John McTiernan lines up a new action film called RUN!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. John McTiernan (DIE HARD, PREDATOR) has a new actioneer in the works. It's called RUN and it'll star Karl Urban. The word is that this script has 100 pages of car chases. So, will it be CRANK via McTiernan?
The plot surrounds an Interpol agent who stumbles upon a fraud conspiracy while in pursuit of a murder suspect.
Thoughts?

directing the new Die Hard movie. This sounds good though. www.obsessedwithfilm.com

Is teledirecting replacing Woodshop?
-
McTiernan... car chases... I'll pay to see it.
-
This could not be helped.
-
And I'm not talking about his legal problems (phoenixmagi - I believe he was illegally listening in on his ex-wife's phone conversations, and then he lied to the FBI about it)I want to see the guy who made Die Hard back in action again. But, after Rollerball, I don't know if that's possible. Fuck me, that is an awful film.

"Prosecutors investigating illegal wiretapping by former private detective Anthony Pellicano charge film director John McTiernan with hiring detective to wiretap conversations of movie producer Charles Roven and lying about it to FBI agents."
Also, his ex-wife's suing him, as he also hired Pellicano to tap her phones as well.
McTiernan will be sentenced on July 21st.

WILL LOST'S 2HR FINALE TONIGHT GET A TALKBACK OR NOT????
dun duuunn DUUUUNNNNNNN!!!!!!!
teehee. Sorry, I just had to. Don't worry Herc & Mori, I completely understood and supported your touch decision last week. Pweease don't ban me from talkbacks because of this :D -
Great. They couldn't/wouldn't bring back McTiernan to do DIE HARD 4, but meanwhile he WILL be doing some OTHER action flick. *sigh*
-
...after the lame ducks he chose lately. Say whatever you want about Karl, but he's got a great face for action. He just needs a good director to point him in the right...ehm...direction. Hope ol' John's up for the task with all this legal shit flying around.
-
Now THEN we would know Hollywood has gone over the edge on the prequel craze!
-
Or whatever it is called.
-
also i agree, McTiernan should have directed DH4 but ... wasn't he facing jail time or something?
-
now that's a book they don't adapt for the screen often enough.
-
McTiernan just fucking owns that franchise. OWNS it. The one time he didn't direct was the weakest flick in the series (so far). Please God don't let LFODH suck! PLEEEEEASE!!
-
either way, if McTiernan told me he was grooming Barbara Walters as an action star, I'd say OK.it's John McTiernan!
-
I respect him even more now. BTW, The Hunt for Red October is his best movie.
-
sounds good for McT. Maybe he learns somehting for his real life problems. I think he still has some great movies inside. I doubt that about Urban.
-
He can really use a hit. It's like he's been cursed ever since Last Action Hero. Basic was nearly the definition of "meh". I remember paying to see it just can't remember the movie all that much. As for Rollerball.. it's one of only two movies I've ever walked out on. The Stupids was the other btw. Here's to McTiernan making a good action film that doesn't rely on quick cut edits and a shaky cam.
-
Or whatever it is called.
(if Hollywood remakes, me too) -
If only...
-
I think Die Hard 2 proved that. He's made some crap recently but this is the guy that made Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt For Red October and Die Hard With A Vengeance. That's one hell of a track record. Hell I even enjoy 13th Warrior (especially the brilliant Goldsmith score).
-
This kind of amusing to me as I've been toying with a script for a couple of years now that is essentially one long chase/action sequence after another. A unapologetic popcorn flick with an intentionally flimsy plot that's merely there as a set up for the non-stop action. I even called it "Run" at one point, but decided to change it because of the Patrick Dempsey movie of the same name. Must be another one of those "tapping into the cultural zeitgeist" things.
-
OKay, "Run" does not to be remade. It wasn't even that good in 1991. I don't think anyone else can top Patrick Dempsey's performance. This is sarcasm for those of you without a sense of humor.
-
Watch the John Rambo trailer and his balls will instantly grow back and he might, just might make a great action film again.
-
Just look at the *if it bleeds..* making of predator doc on the two disk dvd.You get to see John , directing at the time , and then interviewed recently. It illustrates horribly , what twenty years can do to peaple ..The guy looks like Walter Mathau after a stroke .It's the same passage of time that's blunted the skills of Ridley Scott and gave us Georges Star wars prequels .
-
in the late 80s. After that came the decline.Nevertheless, I'm curious about this one.
-
It's in the Book of Revelations!!! Sorry all goodwill from Predator, Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Thomas Crown Affair has been sucked from me by Rollerball, The 13th Warrior and The Last Action Hero. He's good but can also get terribly bloated and boring!
-
Which is a shame, because him and James Cameron were the Twin Towers of Action as far as I was concerned. With McTiernan churning out ever worse films and Cameron hiding at the bottom of the ocean for ten years, that's left the Michael Bay sensibility to ruin our films with incoherent action and too much CGI.With Cameron finally coming uo for air, though, maybe McTiernan will be inspired to go back to the classic style that worked so well in Die Hard, Predator, and The Hunt For Red October. That would pretty nice, I think.
-
Goddamnit, this is the most buggy site on the entire internet. Error message, blank pages, those front page headlines that appear and disappear at will. I love it here, but it does test my patience at times.Harry et al - I know you're all busy taking calls from Robert Rodriguez and whatnot, but can't you, I don't know, fix this damn place or something? That would almost be as nice as having Cameron and McTiernan back making fuck off action films.
-
I thought he was in some sort of legal trouble.
-
Even if he hasn't exactly been pumping out celluloid gold, I'd take a shitty McTiernan directed Die Hard rather than a shitty Wiseman directed Die Hard any day.
-
Let the the prison jokes commence!
-
I mean, you just don't get much better than the original 1991 Dempsey vehicle... =)
-
Damn you, transporter of beasts.
-
McTiernan had a return to form. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. John is just as guilty of incoherent action as Snr. Bay. Maybe it's not as blatant but just look at the action editing in Die Hard with a Vengance! It's all kinds of messed up. But still, dudes done some great films. Heck, I even enjoyed Basic for how absolutely ridiculous it was...I certainly wasn't bored, that's for sure. So, here's hoping for a true comeback for John Mc'f*cking'Tiernan (as Bruce might call him).
-
If so, why'd they take her name out of the title?
-
Called Run:Strech First.
I enjoyed the 1991 movie. -
i WISH he did live free or die hard
-
wasn't it mctiernan who got arrested for trying to get undercover cops to pay him for sex while he was dressed as a woman? someone's gotta know what i'm talking about. it was in the news a couple of years ago. could have sworn it was this dude.
-
before that I can't remember a straight up action film I enjoyed. It's been forever. Every once in a while you need a shot of adrenaline and unfortunately most films aren't satisfying in that regard.
-
That was Lee Tamahori, PotSmokinAlien. The guy who did XXX2, that fucking awful Bond film with the invisible car, and Next. He had a decent run in the nineties (especially The Edge, I liked that one - Anthony Hopkins fights a bear!), but he's your standard-issue hack these days. Well, except for the cross-dressing stuff. I don't think that's standard-issue for journeyman directors, but who knows?
-
lots of parkour in it. It created one of the most memorable chase scenes in Casino Royale and it was fun to watch in District 13. However Karl Urban doesn't do Parkour. So it'd be nice to recast him with someone that does. But maybe the movie just isn't built around it. If not then it should...dammit.
-
and maybe he'll be able to direct another good movie now.
-
Aside from The Thomas Crown Affair and (to a lesser extent) The 13th Warrior, McTiernan hasn't made a great movie since The Hunt For Red October.
-
DeBont is doing a John Cusack movie that's supposed to have a 51 minute chase. Okay gentlemen, let's take the gloves off. Both of you (one more than the other) have past glories to live up to and recent transgressions to overcome. You oughta be some hungry motherfuckers desperate to prove yourselves.
You may go below the belt, you may bite, you may gouge. There is only one rule: FOR GOD'S SAKE don't try to pull some CRANK or Tony Scott or Michael Bay type shit... I don't care what Quint says. If Quint directed a sequel to the remake of ROLLERBALL would you do it too? I hope not.
My money is on McTiernan over DeBont. An obvious choice, but jesus man... ROLLERBALL. I know it's been said before, but it's true.
Please don't tint this one green, McTiernan. -
Forget BOND, McT was once gonna direct TERMINATOR 3 so the new owners should get real "old school" filmmakers to do the next few TERMINATORS. Have Paul Verhoeven do one too but give McTiernan T4!
-
Vern, John McTiernan is the better filmmker and should deliver a better product...or should I say he better deliver one helleva chase film or he will be considered a hack. Jim Cameron still delivers to this day so why not McT. John, if you're reading this, direct T4 McT style....but with Governor Schwarzenegger. The PREDATOR team is back!
-
I dunno. I'd personally would like to see him mix up the car stuff with some badass shootouts and fights like the old days. I did like the car chase stuff in Die Hard 3 though so hopefully it'll be like that. Also note to McT:MAKE IT R-RATED!
-
I thought he died a while back though.Serously, I thought I read "Die Hard director dies" huh.My main question is and i'll go bold WHY THE FUCK ISN'T HE DOING THE NEXT PUNISHER FILM? IF JOHN MCTIERNAN IS LOOKING FOR A NEW ACTION PROJECT THEN WHY LIONSGATE? WHY CAN'T WE GET PUNISHER:WAR JOURNAL,STARRING TOM JANE AND MICKEY ROURKE (AS JIGSAW) WRITTEN BY WALTER HILL DIRECTED BY JOHN MCTIERNAN? MY GOD WHY NOT?
-
Good idea liljuniorbrown. That movie would rule.
-
Hmmm. Doesn't have the same ring to it.
-
Run 3: Run With a Vengeance
Run 4: Run With a Wedgie -
I'm happy to hear him finally attached to something. There have been many years of rumors on the net. Like I said above, McTiernan is a great director. The thing that people in Hollywood keep forgetting is, great directors need great scripts. Look at his classics, than look at his flops. The scripts have played a major role.
-
...with a Shane Black script. Burt Reynolds should do the stunts (as 'Hooper').
-
And will take place entirely in a restroom stall. Like "Phone Booth," but smellier.
-
just a bunch of car chases. In fact, there is more non-car action than car action in it. And, CRANK is one of the best action flicks ever made.
-
Speed was ok, but the last 30 mins sucked. And Keanu and Sandra were both irritating as hell. Speed 2 was just about the worst movie i've ever seen in my life. Either that or The Haunting. What good films has he made?
-
Check it out.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDs0KyyYIwc
-
i'm sorry. i just can't get excited about anything this guy does anymore. he totally ruined Die Hard with a Vengeance and everything hes done since the early 90's. is it so hard to keep a camera still?
-
who kills the corrupt bad guys with a fake rabbit and drives off in a convertible while the music of kenny loggins blares out. you gotta run! do-do-do-de-do, ooohhhh yeeeeah-yeah-ye-yeah-eee-yeah! you gotta RUN
-
sneaky.
-
You win this thread.
-
He invented that kind of movie with DEATH WISH.
-
if you suffer from ADD. I truly think that attention spans have shrunk over the years. I watched The Exorcist recently and I think a majority of the youth audience, would be bored silly by that movie today. There's got to be a shock "gotcha" in the first 10 minutes.
-
....your last movie starred the acting legend that is Chris Klein, and now you get Karl Urban. He looks good in a helmut. Thats about it. No wait, loved his emoting in "Doom".
-
Wasn't he supposed to serve time or something for lying to the FBI?
-
John McTiernan blew his chances to do Live Free or Die Hard by lying to the FBI and getting tied up in a huge court case. Supposedly he was the first one they went to with the film, but when it became a distinct possibility that he was going to see time in the clink for awhile, they looked elsewhere for someone who didn't have a chance of getting sentenced during production. Kind of like Ed Furlong with Terminator 3. Most people don't know that they DID try to get Furlong back for Terminator 3. Thing is, they told him he needed to stop the drug shit and quit getting arrested. He didn't listen and lost the role to Nick Stahl. It's McTiernan's fault and no one else's that he didn't get to direct Die Hard 4.
-
once he announced that he committed perjury. which is an offense punishable by a very legthy jail sentence. and anyway AINC fox fall is so big that harry will never be able to forgive him for rollerball.McTiernans career is RIP.
-
its called a lie dectector. or an electronic tag.
-
because he is too old. Some directors minds just lose all edge and taste with age. Look at Coppola, do you honestly think he could come up with something like Apocolypse Now these days.Directors like Speilberg still feel young and fresh, look at Munich or Minority Report, he is still always pushing boundries. It happens with actors as well. Look at De Niro. It's not that he picks really bad films but why can't he do something like Taxi Driver?
-
I think Karl Urban could carry a Predator film. He's got better acting chops than Arnold, plus his face is in a permanent scowl so why not?
-
is now moving away from the box office. If a film like The Godfather, The Graduate or Taxi Driver came out today they would be considered indie films. They would not be released in maby cinemas or seen by many people. In the 70's they where the big box office draws. The classic directors and actors are still trying to stay in the box office instead of making interesting films, it's not like they are money hungry it's just that they never had to look for interesting roles because interesting roles where always in mainstream films. Now you have to find smaller films to get the kind of roles that would get you noticed.
-
Hmmmmm - that would be an interesting reality tv show. McTiernan did DIE HARD which is an instant advantage though DeBont has some hand in that for the look of the thing - which is hugely effective. And McTiernan has never been a snivelling apologist - DeBont did go all trembly lip after 'The Haunting' by stating they only had rights to film the novel and not remake the Wiseman film and did start blaming that - I have never read 'The Haunting' so don't know if there was a scene in the book where Wolverine jumps from a painting and where Owen Wilson gets decapitated by one of those fireplace lions that were so popular back in the day. DeBont also had a SPEED sequel based on one of the slowest modes of transportation known to man. So far it looks like McTiernan all the way. Predator, Thomas Crown Affair, Hunt 'Today we shail into hishtory' for Red October, Die Hard, Die Hard III Die Hardererer against Speed. Also Nomads is pretty cool in a early film. McTiernan also looks pretty fucking tough and DeBont is Dutch! But ROLLERBALL - the only film that makes Smokey and the Bandit III: Smokey is the Bandit seem exciting! Tough call!
-
De Bont and "Twister". It ain't no classic, but the weather effects were cool, and c'mon.. a flying cow.
-
Some people just hit a point, and ...blah. (Brian DePalma) They aren't creative anymore. Some can keep on giving and getting better (Ridley Scott). Which of these is McTiernan?
-
nuff' said.
-
Run starring Patrick Dempsey before I did. That's insane. McTiernan to direct "Loverboy 2"
where patrick gives kirsty allen a fatal std and he's got to get her to a hospital before Morgan Freeman makes a speech about it. -
now that's what I wanna see. I honestly think the Rock could be the next "true" action star (if he even wants to be) in the mold of Ahnold, Stallone, or Walter B, but thus far really hasn't found the right director and/or script to make him a total badass. Although I admit that The Rundown was pretty awesome and as close as he's gotten to the glory days of the aforementioned actors on the action film Mt. Rushmore. Anybody else feel the same way?
-
It's possible if the fates and stars aligned, that the above mentioned teamup, if it happened, would create the MAN MOVIE OF MAN MOVIES! It would be sweet. But who will write this dream project?
-
I think some directors lose something when the budgets they work with gets to big. I think this happened to McTiernan. I'm glad to hear that this budget is 30 million. That's small by Hollywood terms but still enough to get things done. A smaller budget forces everyone to be focused and brings out their creativity. I'm a huge fan of Sam Raimi also.
I've followed his career since the begining. I was very happy to see him get some long over due mainstream recognition with the "Spiderman" films. The budgets on those films are crazy. On one level, he gets to play with toys he couldn't afford in the past. But in playing the game with the studio, he has to jump through hoops to please Sony and they kind of have him on a leash. If you've seen him in any interviews in the last few years, it look like "the joy" has left his eyes. Like a lot of people on this site, I also feel he should move on from "Spiderman". He did great work on the films but it seems like he's getting burnt out. I believe if he went back to his roots and did something for a few million, he would get excited again. Peter Jackson is talking about doing this soon. Look at John Woo,"Hard Boiled" cost 5million. Now his budgets are in the 70 to 90 range. When studios pay that kind of money, they usually want to play it safe. That's a major reason why he can't kill as many people on screen here. He plays ball and in the process, it's no longer a "John Woo" film. -
Fuck Michael Winner.
-
will he return in the lead? He's a hotter draw than he was when the original came out.
-
Since we're assuming McTiernen can capture his former glory, why not see if Shane Black or John Milius can do the same?
-
I wish this movie was a reality.
-
I put that movie on a short list of films that will make me stop channel surfing if I come accross it. (Coincidentally, The Hunt for Red October is also on that list).
