The Release Date for John Williams' New STAR WARS Score...

Published at:  Mar 22, 1999 12:14:40 AM CST

Maaaaaaaan, I am soooooo dying to get my hands on this music... Can you imagine if fully uses the tools at his disposal like.... a washerboard and an accordian? Bellydancer chimes? I'm kidding folks... this music I have impossibly high hopes for. If I'm not an utter wretched emotional wreck after listening to it... I'll pout for months... years... decades... and so on... I hope this story is dead on... cause that means its about 15 days closer than I had anticipated....

You'll forgive me if someone has already told you this. I haven't seen
it reported anywhere and it was news that I was dying to hear. Anyways,
I work for a music retailer in Canada and checking the list of release
dates, I noticed today that the Episode One soundtrack will be released
in Canada on May 4th!!!

I think that's far earlier than anyone was expecting! That means we are
scarcely a month away from hearing the first new Star Wars themes
recorded
in 16 years!

My God, think about that...5 weeks away from hearing those opening
strains
recorded anew...I'm going to pee my pants.

Call me Boba Fettuccini

    ...not really...

    by cmore

The last Star Wars themes came out a couple years ago on the Shadows of the Empire disc. While it may have not been John Williams, it was still Star Wars themes. And while it may be more like comparing the Droids cartoon to Star Wars the movie, I still enjoy it. Joel McNeely created a pretty cool theme for Xizor...and The Seduction of Princess Leia is worthy enough to find its place in a film. If Star Wars fans only live on the Trilogy soundtrack, they are missing a pleasant path lying between the two film series.

    Won't this ruin the movie?

    by john mclame

I for one cannot wait to get this soundtrack, but I'm afraid that not only will the chapter names on the CD ruin the movie's surprises, but the music itself will. John Williams illustrates every scene with his music. I'll get it when it comes out, but I'm only skimming through it until after the movie. (Master Yoda, give me the power to resist the tempation of listening to this soundtrack 1,000 times before the movie!)
    Arghh.... the anticipation!!

Don't EVER mention the word "EWOK" again!! It is the arch-enemy of everyone who is sane and decent! No other word strikes such terror in people - except possibly, L'AUTEUR!! I personally will be watching the movie before buying the soundtrack. AND, has anyone considered that the music might be a load of shit and not worth buying?

I agree with that earlier bloke, its a total pile of smeg that we have to wait 2 MONTHS! longer than the US to see Ep1.

Our actors, made in our contry, music by our phillamonic orchestra, blah blah

Not bloody fair. Its a shame we dont still rule the US really.

Also, why are you yanks so obsessed by our boring historical dramas! STOP IT! dont encourage them to make more for gods sakes! go watch Lock Stock and 2 Smoking barels please! or make some films about your own history!

oh i forget, your history is that of a country of religious nutters commiting genocide of the native indians and exploting african slaves...

    DWD: Say Hello To Harsh

    by dwdunphy

Why get all worked up over this soundtrack? Do you really want to prompt Debbie Allen to drag her Broadway cronies back to the Oscars to dance to the 'Jar Jar Rag'? I mean, MAN! MAN, OH MAN!! What were they thinking? Savion Glover tap dances all over 'Elizabeth', not to mention John Williams' 'Saving Private Ryan'? GRRRRR! Personally, I love soundtrack music and I was deeply offended by the Academy's stupidity in their treatment of these scores.

    John Williams...

    by blake petit

To Interloper: In answer to your question about whether any of us had considered that the score might not be worth buying, the answer is no. And the reason is very simple... JOHN WILLIAMS KICKS ASS!!!!! Even if George Lucas goes totally off his rocker and replaces the entire visual aspect of the film with scenes from "Barney's Big Adventure," John Williams' score will STILL kick ass! Come on here, people! Drag out your CDs of "Star Wars," "Superman" and "Jurassic Park." The music this man pieces together is INCREDIBLE. John Williams ROCKS! (Oh, and I agree about that stupid tap-dance routine during the Best Score presentation... next year I think I'll just look away from the screen and listen to the music.)

    John Williams can be lame

    by anamorphicrulez!

Did you ever hear that hack soundtrack to Lost World. It was lamer than the movie. It was some of the most uninspired crap I ever heard. It would of been better if he gave it to a true artist Danny Elfman to do. He should of just stuck with the Jurassic Park soundtrack. It was very disappointing. Like I always say support open DVD and demand anamorphic transfers. DIVX sux!!!!!!

John Williams should be the highest paid player in hollywood

    by l'auteur

He made Lucas and Spielberg. OK, JAWS was a great movie but it wouldnt have been as great (or great at all) without the shark theme. STAR WARS? Nothin' without the music. ditto for Indiana Jones. John Williams has a knack for making a movie a blockbuster. Why is that? Why arent there any composers like him? I think its because he composes themes...the shark theme...the ark theme...the force theme...han and leia theme...indy and marion theme...superman and lois theme...vader's theme. When one hears music in a movie that is completely associated with a character or presense, it enhances the emotion behind it. More composers should do this as oppsoed to simply trying to score each scene as a scene in itself. That way, there might be more great film operas after Williams passes on.

Hey! Don't make us come over there! Really, how many wars do we have to bail your asses out of before you realize your empire has been dead since about 1920. For that matter we kicked your asses twice--when Britain was at it's peak and America was a backwards farming nation, no less. I guess it's not too suprising, though--we fought for freedom, you fought for a swishy inbred monarch. As far as subjugation of indigenous people goes, I thought England pretty much wrote the entire book on that ( can we say "Irish"? how about "Scottish"? India perhaps? )
So you won't get to see TPM until 2 months later. That is probably because there is a far bigger audience over here. So tough titty--cry us a river and learn to live with it. Sheesh, if your attitude was any snottier and your country and it's military was any more impotent, I'd have guessed you were French....

Thank you Frank Rizzo for making the obligatory response to that British moron. I'm sure this crybaby is about 13 or 14 years old and doesn't realize the overbearing stupidity and irony of his/her comments. Don't worry, little venusXL, the soundtrack will make it over to your dreary little island almost as fast as you can say, "Shaka Zulu."

Ruin the movie? It might not even be the movie!

    by magic_al

Remember the original Star Wars album? It was full of concert arrangements and reordered cues, with the goal of making a good album being more important than merely presenting the movie's soundtrack as it would be with dialogue and sound effects removed. Another example is the original release of the Return of the Jedi soundtrack -- which was so small and full of concert arrangements and outakes that it contained surprisingly few cues that had actually appeared in the film. These are in stark contrast with the "Special Edition" release of the music, which tries to replicate the cueing of the movie soundtracks pretty closely. It depends how it's done. Personally I'd prefer to have both a "concert" performance released before the film, and a later release of the more-or-less unretouched film score.

    Response to Venus

    by achilles

Venus, Lucus is AMERICAN, Numbnuts. It is his baby. He puts up all the money for the bloody thing. It only makes sense that it would come to the US of A first. The only reason why he went to Britain to film is because it was cheaper. Think about it. LA would cost an arm and a leg and didn't have the right climate. San Francisco (which I'm sure he would prefer) does not have the facilities. Britain was a great compromise (as it was for the original trilogy). With the move to Oz for the next two films, he'll be able to save even more and put the savings into the F/X. Oh, and by the by, fellow readers, don't bother responding to JMS. He has been getting a charge out of writing anti-Star Wars rants in "Talk Back". He doesn't believe anything he says, he just likes to rile people up. I mean, come on! Check out the archives. The moronic stuff this guy writes is actually really funny. It's too scary to think that anybody is that stupid, so it must be a joke.

    Soundtrack in Denver

    by darthjoker

Hey guys. Just wanted to give you my take on this. Remember that the Star Wars Celebration is the weekend of April 29 through May 2. Fans attending the Celebration have been promised the first chance to buy EP1 merchandise. So, we have been assuming for awhile now that the EP1 soundtrack would be available that weekend. Therefore, this May 4 release date would make perfect sense. They make it available at the Celebration, then offer widespread release just a couple of days later.

    Final Fantasy

    by levendis

...really does have some of the most beautiful music. I was just thinking this morning how wonderful it would be to have all the old Final Fantasy songs played by a full orchestra -- just for posterity. Oh, which also brings to mind, I've been thinking about trying to transcribe some of the old videogame classics onto sheet music. Maybe put together a book? What would you guys think of that?

True, Final Fantasy does have good music, I put Nobuo Uematsu (I think I spelled it right) up there with the greats, Williams, Dave Arnold (I loved ID4's music), Elfman, et cetra. Most people overlook video games when they think of music. There have been a number of times when the music from the Final Fantasy games has been released, Celtic Moon was one that I remember from FF4 (2 in the US) and I heard fully orchestrated versions of FF7's "One Winged Angel", "Aerith's Theme" and "The Overworld" All were VERY impressive, and FF7's music probably wasn't Nobuo's best works. I hate to plug another site here, but www.rpgamer.com should have a listing of the CD's made based on his music, if not there are a number of online places to get the cd's.
And for people that say John Williams has passed his greatness, WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE SMOKING?!?! A LOT of movies wouldn't be what they are if it wasn't for him, and just because he had a few arguably "bad" works, look at the movies they were to? This is Star Wars we're talking about! It's part of what made Williams famous! He wouldn't allow himself to make a bad soundtrack for it. I feel sorry for all you people in europe and the like, and you English do make good points why you should get it first, but I'm going to be first on line for the CD's and the movie.

Yah but they probably can't sell it...

    by darth mall

Remember it is standard practice in the retail industry to send store copies of heavy demand item (I think this qualifys! ^_^) up to 2 weeks ahead of the actual street date. This is to insure that everyone will have it on the release date. If they sell it before the date they are subject to fines and such. And if you you add 14 days to the 4 you get the 18th.... the day before the theatrical release..... makes more sense now doesn't it?

    waterboy soundtrack

    by tech-donut

If you want an idea of what the new Star Wars score will sound like, get the Waterboy soundtrack. John Williams did the score for that movie and he said in an interview it was like a warm up session for Episode 1. Particularly good is cut 3, "Bobby Crushes a Man's Testicles". It's truly haunting, you feel like your a testicle...being crushed.
