De Niro and Pacino together again? In a cat and mouse serial killer flick!?!?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Count me excited about this one. Definitely...
I love me a good cat and mouse movie and this one sounds great.
Jon Avnet is producing a flick called RIGHTEOUS KILL with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino playing NY detectives both hunting a serial killer. Russell Gerwitz (INSIDE MAN) wrote the script and the movie is being funded independently.
Great, great news, especially since they're assuring the public that Pacino and De Niro share the screen for most of the movie, unlike their other pairings which have either resulted in no shared scenes or a single sequence (HEAT).
I loved INSIDE MAN and I want Pacino and De Niro to be awesome again. I have high hopes for the project.

They took fairly stellar casts and crews, somewhat promising concepts, and turned them into dog shit. Wicker Man, Black Dhalia, 16 Blocks, all almost unwatchably bad. I'm not exagerating for effect either. Really appaling, cheap, tatty flicks. I got a suspicion they are laundering drug money or something. I don't know how else to explain such discrepency between talent, budget and the end product. Maybe they are shooting to be the new Cannon.

Watched scarface again the other day, pacino at his finest. to be honest both pacinoa and deniro have been doing films of late that havent been on par with their obvious talents. I'm hoping the scipt is top notch and it does them justice.

Actually, they never appear together in Heat. Watch it again, it may look like they're in the same scenes, like the restaurant bit about halfway through, and the climax, but it's just body doubles and clever editing. You don't see both the actor's faces from the front at any time. Ditto for Scarface (De Niro appears in heavy makeup at the end, he's the guy who shoots Tony Montana with a shotgun from behind).

I hope this is good...not DeNiro and Pacino trying to live up to yesteryear. Heat was brilliant. Their 5 mins together on screen is cinema at its finest. No need to put them together unless this project out does Heat. In My opinion, Michael Mann understood the DeNiro/Pacino dynamics best. No need for a hack to try to reproduce test tube babies. Nuff said.

Who told De Niro he could act anyway? He's rubbish. He is like a plank of wood. He only had one good movie abd that was Taxi Driver. Everything else has been a blank piece of wood. De Niro cant act!! And Pacino?! Haaaaaaaaam. So will i pay to see a plank of wood emote with a piece of Haaaaaaaam? No. Blane Hoolyweird. Their criteria for what makes a good actor seems to be different from everywhere else.

The director and producers of 88 Minutes, one of the biggest crap I've seen this year. I know Al Pacino play in movies those last years only to pay his taxes. De Niro too. And they reunite ? No fucking surprise !

I know I shouldn't really react to that, but...De Niro in Godfather II? Raging Bull? Goodfellas? The Deer Hunter? The Mission? And so the list goes on. I agree that Pacino has got frighteningly hammy in his old age (Devil's Advocate...uhhh), but for Godfather I and II, he is untouchable.

Agreed that movie choices for both have dropped in quality a lot. Pacino's last truly great performance was in Insomnia while I cant even recall DeNiro's last good movie choice. But they still kick ass and are tons better than the crap emo actors we have today.
Only a handful of current actors have the talent which these two had in thier prime. It pisses me off no end to see ppl comparing pretty boy wusses like DiCaprio in The Departed to Brando/Pacino/Deniro. -
If it was 10 or 20 years ago. But both of those guys used to be two of the greatest actors anywhere ever, whose carreers have just massively high-dived. Seriously - Pacino. Was. In. Gigli. And De Niro? Shark Tale, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Hide and Seek, Godsend, Showtime. It seems like they both realise they're on the way out and they need to give each other a boost, so they're going back to back so that ten buhjillion people go "i love heat! i'm paying money to see this".

It would be good to see Jack in this but I have a feeling that this will be more like The Score rather than Heat.. Bring in a better director and we may have something special.. Mann would be obvious and credible but how about a Pacino and Scorcese pairing.. A fairytale that needs to be told!!!

You are one fucked up individual ma' boy. Pacino is arguably the finest actor of his generation. DeNiro – while falling into the comedy trap and the shit that inevitably follows has dropped in the last decade or so – is also one of the finest actors in the last 20-30 years.

Just type in "Wicker Man Comedy" into Youtube and by the mere act of editing together the silliest sequences into 2 or so minutes, it's much more entertaining.

Those same make up guys did a great job making De Niro look like a naked Ellen Barkin for the Sea Of Love sex scenes. And who can forget their memorable scenes together in Serpico? De Niro was heavily made up as Pacino's beard in that one.

De Niro's character always got away form doing bad stuff. He does one good deed ( killing Waynegrow )and he pays for it with his life. A small victory for Pacino's character who's step-daughter just tried to kill herself, his wife gets around, and he couldn't find any trace of Kilmer of De Niro's characters after they got a tip handed to them. I always wanted an extended ending to Heat where Pacino's character finds out De Niro just iced a serial killer who gave Pacino's character more grief then the heists he was trying to solve and show him feel like shit cause he killed a guy who actually did something no one else could. If they had different lives they coudl have been friends. What a depressing ending on both camps.

in a buddy cop film. But done Bad Lieutenant style. The film would end in flames. Sonny patience would very thin with Travis. I could watch a whole movie of them just driving in a car all day like cops do. All the while making comments of the ongoings in the area. That's a nice 80 minute film there.
Or they could play the two devils.His Louis and Al's John. It could be like Oh God You Devil. But instead it could be called Oh Devil You Devil and they play the same devil two different emotions. GIVE ME A DEAL! -

That was the worst movie I saw whatever summer it came out.Horrible plot that made no sense, characters who in no way reacted to each other, no tension, obvious twists, bad directorial style, wacky humour about Albanians, endless irrelevant subplots, pointless 'Crash' moments about racial tensions in the big city etc. etc. etc.I can't think of a thriller that makes more mistakes and deflates its own potential more at every turn. Inside Man was beyond terrible.

You have arguably the two best living actors in a movie together where they will share enough screentime. Great. But if something else doesn't go right, then it'll seem like a wasted opportunity. But Inside Man was great so that is a good sign. I can't imagine not seeing this on opening day. I hope the serial killer isn't just some dude.
I definitely prefer Pacino over DeNiro, but anyone who has anything negative to say about the acting ability of either of these two has to be their own cousin.

ahhh pacino....as the years go by his acting becomes more and more over the top. I blame it on the movie "Scent of a Woman". This is the ONLY Pacino film I physically cannot watch. Pacino's character in Scent for me equates to fingernails running down a chalkboard. But for some reason he was awarded the Oscar for this hammy role - and like I said, ever since Al Pacino has never been the same.
And concerning De Niro....well, I could go into his roles in Meet the Fockers and its sequels, or talk about the merits or lack thereof of the film Awakeings, but because of "The Deer Hunter" alone, De Niro will always get a pass.

As it was, the ending of Heat was depressing. I think it was cool that Val Kilmer's character got away, though. Hey what the fuck was that thing on Kilmer's arm anyway? It was so distracting I couldn't take my eyes off it, like a huge bump or something on his elbow.

I think - hope! - they both still got it. Pretty sure they do, but proof would be nice at this point. This could be an increasingly rare shot at "Great" for both of them, depending on who directs, natch. Both De Niro and Pacino are in slumps, have been for quite a few years now, give or take, so my fingers are well and truly crossed for a new classic of "Heat" proportions. And by the way, I found the ending of "Heat" very poignant. Brilliant use of music too.

Ok I dont dispute Raging Bull, ut that was merely a piece of wood with boxing gloves. GodfatherII was hilarious. Only reason the godfather movies got oscar nomination was because of mafia connections.Not because Godfather II was good . It wasnt. The Deerhunter: DeNiro was acted of the screen by Christopher Walken. In fact Walken carried that movie. De Niro was his usual blank slate self. Heat: in that movie he looked like a bored bank manager with medical issues. The irony was tom Sizemores performance carried that movie with its edginess and manic energy. The problem with Hollyweird is that in a city where everyone is acting, any sense of perspective is lost in crap. I mean he was even acted off the screen by William Shatner in Primetime. If anything Willian Shatner is a better actor than DeNiro.

and try to put Jack in it. De Niro and Pacino have shown great acting skill at some points in their careers. But Jack has always played Jack. He's the charicature in a room full of characters. That's great if you want a campy film or over-the-top film, but I wouldn't anticipate the movie as much.

De Niros acting in The Deer Hunter borders on Godlike. Listen, I'm not one of those people that will heap praise on actors just because it's the popular thing to do. I watch a movie with no preconceived notions about the actors in the movie. I give myself totally to the movie and the character therein. I suggest re-visiting The Deer Hunter with a clear mind. Wipe all thoughts of De Niro out of your head and approach the movie in a new way. Let De Niro become the character of Michael Vronsky and not De Niro. Watch how he plays the character with such understated conviction and sadness. Sure, that has sort of become De Niros stapes acting technique, but it works so well for this movie and that character that to dismiss his acting job as wooden is just wrong. Especially when you take the Russian roulette scene into play. You cannot call De Niro wooden during those minutes on screen when he "BECOMES" Michael Vronsky. De Niro disappears during that moment and right before our eyes we are transported to North Vietnam to witness humanity at its most raw. incredible.cheers

These are movies you need to revisit if you think he can't act:
MEAN STREETS - not wooden at all there... TAXI DRIVER - you gave him that one, fine... The GODFATHER PART II - Don't mistake stillness for being wooden, he embodied the young version of Brando's Godfather... RAGING BULL- how can you say this performance was wooden at all? The rage that character had, etc., come on!... THE DEER HUNTER - Did you even watch the Vietnam sequences???? And again, don't mistake stillness as wooden... THE KING OF COMEDY - Probably his best overall performance!!! No wooden acting there, not at all!... BRAZIL - An eccentric turn for him... JACKNIFE - One of his better and most underrated roles... fucking GOODFELLAS - Hello wsah156, where are you??... AWAKENINGS - Dynamic performance... CAPE FEAR - Brilliant in a subpar movie... MIDNIGHT RUN - One of the best comedies, and one of his best performances... THIS BOY'S LIFE - Another brilliant frickin' performance...
Dude, either you're under the age of, I don't know, 24 and have just seen bits and pieces of these movies while doing the A.D.D dance routine with your remote, OR you just don't understand talent and cinema.
Now, keep in mind that I do think he's taken pretty lame and uninteresting roles since the 21st century began (with the exeption of his turn in MEET THE PARENTS), but to say the dude can't act? Give me a break, man! -

thats the sad fact. He has been brilliant in the past. Maybe not his generations Brando, but pretty damn close. But his last good performance was at least 14 years ago. Like Brando, he needs a "Last Tango" to show the world his acting chops again.

De Niro and Pachino had a big problem after all the Martin Scorese/mob/tough guy films - they were typecast. Nobody could or would see them as the guy next door, or a company man, or a high powered lawyer. So they are getting all these scripts where they plays a sorta toughguy, but wants other scripts. Those scripts aren't the best, though. They want Tom Hanks for those movies. So they take the lesser material with lesser directors.

This is a must see no matter how it turns out.
De Niro needs this more than Pacino. Pacino was GREAT as recently as "Angels in America" and "Merchant of Venice" - "Angels" is among his best performances ever. Some of you have no memory at all.
Oh and as for "Gigli" - he's just IN it people it's not his fault it sucked, and he didn't suck (he rarely does) - what's he got 4 minutes of screen time?
Give him a break already - dude's a national treasure who uncorks great performances onscreen or onstage every 2 years or so.
Now, Bobby D. on the other hand, well, it's been a while.....

I didn't watch it for years because of the bad reviews, but saw it a couple of months ago, and thought it was a very solid little heist flick with nice performance from both Bob and Ed, and Brando was fun. Not a classic, but a nice way to waste a few hours

... for Pacino, it was clearly SCENT OF A WOMAN. I love his performance, but since then, he's been the go to heavy that goes from hushed mumbles to FUCKING YELLING LIKE A MANIAC! I personally love it though. He plays it so well that SOMEHOW, for me, it doesn't get old. And SOMEHOW, even though the notes are the same, he manages to create a different type of character each time.
For De Niro??? Hmmmm. Tough one. I really think HEAT was the role that typecasted him. The quiet guy that was at the same time intense. The stares... ever notice that in his performance? It was either HEAT or CASINO... because they were a variation of his GOODFELLAS persona. Dont' get me wrong, I LOVE Heat, but...
Jack Nicholson... he's a lot like Pacino. His performances may have the same notes, but somehow he keeps us interested. I'll watch Jack in anything to be honest.
Brando. Fucking guy was BRILLIANT. He was and is so far removed from anyone we're talking about. He's fucking Zeus. Did you guys/gals catch the new doc BRANDO that was on... I can't remember the channel, maybe Bravo? Just debuted and I think it was at Cannes and/or Tribeca. BEST fucking doc on Brando you'll see with new interviews from Pacino and pretty much anyone that had anything to do with him (Coppola and Nicholson weren't there though... hmmm). But Brando was just... above everyone else. Like a brilliant mad scientist. He was never typecast in my opinion. Even the dozens of shitty movies he was in, in between the classics, he was great. -
De Niro wasn't just playing his same old tough guy/psycho/loner roles. Watch him play the not-very-smart, dying, baseball player. Great performance.

Hey I love Brando as much as anybody but he wasn't "so far removed from anybody we were talking about"......Brando was bad alot on film, he wasn't great in everything ("interesting" maybe but he has been awful in roles too). In terms of their raw talent Brando and Pacino are quite similar except of course Brando is the pioneer.
Also people are misusing the word typecast. Pacino, Nicholson and De Niro may cash in paychecks, but they have the option to do anything they want - they are not "typecast" in the sense that say Pauly Shore can't be cast in anything beyond what our perception of him is.
Most actors get lazy in one way or another - Brando didn't even try half the time, where's his attempts at Shakespeare after "Julius Caeser"? Pacino in his 60s playing "Angels in America" and "Merchant of Venice" is far more daring and brilliant than anything Brando would even attempt at the same stage of his career, but here's the contradiction : - you count them for their great work only really. Daniel Day-Lewis is a great actor, so was Olivier, Day-Lewis rarely acts in crap, Olivier did it ALOT and a s a result was sometimes awful, that doesn't make Day-Lewis a better actor (in and of itself). -
Al Pacino unzips his pants while DeNiro is bent over in the Taxi Cab. Al says " Say HELLO to my little friend" and DeNiro says" You talking to me? You talking to me?" Kurt Russell was outside watching and he was laughing so I guess it's okay.

If you haven't seen it, do so, it's really good. There's a throwaway moment in the scene where De Niro is on the phone in a callbox and he threatens to kill the Grodin character, who is standing listening... it still cracks me up every time - the way De Niro looks at him and shakes his head.. fucking funny

Is probably DeNiro's most accomplished performance outside of his Scorsese collaborations. The scene with his estranged daughter is heartbreaking, and the way DeNiro captures years of hurt and shame when he lays eyes on her, yet also managing to simultaneously not let her see it (it's something I didn't really notice untill I grew up) is nothing short of masterful. This is an action-comedy no less. Fuck pairing with Pacino, get with Grodin again Bob!!
