JOHN RAMBO Official Stills!!

Published at:  May 16, 2007 2:31:08 PM CDT

Merrick here...

OKAY...

So...

We’ve seen a buncha behind-the-scenes / “spy” photos from the filming of JOHN RAMBO. Now, www.lashorasperdidas.com has posted the first official images from the film…both promo-shotish in nature.

Click on the misunderstood, under-appreciated, establishment-lamenting warrior icon to see more!

What do you folks think?

I mean, I'm all for another Rambo movie and all - I'm just curious about whether the concept will work when not hinged on a particular political charge (that I know of, at least). The first film was a nod to disrespected/forgotten veterans, the second dealt with POWs, and the third took us to Afghanistan. But, this one is about rescuing some kidnapped humanitarian aid workers. They're Christian; I'm thinking the undercurrent/immediacy/gravity won't be the same.

Or, will it?

Did it every bother anyone that RAMBO III is called RAMBO III, when it wasn't preceded by the titles "RAMBO I" or "RAMBO II". That always irritated me.

The way to go with this one...

    by franklin t marmoset

...would have been to have old Johnny Rambo as a contestant on one of those reality shows - I'm A Celebrity... or Big Brother or somesuch. You know, he's trying to fit into society, doing his best to go along with the collection of self-obsessed wannabes he's surrounded by, but then he snaps (someone pushes him, obviously) and he picks the bastards off one by one with his big fucking serrated knife and various traps made out of branches and string and whatnot. That would give it some contemporary relevance, I think.Anyway, if you're reading this - call me, Mr Stallone. It's not too late to turn this one around. I will accept a 'story by' credit.

Was that it should've been 'Rambo: First Blood Part III.' Which yes, always irritated me too. But not nearly as much as the largely forgettable Rambo III anyway, so it's really sorta moot.

Yeah, the abandonment of the established title sequence did feel lazy the first time I saw the movies. I suppose the producers thought calling something "First Blood" over and over would sound weird.
It did feel lazy, just like the rest of the movie really.

I'm glad Islamic terrorists are not the villains - not because it's politically incorrect, but because it'd be American propaganda.

Islamic terrorism exists because of the West, they are the product of the West's policies. The west created the war.

If, somehow, A rambo picture could address the issue, then it'd be one hellva picture, but I don't see that happening. Rambo 4 is probably the last one.

I've been a big supporter of this film ever since the 90's, but I have to admit...I've yet to see any stills where I thought Stallone actually looked good. It's a little jarring to see him looking so puffy (even though I did just see him in Rocky Balboa). I was hoping that all the previous photos were just unflattering spy shots. But if these are being used as promo stills...not good. I just hope this film doesn't find him looking ridiculous...and that they change the title again before it's released. "John Rambo" as a title just doesn't work. Audiences have been on a first-name basis with Rocky for thirty years. But no one really thinks of Rambo as "John".

About the Australia thing...he made a mistake, BIG DEAL

    by abking

Sly issued this the other day......Your Honour,

A strange and truly unfortunate occurrence happened when arriving in your country.

I made a terrible mistake, not because I was attempting to deceive anyone but I was simply ignorant of your official rules and I wish to sincerely apologise to the court and the Australian community for my breach of Australian custom law.

I feel terrible that my breach of the rules has set a poor example to members of the public, whose opinion I cherish dearly.

Never, ever, was it my intention to breach the laws and I realise that I should have properly informed myself about your customs.

May I offer the following observations by way of explanation – but they are not an excuse for my actions.

Years ago I was diagnosed with a condition and my doctors prescribed human growth hormone and testosterone for its treatment. Under medical supervision, I have continued to use both medications.

I had in my luggage a significant quantity of those medications since I was to be on location in Thailand for three months.

On arrival in Sydney the medications were not hidden in any way and without hesitation I showed all my medications to customs officials. The customs officers inspected the testosterone and allowed me to bring the medication into the country.

I have never supported the use of illegal drugs or engaged in any illegal activities in my entire life.

Finally, I wish to express my deepest remorse and again apologise for my actions. It was a hard-learned lesson and an eye-opener that the world's a complex society. Knowing the rules of your intended destination is of paramount importance.

You have a great country that I have enjoyed visiting and very much hope to again.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Sylvester Stallone.

In the sequels, especially, he's just this methodical killing machine. I hope Sly uses his age as an opportunity to give Rambo some humanity and dimension... let him be afraid, let him feel things, let him talk... character actors like Bruce Willis and Nicholas Cage are remembered for bringing those qualities to action movies, and I think Sly can do it too.

I read Rambo in that was married to a peace activist and had hung up his knives and guns. Rambo was more of an eco-warrior type in the script, but when he finds out his son is involved with a terrorist group and take hostages at the UN. Rambo not only has to kill the terrorists, but take on his own brainwashed son. Sounded really interesting. This sounds a bit been there done that, got the action figure. This might be good though. Merrick, about the RAMBO titles: the reason why...

    by abking

Merrick, it is very simple for the little title change for the RAMBO series. FIRST BLOOD was "first blood" and we all know why that title was perfect. They drew "first blood" on John!!! Rambo: FIRST BLOOD PART II's title was also relevent because again "first blood" was drawn against John Rambo with the government betraying him. In RAMBO III, there was no such thing! Calling it RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART III would not have gone with the story. Rambo was at some kind of peace at the beginning, but went in the rescue his friend/mentor. There was no "first blood" drawn on him so to speak. I believe this was explained way back when...glad I could clear that up:) NOW on to JOHN RAMBO! I laugh when people still say Stallone is FAT or out of shape. If Rocky Balboa didn't shut up some of you skeptics then watch the behind-the-scenes work out segement on the dvd...you will see what a ripped body looks like and at 60 years old!

    The "Christian" thing

    by bloo

I do think that this is significant issue and one that isn't targeted much. I went to The Philippines this past fall and whenver I mention going there people look at me and are like "didn't some missionaires get killed there (re: Martin and Gracia Burnham)" and that was a couple of years ago, Christians all over the world are dying at the hand of Islmaists, radical hindus, Skiahs (?), etc. every day. You may not know this but there are more Christian martyers today (well not TODAY but you know what I mean) then ever in history, more then the Inquistion, then the Romans, then ANY other time in is history. so yeah I think it's relevent not just an issue that we hear about much.

... that JOHN RAMBO will be pussified to a PG-13 rating. A film dealing with the atrocities of war where mountain villagers, the Karen people, are killed and raped by Burmese soldiers simply can't have a PG-13 rating. And probably we'll have Rambo witnessing some of those atrocities, reminding him in black and white flashbacks of what he's himself been through. Even though it's not official there was also another pic of him shooting with an M60 machine gun and covered in blood posted on joblo.com/arrow. This movie will be a tough R. And I am highly excited about the return of John Rambo, glad to see the project take concrete shape with this picture.

George Lucas thinks Sly's wet t-shirt is silly

    by abominable snowcone

I kind of like it, although I must say it makes look like somebody's dad. I still think they shoulda gone with a shorter haircut. I'll be disappointed if Rambo doesn't utilize some of his typical combat dialogue: "Huh!" "Suhnt!" "TUH!" And as for the whole 'steroid' muscle growth hormone thing in Australia, I just don't care. Sly can do no wrong in my eyes unless he makes sequels to Judge Dredd or Stop or My Mom Will Shoot. Aw, nevermind, I liked Rocky Balboa so much that I'll give him a lifetime free pass. But if this Rambo is to be any good, they seriously should take the time for some character exposition / development and don't worry about cramming nothing but action into an eighty minute shamefest.

    by abominable snowcone

We learn in the new movie that Rambo was actually named after his father's dog--John. And that the first of his many scars were sustained in a childhood fight on a circus train with soviet spetsnaz troops. Speaking of which, even with the USSR gone, do you think this film will feature a token russian commander (played by a southern white american) with a bad Dracula accent? How kick ass would that be? "You wish to test your strent? Good. Good. Ve vill see how tolf you arv. You vill talk--or ve vill put it in HIS eye!"

    by shakalakaboom

for the first time in years and I was surprised to see that it wasn't as violent as I remembered. Only one person gets killed. A few people are maimed and most of the town gets blown up, but not much in the blood and guts category. Rambo 2: Saw it in high school years ago and even back then, I thought it was silly. Rambo 3: Haven't seen it, but I'm familiar with the plot. I don't plan on seeing John Rambo, but I think it would be an interesting allegory to have Rambo go after the Taliban he helped in the third film.

    by eyeofpolyphemus

I was under the impression the Christian theme was not asbig as the impact of the Christians on a jaded Rambo. This was to be a personal movie about Rambo finally coming to inner peace over his life of violence and being manipulated. Personally, i like the idea of a smaller, more intimate film to wrap up Rambo's story on a high, personal note.

To understand what's happening, one must go back, way back to understand how the West has undermined these countries. Where diplomacy failed.

    by vern

I don't know man, Stallone's current look was perfect for ROCKY BALBOA. He really looked like an old boxer that's been punched in the face too many times. I really liked that movie, it was a down to earth character piece revisiting the sacred grounds of the first one.
But for some reason seeing him now in the Rambo getup is not as fitting, it's kind of sad. He almost looks like a dude dressed up as Rambo instead of the real guy. Even more than the ROCKY sequels, the ridiculous FIRST BLOOD sequels turned him into a super hero, this chiseled Native American Adonis. Now we see him and he's still got long hair and a head band, but age hasn't made him more interesting like Clint Eastwood. It's made him more dumpy like everybody else.
But if they do it right that could be what the movie is all about, I don't know. I want it to be more like the physically astounding but emotionally vulnerable character of FIRST BLOOD, which is the one in the series that I really love. So maybe this is what I want. I'm just not sure.
One thing is for sure, I do look forward to this movie, and mainly because it's being directed by Stallone. At least we know the action is gonna be old school. We need somebody to keep it alive.

Yes America is a hypocrit. They disagree with communism, and the lack of democracy... and yet you have a PRESIDENT who was not even elected, and who went to War without the approval of the people. Explain the differences between this and communism? Or Nazi Germany even? Stating that America 'pissed everyone off' really isnt me taking a bias viewpoint. How can it be? Now, you didn't quite conform to my theory of the 'three-stage talkback comeback TSTC, because you had more than three parts.... but the fact that your final point... cleverly designed to destroy my argument was based around the fact that.... wait for it... you can't actually shout on the internet. First Blood

    by foreeelectric

What makes First Blood such a great movie was that it was a monster movie where this government-trained killer was the monster.

Look at the way it's staged, paced, and shot. Then compare it to a classic monster movie such as Them!

It's spot-on. You even have the expert who knows the secret to stopping the monster.

The sequels were nowhere near as good because they removed all the suspense and went just for straight ahead action. Anyone who wanted a good action movie probably prefers the sequels, but as a standalone film, there's something really special about First Blood.

The Star Wars FPS series had the same numbering issue as the First Blood/Rambo series except they made a different call: first, Dark Forces, second, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, third, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast (2 twice!) Then they ended like Rambo and went numberless in the final game Jedi Academy.

Why are people at secular rally in Turkey killed and mamed by a bob. Why is a bomb exploded at in easter celebration in Egypt? Why is the "friendship express" bombed in India, killing over 150 people? Why did the Taliban uses child to behead a spy"? Indy and Rambo

    by abcdefghijklmnop

Unlike Rambo, Indy was never a youth-based character. He was an Everyman who frequently got his ass kicked, then somehow had to overcome the odds with determination. He's also a character that admitted in the very first film he had too much mileage, and one that Ford has already portrayed as an older guy with a grey beard. Rambo, on the other hand, is a character that relied heavily on his physical strength to save the day. He was always in amazing shape and portrayed as a kind of superhero who could do outrageous things (like surviving a fall off the face of a cliff). I think it will be a little easier to believe Ford as an old college professor that gets beat up...than Stallone as an old Rambo taking out a Burmese army. Now having said that, I do hope Ford doesn't look as silly in the fedora as Stallone is currently looking in the headband. (And I hope future pics are a lot more flattering to Stallone, too.)

that it will be better than the previous sequels. I recommend, to anyone interested, you watch First Blood with Stallone's commentary on. Stallone understands what didn't work in the sequels and what was special about the original. Hopefully he can pull off the same feat that he did with Rocky Balboa. The one thing that concerns me from the still is that Rambo shouldn't have long dark hair at his age. Right?

    by sonnyboo2

I saw FIRST BLOOD when I was 10 years old. It was a great movie, and when RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II came out, I loved it then. By the time it was RAMBO III, my interest was waning.

Having watched all 3 of these on DVD recently, I can only say that FIRST BLOOD retains ever ounce of gravity and power as when I was a kid. RAMBO, FIRST BLOOD PART II was a horrendous, ridiculous popcorn fest with the least amount of realism and laughable action sequences imaginable... until RAMBO III. For all the "rapid machine gun fire, Rambo never gets hit, but every single shot nails a non-white bad guy" cliche of II, I can't believe how much worse III was.

The great irony of III (along with a THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, James Bond movie) is that they are sympathetic and helpful to basically OSAMA BIN LADENish characters and the same AFGHANI FREEDOM FIGHTERS that we are fighting with now.

    Gotta love the 80'....

Yes, people will (and already have) made fun of old Indiana Jones. They have made fun of bald John McClane, and old Rocky Balboa. I really was not making fun of Stallone, I love old Rocky. I'm just saying that Rambo is such an icon in his chiseled youth that it is kind of shocking to see him like this. It's like if we suddenly saw James Dean at 55 with a fat head. Maybe "dumpy" was the wrong word because Sly is obviously pumped up, but how about WIDER. The guy has gotten wider, you can't deny it. But that's life.
In general though I am all for old badasses. Anybody complaining about these guys being too old isn't thinking. Clint Eastwood could break any of these guys in half by staring at them and he's way older. Clint, Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, hell, even Paul Newman put the lie to that one. There are and have been plenty of old people worth fearing.

The actual chronology of the octology is: The Born Losers, Billy Jack, The Trial of Billy Jack, Billy Jack Goes to Washington, First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III and John Rambo.

Nothing wrong with old, thick and wide. John Wayne was The Duke until the end, and it took Cancer to take him down. (Well, that or Bruce Dern, the only man to actually kill The Duke in a movie. Well, except for an anonymous Mexican soldier in The Alamo...)

    BSB, right about Trautman

    by abominable snowcone

Richard Crenna was a good actor, but the dialogue for Trautman was never very good, and never made him seem very sympathetic to Rambo or respectful of Rambo's earned right to be left alone. Whenever Rambo wasn't around, Trautman would babble complimentary platitudes to third parties about him like, "He's the best" or "Hell is his home" or "God would have mercy...he won't." Then when shit hits the fan and they need Rambo's help, Trautman never seemed to have qualms about putting John in harm's way. Sure, he kinda helps bail Rambo outta prison in II with his offer of a recon mission, but Rambo ends up screwed. And after all he endured in II, Trautman has the nerve to interupt John's relative life of quiet at the monk temple and ask him to go in harm's way again.

    John Rambo is a... ZIONIST!

    by damonster

Sound the shofar! Rambo is schlepping back into action and he's shvitzing Israeli victory in violent land dispute! He's deployed by Israeli Special Forces into Palestinian war-torn shtettles to drive those bastards m'shugna. This time around those P-stine rock hurlers are gonna become ultra-nebish in comparison to Rambo's arsenal--which now includes fiery passion for kosher products and parve peace agreements.
"You son-of-a-bitch! I knew it was you in Beruit!"

It's gotta be a prequel where John Rambo makes an unlikely working relationship with a US Special Ops named... "Dutch"!

Sly should have given taking the "Copland" route one more try and done this as a straight drama. First Blood was the underpinnings of an actual drama in there under the cool "Let's fuck up Brian Dennehy in the woods" stuff. "Old, broken Rambo whom time has passed by" was the way to go here.

    To Vern...

    by abking

Yes, Sly has gotten "wider" so to speak, but he is still a tank as far as muscles go. I bet that pic will go different with you when we get a shirt-less photo! With the INDIANA JONES thing...I just know the talkbackers are going to lay into Harrison Ford no matter how good he looks in the first few stills released from that picture!<<<< There are no real action stars out there anymore...maybe Gerard Butler might stand a chance , but he is already off on the wrong foot re-making other peoples movies. Vin's last chance comes with BABALON A.D.!!!!

Worst fears confirmed for Indy IV

    by abominable snowcone

Harrison Ford DOES look pretty old in this recent production still shot from Indy IV, taken near the Yale campus.

"Another Rambo," or "More Rambo," or "Me Not Expendable."

Clint directing Dirty Harry remake with 'Wolverine'

    by pokadoo

as Young Dirty. Would be ace! And then Paul Verhoven could direct a Judge Dredd remake, with Clint as Old Dredd! Make it happen, Hollywood! Oh, and that Rambo still looks cool. Reminds me of the first 'Blood' film. Hope their's a part for Brian Denehey or David Caruso.

    Clint's Dirty Harry remake

    by spandau belly

I was thinking Daniel Day Lewis as the new Harry Callahan, but Hugh Jackman is a good choice, too. I feel Clint has the clout to do whatever he wants with this project and could make it the best copper flick in years.

    Stallone versus Ford

    by spandau belly

I actually think Harrison Ford still looks really good. I just think he lost his charisma in the early 1990s. Even though he looks fit and all he seems really sleepy in all his movies. I think The Fugitive was the last time I found him entertaining on screen.Stallone on the other hand is still very charismatic and in great shape. His approach to Rocky 6 was brilliant and I'm sure he has a fitting end in mind for Rambo.

    Rambo 20

    by sith-vol

Rambo III couldn't be First Blood 3 because you can only draw First Blood once.....for that matter Rambo should have been Second Blood and Rambo III should have been Rambo: Third Blood-First Blood Three: The Taliban Boogie. I think this is a horrible idea. Its not the least bitt relevant today. Instead they could wait five more years and then remake First Blood with the main character being an Iraqui War vet since this conflict is turning into this generation's Vietnam.

Rambo III when there was no I or II

    by the moseph

YES!!!!!!!! My God, that irritated me to no end and still does evidently! I always thought it was a cop out since everyone seemed to want to call Rambo: First Blood Part II "Rambo II". I guess they figured why not call it what everyone is going to refer to it as anyway. I still believe that a little creative brainstorming would have solved that problem. Thank GOD they aren't calling this one Rambo IV!!!! In a way I understand the title of the new film, but I'm not sure I would've gone that way especially in light of having recently done the same thing to the latest Rocky installment. I'm hoping the story will be a personal one for Rambo, fitting the title and not just another half assed lazy moment in the creativity department.

Clint can still play Harry...and about Ford!

    by abking

Clint should be the only person playing DIRTY HARRY! I hear Ford is in the gym getting in great shape. I'm sure people will compare Sly and Ford next May when both films open...

First Blood is the only worthwhile Rambo film.

    by darthbinks1220

It tells how a man is abused, and shows a paranoid, exaggerated response. Happens all the time. Good flick. The sequels are merely Hollywood retreads w/ nothing to say.

    Yeah...Brackie

    by mulberry

Tenuously related, but funny - few years back on UK Celebrity Big Brother, Brigitte Nielsen was one of the 'celebs' and they surprised her by also sticky Sly's wacko Mom (and BN's ex Mom-in-law) Jackie in there.

Enter Jackie. Brigitte says "It's Jackie". Jackie sees Brigitte and hears "It's Jackie" and, with Stallonian acuity of mind says as a riposte: "Yeah...Brackie".

Even better if you imagine Scooby Doo saying it.

Or they could do a trilogy:

    by napoleon park

    "Antepenultimate Blood", "Penultimate Blood",
    then "Final Blood".

"Rambo Begins", "Rambo Returns", "Rambo: Rise of the Rambo".
"Rambo of the CaribbeanL Rambo's Chest", "Rambo and the Temple of Rambo"
Episode One. The Phantom Rambo", Episode Two, Attack of the Rambo", "Episode three, Revenge of the Rambo", "Episode Four, A New Rambo", "Episode Five, Rambo Strikes Back", "Episode Six, The Muppet Movie". {See how I slipped an Ewok joke in there when you weren't expecting it?)

Hey Impulse, I served my country

    by liljuniorbrown

So i'm a toothless southern boy who thinks i'm serving my country? You had better hope you never sprout enough hair on your nuts to actualy say your bullshit to a real American Soilders, face but if it ever happens please make sure it's me. I will buy a plane ticket if need be and meet your fat ass half way. Bottom line, you better hope and pray you never come within swinging distance of a real live American soilder because man or woman you wouldn't last two fucking seconds. While we are on the subject with doing something with your life, other than living in your moms basement and wacking off to Hentai porn three times a day ,what do you consider doing something with your life?
