John McTiernan lines up a new action film called RUN!!

Published at:  May 23, 2007 1:56:42 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. John McTiernan (DIE HARD, PREDATOR) has a new actioneer in the works. It's called RUN and it'll star Karl Urban. The word is that this script has 100 pages of car chases. So, will it be CRANK via McTiernan?

The plot surrounds an Interpol agent who stumbles upon a fraud conspiracy while in pursuit of a murder suspect.

Thoughts?

And I'm not talking about his legal problems (phoenixmagi - I believe he was illegally listening in on his ex-wife's phone conversations, and then he lied to the FBI about it)I want to see the guy who made Die Hard back in action again. But, after Rollerball, I don't know if that's possible. Fuck me, that is an awful film.

Also, his ex-wife's suing him, as he also hired Pellicano to tap her phones as well.

He can really use a hit. It's like he's been cursed ever since Last Action Hero. Basic was nearly the definition of "meh". I remember paying to see it just can't remember the movie all that much. As for Rollerball.. it's one of only two movies I've ever walked out on. The Stupids was the other btw. Here's to McTiernan making a good action film that doesn't rely on quick cut edits and a shaky cam.

    by dominic-vobiscum

This kind of amusing to me as I've been toying with a script for a couple of years now that is essentially one long chase/action sequence after another. A unapologetic popcorn flick with an intentionally flimsy plot that's merely there as a set up for the non-stop action. I even called it "Run" at one point, but decided to change it because of the Patrick Dempsey movie of the same name. Must be another one of those "tapping into the cultural zeitgeist" things.

    by franklin t marmoset

Which is a shame, because him and James Cameron were the Twin Towers of Action as far as I was concerned. With McTiernan churning out ever worse films and Cameron hiding at the bottom of the ocean for ten years, that's left the Michael Bay sensibility to ruin our films with incoherent action and too much CGI.With Cameron finally coming uo for air, though, maybe McTiernan will be inspired to go back to the classic style that worked so well in Die Hard, Predator, and The Hunt For Red October. That would pretty nice, I think.

McTiernan had a return to form. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. John is just as guilty of incoherent action as Snr. Bay. Maybe it's not as blatant but just look at the action editing in Die Hard with a Vengance! It's all kinds of messed up. But still, dudes done some great films. Heck, I even enjoyed Basic for how absolutely ridiculous it was...I certainly wasn't bored, that's for sure. So, here's hoping for a true comeback for John Mc'f*cking'Tiernan (as Bruce might call him).

lots of parkour in it. It created one of the most memorable chase scenes in Casino Royale and it was fun to watch in District 13. However Karl Urban doesn't do Parkour. DeBont vs. McTiernan

    by vern

DeBont is doing a John Cusack movie that's supposed to have a 51 minute chase. Okay gentlemen, let's take the gloves off. Both of you (one more than the other) have past glories to live up to and recent transgressions to overcome. You oughta be some hungry motherfuckers desperate to prove yourselves.
You may go below the belt, you may bite, you may gouge. There is only one rule: FOR GOD'S SAKE don't try to pull some CRANK or Tony Scott or Michael Bay type shit... I don't care what Quint says. If Quint directed a sequel to the remake of ROLLERBALL would you do it too? I hope not.
My money is on McTiernan over DeBont. An obvious choice, but jesus man... ROLLERBALL. I know it's been said before, but it's true.
Please don't tint this one green, McTiernan.

McTiernan screwed up his chances to direct Die Hard 4

    by boromir187

John McTiernan blew his chances to do Live Free or Die Hard by lying to the FBI and getting tied up in a huge court case. Supposedly he was the first one they went to with the film, but when it became a distinct possibility that he was going to see time in the clink for awhile, they looked elsewhere for someone who didn't have a chance of getting sentenced during production. Kind of like Ed Furlong with Terminator 3. Most people don't know that they DID try to get Furlong back for Terminator 3. Thing is, they told him he needed to stop the drug shit and quit getting arrested. He didn't listen and lost the role to Nick Stahl. It's McTiernan's fault and no one else's that he didn't get to direct Die Hard 4.

    by pjdon

because he is too old. Some directors minds just lose all edge and taste with age. Look at Coppola, do you honestly think he could come up with something like Apocolypse Now these days.Directors like Speilberg still feel young and fresh, look at Munich or Minority Report, he is still always pushing boundries. It happens with actors as well. Look at De Niro. It's not that he picks really bad films but why can't he do something like Taxi Driver?

I think it is because what is considered good

    by pjdon

is now moving away from the box office. If a film like The Godfather, The Graduate or Taxi Driver came out today they would be considered indie films. They would not be released in maby cinemas or seen by many people. In the 70's they where the big box office draws. The classic directors and actors are still trying to stay in the box office instead of making interesting films, it's not like they are money hungry it's just that they never had to look for interesting roles because interesting roles where always in mainstream films. Now you have to find smaller films to get the kind of roles that would get you noticed.

    THE DEBONT / MCTIERNAN CHALLENGE

    by samson_k

Hmmmmm - that would be an interesting reality tv show. McTiernan did DIE HARD which is an instant advantage though DeBont has some hand in that for the look of the thing - which is hugely effective. And McTiernan has never been a snivelling apologist - DeBont did go all trembly lip after 'The Haunting' by stating they only had rights to film the novel and not remake the Wiseman film and did start blaming that - I have never read 'The Haunting' so don't know if there was a scene in the book where Wolverine jumps from a painting and where Owen Wilson gets decapitated by one of those fireplace lions that were so popular back in the day. DeBont also had a SPEED sequel based on one of the slowest modes of transportation known to man. So far it looks like McTiernan all the way. Predator, Thomas Crown Affair, Hunt 'Today we shail into hishtory' for Red October, Die Hard, Die Hard III Die Hardererer against Speed. Also Nomads is pretty cool in a early film. McTiernan also looks pretty fucking tough and DeBont is Dutch! But ROLLERBALL - the only film that makes Smokey and the Bandit III: Smokey is the Bandit seem exciting! Tough call!

    Past his prime?

    by krushjudgement

Some people just hit a point, and ...blah. (Brian DePalma) They aren't creative anymore. Some can keep on giving and getting better (Ridley Scott). Which of these is McTiernan?

    I cant believe someone referenced

    by misnomer

Run starring Patrick Dempsey before I did. That's insane. McTiernan to direct "Loverboy 2"
where patrick gives kirsty allen a fatal std and he's got to get her to a hospital before Morgan Freeman makes a speech about it.

    McTiernan & The Rock....

    by trav

now that's what I wanna see. I honestly think the Rock could be the next "true" action star (if he even wants to be) in the mold of Ahnold, Stallone, or Walter B, but thus far really hasn't found the right director and/or script to make him a total badass. Although I admit that The Rundown was pretty awesome and as close as he's gotten to the glory days of the aforementioned actors on the action film Mt. Rushmore. Anybody else feel the same way?

It's possible if the fates and stars aligned, that the above mentioned teamup, if it happened, would create the MAN MOVIE OF MAN MOVIES! It would be sweet. But who will write this dream project?

    Budgets

    by munro kelly

I think some directors lose something when the budgets they work with gets to big. I think this happened to McTiernan. I'm glad to hear that this budget is 30 million. That's small by Hollywood terms but still enough to get things done. A smaller budget forces everyone to be focused and brings out their creativity. I'm a huge fan of Sam Raimi also.
I've followed his career since the begining. I was very happy to see him get some long over due mainstream recognition with the "Spiderman" films. The budgets on those films are crazy. On one level, he gets to play with toys he couldn't afford in the past. But in playing the game with the studio, he has to jump through hoops to please Sony and they kind of have him on a leash. If you've seen him in any interviews in the last few years, it look like "the joy" has left his eyes. Like a lot of people on this site, I also feel he should move on from "Spiderman". He did great work on the films but it seems like he's getting burnt out. I believe if he went back to his roots and did something for a few million, he would get excited again. Peter Jackson is talking about doing this soon. Look at John Woo,"Hard Boiled" cost 5million. Now his budgets are in the 70 to 90 range. When studios pay that kind of money, they usually want to play it safe. That's a major reason why he can't kill as many people on screen here. He plays ball and in the process, it's no longer a "John Woo" film.

    Patrick Dempsey?

    by indiephantom

will he return in the lead? He's a hotter draw than he was when the original came out.

Since we're assuming McTiernen can capture his former glory, why not see if Shane Black or John Milius can do the same?

Mark me down for really digging The 13th Warrior

    by movietool

I put that movie on a short list of films that will make me stop channel surfing if I come accross it. (Coincidentally, The Hunt for Red October is also on that list).
