After the release of the Prequel films, it seems the the point of this entire adventure was to bring balance to the Force. Luke Skywalker does that at the end of ROTJ. He brings compassion and emotion to the Force, without going to the Dark Side. Kind of like the Oours and the Skeksis coming together at the end of Dark Crystal. Balance. End of story.

There weren't that many episodes, and the animation wasn't amazing (but it was definitely decent). Having said that, from what I remember the show was a lot more faithful to the novel than the film was (i.e. it focused solely on the soldiers, the grunts, dealing with different battles on various planets). At the time I watched it (years ago now) I couldn't get enough of the STARSHIP TROOPERS universe and the show definitely kicked ass at the time. I just can't say for certain how well it holds up now.

Cool series, but it was oversold by the network. They promised impossible weekly delivery dates with almost no lead in time, so the FX houses never caught up. As a result we saw a very tight arc story run out of sequence. Designs and characters were largely based on the movie but with no Betty and Veronica back story. I read the complete story outline years ago and it woul have ended with a bug vs. human showdown in San Francisco.

The character animation, the movement, is amazing! Especially on the Sith char's -- the female with the double-sided light saber a la Darth Maul, and the other Sith (Dooku, I believe, but it's shadowy) who whips out the red saber. Sweet. Anyone who doesn't like it is a HATER and not a TRUE FAN and can go HUMP A RONTO. Ha haaaaaa....

Unless we're going to see a young, novice Darth Vader finding his feet as the galaxy's biggest badass. The only way I would even be slightly interested in this show is if it creates a whole new story arc with new characters, and all the "popular" characters of the prequels only have supporting roles. This is a tease.
The new game 'Force Unleashed' looks way more interesting than this in terms of story, and it's a frigging video game. -

It's my understanding that Clone Wars is - just as the name implies - an animated series to improve upon the animated-shorts shown on Cartoon Network. Then Lucas will make a live action TV series that takes place between ROTS and ANH - mostly focusing on lesser known characters. Per the articles about the "Force Unleashed" video game.... nothing has really ever been done between ROTS and ANH, i.e. it's fertile ground for Lucas to cover when he's ready. My only wish in regards to the animated series is that they should have made the characters look more real like virtual humans instead of cartoony characters.

The subject matter of the the fanmade thing was better because the clone wars kind of has a "we know how it turns out" vibe (which we did NOT have with the first series, because Ep. 3 hadn't come out yet), but the clone wars deserves to be seen. Other than Obi Wan, I think it looks pretty good.

...Clone War series and the Prequel movies. The character animation is based on the animated series, yet the the ships, backgrounds, and apparent mood are from the films. This new CGI series should successfully bridge the gap between the two, as previously the two never seemed to mesh well together. Lucas may be a scoundrel hack sometimes, but he has his moments...

Look at the timestamps of our posts. Obviously, I was writing mine at the same time you posted yours. Nevertheless, I stand by my opinion. To clarify: I DO care about the prequels, because I wish they were better executed at every creative level -- from story, to the acting, even ship design. For those of us who grew up with the original trilogy, I firmly believe that in our imaginations, the Clone Wars and Anakin's fall have far more mythic resonance than any official Lucasfilm product.

This might go a long way to restoring many childhoods destroyed by the prequels. Though considering the oodles of cash Lucas blows his nose with, you'd think they'd do a better job with character design. Pixar quality CGI for the entire series would've been nice. We all know it's in his budget.... not to mention the huge revenue stream that's going to come from this series. Oh well. At least SW still lives on.

I'm even sick of the music. I'm sick of boring Jedi. I wanna get away from the prequels, but Lucas wants to shove them down our throat! Give me the SW I know and love. What happens after Return of the Jedi? In between the original series and a little before the original series. Give me my SW damn it!!!

...is an absurd expectation. Pixar movies last an hour and half. This Clone War series is an entire season's worth. The amount of rendering, storage space, money, and creative talent to make this multiplex feature quality would be astronomical. This is television, the standard is less. Besides, when you're not seeing a character, you might as well be watching a Star Wars feature anyway. The graphics are good enough. It's the story and heart and soul that will define this series as worthy.

True, with the exception of the Darth Maul duel, the formation of the Empire at the end of ATOC, and most of Revenge of the Sith, the Prequels were dreck. But perhaps Lucas is making up for that with this new CGI series? Perhaps he is making this new Prequel universe something that disillusioned Star Wars fans can finally approve of? You'll watch it anyway, that's for sure. And nothing happens after ROTJ because the prophecy is complete, balance is brought to the Force. The Clone Wars saga has an undertapped potential for character drama, cool fight scenes, and entertaining action. Why fight it? There are worse ways to spend time sitting in front of a TV...

As long as Lucas is going to a cartoon, why not make one about the characters people actually liked and want to see more of (Luke, Han, Leia, Lando, etc). You could never get those actors back (and they're all way too old anyway) but you could bring the characters back in animation.... yet, he choose to give us more this prequel crap. Sigh.

Think about it. Do you really want to see a cartoon featuring Han, Leia, Lando, Luke, etc..? The only story that really mattered in the OT, post New Hope, was the one between Luke and Vader. That story was told. Everyone else's problems, as scripted by Lawrence Kasdan, was adult in nature. I don't think Han and Leia's love/hate relationship would lend itself to a cartoon series. And do you really want to see a dicrepid old Yoda slowly losing his sanity in solitary isolation on Dagobah? Maybe the only thing exciting you could pull out of the OT is Boba Fett's story. The story of the OT characters was told. And as for something about the Star Wars universe just previous to New Hope, I don't think anything really interesting happened except for an evergoing Empire pulling its muscle over the galaxy while an inept Jedi-less rebellion was getting its ass kicked until Darth Vader's son enters the scene. Okay, maybe we could see the intergalactic dope-smuggling adventures of Han and Chewie...

The art direction is itself fairly decent, though the texture work leaves a whole lot to be desired.
More over, it seems that they've never heard of the concept of character animation before. It would seem to me that, given the production constraints, the quality of the character animation itself is fairly low. What little character work is demonstrated in that trailer is stilted, as if there's not much blending or overlap.
Considering the medium, one would have hoped for that level of character animation be as stylized as the designs themselves. To me at least, the CA work briefly demonstrated here is barely Reboot level.
Remember, I'm not talking about the actual modeling or texturing, but the character animation itself.
The overall vibe I'm getting is that of a Star Wars game or a fan-made CG flick. It's certainly not film-level CG. It's actually a slight step behind the long canceled "King of the Pride".
As a professional CG animator myself, I found this trailer to be mediocre at best. Then again, maybe I'm being overly critical and should turn off my artist's eye. Probably. -

Really, this looks cool. I'm excited to have a more real deal big time Clone Wars (Gennedy's was awesome but I need the spectacle) but fucking COME ON!!! We want X-Wings, Millenium Falcons, Jedi's who don't know how to leap around like chinese action stars. Seriously, I'm excited for this, and it looks amazing but please... bring us to the universe we know.

I didn't really follow the plot. And I'm not sure I understood the ending. Did he run away? I liked the characterization bit with R2-D2, though I really got a feeling that his head was rotating 360 degrees an he was making a whistling sound. And Yoda was so... green. <P. Was that one spaceship supposed to have one wing like that or did they forget to finish that part?

But like someone else said, I'm pretty much uninterested in the Lucas prequel universe. Recently reading that Kurtz interview from a few years ago pretty much verified that Lucas doesn't care about stories anymore. He knows the fanboys will buy anything he makes, regardless of quality. The artwork is fine, but there's no drama since we know how these characters really end up. I kind of wish he made an animated series based after ROTJ. But he seems pretty divorced from anything after that film.

His rendition sounds awful, nothing like Frank Oz. I actually have been told that my impersonation is almost spot on except for not being able to do it for an extended period as my voice gets strained. But geez, if I can do it better than the guy who's been hired then there must be a ton of better Yoda voices. What the hell?

they expect to start airing the series in Fall of 2008. AND at this time they cannot say where it will air 'cause they are negotiating. AND YES, George Lucas does give input here and there but mostly lets them do their thing. They sprung the trailer on us as a last second surprise after saying they could not show us anything. Some poor saps actually left the room to get a jump on the rest of the goings-on!!! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!

Frankly, I don't get it. What exactly is the point to doing this?From a TECHNICAL point of view, it basically looks all right. Sure, you can always bitch about a particular design element...the stylization to the animation overall...the quality of the voice work...yada, yada, yada. Or for this talkback should that be yoda, yoda, yoda?The point being, we could all spend an eternity nitpicking "how" we think it should technically look. But we're all never going to agree on that since it's just a matter of taste, so I have no problem moving past all that. Fine -- to each his own.But in the far larger scheme of things, and speaking as a lifelong Star Wars fan -- and yes, I'm old enough to say I was there back in May of '77 to see SW when it first debuted -- I don't get WHY I should care about this. As others have noted, but I'll echo it as well, I ALREADY know how this all ends. No matter WHAT dire situation Obi Wan or Anakin or Yoda or Mace or Dooku or General Grievous...yada, yada, yada, yoda, yoda, yoda...get themselves into, I already know they're never in harms way. That nothing will actually change or affect them. Because I've already SEEN the end results. I not only know where it's headed, I literally DO know how it ends.So since there's literally NO dramatic tension or suspense involved here, what's the point? Other than to fill in some minutia that is only interesting in a truly, truly diehard "I'm such a SW geek that I need to know the backstory that explains why Dooku's belt buckle was the one he chose to wear that day" type of way.The problem with this series is painfully obvious: it should have come out before SITH. Hell, let's face it -- the prequels really should have BEEN the cartoon series. The prequels would've been a helluva lot more interesting and fun if we really did see a live action Clone Wars all out rather than what we were subjected to -- which was ATOC telling us "Oh look! The Clone Wars have begun!" (which at least seemed promising), but then cheating us by having the opening sequence of SITH being "Oops! You blinked! KOTOR was a truly kickass game and PROVED you could do an amazing SW storyline AWAY from the Lucas films. Seriously - the Clone Wars stuff was covered enough with the prequels and the other animated series. I personally like the idea of the "New Republic" series a lot better, especially if Lucas is too pussy to do a third trilogy set AFTER the original three.

As a few talkbackers have already said , setting this series inbetween an established timeline , is just going to rob it of all surprise and tension .That's one of the main reasons the prequel triology didn't work ..telling peaple a story they already more or less know...veeeerrrrrryyy sssloooowlllyyy...doesn't make for edge of the seat drama.The average punter doesn't have a clue what happened to Luke and co ,post rotjedi so thered be ample room for a bit of suspense at least!
Roughnecks was kinda cool , but the storylines just seemed to repeat endlessly ..Capt Scarlet rocked ..but was shown at some pretty randome times in GB.They chopped each episode into about 3 bits and spread it over some godawful saturday morning kids tv show! -

I love star wars - all of it, Original, Prequels, Clone Wars shorts. But I agree with MCVamp. I feel no excitement for this CGI series becasue I sense no drama, nothing new. Trailer looks great but I just dont feel any passion for it. Which is a first for me and anything starwars. If it was set in Old rebublic times or even post ROTJ then my interest would be piqued. For the sake of Lucasfilm, shouldnt they b trying to make us excited - why are they shying away from doing something away from the Anakin\Luke eras? Perhaps they will - they probably just want to experiment with some technoloical advances with a storyline concept they already have plenty of resources for. I also sense a desperation for them to keep the franchise healthy by not departing too far away from the familiar canvas. Yet I feel they would spark so much more interest if they announced an Old Republic setting which everyone knows about. And I dont mean just RPG games players and EU readers but ROTS viewers were given a delicious taste of the Old republic by Sidious/Palpatine fable to Anakin. Well it took 20 odd years for them to give us a prequel trilogy. I reckon it will happen but it may take a little while for them to bring us an Old Republic fable. In the mean time, lets enjoy what they have given us already again - including the amazing Clone Wars shorts!

That actually looks 100 x better than the shit-fest that was ROTS, AOTC... well, ALL the PT to be honest. That said, I'm concerned about the portrayal of Jedi in this; we have a Jedi leaping spectacularly from ship to ship disabling each one as they go, yet in AOTC, Jedi's are killed like bitches by spindly, brainless robots with bananas for heads. It doesn't add up.

So then what was the point of seeing a Prequel Trilogy, whether it would've been good or not? We know (almost) all the Jedi get whacked, we know everybody dies, we know the Emperor will win, we know Anakin turns to the Dark Side. Because you all wanted to see how it happened, right? The only important thing to know about what happens in the end is that Darth Vader becomes Anakin again, kills the Emperor, and brings balance to the Force through his son Luke. Everything else is an adventure, a story to be told. And there is much potential in the Clone Wars saga. AOTC and ROTS only showed us the beginning and the end of the Clone Wars. The Tartakovsky cartoons only touched on the Wars, really showed more individual adventures than anything. This new CGI series looks to truly give us the Clone Wars as it needs to be seen, a proper link between the animated series and the films. And maaybe we'll see more of the Jedi Knights, because they scantly involved those guys in either the cartoons or the films.

Why? Can't the Star Wars universe take a break after three decades of Clone Wars fighting and dark Empire rule? Can't you just be content to see Luke bring Anakin back from the Sith, to bring balance to the Force? Was everyone's pain, suffering, and death through six films all for nothing? Do you really need to see the Star Wars universe all f****ed up again, with (according to that fan-made trailer) light sabre duels (which means the Sith are back), and Stormtroopers blasting away? Peace and balance are brought to the universe, can't you be content with that? Do you really want to see a dark future (because that's what you'll get, otherwise it'd be boring) for Luke, Han, Leia, and their descendants? Can't they all just live happily ever after?

Did you see some Episode VII film that nobody else did? The Star Wars saga officially ended with ROTJ. And yeah, the Emperor was killed, the Empire basically demolished, there's no problem with a power vacuum as Leia is ready step in as Queen of the Universe. At the end of ROTJ, the universe was celebrating, the fireworks were going off, the old gang is partying with the Ewoks, and the spirits of the Jedi look on in approval. What more do you need to see?

Yet notice in the Godfather 2, Vito getting killed was never even brought up. Coppola knew that we knew he survived into old age, so he never wasted a second with an obviously false cliffhanger. The SW prequels continually put characters we know to survive for decades into "danger". Ryu is totally right. Prequels to cliffhanger action movies never work.

It was not dragged out over the course of three movies. If you would have had ONE prequel paced like GF II showing Anakin's life rise and fall, it could have been another ESB...AND it was IMPORTANT to show Vito's rise to power because it was a dramatic parallel to Michael's rise to power at the cost of HIS soul in GF II. The prequel trilogy could be all time 1,2 & 3 at the box office, and the films would all still SUCK. New generation SW fans (and some old) seemingly don't want to accept the reality that A. Luca$ raped our childhoods with Jar-Jar, Midichlorians, Mannequin, NOOOOOO!! and the countless other ways in which the PT was a disgrace and an insult. You were given shit by Luca$ and you ACCEPTED it. Well, us "Haters" are the new rebellion, I guess, because we didn't, we won't, and we're sick of the Prequel world. ADVANCE THE STORY FORWARD.

As for the Midichlorians, the Force had to be explained scientifically somehow, otherwise, how could Luke have it but not Han or anyone else? There had to be something physical there...just naming it was a bad idea... Haydn's acting got better and more comfortable over the course of II and III, paralleling the rise of his Jedi powers. And when Darth Vader yells "Noooo!", keep in mind that this isn't the cold and heartless Darth Vader from Episodes IV-VI, this was basically still youthful Anakin in the Vader uniform, he still had some of humanity left. And you can't advance the story further because there's no story to tell, the Force is brought into balance at the end of ROTJ, Luke brings passion and emotion and feelings (which the Sith embraced) to the Force which never worked for the old Jedi way, which cold, detached, and emotionless.

Take the name Star Wars out of the titles of Episodes 1 through 3 and they would have been direct-to-video Babylon5 TNT TV movies. At least Babylon5 was able to hire Martin Sheen for THEIR horrible movie.

Empire Strikes Back is one of my favorite films of all time. You know, the one that Lucas had the smallest role in. Lucas is a good producer, but a poor director, and a horrible writer. You know what...maybe not even a good producer. What talented producer would have released the first Star Wars movie in 20 years centered around a child actor?

...this show, although I do like sharp-edged CGI, the action looks boss and it is nice to have a new Star Wars release of some kind, embodies everything that has been so disappointing about the prequels, and what has happened to Star Wars in the last eight years. Instead of doing something new and fresh, Lucas just keeps with what's safe and ultimately boring, instead of mixing things up he consistently sticks to the status quo. I will see this show at some point, but I'm not insane about seeing, AGAIN, a bunch of battle droids and clonetroopers blasting at each other. What's going to be done here that wasn't seen in the Clone Wars cartoon shorts or in the Clone Wars material of the actual films? This issue has been well covered by everyone else here, of course, but what about some new characters? Old Republic? New Republic? And some other foe than those fucking battle droids? Set a new show one million years in the future after the Battle of Endor and don't even bother with a Skywalker reference. You did the Clone Wars, Lucas. You did the life of Anakin. You had almost twenty years to plan, prepare and create these stories, and it turned out to be lukewarm at best. If you don't want Star Wars to be remembered as a gigantic "could have been," stop reminding us of the damn prequels and how much rehashing and reheating was involved. I doubt anyone but the most hardcore of the hardcore Star Wars fans would actually consider this show to be the best path that the series can take. Wait, there will be one whole episode about no one but Kit Fisto!? Oh shit!

The Jedi seem way too powerful in the animated stuff. In the 2nd season of the Animated Clone Wars - Mace and Yoda pick up all kinds of stuff, i.e. droid drop ships, hundreds of droids at a time, etc. and yet in the movies - as noted above - the Jedi die by the dozens when attacked by droids and you never see 'em doing all the force lifting that you see in the cartoons. So I guess you just have to take that kind of stuff with a grain of salt.

Most of the Haters wanted gallant Jedi, a Manicheaen war, and a badass Darth Vader. Lucas took the more intriguing route and turned the series on its head, showing us a corrupt religious order, a war bereft of purpose, and a Vader who was just as much a victim as he was a transgressor. Compared to the PT outlines offered up by fans, I thank Christ the prequels turned out as they did.

As far as the new special editions are concerned, in ROTJ, Vader never turns back to the light. Sure, maybe his dark self makes the sacrifice to destroy the Emperor, but clearly at the end, the ghost is of YOUNG Anakin, BEFORE turning to the dark side. Which means old Vader was just pure evil. No redemtion. Luke didn't help him see shit. He just wanted to take over from the Palpy. Oh, yea, and they should have tested the Death Star on Naboo. Hence it should have been a pile of asteroids during the finale "celebration". Special Editions suck my balls. That is all.

Okay, but the Jedi Knights and great villains like General Grievous were hardly explored in the films or the cartoons. I think a whole episode of Kit Fisto is a great idea, getting to know the Old Jedi Knight Order. It would make witnessing their demise in ROTS much more emotional, as we hardly knew these characters. The fall of the Jedi scene in ROTS would be that much more powerful. Of course, these old Jedi seemed like a bunch of self-righteous pompous windbags, but still... I am by no means a hardcore Star Wars fan, but this CGI series seems to be the best path Lucas needs to take the franchise, instead of listening to all you "true" Star Wars fans who hate the Prequels and would rather see Lucas bury it and pretend it doesn't exist...yeah...that's a great path to take...

If Lucas truly knew where he was going with the Prequels, he would have had Qui-Gon appear at the end of the Special Edition ROTJ, too. Since, isn't Qui-Gon the one who taught Yoda and Obi-wan how to do the whole "bodyless Jedi soul" thing? Yea. I'm not saying the material and characters of the prequel universe is bad, but the films were poorly executed. I honestly can't see how anyone who can read above a 5th grade level can listen to the dialogue in Phantom Menace and not cringe horribly. Not that Lucas's dialogue in New Hope was much better, but it was FUN!! Not a fucking political borefest interlaced with WAAAAY overblown fights that had no heart or tension. And come on, what the hell was the deal with the 50 force fields that close in sequence? Wouldn't that be like, some kind of containment system for something? Releasing hazardous gas or some shit? What the fuck was that big stupid place? Almost as bad as the 15 foot long scaffolding hanging in the middle of a football stadium sized hole in the center of Bespin. Whatever, I love Star Wars, I won't deny it. But unless they clean up this animation, maybe make it look a little better than the FMV's from "X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter", I probably won't dig on "Clone Wars 2: 2Cloned 2B Serious" Then again, I have a whole year and a half to change my mind, so go ahead Georgie. ...yes, expanding on characters who got shafted in the films is all well and good, but how many chances has Lucas and his team had to do just that? There has already BEEN a Clone Wars cartoon series, dozens upon dozens of comic books and video games, all detailing this whole area of the Star Wars universe, and yet for all of these efforts, I can't really tell you a damn thing about Kit Fisto except that he looks cool, can live underwater and was based on the alien baby from Men in Black. How many elaborate backstories can any one of us who grew up with Star Wars, whether when the films were first released in theaters (probably most of you) or when they were released on video and TV in the late 80s (like me), shoot out concerning such non-characters as IG-88, Mon Mothma, or even the God damn Rancor Keeper (Harry cameo?)...? Sure, we all can. Now, do you really know all that much about the ostensibly super-important Jedi Masters on the Council in the prequels? Even about Mace Windu? I doubt any of the young people who have grown up watching the prequels really give a shit about Mace Windu like we gave a shit about IG-88 and Admiral Motherfuckin Ackbar. Yet Mace Windu says and does a hell of a lot more than IG-88. What's the difference? Context. Check out IG-88 in Empire. He's a bad-ass pipe-robot who appears out of nowhere in the mist and shadows of the Star Destroyer bridge and wordlessly declares his intentions to hunt down, without disintegrating, mind you, our man Han Solo. Who in the hell is this robot? What's his deal? Where does he come from and what is he after? Now check out Mace Windu. He's arguably one of the major characters in a series of THREE films. Do you really know that much more about him than IG-88, who must be in ESB for five seconds, and I think is even cut out of the pan-and-scan versions of the film? Do you WANT to know more? The world IG-88 lives in is mysterious, exciting, dangerous; the world Mace Windu lives in is bland, boring and dull in a tacky way. I do like certain aspects of the prequels and they are slickly made, but they fail on every level to recapture the energy and passion that the original films had; I don't believe this is merely because I'm now 23 and I can no longer grasp the "child-like wonder" Lucas is touting these films cater to - I believe there is a basic, intrinsic dullness to these new movies that makes them pale in comparison to the originals whether I was 23 or 9. Give me your treasured Mace Windu anecdotes, where you detail the great history of his adventures. Can you, really, without now rocketing off to starwars.com? But I bet most of you can tell me right away that, in some obscure, weird twist, IG-88's mind was controlling the second Death Star.

CGI animated movies? Oh, you mean, these are supposed to be cartoons? Well, I thought that's what those last 3 movies that just came out were. They certainly looked like cartoons to me. It's too bad the youll brothers are only cover designers and painters and not animated artists. If they were to team up and do an animated series, doing all the designs and drawings, and animation themselves, it would look real. Certainly more real than the PT. And there are enough actors out there who can do pretty good impersonations of the OT cast that it would be hard for people to tell the difference. I think Lucas should hire these guys, and get some really good script writers, and continue the series after ROTJ using their animation combined with some of the CGI animation from "The Clone Wars" that we just saw in that new trailer. Then all Lucas has to do is sit back and produce, and slap his name on them, and release them as a weekly TV series. and I think people would really love them, some may even love them more than his stuff.

Due more to a lack of CGI digital effects back in the early 80's, the landscape of the Original Trilogy was almost barren and lifeless compared to the new films. This is precisely why every character stood out so much more, even a lowly bounty hunter like IG-88. Because there was so little visually, any time we saw a puppet or man in suit, it had resonance. Like any smaller budget film, the Original Trilogy relied more on its characters to carry the films. And there was also that impending doom of an Empire at the height of its powers that gave an aura of foreboding to every scene. On the other hand, Mace Windu's world. made in the era of CGI digital effects blasted our senses with visuals and sounds undreamed of in the Original Trilogy. With so much movement and color and detail and people, individual elements or characters stood out less than they did in the 80's. The Prequel films were more about the world of the Old Republic than about the characters. And in cinema, character is always more interesting than environment. In addition, particularly beginning with Phantom Menace, it was a time of relative peace in the galaxy. The Empire was not yet formed (but we all knew it would be), but there just wasn't that constant foreboding in the air, things were a little more mixed up, there was no clear dilineation of who was bad and who was good. As I said, the Prequel films were much more about that world than it was about the characters. Although in ROTS, we begin to see this world crumble, and the drama of the characters begins to take forefront, bringing us into the bleak landscape of the Original Trilogy...

I'll bet a month's salary that the History Channel special tonight scantly mentions the gigantic influence Akira Kurosawa or his 1958 film "Hidden Fortress" had on Star Wars: New Hope. In my estimation, Lucas owes about 65% of Star Wars to Kurosawa. I bet the subject gets about a minute or two of airtime before we move onto the rest of the program about Arthurian legends, Greek mythology, Joseph Campbell, and Flash Gordon. Kurosawa gets no props, watch...

Could be better than the prequels, thought that isn't too hard. I'd love it if George Lucas would let other directors continue Star Wars movies, ones who grew up and were influenced by Star Wars. I think we'd see some badass flicks.

Give me more KotOR material, otherwise I don't care. The whole story encapsulated in the movies bores me. The Old Republic 4000 years earlier is vastly more interesting to me: The Exile. Revan. HK-47. Mandalorians. Malachor IV. Korriban. The Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. Sentinels. All these things are vastly more interesting than anything in the movies, except maybe Han Solo (who's at least as interesting as his sort-of analog Atton Rand). Let's face facts: Lucas is (AFAIK) a god for coming up with the central conceit for the SW universe, but otherwise he is complete and utter shit at telling the story. When it gets handed off to the sexy people at BioWare and Obsidian, they turn SW into something legendary. Speaking of which, for the love of mercy hurry the hell up with KOTOR III. PS google "team gizka" sometime for some progress on KOTOR II.

The Clone Wars makers kinda hinted at C4 that we may see the EMPIRE line-up of bounty hunters in the new Clone Wars 3-D animated series. Unless I misinterpreted that, but I don't think I did.

Akira Kurosawa, "Hidden Fortress", and Japanese traditions got almost zero recognition during last night's "documentary", probably the most over-analyzing thing I've seen since the last Star Wars history special. "Star Wars" was basically Kurosawa's 1958 samrai film "Hidden Fortress" mashed with a father/son story. In "Fortress", the main character who goes through changes is the Princess, but add in a young man, someone whom the young male demographic can relate with (kind of like the young samurai apprentice from Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai"), transcribe the whole thing to a galxy far, far away, and you have "Star Wars." "Greek mythology" and "Homerican epics", huh? Please....

Cliffhangers can be many things, and the godfather is not an action movie like the SW movies are. Still, the young vito fleeing from Sicily, and DeNiro-Vito avenging his father’s killer (once again in Sicily) are both scenes where vito is in mortal peril. By your reasoning, these scenes are ”false” cliffhangers and devoid of drama, danger or tension. But there are lots of other examples of cliffhanger action movies where the outcome is more or less sett hat work. You know Indiana Jones and the temple of doom is set a full year before Raiders? Still works for me. And you know James Bond’ll always survive too. There are many ways to build drama while still knowing the protagonist will live to fight another day.

The problem with the prequels was that we had played out the events of the in our heads for 20 years. No film was ever going to match up to our imaginations. I wonder why Lucas changed his mind to have a different director do each episode? Spielberg and Milius both wanted to do one. Milius would have done an awesome ep III in the style of Conan The Barbarian. Whatever. I'd much rather sit through Phantom Menace than Pirates of the Shitibean or teen angst spider-man films.

This looks like it could be a good series, but I do think LFL is running the Clone Wars into the ground. For years we were all excited to finally see the Clone Wars, and now people are becoming sick of it. Or at least that era. Novels, comics, cartoons, even the end of Episode II and the beginning of Episode III. OK, we get it. Battle droids, clones, etc, etc. I wish GL wasn't so adverse to adapting a book or comic into a series. Even some of the various clone wars comics could be turned into a decent 30 minute cartoon.
But, aside from giving Boba Fett more focus in the prequels, GL seems to be against putting out something that people would really like to see. He'd rather give them what he wants 'em to see. I don't want him to take a poll and write whatever everyone wants, but even from a business sense. I think a series based on the Thrawn novels, for example, starring Han, Luke and Leia -- more beloved by more fans than prequel-folks -- in what is like a sequel to the original trilogy. They would be watched by more people than these Clone Wars things, I think. This may be one of GL's major issues though. Even though he doesn't mind commissioning hundreds of stories set after ROTJ, and accepting the vast amount of money they bring in, he likes to keep the idea in his head that ROTJ is the end of everything... -
See, the OT films were each about a missing; Star Wars: saving princess Leah then destroying the death star, Empire: escaping from Hoth and re-uniting, And Return: saving Han Solo, and again, destroying the death star.
The new trilogy were more concerned with ‘building the mythology’. Anyone who knows anything about story understands that mythology comes out of action, not the other way around.
The characters in the new movies had nothing to do –at least not anything interesting.
This series looks like more of the same shit. It also looks like I’m watching someone else play a really cool video game. Personally, I’m sick of Star Wars. What has it done for me lately?

I guess I did mean "Lucas' version of the Clone Wars", but that IS the Clone Wars now. But as someone who follows the majority of the CW comics and novel stories, all written by people other than Lucas, it's wearing thin. I don't know if I'll ever really get sick of Star Wars, but the reason I like the idea of adapting some existing novel or comic is you can take some of the most popular of those stories and present them on television to an audience who barely knows they exist. The quality of SOME of these stories had helped many of us be fans all this time. Why not give the movie fans a little taste of it? From a "creator" point of view, I guess I can see GL's wishes to be in complete control of what happens, but he also fails to recognize that what is usually considered the best of the films -- The Empire Strikes Back -- was directed by someone other than Lucas, with a screenplay written by someone other than Lucas. Give someone else a chance...

I agree with you about Empire, but I'll never forget listening to the DVD commentary for Empire, at the end, Lucas makes a point of mentioning that although many fans claim that Empire is the best, it did the weakest business of the OT. The implication being that if it was so great, then why didn't it make more money, etc. Just goes to show you how he thinks about these things.

So, he decided to throw in cute teddy bears, re-hash the Death Star, and make sure we got the happiest ending possible. And guess what? It WORKED. JEDI made more money than EMPIRE at a time when Lucas really, really needed to recover the money he'd sank into the sequels as well as his multi-million-dollar divorce. I prefer EMPIRE to JEDI like all eddicated folk, but I see his logic in the context of the time. I don't think Lucas considers what the film will do for YOU. He considers what it will do for HIM. And even a great artist would rather make money compromising his art than starve (or Lucas' equivalent...if he made a movie that wasn't as popular as JEDI was in 1983, he might have ended up in worse financial straits than his friend Francis. Lucas, of course, is not a great artist, but that's a different can of corn.

I agree with everything you've said. I'm not necessarily even faulting Lucas for his way of thinking, I just found his perspective interesting. Still, he did offer Jedi to Kirschner so he must of liked something he was doing, I wonder how different Jedi would have turned out or if Lucas would've still wound up steering it in the direction he did.

i'm sure thats a reason why it did better than empire, it was the last star wars movie so people wanted to see how it ended. and while box office success doesn't necessarily equal quality, it does show that many people saw the movie and if that many saw it and that often...then many people must like it you know?
