A Look at Bruce Campbell's B&W Crime film... RUNNING TIME!

Published at:  Mar 22, 1999 12:09:30 AM CST

Maaaaan, I hope this is kickass in that CRISSCROSS, BORN TO KILL, CROSSFIRE, MURDER MY SWEET sorta way... Keep your fingers crossed guys and gals... Let's pray for THE BRUCE!!!!

Picture this, a feature length, black and white, crime drama shot in real
time, staring America's favorite bad ass, Bruce Campbell. For those who
aren't in the know, this isn't a fan boy's wet dream, it's a celluloid
reality. The film is called Running Time, and it was forewalled (This is
when the filmmaker buys daily showings himself), at the Santa Monica Lemle
about a year and a half ago. All I have to say is, the fact that this film
hasen't found a distributer is truly a crime. There hasen't been a decent
real time feature since Hitchcock's The Rope, and ever since, we've been
getting pretentous crap like Nick of Time. Running Time has the pontetial to
break new grounds if given a chance, that's why the world must know how
great this film is.

Good ol Bruce plays Carl, a thief who upon getting released from
prision embarks on the heist of a life time with his best friend, and three
other accomplises. The group runs afoul of many problems and obsticles on
the way to their destination. I don't want to give too much away because
there are tons of twists and turns that absolutely can't be spoiled. Whats
so great about this film is that the camera follows Bruce from beginning to
climax, as if it were a documentery with no cuts, (There are only11 cuts in
the entire film, all of which are hidden) and the entire cast goes through
the motions like consumate pros. Director Josh (Lunatics: A Love Story)
Becker should be lauded for this effort, (which was not accepted into
Sundance.....Bastards!) because it truly is a technical marvel that tells a
brilliant story.

For those of you who think that Bruce's talents are limited to comedy
and Horror, think again. This film showcases his maturity as an actor, just
as a A Simple Plan proved that Sam Raimi matured as a director. I may go as
far to say that this is the best performance of Bruce's entire career. Trust
me, It's that good. At this point the only way you can see this film is to
by a copy off of Josh Becker's web sight, (beckerfilms.com) hopfully this
will change.

There is only one distributer that has the balls to aquire a film like
this; I'm of course talking about Artisan Entertainment. After aquireing
offbeat films such as Pi and The Blair Witch Project, Running Time , I
garuntee, is a step in the right direction. To Artisan aquisitions execs, I
chllenge you to make yet another bold move and pick up Running Time, because
audiences around the world deserve to see it.

    Let's Hear It For BRUCE!!!!

...I don't care WHAT you Bruce-haters think... this man is talented. Sure, in most of his films he has a tongue-in-cheekiness to him... but so did Nicholson when he first started out....

    The Bruce

    by steve-dave

I can't wait for this one. One other thing to all the other die-hard Bruce Campbell fans out there, we need a label. You know, Star Trek has its "Trekkies" or "Trekkers" The Grateful Dead has their has their "Dead Heads" What about Bruce Campbell fans? I like "Evil Dead Heads." How about it fan boys?

Hail to the King or Come Get Some!

    by romanek

The concept of the camera being pretty much attached at the hip of Bruce, with no visible cuts, for the entire movie, is freakin groovy! I've always been intrigued by the idea of "one shot" movies. Though I've yet to see Rope, I have that Hitchcock-Truffaut book where Hitch explains how it was executed. I think Hitch was the first to eploit hidden cuts when darkness fills the frame (the effect runs rampant in films of the last 20 years). I still haven't been able to find Josh Becker's, Lunatics: A Love Story in any video store, but Becker did some Raimiesque Xena episodes, so I could see him pulling it off. Personally I'd love to see Sam and Bruce do Evil Dead installments until they're both in easywalkers, but they have both seperately proven their high drama abilities. Bruce was great and completely credible in a two-part Homicide a few years back. Don't movie execs realize the kind of cult following he has? The Deadites of the world will not stand for their neglect. They should hail to the king or eat some ol' double-barrel.

    Come Get Some

    by john shaft

Bruce is a god. He was the inspiration to Duke Nukem, is one of the coolest people alive. Why is it that when an original and clever film, that tries something different in a cool an exciting way gets ignored by the distributers, yet Brian Levant still has a career.

    More than 11 cuts

    by fennshysa

A friend and I saw this here in Knoxville at a University of Tennessee screening about six months ago... and while the concept and execution are good, there are a LOT more than 11 edits in the film... they're hidden well in zip-pans, quick dips to black from characters or sets, and the like, but I'd say the total is more around 30-40 edits...
Nitpicky, I know, but after a while it becomes easy to spot where they're hiding the cuts...
Still a pretty good film, tho....

This could be Bruce Campbell's time to shine, although without a major independent festival accepting this film into its auspices, I see it as becoming just another cult-favorite disappearing under the popular radar.

Seen it, it's cool, but it's short

    by fear of a ted

As a original member of "Bruce on a Stick" fan club (you get little paper cut-out dolls of Ash that you can attach chain-saws to and such), I was stoked when Bruce came to our school and premiered his movie a couple years ago. The movie is short however, at only 20-odd minutes, and feels rushed with a whole lotta exposition going on in a short amount o' time. Best hope to see it is through a film festival or maybe the Independent Channel. It would be great if he used this as a pre-cursor to a longer version (or re-used the character). Hey Ben- go Disney!

    1) cool! 2) with the digital revolution, i think there will be many more "films" that are one-take movies. this is because digital cameras do not need to be reloaded with film. they just go and go and go. 3) when are they gonna make a movie about DUKE NUKEM? that is only the greatest computer game ever and half of it was inspired by Campbell's performance in ARMY OF DARKNESS. needless to say, Campbell would have to star. Bruce kicks ass in ways they haven't even invented yet. The only reason Running Time hasn't been released to theaters is because their movie screens aren't worthy of holding the man's image. If I don't see a new Evil Dead film soon I may have to kill somebody.

I think Romanek said it best...."Deadites". Although some may say that's still too close to the Grateful Dead's legion of fans, its still cool.

    Med-Evil Dead

    by ayii

My buddy told me that they were originally going to call Army of Darkness "Med-Evil Dead", but the studio didn't feel that it was marketable.

Now if there is going to be a director's cut of Evil 3, it would be cool for them to use the name they had originally planned with the subtitle of 'Army of Darkness". Oh hell, I like the Army title as well.

The running time for "Running Time"

    by annie r.

The 20-odd running time quoted above is wrong. The film is actually right about 70 minutes long; short, but still feature-length. I bought my copy from www.beckerfilms.com several months ago, and I totally recommend it. It's not just a cool technical exercise, but a really involving and well-made little movie. I heard today Josh Becker made a deal with Anchor Bay for a video/DVD release, which is good news. Pick yourself up a copy. It's totally beyond me why Bruce Campbell isn't pulling down $20 million a picture, except when I take into account that the general public is incredibly stupid. Then it makes a little more sense. He's great in the film (not campy, either), as is pretty much everyone in the cast. Be the coolest person on your block--see this movie.

    "Running Time" gets distribution

    by smutgirl

I was asked today to pass on this special message from Josh Becker to every newsgroup, mailing list, and message forum I could think of- lo and behold, I seem to have come to the right place at the right time! --Shirley (and now over to Josh...)

    "I have finally made a U.S./Canada
video/DVD deal on 'Running Time' with Anchor Bay Entertainment, the same folks that just re-released 'Thou Shalt Not Kill . . . Except' and 'Evil Dead.' This will be available in September or October. Since this is a first-run release it will still not be cheap and there will be at least 10 to 20 thousand of them in their initial run. I still have 70 tapes left of the version that is being sold here on the internet. These will undoubtedly become collector's items since there are only 200 in existence. I will happily sign them for you. Get yours now, because when they're gone, that's
    it." --Josh

Bruce needs more dramatic movie roles

    by brando78

Bruce is great, no one can deny it. I'm sure everyone remembers his recent little appearence on the X-Files, but does anyone remember him on Homocide: Life on the Street? I wish I could find the tape I had those two episodes recorded on. I can't remember much, accept that he played a cop from another precinct - and that he was dramatically really good...
Anybody remember this? Also, anybody know where an ordinary guy like me can get a copy of Raimi's Within the Woods?
