More clues for the mysterious PIXAR film after TOY STORY 2
Well this isn't much, but it kind of shows the direction that they want to head in... Is it the monsters under the bed story? Is it the WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (I'm positive I just got that wrong... but it's really late and I'm tired) Or will it be THE TRUE STORIES OF COUSIN IT? Who knows? We'll continue to keep our eyes on this film. And hopefully Gumby's friend Prickle will let us know if he learns anything more.
not a big report, but one of the heads of R&D was recruiting at MIT
yesterday and said that they are developing new long hair algorithms for
the feature film after toy story 2.

I'm not any good at all this arithmetic business, but it sounds like Pixar is working real hard over yonder in them shiny labs.

Pixar has now gotten strength to do any project they want. Monster hits back to back will do that for you. Seems like every animator will say, "I love doing this cartoon and creature animation, but I would love to do an action film or drama with an animated enviroment". Pixar now here is your chance to do this project. An animated drama, action, any genre besides talking animals and toys would be fresh. If the project fails, I think the mouse will forgive you. Never hurts to try.

Pixar now has the ability to make CG movies without the Disney name attached. While I'd like to see this happen, I dont think it actually will. Pixar and Disney are joined at the hip and doing quite well and while I want to see Pixar make their own films, I dont see it happening in the forseeable future. McK

I tried an early version of this in my junior college days (oddly enough, the class was using a 3d program to produce FLAT 2d images in a 3d modeling world...go figure.) I use Caligari Truespace3 for non-organic modeling and AMAPI studio for organic modeling. I still havent figured out IK "bones" for animation and mostly do it for hobby and make still images but I have done some simple short 3d animation (the longest was 95 frames)

...hair of any kind is complicated in the 3D realm, so it's mainly faked or not used at all. I use Kinetix 3D Studio Max at my multimedia college, and I've only heard of RenderMan, SoftImage, etc. I really praise the boys over at Pixar, not only for the whole painstaking 3D animation process, but for getting more credit on A Bugs Life than in Toy Story! Do they ever deserve it! Now to Lasseter and crew: go make some great new characters, and give them heads with hair, long algorithmic hair! Leave the character data for those shiny plastic toys and shiny happy bugs for the Mouse House and their direct-to-video sequels! (They could sure use the extra money to maintain their Empire!) And not that it matters in the long run, but whatever you're doing... do it quick, before PDI and DreamWorks gets the jump on you, again!

You can see the progression in the hair algorithims. The cat in the flintstones movie (ILM).. the Coca-Cola Bears (Rhythm & Hues) .. the latest I know of and most advanced was Mighty Joe Young (ILM I think). Better hair algorithims bring us one step closer to doing realistic humans.
-
Didn't John Lasseter use to work for ILM's animation division during the 80's?
-
This is already widely known but worth repeating for those who don't know or remember. I believe ILM developed Renderman and the core software team that developed it was split off from ILM and sold to Steve Jobs for about $50 million and is now called PIXAR.
-
The movie is called monsters Inc., dont tell me how i know this, but my source is about as reliable as it can be. And no, Pixar is not doing episode 2, and yes, Lasseter did work at ILM and he and Bill Reves developed "RenderMan." Also, if you want to get a good idea of what this movie will be loosely based upon, try and find Lasseters 1979 animated short, "NITEMARE." Like his 1988 "TIN-TOY" which inspired "TOY STORY" (Tinny, the main character from TIN-TOY was supposed to be the main character in TOY STORY)"NITEMARE" looks and sounds to me like it is the basis for Lasseter's inspiration to make "MONSTERS INC." So, if you live in the L.A. area, and want to see a brilliant piece of animation which may just be the prequil to "MONSTERS INC." then hop in your car and head over to the California Institute of the Arts and go to the library, I'm sure they'll have a copy of this locked up in their archives. Hope i was of some help. Oh, and PS, Katzenburg did in fact steal the idea of "A BUG's LIFE"
-
Antz and A Bug's Life were both great (though Antz was definitely the better of the two). Here's hoping those whizzes can top themselves again with Toy Story 2 and this mysterious project...by the way, I heard they were going to become their own full-fledged studio pretty soon.

Just get over it, you pansy. I'm sorry that this message board has "degraded" in your eyes, but honestly...big deal. Star Wars is less that 60 days away. I think everyone's entitled to type about Star Wars whenever and wherever they want. You know, it is possible to actually NOT read the posts that you dont care about. It is a simple aversion of the eyes. Here let's try. skip the following lines:

There, see? Not so hard, right? -
I would like to see Pixar do SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE. I would love to see Xixor (sp?) in a movie and I think Vader would be pretty badass in CG-3D. How cool would a Pixar Star Wars movie be?! The scene where Vader blows up Xixor's skyhook, the scene where Xixor almost seduces a scantely clad Leia, the scene where Vader whoops ass against the droids in the lightsaber practice round... they would be soooo cool! I would also like to see Pixar do a LEGEND OF ZELDA: THE OCARINA OF TIME movie based on the N64 game. That game has the most amazing grafix ever and it would make a kickass trip movie in CG.

Speaking of Mighty Joe Young
Isn't it wonderful that computer animation has progressed so far that they can make a cgi gorilla just as realistic as a fat bloke in a monkey suit. -
